PFM!!!! Such brilliant music. Love that sax & tenor banjo sound. The Flanagan Brothers surely sounded something like this in the smoky, sweaty New York joints in the teens & twenties of the last century. Well done Brian & Jim, Seamus & John. Heroes all.

Beyond marvellous. Who would have thought a sax could blend in so well? Not me but it's perfect. Well done lads.

Sounds like gramps, he used to play a mean irish style piano and I remember a clarinet player who would come over with the tenor banjoist. I strummed just enough to keep up but I was just a kid. Nice

Like I said on another clip, A.T.R. is probably one of the most underrated bands in the Irish trad. scene...I just wish they would tour more in N.A. I don't think this has ever happened :-(

This was recorded in a pub in Ballina, Co Mayo in 2009 for the Geantrai programme on TG4 (Tina G), the Irish language TV station.
John (on the banjo) is a Londoner from Bethnal Green way, now returned to the family base in County Roscommon. He's the most talented Irish traditional musician ever to come out of London but, as good as this is, I prefer the Edenderry Reel set played on the same programme where the two lead players are on Fiddle and Flute.
This stuff is as good as gets, imo.

banjo234 I was in primary and secondary school, in east London with John Carty. Once we were in the lower sixth form, where we no longer had to wear uniform or ties, John and I were part of a trio, that chose to wear ties! John bought me and the other chap (Richard Drea) ties that were made from Connemara Tweed. RC

Just to say that the version of the first tune is nearer to the one played here on the " abc notation" site than the one given on "the session".. Listen to the fiddle player backed by guitar playing "francie mooneys and if there werent any women in the world on youtube. Also the version played at sessions i go to. John F Dublin

@jayjayjayjayism there are a few who do sax / trad ...see if you can get Noel Sweeney...he has put a few on CD
There are tuning problems as the sax is Bflat ...a C melody sax gets around this nicely. The switch from B flat to C is indeed quite effective ...a tonic / dominant change can give even more lift ( B flat to F)
