Interestingly enough, although history portrayed her as evil/spoiled she was quite the contrary. The Austrian royal family at the time of empress Maria Theresa was, for it's time, very philanthropic that meant that Marie Antoinettes upbringing involved a lot of charity and caring for the poor, hence it being unlikely she every said "Let them eat cake". Marie Antoinette also tried to push the king to reform and make him force the nobility and clergy to pay tax so that some of the weight could be lifted of the poor. It is true that she liked extravegance, but in many ways she was also trying her best to be a good queen and even tried to make the court a little more informal. She has just been prone to a lot of bad publicity and a good example of the "Whenever it is going bad blame the foreigner" mentality.t.
I think this movie does a good job of portraying her, not in a good light, but in a realistic one. You see her world as you suppose she saw it, with her biggest concerns being matters of fidelity and producing an heir and very little of the real problems in France seeping through the cracks. I think it's clever that you're not shown a true depiction of how bad the situation in the country really is until the mob is literally breaking down the door.
I know everything put into this movie is not entirely nor historically correct and it wasn't meant to be. Coppola made this movie based on a writer's book on the portrayal of Marie Antoinette living this extravagant life behind the walls where poverty was at the time very serious. They even decided to put scenes that were only "rumored" to have happened in the papers that she supposedly did or say like "let them eat cake". I love Coppola's eye and work in films ever since and I've owned and watched all special features of production from this movie which made it even more insightful. Anyone watching this for the first time, appreciate the artistry and cinematography. Unless this was a documentary (which it isn't) than you may scrutinize the depiction of the characters portrayed. The last days of Marie Antoinette and her family is even more tragic.
in the film, they purposely state that the saying 'let them eat cake' was a rumour. They have her saying that then immediately cut to a scene of Marie saying "that's ridiculous I would never say that."
If you're thinking or referring to movies in general like Hollywood you won't find any. They are overly dramatized for entertainment. But friendly google can probably help you check some historically accurate documentary films of Marie Antoinette =)
Ben Chavez have you acquainted yourself with the story of the Russian Revolution? Much the same-Tsar Nicholas was a rather incompetent ruler, but he and the entire Romanov family suffered great tragedy.
Phenomenal film. Those who complained about the artistic license would have made an instructional biopic. What Coppola fashioned was pure brilliance. The movie’s final image is haunting and the way it captures Marie’s insular world leaves zero doubt about why the Revolution had to happen.
What artistic license? The only relevant artistic licenses present in the movie are scenography and costumes things (like the scene in the Opera Garnier that wasn't built yet in late 18th century and the "Converse scene", which is a deliberately wanted anachronism, as well as the choice of the soundtrack). The writing, including all the characters and events is very faithful to the real history, and the same goes for the rest of the visuals and aesthetics. Never understood why people complain about historical faithfulness of this movie. There are hundreds of movies much more unhistorical than this one (i.e. "Gladiator", "Braveheart"...)
Those who benefited from the slaughter of the French nobility and the so-called new order were no paupers. Fortunately, the revolution eats its children and they died just like Marie. I just don't understand why they let Mary's poor little son die so cruelly and let him die for so long. If he had been guillotined along with his mother, it would have been much more merciful. And also, of course, the fault is on the side of Maria Theresa - the grandmother. If she wanted to, she would save her grandson with her army of spies and trained assassins.
Yeah not really sure why it is a thing where period film actors/actresses put on post English accents despite them not being set in England. But I suppose we are so used to it now that it would sound off? As far as I'm aware this film is based off a book, and is not supposed to be a biography so to speak, so perhaps the accents fit?

I agree! This film is like a Song that sounds weird and confusing at first but then you can't get it out of your head - and in the end you love it for life.
Kirsten Dunst is perfect for the role she has that youthful look to her but she is what I envison as Marie Antoinette also if you've read the Royal Diaries Series: Marie Antoinette the movie falls right in line with that story. I also love the fashion shown in this movie and it depicts the times very well.
This cast, this soundtrack, those costumeeees and locations, jesus christ, this random 2000s teenage feeling... this Sofia Coppola Masterpiece, oh deaaaar
Every scene and sequence radiate animated paintings of hypnotically gorgeous pastel luminosity, easily one of the most hauntingly beautiful color films ever made, mesmerizing rainbowesque photography that along with curse of the golden flower and apocalypto both also released during 2006, were not even nominated for academy awards for best cinematography that any single one of them deserved to win, unforgivably ridiculous upon multiple levels cinematic travesties, although pans labyrinth also from 2006 was the equally worthy award winner.
Kirsten carry the movie so well I watch it couple of times....! Incredible how the costumes, storyline and location were depicted in the film..I wish the movie was slight longer as they can show Marie's involvement in creating the landscape of palace etc as it is well documented facts as well. I mean, when you can involve rumors, you can integrate the factual occurrences in the plot as well.... I suppose. Still, a great movie!
It's better written than Twilight or fifty shades of Grey and more interesting than both as well (who got sequels) same with Transformers. There you go. Also, Sofia Coppola is really good at showing depression and Marie-Antoinette after the events of this film are more than adequate. I mean, just the arrest, the death of the princess de Lamballe (one of the most tragic and horrible deaths in human history), the trial, the accusation of rape against her son are enough to make it work. Let alone her husband's death and hers. A film like that would be more relevant (especially in the U.S AND in France these days than anything that is coming out. Besides, Kirsten and Sofia just made the beguiled so they can still work together.
My sister bought this movie at the thrift store...so we watched it. One of my favorite movies. I don't even remember it coming out..but it is a very good movie.
One of my favorite movies. And Kirsten Dunst is NOT my type. Yet she is so lovely, I sometimes catch my breath when I look at her. She's magical, especially in this delicious movie!
This is one of those rare impressionistic movies ever made. To create imagery, palette, cinematography, movement and minimal dialogue that Sofia did was nothing short of genius and brilliant. Not to mention the accompanying music is tasteful.
I love the cinematography and soundtrack. Bought both years ago. The only downfall was how slow the film was and how it ended. I felt the point was to show how lavish her life was.
I loved this movie so much everything that comes with it. Poor them they weren't aware how much France was actually starving. This deserved all awards. Hands down to the actors. Well acted and I feel like this is the most budgeted historical movie.
The plot of the film is based in the magnificent novel “Marie Antoinette: The last Journey” by the English writer Antonia Fraser. The movie is quite good and the performance by Dunst is formidable. But if you read the Fraser ‘s novel , you will have a better knowledge about this tragic Queen. She was to much defamed and right know if you visit at Paris, France, the Concergerie Museum where she was imprisoned , a film is shown, where Marie Antoinette is claimed innocent.
What was happening to the proletariat of the era was 'tragic'. Not what a spoiled rich white princess stuffing herself with cakes, engaging in affairs, and living life large, was going through. But trust an English woman called 'Antonia' to feel a natural affinity for a spoiled rich girl...
GregOrCreg Sorry, you blame Marie Antoinette, you should blame Versalles starting with Louis XIV and Louis XV. who created a court that it was a snake 🐍 pit. Marie Antoinette was defamed from the very beginnings by the Versalles ‘ court before she arrived from Austria. Austrian and French people by that time, hated between them. Try to study a little more about this subject . Shame of you.
Maybe making a movie based on a French book, more accurate, more neutral, would have made a much better movie. Instead we got "The adventure of Barbie at Versailles" Also She is innocent, innocent of what. We found the letters she wrote to her family in Austria begging the to crush the revolution and put them back in they full power. Maybe you get confused between innocence and treason.
One underrated movie. I love how Marie Antoinette is depicted as calmer and not bratty as people think. This movie has her best moments with Louis XVI too, while other media just portrays her as Fersen's lover.
What a great job Sofia Coppola did directing this. There’s almost no scripted dialogue or story, but the movie works, and the soundtrack makes it accessible.
Who in their right minds would give an entire country, and a poor and starved country at that, to a couple of 19-year-olds who didn't know what they were doing? In some respective ways, the people who decided on the match and no Regency were to blame. And who decided to give her an American accent?!
Interesting to watch Dunst play a young, flamboyant and rather naive, albeit charming, figure like M Antoinette and compare this to her current role, some 20 years after, as a middle-aged and world weary war photo journalist in the current film Civil War. Suddenly it seems as though her career as an actress has taken on a clear arc, and everything she's done can be viewed with sharper distinction and clarity. I think Ms. Dunst has now entered what will probably be the most interesting part of her career. I'm really pleased for her because she is damn good.
It is really well made, but quite provocative to present such movie in France. It was quite insulting, Marie Antoinette tried all in her power to crush the revolution.

It is my favourite movie and it will always be! I've seen it over 10 times and it never gets boring! Love it so much!!
“She looks like a child.”
No dip lady! She was 14!!!
15*
Mom please No!! That was actually louis
You can’t compare today’s societal norms to the 1700s-
Like girl
Christian Grey doing it since his past life.
This film made me love Marie Antoinette
MHRSandwich X She starved most of France.
Diana Day
She used all the money on selfish and dumb things
Ira Laurila France was already in debt due to wars
She was a horrible queen.
Heather Martinez she was a modern queen I love her
This is the kind of movie you have to watch more than once to appreciate. I didn't like it the first time I saw it but now it's one of my favorite movies.
1:39 Christian Grey what are you doing here?
Itsmekurama doing wht he does best..i.suppose..
Doing a job? Lol it was before he was well-known, so he likely needed income...
This was jamie dornan’s first movie btw he was in modeling but being celebrity active is 2003-present
@El Rincón de Alelangel disgusting
Vampire, the truth is out
And Kirsten Dunst - so beautiful in this film - I remember a MA scholar saying she had the perfect coloring to portray the young Austrian queen
is beautiful 😮❤️
I still love that Sofia Coppola used the modern music in the old setting. I love New Order's "Ceremony"...
Still one of my favorite movies. Hands down my favorite movie soundtrack.
I wish Kirsten Dunst did more movies when she was in her Bring It On days, she's something special
Clueless, Marie Antoinette (2006) and Pride & Prejudice (2005) have been the literal mood board of my life since I was 9
I LOVED this film when it came out, the clothes, aesthetic was amazing, still is!
Beautiful but so inaccurate.
I’ve watched this movie at least 1000 times, my fave ever made. Inspires me on sooooo many levels.
I like the part with the baby 🐑.
.😂
A Masterpiece ::: Brilliant cast and an unforgettable Soundtrack.
I suppose. Still, a great movie!
do they include the part where she loses her head?
no
They should make a sequel.. The prison years and downfall.
is it good enough to even merit a sequel?
Besides, Kirsten and Sofia just made the beguiled so they can still work together.
oh thank god
"this isn't too much, isn't it?" "uhh.. no"
I am here just to see Kirsten Dunst, our childhood crush.........!!!
She worked with many good directors, most notably Sam Raimi.....!!
My sister bought this movie at the thrift store...so we watched it. One of my favorite movies. I don't even remember it coming out..but it is a very good movie.
Best soundtrack ever compiled... what a rush of memories ❤️👑🙌🏻
The heart dropped and cracked when she bowed to all those protestant, then i started crying when their angry cheers died down 😭
New Order's "Ceremony" perfectly fits this movie!
One of the greatest Soundtracks
I love this movie so much! The soundtrack is amazing.
One of my favorite movies. And Kirsten Dunst is NOT my type. Yet she is so lovely, I sometimes catch my breath when I look at her. She's magical, especially in this delicious movie!
This movie was really good!
I like how they make Louis shorter than her even tho he was actually like 6'5
*Jesus Christ-*
This is my comfort movie 🩷
Such an underrated film
This is one of those rare impressionistic movies ever made. To create imagery, palette, cinematography, movement and minimal dialogue that Sofia did was nothing short of genius and brilliant. Not to mention the accompanying music is tasteful.
I love the cinematography and soundtrack. Bought both years ago. The only downfall was how slow the film was and how it ended. I felt the point was to show how lavish her life was.
And it was. It's definitely not a movie about her life or the revolution
No. That wasn't the point. The point is in the last five minutes.
People protested outside Versailles in hunger and starvation ,this woman literally told them to eat cake
I think it's a very interesting movie, beautifully filmed, good soundtrack, gorgeous wardrobe. Like it very much.
Even though it's not historically accurate, I must say I really love this movie.
Marie Antoinette (upon arrival in Paris): Whassup my homies?
no but ok..
I personally LOVE this type of mix: period drama+ teen flick
I just went over the French Revolution in my AP European History class and I am so ready to watch this movie again in a completely new light 😂
You must have been shocked.
Happy 15th anniversary, Marie Antoinette! Released 05/24/2006!
I loved this movie so much everything that comes with it. Poor them they weren't aware how much France was actually starving. This deserved all awards. Hands down to the actors. Well acted and I feel like this is the most budgeted historical movie.
You should not get your historical facts about French history from an Hollywood movie.
There could not be a better actress for playing Marie Antoinette than amazing impressive actress Kirsten Dunst
Sofia should make a sequel about her life in prison. Kirsten is the right age too.
"Queen of Debt"
That amazing
Madame deficit
for some reason i thought this movie would be bad, but it was actually pretty good
Really? It is well made... Coppola is talented and rich, and there is daddy not far. Maybe she should avoid doing movies about history.
This is the best comment section, love this movie 💖
I mean, its not her fault. Versailles has already that extravagant lifestyle before she was a part of it. And she's just 15.
Love this movie. Lots of fiction mixed in, but it was such a fancy, cute movie. Thank you Sofia Coppola.
After reading Stefan Zweig's Biography about Marie Antoinette, I must say the film is not that fictional. I found it quite accurate all in all.
This trailer makes the movie seem like a comedy when it's supposed to be a historical drama.
I watched this movie yesterday and it was so feminine and aesthetically pleasing for my eyes and soul 🤩❤
god imagine if this had been directed by Wes Anderson..
alè WOW - Owen Wilson
ale oh my god it would be out of this world
Or David Fincher...
What about Spielberg
@Milo O' Rourke lol like that movie was actually good
The plot of the film is based in the magnificent novel “Marie Antoinette: The last Journey” by the English writer Antonia Fraser.
Instead we got "The adventure of Barbie at Versailles"
Also She is innocent, innocent of what. We found the letters she wrote to her family in Austria begging the to crush the revolution and put them back in they full power. Maybe you get confused between innocence and treason.
1:39 Jamie Dornan
1:43 Tom Hardy
0:50 Rose Byrne
One underrated movie. I love how Marie Antoinette is depicted as calmer and not bratty as people think. This movie has her best moments with Louis XVI too, while other media just portrays her as Fersen's lover.
What a great job Sofia Coppola did directing this. There’s almost no scripted dialogue or story, but the movie works, and the soundtrack makes it accessible.
I loved the film so much I came back to this trailer to comment on it :)
The soundtrack to this movie always boggled my mind...
1:40 Jamie Dornan ❤ The only reason I'm here and gonna watch this movie!
One of Kirsten's best movies
I think it was actually 14 when she married him. He was 15
he was 16
OLAV WILHELM no 😔
Still can’t believe this film got booed at Cannes. It’s a beautifully filmed movie with many layers
It is really well made, but quite provocative to present such movie in France. It was quite insulting, Marie Antoinette tried all in her power to crush the revolution.
i came here after the beautiful fan made video of this movie, using Lana del rey’s “Fine china” song ❤️😭
One of the best movies trailer ever
I was waiting for the part where she got beheaded-
this movie changed my life.
How so?
"let them eat cake she said just like Marie Antoinette.."
New Order's Ceremony and Kirsten Dunst... too beautiful...
a lot of what she was blamed for wasn't even her fault. "let them eat cake" was never something she said.
I would say who’s watching in 2019 but really I’m here cause 23 & me told me I’m a descendent of Marie Antoinette
