Depends on what area of skincare you're interested in. For me:
Real-world reasonableness and chemistry understanding? Lab Muffin Beauty Science.
Very dry acne-prone skin, Asian beauty (and some western), serums and other steps outside of the bare basics, and interesting ingredients outside of primarily actives? I like Alice in the Rabbit Hole.
Cruelty-free vegan alternatives? (and general stuff) Cassandra Bankson.
Various interesting Japanese products? Tina Tanaka Harris.
As far as straight to the point, nigh no-thrills, safe (sometimes excessively so), back to basics, Dermatology-recommended information... absolutely Dr Dray, she's awesome in this area.

If you've never felt soft water, it's weird to get used to because it's almost like you rinsed the soap off your body but it still feels slippery. It's not inherently good or bad, just different. Where I live all well water is soft water.

a final rinse w/ distilled bottled water doesn't get rid of the scum that's already precipitated. you need to rinse with mildly acidic water to dissolve the scum. or select shampoos that are mildly acidic, whose formulation already accounts for the slight alkalinity of most local water sources.

I didn’t even know this was a thing until I moved for a bit from the Midlands of England to London in the southeast and it was dreadful! I’ve never had such bad hair and skin (my KP was at its worse - so, so itchy) and you’d just see all this limescale completely encrusted in the kettle (didn’t realise it was something I needed to check until I noticed bits of white stuff in my tea). The filters you can buy are expensive to replace every few months but definitely worth it when the water is that hard!

In fact it was voted the best water for a bubble bath 😂 and there's a new campaign encouraging everyone to top up water bottles with tap water because it's so safe. Also you don’t have synthetic fluoride - derived from discharge of fertilizer and aluminum industry added to 85% of water supplier here in the US. It is law to state derivative/source of the fluoride of state water suppliers by county/city here in the US, but nobody I know is aware when I bring it up (I live in CA). They also make in salon treatments called “Malibu crystal gel” that we can do as stylists to help remove the build up. I’ve literally seen green and rust colored buildup come off blonde hair. It immediately changes the texture of the hair for the better! It’s amazing the difference between clarifying shampoo (removing product buildup) and cheating shampoo (removing mineral deposits) ! I’m so late to this video, but I am in Michigan and over the past 9 months have suffered an insane amount of hair loss and breakage due to our hard water. My hair is past my butt so you can imagine this has been quite devastating, my once medium density hair now insanely thin. I was using using biolage during those 9 months. I wish I’d never touched it. I recently bought Wella’s fusionplex line, the shampoo, conditioner, and the intense hair mask. During my first shampoo with it, even while rinsing the shampoo from my hair I could feel how much smoother my hair was already. Seriously I’m in love, I cannot express how good this stuff is. My husband came home from work and out of nowhere "omg your hair looks better than it has all year, did you do something different? It’s shiny and smooth again" (again, from 1 wash, I didn’t even use the hair mask) the fact he noticed when he doesn’t even notice a shade change in my hair when I color it lol that should tell you everything. Also ion (sold at Sallys beauty supply) has a shampoo formulated for hard water and it’s really good too!

Thankfully, my hair doesn't turn green with chlorine either; however I am going to make a solution for my skin & hair, to neutralise the chlorine from the local swimming pool water. I will add the correct proportion of vitamin C powder to distilled water in a spray bottle. It will be more convenient for me to spray my hair, face and body with that after swimming and then showering and doing my skincare routine at home.

Thanks. I've recently been researching shower attachment water filters/softeners but there is a lot of confusion. From what I gather, a shower head filter can’t soften water properly. As Watergilter spot states" Showerhead filters might work well initially, but they will not have much longevity without the sodium ions’ frequent regeneration. The only way to continually regenerate the sodium in water softeners is by immersing them in robust brine solution, which shower water softeners are not always capable of handling. Without the regenerating process of sodium, the system essentially becomes useless."
I'd love to know if there are any showerhead water softeners that have solved this problem and actually work long-term.

I have very sensitive skin and the water where I live is unbelievably hard. I finally broke down and purchased the best shower filtering system that I could.
I was really struggling with dry skin, miserable with it. My hair was damaged, broken and started falling out almost as bad as when I had chemo many years ago.
The filter I bought reduces the calcium, lime, magnesium and chlorine out of my tap water then goes one step further and infuses water with vitamins A, C and E.
It was pricey but the results are worth it. And when you think of at long last, being comfortable in your own skin as well as reducing the amount of various hair and skin products necessary, I’m OK with a $60 expense.

Before we got the water softener install in our home in FL this helped my hair a lot. Those deposits alter your highlights along with giving your hair a straw like quality. Water softeners are the only way to safe your skin and hair. They protect your pipes. Bathrooms tubs and showers are a breeze to clean. Laundry comes out white and soft. Huge saving in body cleansers and cleaning products. Also Dr is so correct about skin conditions. When we lived in Phoenix ( another nasty water zone) installing the softener helped our son’s eczema.

I bought a Kinetico water softener. Let me tell you its a game changer. A little pricy but worth it. I really did noticed a big change in my skin and in my laundry. So soft now. I have very sensitive skin along with eczema. So it has been a struggle for me. BUT DR. Dray you have been such a big help! I work alot of hours and getting to the Dr office is not on my to do list when you own your own business. I know I know! But I do get great advice from your show. I usually watch your utube channel on my TV at home late at night and thats under my husband name oh and he would like to know if you would consider doing episode's on mens skin health. like shaving advice on how to not break out or turn beet red after a shave. Lol But I am a faithful follower of your show. Thank you! Keep up the great work!

This was a much needed video! Thanks Dr. Dray! I'm an American who lives in London and I've been wondering why the same skincare I used in the US is not working for me here, more specifically why it's pilling up when I apply everything in the morning. It doesn't happen so much at night because I double cleanse but in the morning i'm just washing my face with water. I think the stuff I use at night is not acting well with the hard water and gets glued to my skin. So when I put on my morning skincare it's reacting to what was left from the evening routine. I guess this means I need to use micellar water in the mornings to remove the skincare from previous night which is not ideal but must be done.

I lived in a house with well water and the stains it leaves on things slowly over time do not come off easily. It takes potentially dangerous chemicals to get rid of these stains especially if you are like me and hate scrubbing. BTW, those stains are made of some rather hard minerals so scrubbing doesn't work so well!!

Hi Dr Dray I live in Scotland and we have soft water. Whenever I travel anywhere my skin and hair go a bit mental. I already have rosacea and eczema, so hard water is not my friend. it makes my hair and skin even drier than it already is. I think I would have to have a water softener in my shower, if I lived in a hard water area. On holiday I rinse my face with bottled water when cleansing, to try not using hard water on my face. I'm always glad to be showering at home once I get back. Many other areas of the UK do have hard water though, especially the south of England. I take a towel and a pillowcase on holiday to avoid using the hotel ones on my face at all. I also have to be really careful what laundry detergent I use and taking my own stuff helps with that. I pack microfibre towels to use when I'm away for my body too. It's a struggle lol and eats up some baggage allowance, but it's worth it not to be scratching and miserable whilst away. Best wishes.

Yes, hard water definitely makes acne worse. I would have clear skin and then our water softener would act up or break and my skin would be a mess.
Also when going to Chicago, that has horribly hard water, I would return home with breakouts.

    • @stacywolfe2911

    • @joelleaittama1416
      @joelleaittama1416 2 года назад +1

@@stacywolfe2911 Yes, a water softener is a must. I have oily skin, and the hard water would make it more oily. Maybe because of the cleansers with sulfates.
We also have rust in our water, and that is especially irritating, so we have a rust remover along with the water softener. You can get rust filters with your water softener too.
I would use the oil based cleansers or a balm, like Dr. Dray suggested, because I think the big problem is not being able to get your sunscreen or makeup off properly, and that just leads to more congestion.
Then do a second cleanse with a sulfate free cleanser.
I would also spray my skin with a distilled water after washing. Not sure if that is actually something, but it worked for me, when traveling.

I use clay in powder, mix it with water, and put it on my roots only, leave for some time, and rinse it. I believe the clay deeply cleanses my skin and works best when I leave it to get dry. But be careful when rinsing it off, soften it first with water so that your hair doesn't get broken. Also, it is okay to use a bit of clay powder mixed with water and shampoo for a peeling effect on your scalp. 🕊 God bless! In Jesus Name!
