I’ll never forget taking my dad to see this in theaters when I was 15. The looks he gave me the whole time of “what are we watching?” Then him quoting the movie constantly weeks later and laughing and still does to this day. This movie is priceless.
Omg I took my in laws to see Jackass 4..... Omg omg omg biggest mistake of my life. I don't know what the hell I was thinking.... The very First scene.... If you know you know
@@rinhyugaa6565 haha ugh that’s so unfortunate though. That’s how mine was the a little bit after and I would just laugh about it when he’d bring it up and how dumb it was.
@@MarcusAurelius12 lmao 😂 omg nooooooo!!! I could never imagine taking parents, none the less in laws if I had them to see it. I did take my mom (wholesome, Christian woman who never even swears) when I was 16 to see Step Brothers. My face turned pale as a ghost when he pulled out his ya know and put them on the drum kit. I looked over at her thinking I was about to be hauled out of the theater. Instead, she was laughing so hard she was in tears!! Never had I seen my mom like that until then.
@amygenevalee6393 so my mother in law loves weed gummies, and my father in law loves flower. So I don't know who's idea it was to go to see this movie stoned, but it made it all that more hilarious. My mother in law ate 2 gummies and my father in law and I smoked before we went and saw it. My wife drove. Being stoned made it all the better. If you haven't seen Jackass 4, you gotta. The first scene where he pretends his PP is Godzilla made for 1 of the most awkward, funniest moments in my life. Look over at them laughing. My wife looked at me and said. Why the hell did you think this was a good idea? I soon began to realize it wasn't, and I was never going to hear the end of this. However, certain scenes had me laughing so hard I was crying in the theaters
The opening scene was very relatable for me. I lived in a very small town (graduating class of about 70 students). The elementary school, junior high and the high school were on the same grounds, so there would definitely be juniors and seniors on the bus with kids.
It always surprises me when people react to this and act really confused to see Napoleon on the bus with all the younger kids, there are a lot of schools in really small towns where there is only one school for kindergarten to 12th grade
Yeah, there’s plenty of K-12 schools in bigger cities too so it’s not too rare Edit: I guess there’s probably more teenagers with cars + public busses/trains for K-12 schools in bigger cities, so maybe not a lot of older kids riding school busses there 🤷♂️
In our tiny town, there are schools for the the different grade levels but they all get picked up by the same busses. So the bus drivers here essentially have crazy long bus routes for all those kids haha.
Yah and also the different schools on the same grounds, which is the case here, but my older one is about to go to a school that’s 3-18yo and it’s in a “big” city
The MOST insane thing is that if it weren’t for smart phones, there are parts of rural america where this movie could take place now, just like when it came out people thought it might as well have been set in 1984…
The switchup from being confused/annoyed at Napoleon’s tot pocket to condoning violence over the tot smushing was amazing😂 Also, the Trisha sketch reveal is one of the funniest moments ever put to screen😂😂😂
When Deb give the "yes" to Pedro, she gives Napoleon a sly smile. She's letting know that other guys are interested in her, and she is interested in them, so he better do something.
To me this movie is much more enjoyable than many straightforward cringe/awkward comedies because it's so clearly infused with a ton of heart and warmth. I just love the stilted (in a good way) mood of the whole town and it's inhabitants. Kip steals every scene he's in, and there are a bunch of amazing side characters. Uncle Rico is hilarious - and his shirts are mint. Bona fide classic film for me. I think if you were among the "popular kids" back in the day you might not get this film, it's very much for the underdogs. I love it.
The Napoleon Dynamite dance is extremely popular. There are many videos of people doing this for talent shows, school assemblies etc. I still see an occasional Vote for Pedro T-shirt.
I was in 5th grade when this came out and we had a class president election. One of the candidates wore a Vote for Pedro shirt and did the dance. Of course he won
Thanks for the follow up on that I was wondering. And was wondering what you said LOL. Such a great movie. But it was just tonight while recovering from chemotherapy, I was watching some interviews with the stars of the film and learned a lot more about the creation of this film. But with what I know now it has moved up into my top five movies ever. Did you know the actor who played Pedro his manager brought to him two different movies to audition for this one in the movie The Alamo (I think it was) (please excuse me I'm really tired I had a long day if I got that incorrect) anyhow, the actor only got the parts that he would be dealing with for the audition really he didn't get the whole script to read so he was kind of confused as to what this project was all about exactly. An he said he went and ran the line and, they stopped him and said, read it a little slower. 🤔 Um, okay so he read it a little slower. They stopped him again, I said no no a little slower, , , 🤔. Perfect. He left that audition thinking okay well I think that's probably the end of that. Shortly after he got a call from his management to come in about the auditions. Turns out, he got picked for both movies. But filming for both movies was going to be starting at the same time. Therefore he would only be able to choose one film. The actors always been close with his father and brought the situation to his father for his opinion of the situation. Especially being that he still didn't really know exactly what all Napoleon Dynamite was about. And as for the other movie, it was a big budget film and he would be working alongside a couple of major stars. But it's Father's advice was to "follow your heart" 🤔 which was the exact advice that was given to Pedro by his best friend in the script. So we decided to take Napoleon Dynamite over the big budget film. He went in to tell his manager of his movie decision and collect the full script. His manager handed him the full script for Napoleon Dynamite, along with returning the actors headshots. Because is management team was no longer going to manage him anymore. They weren't interested in managing an actor who makes decisions like that. To turn down a big budget major star type of film over an independent with unknown actors. Sometimes things turn out differently than people expect. Congratulations to everybody involved with the creation of Napoleon Dynamite. PS you got to watch the added part that's at the end of the finishing credits. There is a little bit of extra added magic at the end. Because if you haven't gone back and seen (I saw this video review of your release a year ago, you may already have heard and went back 🤔 to view it but if not) do yourself a favor, because you will like it. 👈😉👍 This is such a movie of friendship and growth in a small town during awkward times in life.
This movie came out when I was in the 7th grade. I need everyone to know that it inspired by best friend to stuff her pockets with tater tots at lunch. Later that day we went to art class and the teacher made us all turn out our pockets because someone had been stealing art supplies. My best friend had to pull out the crushed tater tots in front of the whole class 😂. She never did it again 🤣
This is my favorite movie of all time! this film had such a low budget they had to save as much money as possible. Thats why you get that goofy intro with food and drawings, sometimes simple is better than fancy and expensive... this film proves that 100%
The hold this movie had on people, including me and my family was ridiculous! This played on Nickelodeon a couple of times. And still a banger after all this time.
This movie actually started out as a class project. Most of the cast are Mormons, it wasn't uncommon to run into Napoleon at a Mormon party in Salt Lake City after the movie's release.
In small towns the same bus that picks up elementary school kids also picks up high schoolers. They usually drop off high schoolers first in the morning and pick them up last at the end of the day.
Deb left her tackle boxes with Napoleon cuz Kip hollered "your mom goes to college." From inside the house. Guess she was insulted. 😂😂😂one of my favorite lines
This film brings back so much fond memories when I first saw this in 6th grade. I’m 22 years old now and I still feel the same way whenever I see this film. Truly a classic. The talent show, and the school dance, and the very last scene with “The Promise” playing. God I love Napoleon Dynamite.
Living in a small town (still around 2k people today) I rode the school bus and it was like this. And the feel of a small town, this movie nails it for me. I also pulled people behind me on my bike. Sometimes we were pulled behind cars if we all had roller blades. A weird mix of music, time, the net just barely a thing, arcades, crazy farmers. I worked those kinds of farm jobs. Getting paid in change sucks after a day of hard work but that was just the way of it. lol...fun times. I got to watch this with my ma one more time in 2021 before she passed and we still laughed. Thank you for sharing.
Dude Napoleon is legendary. 😂 I feel like this movie made a difference in my school and generation. I graduated high school in 2013. That’s a bit of time from this movie, but somehow everyone watched this in middle school and knew this movie. There’s always cliques and standout assholes, but most everyone were pretty cool, or at lease left people alone.
In rural areas, there are often budget issues for transportation, so the same bus would take elementary, jr high and high school kids. This is because there are not enough students to justify more than the one bus.
That song at the intro reminds me of my dog that died😪 he was my best friend for 2 whole years i took care of him from the time he fit in my palm to when he passed away
This reminds me of my mom watching this. She kept asking what was wrong with everyone. 😂 Grandma does play a heavy smoker on Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
This is actually the second Napoleon Dynamite movie. The main actor and his friends made the same movie (with a few different details) for a film class, and the town of the movie is his home town with many locals playing themselves or characters in the movie.
Uncle Rico (the steak eating guy) is in real life, a Vegitarian. In each scene you never seem him swallow, and when the camera was off, he would have to spit the meat out. Good stuff man. Your outro was on point!
I worked at the movie theaters when this came out, and it was the most random, non story, thing that came out back then, and people loved it! I used to go watch it on my breaks 😅
They don't put bleach in milk on purpose, but sometimes they wash the tanks or tubes with bleach, and so it can happen that it's not rinsed properly. Two little fun facts, when Uncle Rico throws the steak, that was the director Jared Hess who threw it off screen. Pedros actor had to scurry away on the bike because he started laughing. Also in the scene where Napoleon throws an orange and hits Ricos van, that was also the director, and Ricos actor had no clue it was coming. That makes his reaction even more funny 😂
The opening credit scene was created by Aaron Ruell (Kip) and some of those are Jon Heder's (Napoleon) hands placing the items on screen. The others are a producer and a hand model because someone at Searchlight said Jon had too many hangnails. It was shot in a basement
i saw this movie with my friends at the theater so many times when i was in middle school, it started out being at the small indy theater only but was such a suprising hit they moved it into full release at the main theaters
This is one of those rare instances of a movie that you can just quote to me and I'll laugh so hard just thinking of the scene. That's how you know it's written and made so well. The only other comedy that has the safe effect on me is The Other Guys, but still doesn't make me laugh as much when quoted as Napoleon Dynamite does
Big up Diedrich Bader who plays Rex Kwon Do He's so different in real life, and excellent in Veep... a proper character actor ps Lovin the clean shave Devin, suits you matey
I live out in rural Colorado and the school class size is about 20 people. So it’s very common for kindergartners through high schoolers to be on the same bus.
in the DVD commentary they mention that the actor playing uncle Rico hates steak and he keeps eating it in the movie but, he never swallows, he just keeps chewing..
Cult Classic! I had to watch this thing 6 times before i could get thru it but once i did, i see why it became a hit.. All the stores and flea markets were selling vote for Pedro shirts. Both Napoleon and Pedro have twin brothers.

If you grew up in a rural culture in the pre-internet era, this movie hits close to home. It's based on a bunch of the director's family stories.
It really hit close to home for me. There were very limited choices and access to information was difficult.
The opening scene was very relatable for me. I lived in a very small town (graduating class of about 70 students). The elementary school, junior high and the high school were on the same grounds, so there would definitely be juniors and seniors on the bus with kids.
I live in rural Virginia, and was in high school when this came out, and it was like a documentary of my school 😂
This movie was probably based on the 90's when the Internet was just starting.
Grew up just like this movie in a small town in southern Indiana for the first 9 years of my life. I thought Walmart was like a mall💀
In a world full of Summers, find yourself a Deb. 👍

"He gonna be a cop" has got to be the most accurate and funny thing I have heard in a long time lol
My favorite little moment of this movie is how Kip gets on the bus without looking back. It was the look of a man who found his destiny.
The celebration of innocence is so refreshing in a sea of other darkly-themed movies (which I also enjoy). This movie leaves you, simply, happy.
Its like a punch in the face to realize that this film is almost 20 years old now.

I wonder if this is why safeway brand milk has a sour taste to it ? I refuse to buy the store brand
@@Bornagain7202 Interesting. It very well could be. Normal milk is never supposed to be sour. The only exception is buttermilk.
The intro was reshot so it cost just a little bit more. also don't diss kip he's a playa

He's so different in real life, and excellent in Veep... a proper character actor
ps Lovin the clean shave Devin, suits you matey
My guy this movie is so overlooked! I'm happy you enjoyed it!
I live out in rural Colorado and the school class size is about 20 people. So it’s very common for kindergartners through high schoolers to be on the same bus.
We need to find Devin a "Vote for Pedro" Muscle Shirt.. 😂😂
He looks good in that suit from the 70’s??
This is practically a documentary if you grew up rural.
in the DVD commentary they mention that the actor playing uncle Rico hates steak and he keeps eating it in the movie but, he never swallows, he just keeps chewing..
Pedro a real one
“What the hell they doing??” 😂😂
1997 intro looks “old as hell”? It was just the other day!
Ikr it not that old! And it’s 2004 I think
Cult Classic! I had to watch this thing 6 times before i could get thru it but once i did, i see why it became a hit.. All the stores and flea markets were selling vote for Pedro shirts. Both Napoleon and Pedro have twin brothers.
"A fartin' unicorn, huh...?" I love it hahahaha
Set and filmed in the director's hometown of Preston Idaho
Love it! the reaction to the tots was hilarious 🤣
My guy looking good with the shave
Appreciate it fam!
