Thanks! Another value of learning a tune by roman numerals is that it can make it easier to transpose tunes into different keys, but I also find it harder to remember roman numerals in the long term. I think both methods can really reinforce each other.
Usually I think in roman numerals(it helps me to recognize the changes) but your way to learn as melodies helps to internalize the harmony.Very cool.

I'm a guitarist and I tend to think in terms of shapes and hand positions. I rely a lot on muscle memory but my fingers sometimes get confused.
