I’m a guitar player and only really play piano on my mom’s on the weekends. Your channel has changed the way I approach everything I do musically. Thanks a ton!
Dude you just blew my mind with this video. I sat down and finally could improvise without having to stumble my way torturously through a lot of trial and error until I made something that sounded good. You've motivated me to truly upgrade my barely passable music theory knowledge now that I can see how to apply it better.
Ah, love this comment! That’s so great to hear ❤️ Really pleased my little video has been able to help and that I’m part of your journey! Happy exploring! 🎹🎵
The beauty of these voicings and bits is how much more emotion is put forth from the piano. Now add his dynamics and you’ve got feeling in every note. Thank you for this Michael!
I’ve been searching on how to play piano spontaneously in RUclips for so long and I’ve finally found the right video. This is what I’m trying to find, breaking my own way of playing chords 🔥🔥🔥
Man I needed this. I've heard people talking about this before but you have such a great way of explaining the logic behind the choices you make. The voicing examples are very useful for someone who's not so sure of what they should be playing or what they're hearing on a song. It's also great that you were able to give us a sensible way to actually practice it and didn't just say "look for what sounds good". Some teachers can't really decode more "fluid" concepts like this into practice examples. Also, the on-screen graphics are so good, I really liked how you managed to display where the notes you're playing fall in the subdivision grid. This channel is pure gold!
Such a simple progression but you make it sound so beautiful. I was stuck in a trap of thinking that just playing the root and 5th in the left hand was too rudimentary but this video shows me how I don't have to worry about putting so much color with the left and can instead add it more judiciously with the right. You have a great gift for teaching. Thanks!!
Got into keyboarding cos our church keyboardist had to leave for Camp. Been playing roots on the left hand and chords for a couple weeks. Knew it was time to evolve, but couldn't put to words what I was looking for. Then came this video. Great stuff, Sir. Just wanted to say thanks. This is such a good approachable way for me to learn. I'm a guitarist primarily, so the concept of licks resonates. The piano can seem daunting because there are so many degrees of freedom. But your way of doing it constrains it to extremely useful techniques such as left hand primarily doing 1/5 and kind of riffing with right hand to "fill out" the chord. And BTW your choices of chord voicings are just tear-jerkingly beautiful. You've reduced the problem to a manageable size making me think I could do this....
You got this Laura, I thought this video might be a useful one for you. It's not that complicated when you break it down but it can go a long to getting some freedom to your playing. Happy practising!
Highly Informative! Im a pianist with 7 years of experience yet i still remained an intermediate pianist i dont know whats next for me to learn , but this channel gives me motivation to go back on track where i left off
This is a fantastic breakdown, thank you so much! I am one of those people with knowledge on the fundamentals like you mentioned at the start, but struggle to make things sound more lush and fluid. Different ways of thinking on how to bring color and motion to playing is something I struggled with and now I have lots to practice on.
@@michaelkeithson Absolutely! It's helped a lot bringing a lot more brightness and color to my playing. It also explains why I always had more fun with basic minor chords: they have the tension built into them. You gotta work at it a bit more with the major chords to make them interesting :)
This lesson was aimed right at my ability level. I am finding that learning the piano is helping my guitar playing and my song composition. I am finding that on piano, the songs I’ve written on guitar are seen from a different angle and it opens up other directions possible for said guitar song. On piano it is significantly easier to produce notes and chords than on a string instrument…but that just allows the complexity to emerge elsewhere! Thanks mate!
From somebody whose favorite chord today is VII7/V7, triads are an extremely powerful music tool and no less valuable than the fattest chord you can stack.
Completely agree Geoff, but I don't think it should be the only thing you use and I think a lot of people don't know how to break away from just triads.

The amount of work you put into this really shines, I havent learned so much piano styles and looking at the notes and intervals as you just thought me. Really helpful thank you very much
I have been playing the piano over 25 days and its fun! Actually been playing for 3 months now and loving it. I have been playing guitar for 27 years along with bass, drums and mandolin for several. At least I know what I am doing when it comes to theory which has been helpful. Playing around with lots of chord shapes, getting into extensions and so forth as well as what you described in terms of putting the basic bass notes in with my left hand and attempting a melody within the key with the right hand. Based on your video I know I am on the right track 😁. A big takeaway for me is to start adding intervals. I will start to add that in, thanks!
Thanks for this video! Going through a very tough time in my life and the piano is my solace. I'll be watching more. Thanks for giving me something to keep my mind off my troubles.
@michaelkeithson thank you so much for your words of encouragement! Music keeps me grounded. I appreciate your straight forward approach. Have a great day!
'I'm going to answer that question...[slight pause]...I'm going to do my best, to answer that question'. Shouted with laughter, hooked in the first 20 seconds. And the idea of outlining the top with intervals, not just single notes [guitarist speaking] - ooh yes, have to have a look at that.
bro ur amazing, i play in church, and i’ve been trying to grow and this has been so beneficial, love u bro and God loves u so much more, He’s given you an awesome talent, He’s calling you to Him everyday that you wake up 👍🏽
Your section on voicings is beautifully done. Many thanks! As a guitarist that went the opposite way - I have played this note for note and had my mind blown. You have given me a lot to explore on my new instrument. I've managed to insert another set of scale and insert low notes descending to low E1 a baritone B1 and from there fifths going up G2 to e4.
I've always enjoyed your playing along with all the musical insights. This is a nice glimpse into that sound that is yours. I'm a guitarist so it's a little trickier to apply some of this but it is still applicable. I think part of your particular sound is those seconds that you scatter throughout your meanderings. Very nice. Thanks for passing it along.
Sounds like it’s time to buy a piano then! 😂 Thanks for watching even though it’s not necessarily aimed at you, glad there were still some takeaways. Yes, those added 2nds/9ths definitely integral to my playing. Thanks for the comment man 👍
Fabulous stuff. Very glad I just found this channel. Just the right mix of steel and humor in the delivery, a great pace, lots of great info, no airs. Thank you.
Thankyou .magical sounds there .showing how many ways there are to colour a progression beyond what you first learn and often don’t try and improve what is already a pleasing sound .
Excellent tutor for beginners and improvers who want to explore harmonically interesting music. There are many other super RUclips videos for piano, but none explain things this clearly. For more advanced tutorials, I recommend the Mangold Project and Kent Hewitt, but there are many others. It's largely about what works better for you.
That’s great to hear, especially on a video like this which specifically aimed at pianists, good to know there’s some value in there for others too! Cheers for the comment 🙏
hey man, this video is great. I've noticed I've just been playing triads and a bass root when I play piano, and wanted to escape that for the longest time. this video was so helpful in showing what I can do. And your whole aesthetic is wonderful. The pacing and those pauses let me absorb the information. Thank you for these videos, appreciate it!
Thank you so much, this is so helpful. I’ve been playing for years but learnt as a child to only read notes so have found it really challenging to just play! I have learnt so much just in this one video and am keen to watch more, for both me and my students! 🙏🙏🙏
Hi Juanita! That's so great to hear. Really pleased you enjoyed the video and found it so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to comment, much appreciated 🙏
I mean, this is an eye opening video with so many "Aha" moments, that is at least to me unreal. I have seen so many videos on this topic. I am many years guitar player, learning piano in my 40s and this pace, topics and flow of this video is just amazing. Never seen better teaching videos on piano. Thanks.
This is by FAR the best music video I've seen on youtube, and Ive watched thousands. This is all I want to do - i just want to play like this. I don't have the intelligence to learn the piano inside out, I just want to noodle about and create beautiful music like this. I couldn't hit the subscribe button fast enough!
Also, please add a gratuity button to your channel so people can send you money. This IS the video I have spent literally years looking for. So at the very least I would like to buy you a few beers!
Thanks Mike, I really appreciate your very kind message and really glad you found the video useful. I do have a link in the description to my Buymeacoffee page where you can donate should you wish to. Thank you 🙏 I have a couple of other piano specific videos that you might find useful so be sure to check those out too! 🎹
As long as Michael posts videos I’ll keep watching them. Learned more about applying music theory in the last few days of binge watching these than 14 years of classical lessons. Would love to see your process to go from a basic lead sheet into a full arrangement applying these concepts!
Wow, it's inspiring! Playing the individual notes, according to the scale, means there is no need to strictly limited to remember which chord to play. I always just follow the chord, maybe adding some passing notes
Your lesson is very good and infomative. You have a great sense of teaching etc. What I think would help is to show your hands playing. We would have a more understanding about what your playing.
Thank you for the kind comment 🙏 Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, a few people have mentioned that and I'll be sure to have an overhead camera for future piano videos.
Colouring book analogy , is GENIUS ! i will always look at piano noodling in this way from this day on ,😊😊😊😊😊😊 and DYNAMICS , :piano forte ,,,, its all in the name of the beast 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
Ah thanks man, great to hear. Didn’t envisage this being particularly useful for anyone other than pianists so I’m pleased you feel that way. Cheers for the comment. 👍
I have been playing for many years but still got useful tip here. I need to have some more spicy options and not just with endless dim arpeggios and augmented chords😅. Thanks for sharing
Wow just wow, as a beginner (2 years now) this concept has not been explained to me by my tutor, all I must learn is straight forward reading with no soul and heart.
I do think it's really important to learn and know your simple chords and triads first before branching off into ideas like these. Although if you're being taught to just read music then you may never get taught this stuff. You might also appreciate another video of mine: ruclips.net/video/FSc36GUkQYY/видео.html Happy practising!! 🎹
@@michaelkeithson I know nearly all the triad diatonic chords in most of the major keys and can work the more complicated ones out on the fly, to practice playing in keys I usually play the same triads (using different progressions) in both hands using inversions to stay as close to where I started playing from, my tutor insists that I read which I find very difficult but he says it is the only way, I have tried the method you showed in the video and wow!! You can play 6th’s, 7th’s, 9th’s, minors, suspended 2-4, any any combination in between 😃, you have opened my eyes to the concept that it does not have to be all black and white but as long as I follow the theory rules of chord construction and it sounds good then I am a winner, my tutor says that my strong point is my knowledge of music theory which I studied hard and long, I play the keys using the circle of fifths (and fourths) thank you for a great video and the way you explained it made sense, I also now have a better understanding of what and how (voicing’s) can be used, I am right in assuming that a voicing is the same notes that make up a (let’s say) C7 but played at different places, octaves or inversions (or spread out so as to speak) on the key board? Regards Alan
@@Humanbeering Hey Alan, I think learning to read music can be really valuable but I think it does depend on what you hope to achieve as a pianist. If you want to play modern music (pop, rock, jazz, folk, etc.) you can become an amazing player without ever having any need to read. Glad you got something out of the video 👍
What a fantastic tutorial. Thank you. As someone who has played guitar for donkeys years and has a good grasp on theory but like most guitarists is a hopeless sight reader, this video is a God send. The whole left hand right hand co-ordination thing I would have thought should not be too much of an issue for someone who used two hands to play every note, but that's the issue. It's the fact that the hands are playing different notes on the piano. More a matter of brain co-ordination than hand co-ordination I suspect. That and muscle memory for interval shapes. Getting that locked in in 5ths in all keys would seem to be the first step, then getting that on auto pilot. I'm trying to push my sight reading at the same time with tons of simple tunes, never playing the same one more than twice on the same day. I think with reading, interval recognition is probably key too. Once again very helpful video thank you. Subscribed and looking forward to exploring your Chanel.

Triads are great!! We just want to make sure we’re not locked into using root position triads over the same root

bro ur amazing, i play in church, and i’ve been trying to grow and this has been so beneficial, love u bro and God loves u so much more, He’s given you an awesome talent, He’s calling you to Him everyday that you wake up 👍🏽
Thanks for the comment man. Glad it was useful. 👍
Thanks Mark! Really pleased that this video has been useful and interesting for guitarists too! Thanks for watching 🙏
Thanks for watching even though it’s not necessarily aimed at you, glad there were still some takeaways.
Yes, those added 2nds/9ths definitely integral to my playing.
Thanks for the comment man 👍
@@michaelkeithson A piano purchase is definitely on the horizon...thanks for the inspiration.
@@texaspete7897 Good to hear! 🎹
I just stumbled upon this channel, and boys it one of the biggest gold mines I have ever come across!
Thanks Jake!! Glad you stumbled this way. Hope you enjoy the rest of the content. Cheers for the comment 🙏
A real musician teaching how to make music. Amazing.
🙏 Thanks Andreu! Appreciate the kind comment. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Fabulous stuff. Very glad I just found this channel. Just the right mix of steel and humor in the delivery, a great pace, lots of great info, no airs. Thank you.
I'm glad you're here too! Thanks for the comment, glad you're enjoying the videos. 👍
Thankyou .magical sounds there .showing how many ways there are to colour a progression beyond what you first learn and often don’t try and improve what is already a pleasing sound .
Cheers Michael! Appreciate your comment 🙏
Thanks for the nice comment and contribution. 👍
Superb ! I'm not a keyboard player but I always enjoy and learn a lot from your videos.
That’s great to hear, especially on a video like this which specifically aimed at pianists, good to know there’s some value in there for others too! Cheers for the comment 🙏
This is the most useful piano video Of.All.Time. Ty Michael!
Ah, nice. I'm really glad you feel that way. Happy practising!! 🎹
hey man, this video is great.
Thanks for the nice comment man 🙏 Much appreciated. Glad the video has been useful.👍
Thanks.
Thanks Lubomir, I really appreciate your nice comment! Glad you enjoyed and found it helpful. Happy practising!! 🎹
Thank you 🙏
I have a couple of other piano specific videos that you might find useful so be sure to check those out too! 🎹
As long as Michael posts videos I’ll keep watching them. Learned more about applying music theory in the last few days of binge watching these than 14 years of classical lessons. Would love to see your process to go from a basic lead sheet into a full arrangement applying these concepts!
Ha! Thanks Chip! I appreciate the kind comment and really glad I've been able to help you on your journey 👍
I love your videos!! So good quality! Keep it up!
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying them 👍
Very helpful and easy to follow. Brilliant! Thank you.
Good to hear! Thanks for the comment 👍
Really good lesson. Love the way you break it down!
Thanks Rory! Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Wow, it's inspiring! Playing the individual notes, according to the scale, means there is no need to strictly limited to remember which chord to play.
I always just follow the chord, maybe adding some passing notes
Thanks Ida! Happy practising! 🎹
By far the best RUclips piano lesson I've watched in my life. Thank you!!!
☺️🙏 Thank you so much Louis for your kind comment. I'm really glad you feel this way. 🙏
This is exactly what I wanted someone to explain to me. Thank you so much.
Awesome, happy to help! Thanks for the nice comment Richard 🙏
Great charm and well put together my man 🙏🏾
Cheers Dan, appreciate your support brother 🙏
Best video I ever watched on getting fluent at the piano. This stuff is golden
Ah thanks Tobias! 🙏
Glad you've found some value in the video, thanks for the comment.
Absolutely outstanding, Michael!!! That is the best outline for enriching the way to use chords I have seen online!!! Thank you so much!!!

You really do magic on that instrument, i hope i can learn one day what you showed onl in this video
Ah, thanks man 🙏. You got this, just takes some commitment and patience. 👊
The graphics on the screen are the kicker.
Brilliant explanation and practical demonstration. Some very tasteful note choices
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great information. It sounds lovely. I will practice these many techniques.
Thanks Alex, glad you enjoyed it. Happy practising!! 🎹
As a bass player, this information is incredibly valuable. And the delivery is perfect. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. Glad there was something you could take away from the video. Cheers. Happy practising! 🎹
It's been a while since I've seen a musical instruction that will actually be useful to my endeavors. Excellent, thank you.
Great to hear, glad you found it useful. Happy practising my friend! 🎹🎵
You might also appreciate another video of mine: ruclips.net/video/FSc36GUkQYY/видео.html
Happy practising!!
Regards
Alan
Thank you Stephen! 🙏 A might take a little time and persistence but it's all super achievable. Thanks for the sub 👍
I’ve been looking for a tutorial like this! Thank you!
