  • Standard deviation and mean absolute deviation are used in statistics to measure how far apart individual data points are from the average or mean. In this video we will understand these two concepts by taking a simple example of math and history test scores.

    Hi @codebasics. Very nice explanation about MAD and SD. What happens if we use SD when the data is not normally distributed. At 7.33 minutes it states that using SD has nice properties. What are those nice properties?. A step-by-step method on when to use SD and when to use MAD on data points will be helpful. Thank you :)

    I think when that famous man was once quoted in saying "if you can't explain something in simple form maybe you don't understand it yourself" he was thinking of you. Good simple explanation ! ps: that was Einstein
    I precision shoot rifles and the SD now is a big issue and discussed when collecting an array of numbers.
    Only question I ask now is when someone says the SD is very low for a set of target hole variations calculations I ask compared to what ? No-one has an answer for that.

    Thanks so much for this video, it made the concept a lot clearer. I do have a question however, I don't know if I'm miscalculating but for the 4th table, wouldn't the score avg. be 71, which would change the MAD to 4? Because if you add up the scores (83+70+70+63+70+70), you get 426, divided by 6 (number of students), it's 71. Right?? Or am I missing something? And then for the abs. column it would change to: 12, 1, 1, 8, 1, 1; that totals 24. 24 : 6 = 4 for our MAD. Could somebody verify this or explain where my logic is off please?

    The number of times I go to the gym in weekdays, are given below along with its
    associated probability:
    x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    f(x) = 0.09, 0.15, 0.40, 0.25, 0.10, 0.01

    example: submission steps - how do they look on board?
    PS. Totally understand time constrain & just referring to your previous videos the way depth of explanation.
