I remember i saw this back in 2019 and i watched the first episode and i thought this isn’t for me. Cut to November 2020 and i binged it out if boredom and its my favorite show ever and is why i talk in a British accent
I really liked Hilda characte and personality wise. Brave, daring and best of all, help anyone as she see the best in everyone when at time isn't so great at first like the Nisse and Woodman! She would make a great tole models to the kids out there!
You are so excited about the animation and it can be felt throughout the entire video and it is just so enjoyable to watch, it is contagious. Also your tuts on harmony are so nice and structured and answer so many of my doubts about the program that I just wanted to say thanks today for all the help and animation love. Cheers.
This was an absolute joy to watch; massively interesting and your joy in the animation is contagious. I hope you'll do more in the future, I could watch hours of this :'D
This was so sweet to watch This video is even better than what I was looking for! While Watching hilda I noticed how the animation moves and keept asking "how many frames are here? Why does it feels so natural?" While slowing the episode to count the frames, I was surprised there isn't actually that many frames and it was a normal 12 frames per second rate, it wasn't about the number of the frames but about how the frames were drawn. The animators did a fantastic job. They are truly masters and I can see the love they put in every scene. Also what a beautiful choice of an episode to breakdown I really loved watching it. This video is very unique there's no other video that breakdown animation this good. Hearing you praise the animation every time was very motivational I just wanted to go and start animating haha. Just want to say this's a great breakdown thank you it's very helpful
Hi 2 years later! I love Hilda so much. I can’t stop rewatching it. I’m currently reading the graphic novels. I agree with you, I love the animation. I love 2D animation.
excellent breakdown for such good character animation!! That punchy, bouncy feeling of proper pacing and smears between poses is everything and you're so right- this scene is great!!
I want to get my hands on Mercury rigs so bad to dissect them! I'm not even a rigger, but when I see a good rig I just need to know how its made! Just found your channel and I love it! Even though I'm already working in the industry these kinda of videos always teach me something new!
Every time I watch this show, I am mesmerised by the visuals, the story, and the personality of each character. I want this show to never end! Loved your video :)
Hilda is such a good show. I have seen all the episodes and I fell in love with the animation, the keyframing, the art style, etc. One set of good news is that the creators are working on a season 2 which will be coming out this fall.
Never saw the show, past my time. Watching animation for decades just learning to do it. Was going to do this with a few shows, break down a few episodes to see the tech work of it. I shoot video so I do the same thing with a scene from a movie..... I'm still kindergarten & finger paints animations though ;p
I had to pause the video midway, can't take so much of this goodness all in one! Such a great video breaking down the beauty of the animation. Really nicely done! This is so helpful and inspiring! Thank you! Please do more. Definitely subscribed! :)
Thank you for this video. I am totally in love with this show since I saw a run cycle test a year ago!! Was so hyped when it came out on netflix! As for recommandation, you probably heard of it since it isnt new, but season 1 of Star vs the forces of evil was also animated by Mercury I think. It got pretty nice snappy cartoon animations and actions scenes!
Love the series and thanks for such a great breakdown. If I may.. a bit of technical question: how much if any of Hilda characters is rigged? or is it only FBF? I've been learning Bob's Burger animation trying to understand their rigging process and was horrified (well disappointed) to learn that it is actually FBF from the second series onwards (which explained a lot actually). I'm generally baffled this question when trying to analyse the gazillion shows made using Toon Boom
Mercury shows are all rigged. They're super detailed 360 rigs. It's getting to the point where it can be hard to tell because the rigs have so many pieces they can all be adjusted to look like totally new pieces.
I have got to watch Hilda! I've been dying to! I've heard so many great things about it. Mercury Filmworks also does a show called Atomic Puppet. That one is fantastic as well.
I like Sarah & Duck. I like the line art and the stylized trees. What I like best is that it is a calm show. Sometimes the stories don’t have an arc, and will just end and it works. It is made with CelAction2d which I think has more of a European base.
your work is amazing, soon I will post some animations using your rig and with the things I learned watching your videos. you could criticize more other works, it's great to see
Earlier seasons are definitively 2D, but i'm curious about the 3rd season, because while some things are definitively 3D (cars and trains), I'm still unsure if most of the character are actually 3D with a really well made shader, 2D but with 3D models really helping or fully 2D because the animations are so damn smooth and well made.
@@StylusRumble having watched more carefully there is definitively some 3D involved, but with how well made the 2D is it is hard to decide on certain scenes They definitively have 3D models of the characters, and I think they use them for far away shots with a shader, but close ups/normal shots are 2D, maybe with 3D used to help/reference. I'm curious to see what will be your opinion :)
This is a lovely breakdown which also happens to show so many principles of cartoon animation in a fun and organic way. Thank you for showing such great enthusiasm! They're using Toon Boom or something similar right? Do you know if they're hand-drawing all frames or using rigged cutouts? It's so well animated I can't really tell!
Hey stylus, idk if you watched avatar the last airbender but it is one of the best animated shows of all time in my opinion. I also would love to see the animation breakdown of it!
I'm not sure, it's been a loooong time since I did a rigging interview. But a few things to keep in mind, usually by the time the interview you they really want you to be awesome. You've already met their requirements on paper, they just want to make sure you're not a jerk- and verify your paper stuff. So if you say on paper "master-class rigger with super powers," You gotta back that up. However, if you're a junior, they mostly are looking for the "not jerk" part. You might be asked some technical questions about the software, or your experience in it. How would you approach a difficult rig. At the end of the day, most of the leads I know want someone who has some problem solving skills, bonus if they've animated and can anticipate the common problems. Also, they want someone who will follow instructions (the lead decides how something is rigged, so if you rig your favorite way and they have to change it to the studio standard it makes them ragey AF.) They want someone who is not afraid to ask questions- but also knows how to use the help menu. "How should I approach this complex shoulder" = good question "What is the hotkey for this tool" = help menu question. Also, most important of all, don't be a jerk :)
i have a question that i've asked on your twitter and ig . did the industry proffesinals did all of this animation using the frame by frame technique ?? or do they also use rigs ?. its crazy on how they achieve all of this in a small amount of time. i mean i can only make 2 second worth of animation in 1 hour using frame by frame.
With animation like this, is the final pop-y ness all in the animation technique? ir is any part of it up to the software they used to animate and render? if software is part of it, do you know what software this studio used?
It's technique. This show was animated by Mercury filmworks. They use Harmony Premium for their shows and if you compare them they all have their own style, they have show reels on their website worth looking at. :)
If the industry switched back to flash, I would quit animation and paint watercolours for the tourists because I can't stand it lol. The big draw to Harmony is you can rig the characters. It was designed for cut out animation. Flash was designed for 2001 web design. The drawing tools are also way better. The palette library is a pain but makes colour swaps way easier. It's sister software storyboard pro makes setting up all the scenes way easier. Basically everything is easier and faster in harmony. I don't have any of the Hilda files, I just took a section of it and imported it into harmony. (because it's also super easy to import video, image sequences, and 3D assets)
@@StylusRumble Wow! Thank you so much, friend. I thought it had been ignored but now it has made me extremely happy! If I ever become famous, I will remember you ;-D

The animation looks good. BUt honestly I do not get calling this beautiful. It sort of looks ugly. The colours are muted and washed out and boring. Only judging from this clip. So unless you have your video players settings to look like almost sepia tone and washed out yellows and browns, then I am not sure I get the artistic preference. But I love your videos man.
It's supposed to have a slightly more realistic colour palette I think and all the colours go so well together. If you haven't seen the show already you have to watch it and if you still want to know about the colours I suggest watching a video called the Colours of Hilda. It explains it far better than I can
I would rather exaggerate how much I like something than try to diminish someone's joy of something. Nothing is literally perfect but telling someone not to enjoy something too much is like taking a kid's icecream. Go find something to be happy about. It's good for you.
