Just recently finished binge watching the first 91 steps and though it is a trivial little thing I REALLY want to thank you guys for your audio leveling. Not only do I not need to crank the volume in order to hear what's happening but I don't have to lower the volume every time the music is on nor raise it back up once the dialog begins. I really wish every channel paid attention to that. Thanks for that and all the other work it takes to make such a great show.
A couple of thoughts: 1) I would always let the first few minutes of rain go down the drain to wash away dust, dirt and salt from the deck. The tanks would stay cleaner. 2) I would plumb in an overflow so that once the tanks are full the remainder will go overboard and not in to the bilge. Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant idea. I don't know too many boats where the rain scuppers are connected to plumbing through the hulls. Lots of cockpits drain that way but your solution is great! And super easy. YOu wait for the dirt to rinse through a little and flip the valve to fill! So slick!
Good job Dan. This system is SO basic (and quite widely used) I have no idea why there are so many people on here who don't seem to grasp it??? As long as you don't try using it while actually sailing along, and that you let the boat wash down for 10mins to let all the encrusted salt wash off it will work fine, just like it does for everyone else. No need for second valves (!?!?!?!?!) and filters etc etc. Keep doing what you are doing - keep being supremely practical and thinking outside the box.
Being excited about getting a dinghy motor is great. You guys remind me of when I was young and not having everything and being excited when you get a little comfort for your boat to make your life easier. Again, love your videos
Great video! Fantastically edited, really well made and nice to see another step on your adventure! Impressed how dan makes it all look so easy installing all this stuff - much have been a bit of a pain!
"Can i ask you a question? Do you smoke?" that was so gorgeous. :)) I could feel the Reggae coming out of this old guy. I hope you guys will never stop sailing, maybe when you are 60 you might wanna change to a Cat for easier sailing and to have space to store all the stuff you collected during your journeys. awesome videos. curiosity, creativity and no matter which problem, you always stay calm and find solutions. Oh and before i forget, always great explaining. So i wish you all the luck you need to stay on this journey and never reach the end.
Awesome water catchment guys. that must feel so awesome solar power . electric motoring . solar cooking . you guys are so inspiring. and now you are catching water without an expensive water maker. nothing more refreshing than ice cold rain water with just a hint of lime in it.
I had family guests over for Father’s Day weekend and had to pause my binge watching of your fabulous series. I missed you so much!! I am also psyched that you are in the area of my ancestry now and can’t wait to catch up with you in Norway!!
You two are great hosts on your travels... I had no idea I would see all the acrobatic performances.... wow.... both of you are very entertaining. I'm a USVI and BVI sailor... and I'm feeling a great loss.... and I pray for my friends and fellow sailors in that area. Keep on with your sailing life together... you're a beautiful couple... Fair Winds and Following Seas... Capt'n Rick... retired living in Jackson, MS, USA...
Well I'm up to step 92 I absolutely adore you guys you're very innovative and very caring I can't lie I have skipped around a little bit and watch some of your newer episodes but applauds to you and keep doing what you're doing you're awe-inspiring and by the way great videos I enjoy watching them very much
I did very similar system on my Person 424 and cruised the Bahamas for 8 summers lasting 6 t0 8 weeks and only had to get water once in 8 years. A 30 minute shower would fill our tanks , we carried 160 gallons but had 5 persons on board. Each took showers every day but shipboard ( rinse down. soap up, rinse off) using. I would suggest using second valve to keep salt water out your tanks also a charcoal filter. Love your channel.
Wow! Kiki is a great acrobat! You guys are so great together! I’m jealous, but at 75+ I can’t figure why! I think because you are smart, industrious, good thinkers, and just great together. And I’m too old to get waterlogged! Lol, lol! Oh well, I’m gonna follow you two and live vicariously thru your adventures. Keep up the great vlogs, you two make great ones. Fair Winds, smooth sailing, much fun, great love!
, glad you're having fun on your silk once again looks like a great way to have fun and stay in shape you look great up there and super excited to hear you're getting a motor for your dinghy unbelievable so happy for you Little sandy beach with the umbrella how perfect is that and yay for drinking water looks like an awesome place in the Caribbeans have fun guys
I loooooved this place (as I loved petit tabac, Mayreau and Tobago Cays!) It remembers me soooo much souvenirs ! I was pretty young, with my parents cruising on a sailboat, and all people we met on this island kept asking me "Are you married ? Do you smoke gandja ?". It was so funny to me! Thanks for sharing your cool experience at see guys. Makes me realise how much I really want to sail again this part of the world.
Be sure to note the diameters of each pipe at the connections and stock a set of reducers/converters--juuuuustttt in case. The Grenadines are beautiful. Hope you got to visit Bequia. An entire episode on its own. Especially the Turtle preserve, the model Boat Builders and the Beach Pizza and Bar!
OMG, you guys went to my Island. ST. VINCET AMD THE GRENADINES 🇻🇨🇻🇨🇻🇨. Woop woop....... Glad you enjoyed it. Was anticipating this trip. Hope you and Dan enjoyed the local beer (Hairoun) it has won a few gold medals worldwide, and when I'm in St. Vincent on vacation that's my beer of choice lol. Was hoping you went to the anchorage at salt whistle bay at Mayreau ya'll would have loved it there it's also in the Tobago keys. Glad you Loved it there.
Hey Sailing Uma, I have been watching your videos for a while and I just want to say that I live in Bequia and I'm so glad that you have discovered it. You are one of many that inspire me to make RUclips Videos.
Congratulations on the DIY water system!! Your boat work on Uma is where it a began and enjoy watching you continue making her meet your needs! Happy Kika found her scarf tree! And WHAT did you say, a dinghy motor?!?! 😀😀 Thanks for sharing! #LoveSailingUma
My dear young lady not only are you very beautiful you are extremely talented that was a beautiful display you did with those silks.... Thanks for another awesome video and well done on your plumbing there young man you too are talented when it comes to fixing things... You kids are so wonderfully blessed.... BBE... 😀🤗😌👍🐬
Great idea for easy rain water collection, but I agree comments from others: the chances of getting salt water into your fresh water tank is very, very high. At the minimum you should install a shut off valve in the fresh water line right after the Y. Fresh water has to be positively protected. The lack of shut-off valve makes it a passive protection. Good luck!
i like the way he put the Y valve with the fresh water flow UP not down or sideways. if they let the rain rinse off the salt water from the boat then throw the valve that will work. But maybe Dan will decide to put in deck fills for both water tanks. Then after a couple of minutes of rain all that is needed is to take the caps off the fresh water fills caps
Such a great idea! way to go you two! That is so amazing that it filled up so fast. You guys are the best! So happy to follow you guys and i hope we can meet up next winter if you are still in the Caribbean.
Great video guys. I liked your project for collecting the fresh rain water. I think you have to observe the tank while the rainwater is filling in otherwise the water will come out of the tank as your first trial. I am also looking forward to see your new dinghy motor. You definitely needed that. It looks like a small engine like mine.
I have a beach sand collection with the location of the beaches on every bag. One of my favorites is the pink sand from Eleuthera, Bahamas. Kika, I loved your silk dancing.
Lol I'm pretty sure if you would've answered yes to the question "do either of you smoke?" You would've been stoned rowing back to you boat 😂 Keep up the amazing tour of the adventure of a lifetime my friends ❤️
Are you sure you are not allowing salt water into the fresh water system? Even if the valve in the cockpit locker is open, when you heel and there is a lot of seawater on deck you might get salt water into the pipes, and the tanks. If I understand correctly, besides the first drain pipe you don't have anywhere to drain the catching system (but the tanks themselves). I would also recommend to separate one water tank for emergency (fill it only after you made sure the catching system is clean) . Great videos, especially love the DIY ones!
First time you have heavy following seas you are going to have salt water forced up and into the fresh water tanks. You really do need a valve on the feeder line
Excellent video guys. Years ago I worked at a chemical factory where we made pvc resin. A very interesting but dangerous process because of the flamability of the raw material, vinyl chloride.

Add some vinegar to your tank, in small amounts...should take care of it but a quick cheap filter will stop 95 percent
About the fresh water valve and pipes. How do you prevent salt water to flow in the wrong direction? Even when the valve is open to just let it go again, when heeling over, isn't there the risk of an overload of salt water taking both directions? And besides this question: I love your videos! Started following you since the Netherlands and still catching up with your past seasons.
Excellent piping! I got it that of course, your not drinking collected water. But I wonder how wide is that portal to Dinghy Dock? Can it swallow a dinghy about 170 cm/5'6"?

Hope you allow deck flushing before closing the valve to dump water to the holding tank. You don't want saltwater in the freshwater tank. You might want to keep the tanks apart also.

You think I'd be used to it by now, but it never ceases to amaze me how resourceful you two are.
I've been hoping to see you fly again, Kika. Thank you, it's on my bucket list -- that and sailing! ❤️
Dan is sooo handy....his contribution is so amazing to this partnership and keeping things always functional

Absolutely agree. Not only saltwater but other contaminates will find it's way into the main tank and could potentionally make it dangerous to drink
Might be better to fill up a seperate tank with it and use it for gray water ...

There's a good reason tanks are separated, no problems with the ability to have them self level at your choosing.
Why don't they just cap it? Uncap it when it rains?

One tip bib of advice would be to ensure one things.
