Hey everyone, thank you so much for watching! Please consider subscribing to the channel? Please let me know if you recommend Gremlins 2?? Also, please let me know if it takes place during Christmas as well. I wish I knew this one did, but I like to go in as blind as possible so this ended up on the October list of reactions.
No! Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) isn't a Christmas movie! However, I would suggest doing G2 as close to Lincoln's Birthday as possible. Go with God and Be Safe from Evil. 😎 👍
Billy Peltzer is a great dog owner - even with his initial time with Gizmo he never forgets to give Barney love and snuggles. Was seething after the 'other Mogwai' strung-up poor Barney out in the cold with the X-Mas lights. The initial scripting for this movie had a much darker path for the mom and Barney.
Jesse, aside from my commentary on the video itself, I want to give you a bit of a history lesson, in this reply. When the MPAA established the "ratings" system, there were only 5 Ratings levels. G for General Audiences, PG for Parental Guidance SUGGESTED, R for Restricted, X for Adults Only, and XXX for pornography. Until the early 1980s, G rated movies COULD contain "low" levels of violence and blood (see the original Planet of the Apes moves for reference), PG allowed for higher levels of violence, and even limited nudity (in a non-sexual manner), R was for even higher levels of violence and nudity, along with SOME "mild" sexual situations, X was for extremely graphic violence, nudity, and "softcore" pornography, while XXX was full on pornography. Because of the broadness of the PG rating, when Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom came out, many parents took their children to see those movies, thinking that they weren't as "graphically violent" as they were... Steven Spielberg promoted the creation of a new rating, "PG-13", which would warn parents against taking small children to certain movies. The rating was approved, and the first movie released with that rating was "Red Dawn" in 1984. A few years later, the original X rating would be changed to NC-17, meaning no children under the age of 17 would be admitted, even with a parent. Also, some movies not involving pornography would allowed to be released "unrated" based on crude humour, nudity, "non-pornographic sexual situations", violence, and language. SOME movies would be "re-rated" due to added scenes, and classified as "Unrated", but this didn't happen very often. A few movies that were originally released with an X rating were re-rated as "Unrated", rather than NC-17, based on the graphic violence. I'll cite The Toxic Avenger and Return of the Living Dead as two that I remember having an X rating originally. Both of those movies were also "trimmed slightly" and had an R rated version. Caligula is another... but it also includes pornography in the Unrated version. In 1979, Disney released their very first PG rated movie, "The Black Hole", which I don't know if I've suggested it before to you... but I would love to see you React to that movie. It's dark as Hell, but not exactly scientifically accurate. But they were riding the wave of "Star Wars mania" back then, like every other studio was. In any case, it's a "sci-fi horror" movie at its core, and there are some scenes in it that would traumatize children. But parents might be inclined to take their kids to see it, because "Disney movie... with robots". This is part of the reason Spielberg pushed for the PG-13 rating... so that parents would know going in that a movie may NOT be for smaller children, no matter WHICH studio released it. Disney was always known (at the time) for doing kids movies. The Black Hole was a hard departure from that. Yes, they had a few "scarier" movies (especially the "Witch Mountain" movies.... which I also recommend)... but there were certain expectations. Anyway... there's your movie history lesson for today. Time to get on with your video! Have a great day!
It's hilarious how Gremlins and Die Hard ignited the "is it a Christmas movie or not" argument of the century. Have always watched this for Halloween, and the X-Mas stuff just seemed peripheral. HBO Max put out the animated series: Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai to tell the story of the China shop owner's (Sam Wing) adventures as a young boy, sometime last year. All in all, it's not that bad and tells more of the mythos of the creatures. Mr. Futterman, the problematic neighbor who wasn't a fan of foreigners is played by Dick Miller, who has such an amazing film resume. He's in another classic Halloween-themed film you might like - Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight.
Never watched this around the holiday season either. I know there's trees and decorations, but that stuff just blurs in the background as this story's told. My bf and I dressed up as Billy & Kate with a stuffed Gizmo in his backpack for Halloween, I stand with the folks that consider this a Halloween-oriented film. Had such a big crush on the character of Billy Peltzer for a long time, he's adorable in this film. Plus seeing actor Corey Feldman as a baby-faced kid is such a shock.
They released this film on June 8, 1984?!! So while it has a Christmas-theme, it does feel more Halloween-y to me. That was just poor marketing decision-making by Warner Bros. Gremlins 2 is the stronger of the two films, but this initial movie just feels so cozy and I'd love to live in Kingston Falls all year round.
Mrs. Futterman is played by Jackie Joseph, who played the original Audrey in the original Roger Corman "Little Shop Of Horrors" (which also has Dick Miller).
sheranguyen6838 ...This is a Christmas movie, because Christmas is essential to the plot of the movie. The inciting action, is a father buying his son a Christmas present. "Christmas" is everywhere in this movie. You typing "Christmas blurs into the background" is absolutely absurd and I hope that you are joking. Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
I'm back and forth thinking "Damn, this would've been great during Christmas", but I'm glad I finally got to check it out :) Mr. Futterman - Someone let me know that he's the gun shop owner in The Terminator, and I can't believe I didn't make the connection! I'll be adding "Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight" to my list of films to react to. Thanks for the recommendation!

Back in the 1990s, there was a Furby version of Gizmo, so of course, I bought one and still have it. It could communicate with other Furby's of that era, even if it sounded different. There was also a Yoda animatronic based on the same technology, but it didn't have the same sensor that other Furby's do. Still, they were some REALLY cool toys! Also, yeah, Gremlins is more of a Christmas movie than a Halloween movie.... then again, so is Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. 5:45 - I'm an animal lover in general. My wife and I have 7 cats and 2 dogs. Sadly, we had to put our pitbull down last year due to an injury. Our miniature poodle is 15 years old, has a heart condition and must take medication every 12 hours. A few months ago, my sister gave us a Pekingese puppy who was born November 30th of last year. Our cats range in age from 2 years all the way up to 17 years. But yeah, they are all my children. 8:50 - Yeah, Jesse..... I'm with you, man. Threaten one of my "kids"..... well, I won't say anything more.... but I'm sure you get the idea. 13:00 - The rule actually is "don't get him wet". 42:00 - Hey now! You can love both cats and dogs! (Okay, you retracted that statement.... so.... forgiven) But as far as Mrs. Deagle goes.... That bish is about to get what she's got coming to her... 47:45 - Yeah, my first wife died from cancer in August of 2006... so ever August, I go through my "yearly depression battle". It's pretty much the only time of year that it comes on regularly. It just kinda blows my mind that it's been 18 years since that happened.
The town of ‘Kingston Falls, Pennsylvania’ is the Universal backlot and, yes, you’ll recognize the center of town as Courthouse Square, now famous from Back To The Future, filmed the year after Gremlins.
I had to save watching this reaction until it got a little closer to Christmas. An independent theater here is playing Gremlins right now. I went last night which was great fun seeing it on Friday the 13th in December. The crowd was great. This movie sets up the extremes of the cuteness of Gizmo and the very dark actions of the Gremlins perfectly.
Fantastic reaction as usual Jesse. Good acknowledgement of lighting, practicals & characters. I love the look of the cover for it too. You just have to do Gremlins 2 -A new Batch. Love that one too. Good job👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Gremlin mania followed the release of this film. Cereal, toys, etc. Looking back, there was a dark, horror element in films back then that kids saw. I believe this film and 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' changed the rating system in film.
Fun fact: This movie was one of a few that were responsible for the creation of the PG-13 rating. Many parents brought their kids to see this, and were absolutely horrified by the violence it contained.
OH MAN! I may have to look up some of the marketing and how it was advertised, because I would think the look of the Gremlin would be enough for the parents to be cautious. I can see the confusion thought with a cute creature like Gizmo as a main character.
I can remember watching this as a kid and when Furby came out I got the closest one that looked like Gizmo! Also I love your little Halloween 🎃 setup behind you. You're just missing some little Halloween lights behind you. 🧡
Lol! I don't blame you. Gizmo is mesmerizing! I 100% expect Santa to bring me one for Christmas haha! I mention the set up in my Christine reaction. I actually did that one before this Gremlins reaction, which is why I didn't bring up the decor here. The "lamp" looking thing on the shelf actually lights up, so I may have to light it up in the next reaction :) Oh by the way. The Christine skit is complete! I feel like adding one more thing at the very end though.
@@jessebatres6895 I'm glad I guessed that you would have a Halloween light 😂. Great minds think alike!! And I'm so excited to see the Skit and surprise for Christine!!
I think it's a lack of Discipling them while they are young, I am guessing Gizmo was trained and what not by the old man I am guessing he probably had him for years and taught and worked with Gizmo every day to learn what is right and wrong, he also probably learned how Gizmo getting wet and all the other important matters into studying him, and now that he's in Billy's care he got wet and then these others are all newbie like newborns, Kind of like in the twilight movies how the newborns were out of control and their thirst, and were destructive and chaotic. I think that's how most of them behave, I think there's also a higher social order because right away you see Stripe took the lead as leader and has no interest in letting Gizmo be like them because he's an outcast. That's my theory a bit but then again in Gremlins 2 one of them gets extremely smart and begins to talk and explain their behaviors. Rumor has it that this movie was supposed to be released in Halloween but they couldn't get it out in time so it became Christmas instead. So, you'd have to check out the second movie if you want more details.
I'm surprise you didn't pick up that the old man at the beginning was the one complained about Billy's car, was the gun shop person in Terminator. Also Judge Reinhold; the bank co-work (the snob), was in a lot of stuff, Beverly Hills Cop and Fast Times at Ridgemont Times (about that same time period).
Dude, I can't believe that flew over my head as well! He has a unique presence and is easily identifiable. Yeah that douche looks really familiar. I remember Beverly Hills Cop being on tv, but I never watched it. I remember his being in a car with Eddie Murphy and another cop. Will finally have to check it out.
@@jessebatres6895 Yes very funny and quotable movie for sure, Murphy at his best. You can also check out another Murphy movie, 48 hrs....so good. No one reacts to that and it's 80's movies as well.
Now is a good time to plug the sequel - its awesome and several times more hectic. In fact, at some point completely ceases to make any sense and is just wall to wall gremlin antics. You should love it
Another great reaction!!! I love the length of your reactions!!! You can do part 2! I have a great movie request... The Way, Way Back - with Steve Carroll and Sam Rockwell. Also, Toni Collette!
Thank you so much Ronnie! Yeah I like including as much as I can, so the reactions are lengthy. Sometimes I see some reactions that are 20-30 minutes long for a 2 hour movie, and I'm like....... You know what it's better if I don't say. LOL! And OH! Those are some heavy hitters in the acting department. Might have to add that to my list. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Why didn’t you wait til Xmas like everyone else? Ho ho ho. By the time I saw your notification, I knew it was already TOO LATE 😅 it’s already on the way
Trust me man, when I heard the Christmas music I thought to myself "AH FUCK!" lol! I like to pretty much watch things close to blind and just know a few details, but the Christmas theme would've been helpful to know beforehand haha! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Okay I was spoiled as a kid, here's some movies released in 1984: Beverly Hills Cop, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, The NeverEnding Story, The Karate Kid, Romancing the Stone, Police Academy, Splash, Children of the Corn. Oh, there's many more, that I love that I didn't mention.
I'm hearing good things about part 2 so far, so I might just have to check it out :) I'm surprised no one has ever tried to remake this. Hopefully they wouldn't because a lot of remakes fall flat.
I saw an interview once where they finally explained that the "don't feed after midnight" rule was supposed to mean midnight until sunrise the next day. That should have been explained in the movie. I know alot of people were confused about that.
After many complaints from parents, this -child friendly- PG rated comedy horror film helped push for a new rating the very same year, PG13. It's the Mortal Kombat of the movie industry. Indiana Jones also received similar complaints, but Gremlins was the one to give some kids nightmares
Definitely watch Gremlins 2. It's great fun. Not a Christmas time movie. Nah those rolling ball poppers were sturdier back then. We had one that made it through my 2 kids and 4 of my nieces and nephews before it broke.
You need to watch close encounters of the third kind, indiana jones and the last crusade, the goonies, INNERSPACE, matinee, jurassic park, gremlins 2 the new batch, back to the future trilogy, men in black trilogy, the terminal, the abyss extended version, the Italian job 1969,goldfinger,the spy who loved me, moonraker
The word practical didn't exist pre-CGI. What you thought was a digital effect was an animated film effect. Also I saw this PG film when it came (This and the Twilight Zone movie propelled the rating of PG-13) out in July of '84. Saw the sequel in the theater as well, but didn't like it as much.
Another fine example of a Gen X movie being completely off the hook for kids to watch 😂...gets pretty brutal right?😅..try poltergeist if you haven't my friend..i believe that was PG 13! When it came out 😅
"Now I have another reason to hate Christmas." "What are you talking about?" "The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. [✂] And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus." Sweet Christ! 😳 Happy Halloween! 🎃 👻 💀 🦴 ⛓️ Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Zach Galligan. Location Location Fact: The set for Kingston Falls is the same one used for Back To The Future (1985). Both movies were filmed on the Universal Studios backlot. PG-13 Rating Fact: This movie and Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984) are credited with inspiring the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Many felt the movies were too violent for a PG rating, but not violent enough for an R rating. Practical Security Fact: Zach Galligan recounted in an interview that when the movie was made, there was no CGI, so all of the Gremlins were animatronics, each costing between $30-40,000. When everyone left the lot for the day, security would have everyone open the trunks of their cars to make sure they weren't stolen. Mythology Fact: A gremlin is a mischievous folkloric creature invented at the beginning of the 20th century to originally explain malfunctions in aircraft, and later in other machinery, processes, and their operators. Depictions of these creatures vary widely. Stories about them and references to them as the causes of especially inexplicable technical and mental problems of pilots were especially popular during and after World War II. Christmas Nightmare Fact: The "Santa Speech" proved to be controversial and studio executives insisted upon its removal because they felt it was too ambiguous as to whether it was supposed to be funny or sad. Director Joe Dante however stubbornly refused to take the scene out saying it represented this movie as a whole, which had a combination of horrific and comedic elements. Executive producer Steven Spielberg did not like the scene, but despite his creative control, he viewed this movie as Dante's project and allowed him to leave it in. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) would later hilariously lampoon this ridiculous speech, which I highly recommend.

The opening scene in this movie is the same Universal studios back lot from BACK TO THE FUTURE from 1985
Actually, I like the way the Gremlins look, sort of cool.
Yeah, they do have a cool design. Ugly compared to Gizmo, but still kind of a sly, mischievous, up to no good look, which makes sense lol!
That old lady in the movie is like the lady in the 1939 movie THE WIZARD OF OZ who becomes the wicked witch of the East or West with the green makeup
You forgot THE TERMINATOR, CONAN THE DESTROYER , A nightmare on elm St, Friday the 13th the final chapter, footloose & red dawn
@@ChaseDixon-ws2lg All in 1984? That's insane, great year for movies. Then all of the 80's were. I miss good movies.
Even though Gizmo is an animatronic puppet (sometimes voiced by Howie Mandel) still super cute and believable
Thanks, Jesse! 🎁
This has two movies, an animated series and lots of cameos in other things.
The robot on the phone was Robbie the Robot famous from the 50s sci-fi movie Forbidden Planet. Worth a watch.
Oh nice! I just looked it up and I wonder how many people missed the reference. You're a man of culture Johnny! :)
@@jessebatres6895 It stars a very serious Leslie Nielsen long before he became a comedy legend.
Grumpy Old Men 1 And 2 Really Good 😊
The police sheriff's deputy was also in another 1984 movie Beverly hills cop witch he played a bad guy who killed Axel's friend
Before Spielberg was attached this film was written as a Hard R (gory) horror black comedy
It was released at Christmas.
👍🏿👍🏿
Thank you so much!! :)
I recommend Gremlins 2.
Another fine example of a Gen X movie being completely off the hook for kids to watch 😂...gets pretty brutal right?😅..try poltergeist if you haven't my friend..i believe that was PG 13! When it came out 😅
Gremlins
Was this a horror or a comedy?
In my opinion, it's mostly a comedy. (80% comedy | 20% horror)
If they would've shown the actual kills then I would put it at about 50/50
"Now I have another reason to hate Christmas."
"What are you talking about?"
"The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. [✂] And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus."
Sweet Christ! 😳
Happy Halloween! 🎃 👻 💀 🦴 ⛓️
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Zach Galligan.
BTW, this isn't a Halloween movie. This is a Christmas movie. Why are people watching Christmas movies on Halloween?
The Gate (1987) should be on your list, if you want a legit Halloween movie.
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
Thanks my friend! Yeah for this one, I wish I knew it took place during Christmas. I like going into a film as blind as possible, so I didn't know this took place during Christmas.
@@BigGator5 I feel like this, like Nightmare Before Christmas, is a film you can watch either at Halloween OR Christmas.
LeChaunce ... You could, but no, both this movie and The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) are most certainly Christmas movies. Neither of those movies take place or have anything to do with Halloween, nor are either horror movies.
Go with God and Be Safe from Evil. 😎 👍
@@BigGator5 I'm sorry, but Nightmare Before Christmas most certainly has a LOT to do with Halloween, seeing as how all the primary characters are most assuredly inhabitants of Halloween town and the story is about how they try to co-opt the wrong holiday.
