in terms of why i would want to use a dslr as webcam - it would allow me to set up a beautifully lit environment with a nice lens to speak to people. you can imagine for some people doing interviews and etc, it makes the people looking at you feel like you are an exceptional choice for whatever it is. it is just an extra thing
Thank you Joe. I have significant lag between the Nikon Z5 as a webcam and using an external mic. It seems the only way around it is to use a lesser mic plugged into the Z5, and then take both aud and vid to the computer via HDMI. Is there a better way?
Interesting Vid. I have the Nikon Z5 with Nikon Web Utility, often using OBS and have always been complimented on its output. At an HD rate of 720 it performs perfectly.
Helpful! This works great with Zoom, although there seems to be a startup lag where it just shows the Webcam Utility spash screen for about 30 seconds - incorrect USB cable maybe? But I can't get this to work with Google Meet, unless I'm doing something wrong. Also, what's causing the in/out zooming or focus breathing in the latter half of the video? Which camera & lens combo are you running? I've never seen this before.
I did not experience any start up delay in my tests. I'm not sure what would cause that, but try a reboot and see if that clears the issue. It fixed an early problem I was having after install. . The focus breathing is from the Insta360 web cam - it has an AI feature that follows you. I really need to shut it off.
Thank you for this information. I had high hopes for the Nikon Webcam Utility and kept wondering why it's crap - because it is. The HDMI route is totally best.
I followed your instructions using a Z30 and a EV capture card for 4K to use the Z30 as a Zoom meeting webcam. The power is delivered from a USB power cube vai the USB-C cable, but the battery keeps dying, and the shutter closes, disabling the Z30's use. What is the workaround? Are there other Z30 setting so I don't have to keep recharging the battery?
Weird, I'm testing out the webcam utility and webcam testing tool. When in photo mode on the Z6 I get about 16fps, but in video I get 22fps. Some sites claims 30fps, but I doubt it by the look of it. Not great, but not as bad as I had thought, albeit I'm using a USB-hub to a PC's USB-C connection.
Does NOT work on a Mac. The Nikon Webcam Utility stopped working with the previous and latest version of Mac OS. This has long been a problem. Nikon has been slow to update this utility to make it workable again. Very frustrating since I'd been using previously used it without issues.
Im having the hardest time getting this setup. Running all the latest software for Zoom (v5.17.11), Mac OS (v14.3.1), and Nikon Z9 Firmware (v5.0). I'v e downloaded the Nikon Web Utility, and plugged in to my computer via USB-C cable, but Nikon Web Utility will just not show up in Zoom dropdown menu.
thank you for this specialty video - this feature imo is what will make the camera 'worth it' as a daily tool

That's interesting - I haven't encountered that.
@@ShutterSpeak Really? OK, might be the UA Apollo audio interface I'm using, I will a different one.

@@ShutterSpeak I recently got a video capture device and power adapter for my Z 5. Now I am waiting for a chance to make a video call with it 😊
