  • The Electric Blue Acara is an exciting new fish in the hobby. It's peaceful like the "regular" blue acara, yet a gorgeous fish like the Electric Blue Jack Dempsey that emerged a few years ago. Here's a Fincast on the back story to the fish and its temperament.

    I love these fish they are so nice. I had to buy another one because he was stressed to death. He basically was beat up by a fish smaller than him. He would just take the beating. They are great beautiful fish.

    HI Austin -- I would be hesitant to put them with a BIG Dempsy. But they can hold their own with most cichlids.

  • @bobescher8831
    @bobescher8831 8 лет назад +2

    Gee I have nine of them at 4 inches big. With 3 1 1/2 Corydora's and haven't had any problems with them get along nicely with each other

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  8 лет назад

      I don't think you will have any problems. The cichlids get along well with each other and they won't bother the catfish. If you have a pair of cichlids which form then they will stakeout their territory and keep the others out. If you put smaller fish such as tetras in the tank They will most likely be eaten at some point.

    Hello John,
    Thank you for your video on the Electric Blue Acara, I really appreciate since I just got two of them and I haven't found a lot information on them. I wanted to ask if you could please tell me what they were being fed in this video since I notice that mine will take the small Spectrum Thera +A pellets but chew them a little and then spit out the rest. If you could please help me with this I would really appreciate it. Thank you and have a wonderful day.
    Sincerely,
    Ricardo

      Ricardo Urbieta Hi Ricardo. I have not had much trouble getting mine to eat. They will go for most high quality flake food as well as frozen bloodworms and the extra nutritional PE Mysis shrimp. I am currently feeding them pellets from Xtreme Aquatic Foods, which is formulated specifically for cichlids.... Their color is great using these pellets. I hope this helps. Please let me know.

      @fincasters  9 лет назад +3

      ***** There are a lot of plants in that tank -- but I'll try to ID all of them for you. Java Moss, Java Fern, various species of cryptocorynes including bronze wendtii and probably Lutea. amazon swords in the background, and several species of anubias. the large plant on the right is a tiger green lotus plant. One of my favorites. I have a playlist on planted aquarium you might enjoy here: ruclips.net/p/PL-rZ0ZtKptwYovfQaZnmyJdZpQZfEZG-H

    I have 3 of them in a 70 gallon tank. I feel like they are eating all of the guppies. I have clown loaches. Albino catfish. Emerald green quarries. Siamese algae eaters. Molly. Roseline sharks. A plecko. Some other non aggressive fish too. Okay. The Guppies keep disappearing. Two Mollies are missing too and one of my Albino Catfish just got taxed. I am kind of freaking out. Thoughts??

    Cody -- putting them with the rummies was a big mistake. As soon as they got large enough they started eating the rummies. I now have none left. I plan to address that in an upcoming Fincast.

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  9 лет назад

      ***** Hi Cody. I would not. Especially if they have paired up. The rams are a bit too meek to hang with these guys.

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  9 лет назад

      ***** These guys would do well with anything they can't swallow. They aren't "mean" but they are opportunistic. I kept them with adult cores with no trouble. I'd be surprised if they ate a cory. I would think you could keep them with oscars, geophagus species, convicts severums and other non-agressive cichlids. I kept the group with a large zebra chic lid (African MBUNA) and he harassed them into the corners.

      Warning: these acaras eat rummy nose even when they're small! My acaras are only 2 or so inches and have eaten almost all my rummies that were medium-sized!! Not tetra safe!

    Mine ate all my neon tetras!
    Also I had a pair spawn a few days ago. I am trying to determine if I should move the parents into the rearing tank or just move the fry?

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  9 лет назад

      Sean Mahoney Hi Sean -- Based upon my experience I would move the parents and leave the fry as they are quite fragile. My experience has been that one or the other of the parents will eat the fry.

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  9 лет назад

      Sean Mahoney Also -- Yes -- Mine ate all my rummies!

      fincasters thanks. I ended up buying a 5 gallon set up and transferring 75% of the fry into it. Used gravel and water from main tank. Running just air stone now. Will add sponge filter in a couple days. Got baby brine for feeding. So far so good. The parents are still doing their best to protect the ones I left in the in tank, but they are getting picked off pretty quick. I just moved all the remaining ones I could catch. Will keep updates coming.

    I got a question I have a 75 gal tank with 9 Congo tetras, 3 Cory cats,
    and 3 Upside down catfish. I have just recently added an Electric Blue
    Acara under the knowledge that all these fish are good tank mates. I
    have however found something to suggest that the Acara will eat my
    smaller fish (cory cats are the main concern) can someone tell my for
    certain if this will work? or has all my research been wrong?

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  8 лет назад

      Hi Aaron. They are great fish, and relatively gentle considering that they are cichlids. I would think that the fish you have with them will be fine.. I would be very careful about adding anything smaller than what you already have as they will eventually eat them. Hope this helps.

      fincasters I imagine and it is a pity because it is a beautiful fish that looks great accompanied by tetras, it's a shame that it can only be taken when they are small !! Thanks for the response and great aquarium !!

    Hope these aren't being sold in Florida Pet Stores... -just what we need, another Asian, African, or south american breed in our ponds, lakes & canals.... The Acara is to be disposed of when caught according to Florida law... I now know why they've made laws against these imported tropical fish; people just dump them when they become too big or too aggressive in their aquariums.. I know this because in our lake theres a school of HUGE oscars, & GINORMOUS red belly pacu & they dont belong here...Amyone wanna helo me catch & kill the mistakes of human idiots??
    They are destroying all of our natural habitats just like the damn pythons & boa's in the glades... -if people aren't happy w/ glow fish, pet store's should tell people to do some research first... Sad...
