  • The Bombardier Global 5500 and Global 6500 are jet aircraft of business aviation in the class of large business jets created by the Canadian company Bombardier Aerospace. They are the latest versions of the Global aircraft family, second only to the 7500 model.
    The 5500 model accommodates up to 16 passengers and has a range of up to 10,927 km. The model 6500 is larger, accommodates up to 17 passengers and has a range of 12.223 km.
    Today we will get acquainted with these planes, examine the brand new Global 6500 and study its capabilities as an aircraft and as a limousine.

    The prototype of this fantastic airplane is called the Challenger 600, and is currently on display at the Air Force Heritage Museum and Air Park in Winnipeg Manitoba. What I found fascinating is it was originally a concept design by Bill Lear, of LearJet fame who collabed with Canadair to create a new fleet of business class jets. Eventually that design was eventually stretched, modified and upgraded to become the Bombardier CRJ and Global Express series of aircraft.
    Both LearJet and Canadair were absorbed by Bombardier in the mid 90s, and this year in 2022 the last LearJet was built. Great to see that Bill Lear's vision is alive and well after almost 50 years from concept to production and shows no signs of slowing!

    The Challenger actually has its roots in mid 1970s.
    Bombardier Business Jets is all that is left. The main head office was closed and what remains has some offices in a small building at the Dorval assembly plant. All the rest was liquidated (and half of the C-Series was litterally donated to Airbus for $0). CRJ programme shut and rights sold to Mitsibuishi, and all the deHavilland products progressively sold to a BC company which has recreated de Havilland Canada to house the products (including teh Canadiar water bombers).
    All of these transations left Bombardeir holding the debts from each programme, so what is left of Bombardier today holds a LOT of debt and will have to sell its business jets if it can't meet debt payments.
    Ironically, not the first trouble. A couple years afrer 9-11, when Bombardier didn't think it woudl be affected and continued producing CRJ-200s by the dozen at Dorval, the company neared failure. At this time, the Beaudoin family (descendants of Armand Bombardier) injected new cash into company by buying the original part of Bombardier, the recreational products. The ironiy they aren't allowed to use the name "Bombardier" despite being the family it came from. So their are called BRP and focus instead of the various brands they purchased ovewr the years. However, their logo is the original Bombardeir logo ( wheel with cogs for tracked vehicles such as snowmobiles and sidewalk ploughs).
    During its liquidation, Bombardier sold the Downview (former de Havilland site) with limited time lease so a developper could build condos on the former airport site. So when Bombardeir sold the Dash-8 and all remaining de Havilland patents to Longview Aviation, (de Havilland Canada), the later inherited a Dash-8 production facility that already had an eviction notice. Due to COVID, they managed to extend it and recently restarted production to finish the last few of Dash-8s on order book, after which they need to find a new production site. (and the union in Ontario is very unhappy due to likelyhood that the Dash-8 will be moved to western Canada where longview is based). Bombardier had written off the Dash-8 in the alst decade and hadn't improved production to lower costs and didn't push for new sales. It had done same with the CL415 water bomber.
    Also interesting: Bombardeir had inherited the twin otter when it bought deHavilland and never did anything with it. When the rights were sold to Longview, (then operating as Viking air) started to draw plans for the Twin Otter 400 and the plane has started to sell quite well for small markets and specialized missions. (can be fitted with skis, wheels, floats).
    It is still unclear who will buy the Challenger and Gobal 7500 from what is left from Bombardier and if BRP will inherits itw own name back. Us investors in the company lost a lot of money in what is essentially a controlled bankruptcy.

      A regional airliner based on the Global platform would be a CRJ. The main difference between the CRJ and Global models are the wings and engines, because the business jet market demands much higher performance and longer range than regional flights.

    • @Colaholiker
      @Colaholiker 2 года назад +1

      @@ohutchie True, and I don't want to see them squeeze out anything with such a long range, but a typical regional airliner cabin. My longest CRJ flight was fom Detroit to San Antonio in 2019, and even though I really like those small planes, that was already pushing the limit of staying comfortable for long enough. I sure wouldn't mind hours of flying if an aircraft has such a luxurious business jet cabin, but on a regional airliner/flying sardine can? Hell no!

    OK, so if you chose the 6500 over the 5500 you pay an additional 10 million bucks for 80 cm in length and 1200 km more range. The cabins are of equal size, since the additional 80 cm in the Global 6500 are occupied by the additional crew rest. Furthermore you need to pay a third pilot if you want to use the additional range of the 6500. I would say the 5500 is the much better buy. I can see future updates to the 6500 and 5500 by adding the larger windows of the 7500 and also the side stick cockpit of the 7500. I don't see room and need for improvement beyond.

    One of the things I often noticed deleted is the lack of some flexibility of these jets. People complained about media censorship, but it is alive and well in advertising. The airlines with their big long range jets are still the king in long range travel, but even their jet give no speed advantage. It is more freedom in the air in a biz jet, you can smoke if you feel like it, and you can skip dumb airline regulation about luggage max and vaccination etc.Those few hours of comfort cost a whopping $75 million and maybe $12 million annually for operating cost. But everywhere you go, you are dragging along 2 pilots and a flt attendant, whose personal schedule not likely the same as mine, that is if I even have a schedule, even if you pay them to stay by the plane. So actually , the max freedom is a medium size turbo prop, rated for single pilot. With a big rubber fuel cell in the back to cross oceans. Something I can fly myself registered in a country that have very slack medical and tax for airplanes.

    This was an excellent opportunity - sadly missed - to break away from the stereotype of a white male as pilot while the hostess was a white female. If we are ever to increase minority representation in the airline industry, it would have been great to have a female pilot (of any race) and a male steward imho. Otherwise this was a great vlog.

    • @Eternal_Tech
      @Eternal_Tech 2 года назад +1

      If females are interested in becoming pilots, then they are free to pursue this career, just as males can do. The fact is, as of this writing, males are generally more interested in becoming pilots than females. Conversely, females tend to show greater interest in becoming nurses than males.
      As long as nobody is being discriminated against, having the sexes being interested in different things is not bad. "infinite diversity in infinite combinations."

    • @uwanttono4012
      @uwanttono4012 2 года назад

      @@Eternal_Tech As a general proposition "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" is a good thing. However, your implication in suggesting that (a) females are not as interested in flying as males is open to serious doubt if only because (b) they have not historically been given the same opportunities to fly as men because flying has been considered a historically a "man's job". No reasonable person can deny the validity of that proposition I would suggest.

    • @Eternal_Tech
      @Eternal_Tech 2 года назад +1

      @@uwanttono4012 It is not just piloting aircraft that show a greater interest from one sex versus the other. In the United States today, approximately 60% of college students are female, while about 40% are male. In fact, women have comprised the majority of college students since 1979. Therefore, this shows that females are generally not discriminated against when it comes to college admissions. However, when it comes to choosing a college major, there are some majors that show a sex-based preference. For example, engineering and computer science majors tend to be dominated by men, while psychology, sociology, and social work majors tend to be dominated by women.
      In addition, there was a study that came out a few years ago that showed that when women have a choice, they tend to prefer certain professions over others. It showed that in countries known for their gender equality, such as the Scandinavian countries, women tend to choose more stereotypical female positions than in nations with less gender equality.
      Sex-based preferences extend beyond careers to encompass everyday life. For example, while men can wear makeup, the majority of men choose not to wear this. However, there is generally strong interest among women and girls to wear makeup. The makeup manufacturers would love to expand their market to include males, but males for the most part do not show an interest in wearing cosmetics.
      If you want to encourage females to be engineers, computer scientists, and pilots, and encourage males to be nurses, daycare workers, and kindergarten teachers, be my guest. However, you may be disappointed in the results in societies in which people are free to make their own choices.
      Sex-based preferences may be influenced by societal expectations, but they may also be influenced by biology. Men and women literally have different concentrations of hormones flowing throughout their bodies.
      All this being said, there should be no sex-based discrimination. However, it should be recognized that even without discrimination, sex-based preferences may exist.

      Even if he focused on aviation aspects of what is going on there, he would be at a high risk. Anything besides stating obvious facts like the destruction of AN-225 in his last video, puts him in the danger of getting in trouble for spreading "fake news". If you live in Russia, you are in the wrong spot to publicly make any statement about current events there and in Ukraine, unless you say what your government wants you to say. And regardless if that aligns with his personal opinion or not (no speculation here), you would not want to have that on this channel.
      I rather have him concentrate on "safe" topics and be able to continue enjoying his great videos.
      So it is not weird at all that he does what he does. It is totally understandable and the best choice for both him and us.

      Is there no place anymore to enjoy a simple aviation video that the poison of politics must rear its ugly head, simply because the channel creator is Russian?

    An airplane for oligarchs and billionaires. Does Bombardier pay anything for this free advertising? Gross.

    And the vulgar-rich who can afford this, likely have a yacht and mansion(s) to match. And they are probably working on stealing your tiny savings and retirement fund.
