Love that you’ve come back to the non-meter version. I understand, when you use cameras as much as you do, the little things matter more and finding the perfect fit is hard. Hope this one works out!!! If you don’t mind regular chrome, the m4 is more attainable. I bought mine )”(gently used one from 1969) 2 years ago on eBay for $1000, from the original owner. The deals are out there. I looked for a couple months and tried other sources first (KEH, UPP), but was disappointed in their evaluation of their condition. I got the old M3 advance lever for $100 and put it on myself (very easy), and then got it completely CLA’d locally for $900 (only because the shutter speeds and frame counter needed to be adjusted). Not a bad deal, and if I ever need to sell it, I can probably get out what I put into it.
Thanks Andy yes. Great that you found that deal and that you fitted your own advance lever from a M3. Good job! Enjoy it and yes the small details matter when you look at them every day.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComI couldn’t have known what to look for without all of your guidance! Finding your channel has been wonderful! I’ve learned so much about photography from your videos and I know you’ve demystified and introduced so many people around the world to the wonderfully historic world of Leica cameras! As a old school designer/photographer, I knew about them, and wanted to know more, but never knew where to start! Love your approachable, down-to-earth style! You instantly made me feel at ease! You’re truly amazing. Keep up the great work, Matt!!! ❤️📷
I just bought a Leica M5 and it’s a perfect set up…far better than the M6 or M-A. I wished I had ignored all the negative comments and bought one years ago.
Awesome! Yes sometimes you just need to ignore everyone and buy what you want. I’ve never said bad about the M5 as I’ve not used one I just don’t like the shape as much. They all do the same job!
congrats to treating yourself & your soon to be 40k, great content and benefit to the community. the M-A is such a nice camera. It's my all day/everyday camera with a 35 for street, and a Barnack for secondary lenses in my pocket (wides or 5cm elmar)
Congratulations! I have an M-A, too, and I think it is one of the most beautiful Leica cameras ever. I do wish that the M-A had a self-timer - like the M3. I'm wondering why you don't spend your money on Leica M lenses. I've seen another well-known RUclipsr polishing one of his black-paint M bodies with a slightly abrasive cloth to make it look, what, more "brassy," more vintage? I'm always a little suspicious of a brassy Leica M.
Eeek, yes I avoid black paint as I want the black to last longer. I own quite a few Leica lenses but I’m just as happy with other brands. See next video actually! (Already made out in a few days).
Sorry if it sounds like that. I do go through a lot of gear to review but this in my first film camera since January if I remember (excl. MP that went back)
I am telling you Matt, get M7 & your search for a perfect camera will be over. The amount of photos you salvage just from having the auto shutter is breath of fresh air in Leica World.
Thanks Jimmy, I’m not a snap happy street guy that needs to grab shots, I shoot models so it’s all pre-planned and controlled. For others yes the M7 could be perfect especially if you shoot the same style with digital.
Love my MP. I had the MA first but did not appreciate that its body was basically a M6 or MP with its battery compartment filled in like a pot hole repair then covered with leather. 🙃🤗
Ahh Matt : your coming round to my terrible Twins ...... Leica MA , and my beloved Leica M3 Buddha ear ( factory ) Single Stroke. Nothing touches my M3 SS ... it is matchless .
Hey Matt, Congratulations on this often overlooked beauty! I bought a silver chrome one because I felt the script born the top was preferable over the lovely black colour, sadly Leica doesn’t make a black with the script like on their MP’s Thanks for another entertaining video and all the very best, Ron
Hey Matt✌ I assume that you will reach your 40k and I am sure of it👌 I think you have your community worldwide and you definitely deserve it. @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom You have already gained enough experience with the other models and so you have already made your own judgement as to which is the best for you in particular.
Hello Matt. I think I have interesting topic for you to discus. I wanted badly to try those f:0.95 50mm lenses and V. Noktons especially 75mm 1.5 - on high resolution negatives. But I do not have experience with viewfinder cameras - how inaccurate and inconvenient is focusing when using such lenses ( shallow depth of field and long focal length ) ? How many photos get wasted on film when shooting this way? This is much less important when using digital Leica camera. I would like to know if I will waste 30-40% or 10%. All the best !
It depends how you shoot and the lens. The 7515 will give you 100% at 1.5 if your subject stays still. 0.95 gives softer look so on film I often stop down fast lenses by 1 stop.
Thanks for the Review and also showing the camera so closely and in-depth. Just to get it right: The ISO dial on the M-A is basically only for show? The ISO dial on any other current Leica film M is electronically wired somehow?
I do watch your videos all the time, this time I`'m a bit confused about the quite dominant watches lying around....not quite the level like the Leica brand cameras. Whats behind this?
Thanks, yes I go through phases. Dad loved collecting affordable watches (cheaper than shown) and when he passed this year I inherited his hobby. I've recently had a lot of my desk as I use them to do macro shots and I think they can look nice next to cameras (maybe not so many*). In terms of level I use Leicas as I like how they feel not because they are expensive. Seiko watches offer a lot for the money and I like the designs so I enjoy quite a few of those. Seiko and Leica are both functional and I'm practical not flashy so both suit me. (That said I'm finding I prefer watches with pretty movements so I've just ordered a 1919 pocket watch for something as beautiful as a £5-10K watch movement but twice the size and a fraction of the cost).
Ha we have to convince ourselves that we made the right purchase. I have nothing to sell in this video as I'm not linked to Leica. (eBook and presets are optional but were not mentioned) :)
You should also get a copy of the m70. The 70 years of m cameras book its the anniversary this year 🎉 , surprised you haven’t mentioned it already , worth a book review when u pick it up a copy .. got mine from the Leica store at Harrods.. 🎉🎉
Very informative yet again. Really don’t want to bug you, but wouldn’t a M4 be a very fitting number to commemorate the 40k milestone? 😅 JK, happy for your purchase and looking forward to seeing what you will do to/with it style wise.
Thanks, yes I own the CL. Love the size but terrible accuracy for fast glass due to the low EBL rating. I know the M5 but skipped it as I prefer the classic M design. (M5 were a great bargain some years back).
I was tempted by a black anodized MA recently, very elegant indeed. But I'd just picked up a beautiful 1962 M3 still in the case with a 1956 collapsible Summicron for just over a grand so I figure I will learn to shoot with that first as I have no idea whatsoever about shooting film with a Leica. How does one manage with fast lenses ISO 400 and a maximum shutter speed of 1000 of a second?
I am totally concerned! What possibly does any one need these new cameras? if one already has a Leica-M or two! The black paint used by Leica must be water based in it's permanence! My Nikon-F3 (press camera),Canon Ae1, Spotmatic all are in great shap! The F3 has many dents! Oh! My favorite M is still myM3!
The M7 is nice but I like as manual and mechanical as possible so returned the MP (with meter) and skip over the M7. The M7 is great for those that like to shoot in A mode.
Matt, hello to you from Bryansk, Russia. The watering can will never surpass Contax 2 Kiev 2. This is the best system camera of the 20th century from Zeiss Ikon. Oscar Barnack was a genius, but the guys from Zeiss made a masterpiece for all time. And Bertelle is an optical genius who contributed to the further development of world optics. Choosing between Leica and Contax for every day, I proudly hang Contax Kiev around my neck and Leica stay in my pocket like Rollei 35
I am with you… been shooting Contax IIa since 1971 (my father bought it new in 1952). I have Barnack Leica, beautiful camera, but still prefer the Opton lens on my Contax lla. Matter of personal choice, I shot the M-3 for several years and only regret that I sold it.
Hey welcome! I hope you saw my Kiev 4 and Contax II videos? I love Soviet stuff too. I even did a video on a remake of a Bertele lens vs classics from the same period. I love the Sonnar 50mm f2 and f1.5 on your cameras.
Thanks Brian, yes I love the Opton Sonnar but I adapt to my M3 for the best of both as Leica M cameras are much smoother to operate than most Kiev/ Contax in 2024.
As has wisely been said, man is not so much a rational being as a rationalizing being. My guess would be that you next will rationalize your way to getting your new MA dressed up in black paint. (Definitely liking the new glossy black paint 11 . . . though not the M11 itself).
I love taking photos of cameras haha.. and models of course but people want reviews so I do these too. (I do enjoy the assessment of cameras strangely, my ex audit job coming through).
Thanks yes sorry for the confusion. I juggle a lot of cameras here, film and digital. (Yes I'm the same, I just like experimenting as someone that studied science).
There‘s only 2 cameras to buy in the leica M range. A leica M4 pre canada or a Leica M6ttl. Why? Right, I‘m not saying they are the best, best means what, right, everything different to another person. No. But what, then? First of all, there are old production and new production cameras, pre-, and post- move to Leica Canada. No, forget digital, that‘s snapshot stuff, information management, call it what you want, business or so, fashion, hype, luxury, regardless, your choice. All things good in life are analog, and the same way you don‘t chop your senses up into a burger-mess of chemistry to be repeated in target products with chemistry replication, the same was you don‘t make distilled water of wine, wine of benzol, good biological food out of a replicator. Back to it: the M3 is the source, but not the freedom camera to choose, freedom of what? Right, freedom to stick to the 50mm, go up or down a blend or two, in the sweet-sport of the camera, you can do all sorts of things, but we know all the sweetsport is between 35 and 75, both for visual perspectives and for the M, no wonder it was created for that, centered around the 50. Not more tech, but rather less technology to fiddle with is a driver to choose an M, so M5 and M7 are out, even though a functioning model is a joy. But the others are, too. We‘re left with the M2,M4, M6 or derivates, means there‘s the M2 with it‘s cheap outer shot-counter and the old shutter and winding mechanics. We‘re left with the M4 and M6s (does not included the MP, as it maintains some aspects of the old for fashion reason). Now there are 2 type of people, philosophers, more serious or whatever you want to call them, and there are the ones that didn‘t give up on the camera to somehow in all this help them with a few minor, but relevant (to them) features. That‘s the M6ttl, no, not an M6 or any other variant of it, but solely the M6ttl with the big exposure time wheel turning into the directions the embedded lightmeter points, as does the blend selection work, both in synchronous direction. Not so the M4, you want to be quirky, raw, bare naked, grown up, cool, whatever nonsense to a comfort seeking consumer, the M4 is it, and yes, quirky with the time-wheel reverse as before and on the MP, and a self-timer, but constructed in the old ways, and fast to wind, rewind, no distraction, shoot. You go out in the night for some aurora, use the self-timer. No, it‘s not a selfy-timer, nobody uses it like that, get a voigtländer for this or a kodak or a nikon. You want to go into the new production school and spend more to get a brandnew camera with warranty that won‘t help you if Leica has it‘s snob-day again (they have them often and reject servicing their cameras for reasons or just make it more expensive than Rolex), then the M-A in silver, yes silver is the most beautiful Leica Camera ever since the Barnack Leica, clean, no battery compartment no design blocks stuck on each other as the M3, no strange cheap counter wheel on top. Oh wait, they messed it up, it needs the angled fast-filmwinder and the shutter-winder with the -not plastic, but titan grip on it, not that M3/M2 thing. And so, the only real camera left is a 1967 M4 in silver, to me. No fashion, no cheaper material, a straight tool. My photographic freedom machine, just compact excellence. I tried them (all?), I start hating the digital M, I have 2 and worked with 3, M, M10, M11, I have tried MP, M-A, and own M6ttl, M6classic, M4-67, tried M3 and M2, own barnack, rolleiflex, and gazillian of other cameras. They all go (gone already in my mind) aside from the IIIFblack, M4-67silver, M11black (what? Yes, sometimes you need convenience, but I wonder, for how long). I will be trading in for another M4-67. The new (to me) Leica culture since 2015 is not to my taste, and maybe isn‘t new at all, I had the longest fun with my first, the M6ttl, the most frustration having rebuild my M240 twice (crap quality control in Wetzlar; is it better on the M11? I hear not.). If you want a robust camera, don‘t ever think about any new Leica, any, regardless of the feel (that‘s designed, not for practicality, but for brand feel). Get a Barnack, maybe a M3/M2/M4early, or a DSLR Nikon Pro F (D3, D700, D800, D850) or some other similar that I can‘t say anything about, not having had the experience of a 2K% trust in a friend doing the on ground journalist thing in Sudan and other places with it. ErgoSum: Buy a M4 pre Canada, or a M6ttl and 1 or 2 favorite lenses. I suggest pre-asph summilux 50 (deals with sharpness and blur, no need for noctilux or summicrons). If you want the latest sharp lens, buy a digital camera, i.e. M10-P with your favorite scron-apo-asph-superduper near range thingy, or a Q3. Oh, please, leave me alone with film-scanning, get a digital camera please and learn shooting and filtering and AI and what not. Nobody will ever distinguish that on a
Never an M6, plastic bits next to the strap lugs and that Zinc top plate that goes Fugly when it oxidizes. The M4 is a good choice as it’s all brass to last. As for Made in Canada, I wouldn’t lay doubt on all those Mandler designs and some of those very rare late model M4’s Made in Canada. There are a few rare Barnacks too and an M3 that came out of Midland.
Dude your channel is getting boring now! Still promoting overly expensive items and then proclaiming they are the best is soo 2009 - 2020 times have moved forward now, while the MA is a great camera it's just a 35mm camera, we live in a time where money is tight and tensions are high, let's keep this as a bit more grounded it was not so long ago you bought A M11 and said the same thing.
@nathanf1934 hahaha 😆 now that's funny but I guess with your Rolex logo is only suggestive of what really matters most to you. And no I can afford a Leica or 2 ;)
Because you have classical GAS and can’t resist to buying Leica gear of different sorts 😉 and before or after buying you will always find different arguments - why you need this or that gear. But fairly speaking you works not changing mich after new gear acquisition, nope. But of course you may obtain some sort of motivation to shoot more by this new gear 🤔🫶

Thanks! Yes the ISO dial is not functional on the M-A, only as a film reminder. (Unlike the MP/M6 where it links to the light meter).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Interesting, the door where the ISO dial is doesn't look like there is any connection going to the camera. Cool.

So does it have the same supposed plastic parts as the Mp …one of the reasons you sent back the MP I do believe…
Under the "hood" perhaps but overall I much prefer the M-A
M3 > MA If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Plus the viewfinder is better as well as the internals.
I love both the MA and the M3. Obviously early days for the MA but the M3 doesn't suit all jobs.
Very informative yet again. Really don’t want to bug you, but wouldn’t a M4 be a very fitting number to commemorate the 40k milestone? 😅 JK, happy for your purchase and looking forward to seeing what you will do to/with it style wise.
Thanks! Ha yes I guess M4 and 40K makes sense :) Yes more news soon
Happy with my bessa 3ra not going down the leica. Rabbit hole 😂
I started with the R3a! Yes try not to look at Leica!
Congrats
Thank you!
Ack, if only I hadn't just had to buy a new furnace... . Sometimes I don't like adulting!
Haha, yes I'm still a big kid. I should be trying to buy a house not buying cameras!
Try an M5, and later a CL to complete your Leica experience.
ND filter
Nice video but is it that cold in house that you have to wear gloves. Maybe sell a lens and put the heather on 😂😅🎉
Haha I was told to wear gloves as it stops me putting finger prints on stuff :)
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom They are your own cameras and how are you handling them when you use them 🤣
I am totally concerned!
Thanks Jason! It’s my job so I enjoy testing. I have my Nikons tool I still need to make a video on 1 off them.
Why no love for the M7 in all your comparisons??
The M7 is nice but I like as manual and mechanical as possible so returned the MP (with meter) and skip over the M7. The M7 is great for those that like to shoot in A mode.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom It’s a great camera and gets slighted almost as much as the M5! 💀
The M2 does most of what an M-A does.
Yes the M2 is lovely too. I do use flash sometimes as you know so the hotshoe is handy and a black M-A is a lot cheaper than a black M2. :)
i knew it !! lol
Haha it was only a matter of time!
i guess you get MA is for doing youtube, and sooner and later , you will return MA as well.
Nice idea but sadly I bought it overseas on eBay so I can't return it. I could sell it.
Answering the question, is it even possible to own enough cameras?
We only need one camera but as a review channel I have a lot
I guess I could look to get the M-A repainted but the MP BP would be easier for that!
do you like taking photos?.... Il thing
in fact you prefer playing with the
toys called leica M....
I love taking photos of cameras haha.. and models of course but people want reviews so I do these too. (I do enjoy the assessment of cameras strangely, my ex audit job coming through).
Leopard print leatherette in 5, 4, 3 …
Nice idea.. we shall see :D
Good choice!
why not consider the leica M4-P?
Because it was made in canada?
No I have 2 of them already (see one in the video). Like to try different ones to make videos / blogs
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Ok sorry for my misunderstanding.
Do you plan to compare the M-A to the M4-P in a future video?
G.A.S.
Ha yes sorry the usual!
I'm getting lost as to what you are buying and selling. You know is the person behind the camera that takes the image, irrespective of the camera
Thanks yes sorry for the confusion. I juggle a lot of cameras here, film and digital. (Yes I'm the same, I just like experimenting as someone that studied science).
You seems to be suffering from some GAS
Always, the joys of a review channel! I learn and then I want them.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComI did follow you’re advice and bought a Bessa R with a scopar 35 mm, it’s a great camera!
Why not treat yourself.
Thanks Mark!
ErgoSum:
Buy a M4 pre Canada, or a M6ttl and 1 or 2 favorite lenses.
Still promoting overly expensive items and then proclaiming they are the best is soo 2009 - 2020 times have moved forward now, while the MA is a great camera it's just a 35mm camera, we live in a time where money is tight and tensions are high, let's keep this as a bit more grounded it was not so long ago you bought A M11 and said the same thing.
haha don't get cranky cause you can't afford modern Leica's.
@nathanf1934 hahaha 😆 now that's funny but I guess with your Rolex logo is only suggestive of what really matters most to you. And no I can afford a Leica or 2 ;)
Weird comment
Thoughtless and indulgent ramble. He didnt even buy an M11. Strange to suggest you know how to better run this channel.
@lighturpl3 I never said how to run a channel, just mearly making a point, which I feel I made very clear :)
Thanks, yes I enjoy testing new gear but yes I can make the same photo with my old one, 100%
