  • Typically not the first model that comes to mind when it comes to Porsche’s motorsport lineage, but the 924 proved to be a serious competitor in multiple classes once engineers were tasked with massaging Porsche’s first front-engined, water-cooled offering to be ready for competition. The 924 homologation examples were particularly exciting, although often overlooked.
When it came time for Porsche to plan its racing program for the 1981 season, it was faced with an unusual dilemma. The 936 was outdated and deemed obsolete, and the 911 based 935 was still being raced extensively by privateers, especially in IMSA. The 924 became the motorsports division’s next project, and with little delay, the Carrera GT was homologated to compete in F.I.A. Group 4 competition. The Carrera GTS was produced as an evolution model of the 924 Carrera GT within Group 4 regulations and intended strictly for competition. The FIA only required 50 new examples, and according to historian and racer Jurgen Barth, Porsche stopped production at 59 GTS examples with a price tag of $55,900 in 1981- nearly double the price of the earlier 924 Carrera GTs.
The GTS Clubsport was the ultimate evolution of the 924 GTSs. The trimmed every bit of excess weight that could be found through the use of plastic door windows with sliding panels, thinner and lighter front windshield, and a molded clear Plexiglas rear hatch. A functional air intake duct on the hood was incorporated into the fiberglass hood, and conventional latches gave way to racing hold-down pins. The suspension was upgraded from torsion bars and steel shocks to Bilstein coil-overs at all four corners, the stock steel rear semi-trailing arms replaced with cast light-alloy, and the ventilated and cross-drilled disc brakes came from the 930 Turbo parts bin. The uprated GTR five-speed transaxle with a 40 percent limited-slip was cooled with an additional radiator. Inside, the interior features a Matter-fabricated alloy roll cage, 935 racing seats with full harnesses, and a suede-wrapped steering wheel. Finally, the bore was increased slightly to 2,093 cc and a larger intercooler helped to produce 280 horsepower. It was capable of 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and reached a top speed of 160mph, making it the fastest production car that Porsche had ever built at the time.
In this video, Tim Kuhn delves into the history and evolution of the 924 into the venerable 924 GTS Clubsport.

The GTS Clubsport was in fact Porsches fastest car in 1981. And probably to this day the most extensively developed car in regards to differences between the basecar and the modified version. In fact very little is the same between the very rare Carrera GT and the uber rare GTS, and then this Clubsport! Dreams car indeed👌

But the 2 models I dream about are the Carrera GT and a white 968 CS! Thanks again for going to the effort

My pop had the sister car that ran the 81 LeMans I think the vin# was 924007. He had acquired the Spirit of Australia a 924gtr built for the Australian team in 81 or 82. The Aussies were not happy with the cars performance, so Porsche got the car and then they had decided to strip the engine and suspension and transaxle from the GTR that was the back up car for the Hugo Boss 924 that Rohl drove in 81 LeMans. Pop had a friend inform him about the original chassis that the mechanical components of the Australian car he had being at an acquaintances shop, and it was just sitting there going to waste. So pop contacted the guy and bought the chassis. I had the privilege of assisting pop with the restoration of reuniting the original chassis and the engine and other components that were stripped and assembled on the Aussies car. And it was completed to be presented in Monterrey in 1997 I believe. The event was highlighting Porsche that year in honor of Dr. Ferdinand's 100th birthday. The car was a hit and even got the door autographed by Rohl, who said the car looked just like it would have when he drove the car in 81. I know the engine was an experimental engine that was limited production. It was 2.0 liter and was fuel injection and turbocharged. The maximum hp was around 600. It had a torque shaft to a rear transaxle, which helped the performance with the weight distribution. The suspension had titanium parts. It was an impressive car once finished and it was loud when it started.

Röhrl drove a 944 (LM) with 2.5 engine and approx 410HP, there were 1 or 2 924 GTR's with 375 HP ( 1 driven by Schurthy, the other one by Almerasd and brother).....

    What a nice presentation 🤗
    Great footage and professional presentation.
Unfortunately there is a few facts presented which is not correct.
The total amount if GTS's produced is 49 + 1 prototype.
Production VIN number 1 to 10 was omitted. The line-up picture shows 49+1 cars.
The matter of VIN numbers and production numbers is a little confusing because the VIN numbers ends on 59 and many people therefore think it was made 59 cars. Unfortunately this misunderstanding is repeated over and over on internet like a pandemic virus of misinformation until people think it's the truth🙄
Later in the 90's one GTS was construct from spares and parts by a factory employee (I think) and assigned production VIN number 1.
This whole story can be confirmed by reading the Porsche Book of Juergen Barth and later book by John Smith.
I also heard this story personally from mr Barth many years ago.
The second misunderstanding is that the GTS is a derivative from the GT and just an upgrade of brakes and plastic lightweight parts.
Its actually very little which is the same parts on those cars, but they share the same basic chassis and some electrical and interior components. The GTS is in fact a very different car than the GT.
The doors are made of thin glassfibre on GTS ClubSport as well as the bonnet and front fenders front spoiler and rear bumper. The side windows and rear hatch window is Lexan.
The ClubSport rollcage is a special alloy aluminum and approved by FIA for Group B homologation.
All in all it's a fantastic car which not many people are aware about the story and existence.
