  • In this vlog we make the long journey from Horton on the K and A, to Pewsey. We have a lovely cruise and take in the stunning scenery, but then it all goes wrong when we meet the angriest boaters we've ever encountered. They don't like wide beams and they made sure we knew it. (Footage at the end of the vlog!)

    My partner and I have been on the canals for 40yrs between us and the mood has changed so much in that time and not for the better. CRT are now trying to make money as a charity & they have overlooked the basic needs of the average boater, they have improved the towpaths to let cyclists wizz down at a terrific rate & left the vegetation for the wildlife (ignoring the need to moor up). There are far more folks living on boats now who are not true ‘boat people’, in the past we helped each other out and were a community, now there is a new breed of anti-social behaviour which is spoiling it for those who genuinely care for the waterways. It’s a sad reflection on how society has become

He has no right to abuse people, if you had rammed his boat , then maybe. But looking at the footage I can't see you doing anything wrong. Him following you is intimidation. This was before phone cameras. I'm convinced if they had cameras they would have recorded me and posted me on the internet with abusive language, a completely fictitious account if what happened and everyone who watched would have assumed I was the horrible person and they did the right thing to immediately shame me forever on the internet. In my experience the problem children are bitter old boys living in marinas with bling boats and limited experience doing daft maneuvers to preserve their paintwork and over-stayers with life problems... over-entitlement has several forms. Widebeams aren't a problem so long as they navigate with caution... so well done you.

      We think the type of boat isn't the issue, it's the person on it. We've found that this kind of behaviour is getting worse, especially since lockdown ended. Luckily, it's still rare at the moment. We find most hire boaters are lovely and we can forgive them more because they are newbies. It's the ones that know the rules and ignore them that are a problem. Ignorance is easily solved by education. There is no cure for arrogance.

    I have just left The K and A, in fact We followed you back up the Caen Hill flight. We had a similar encounter with the live aboards you feature on your video coming into Honey street. A boat in front of us made a late decision to moor and despite already being in Tickover I put my boat in to reverse. The additional noise made some stick their head out of the side hatch and start shouting about slowing down, despite the fact that I was going backwards from tickover. Anyway an exchange followed with the persons partner joining in who was not even on the boat. Very similar pattern, very disturbing equally wrong. I witnessed several boats get shouted at. It is in my opinion the 'Shoutiest Canal ' Oddly the one thing the canal was not built for was to be moored against. It is designed with shallow sides for movement. I personally think there should be a license barring ASBO. You shout at boats you get your license revoked!

    For a minute I thought it was going to be the B&B guests I once had (or didn't have, as it happened). They were an older narrowboat couple who booked during Easter as a "special treat" to get time off their narrowboat.
    I had a new cylinder and immersion heater, but didn't know how to work the timer properly. They were so aggressive I was shaking a fumbling. In te end, I just took it off the timer so the immersion would be on 24/7, but it wasn't good enough for them... The woman had planned to have a hot bath upon arrival and this had 'completely ruined their holiday', as the water was only tepid and she didn't want to wait... Oh, that and the heating wasn't on when they arrived, so it was risking the man's health, because they would have to wait for the house to heat up. AND there weren't enough lights for him to read or them to see each other during dinner (even though there are lights in every room, plus multiple candles, a chandelier and two candelabras... in a cottage, which is actually unusually bright for a country cottage).
    I was totally gobsmacked when they announced they were going and more so when they were able to bamboozle Airbnb into a refund. I lost the entire weekend earnings and cleaning costs. I usually bend over backwards and baby my guests - no matter how demanding - but that was way too much.
    Put me off of narrow boating until now. Also why I raised my prices, sadly.

    Interesting vid that says quite a lot about today's waterways - and how they are not, in reality a rural idyll.
    We've lived aboard for about 30 years and seen quite a lot of changes - one of which being the appearance of residential wide beams. When we started the only widebeams were the working barges (now sadly gone). The canals, which may have been built for widebeams, had by long custom (both from working days then leisure) been used by narrowboats - so widebeams are in effect a new phenomenon (outside the northern waterways). People weren't used to accommodating boats over 7'.
    To add to this, we've seen the gentrification of the waterways - and the sense of entitlement that goes with it. And this is found on both narrow and broad beams. Too many people feel the need to judge and that their opinion is more valid than others. Broad beams are often a focus of this as they are perceived as being more the preserve of the wealthy.
    And there's also the ongoing issues of why widebeams paid (still pay? - dunno) the same mooring fees as narrowboats - and the fact that in places widebeams are venturing onto waters not designed fir them - such as the N Oxford between Braunston and Hillmorton.
    As with most things - there's right and wrong on both sides. Frustration with widebeams is at times perfectly understandable - but that's still not an excuse for threatening behaviour.

    • @WeirontheMove
      @WeirontheMove  2 года назад

      It's certainly not acceptable on a broad beam canal built for wide boats. On that we agree. We don't pay mooring fees because we CC. In marinas WB boats pay double NB charges, so not sure what mooring fees you refer to. We also pay more for our license but traverse less of the waterways. We have never judged another boater but we have had plenty of judgement heaped on us, and to date every instance has been from a narrowboat owner.

      @@WeirontheMove
      I'd not disagree with any of that. A jerk on a boat is still a jerk - just a floating one. I think my point was to try to show that there's a back story to this which gives it context.
      When we first started the only boats wider than 7' we'd see were the gravellers on the Trent tideway and the tankers on the Aire & Calder. You'd hardly ever see the old wide boats even on those canals built for them, therefore for the generation of boaters post 1960s canals are experienced as being for narrowboats - so the arrival of broadbeams in the 90s has generated tensions that weren't there before.
      Gentrification hasn't helped - and the perception that broad beams are for the wealthy, especially held by (let's be generous) "bohemian" characters like in your vid, feed the resentment. That's not to accept the generalisation, just to recognise it.
      I think one of the things your video does illustrate is how attitudes and motivations on the waterways have shifted over the decades. The canals have always attracted "odd balls" like the nutter you met - and down south you have lots of people whose primary motivation seems to be their Boho lifestyle. An old boatman (and a few current ones on the Chesterfield Canal where we are) would simply have lamped him one and chucked him in - but in today's more genteel waterways, that happens less and less.
      Likewise though - I don't understand why people would choose to live on a widebeam and rule themselves out of about two thirds of the system - including arguably the finest third. Perhaps you can't understand why we'd choose to live in a 60' tube for 30 years?
      Overall I'm saying there's a historical backstory of differences of motivations and opinions - all which contribute to the waterways becoming a more gentrified and less pleasant place than it used to be.
      That's not to seek to justify any threats or anything like that - just to recognise that the canals are like any other rural community and aren't the idyll so many people think.

    Mark & Julie....don't you think on this anymore as these types of people are not worth it. Negative energies is all that they provide and life is certainly to short for that. BTW....the dogs look great and full of positive energies! I always appreciate each and every Vlog you two put out. Thank You So Very Much Mark from Florida.

    The widest boat allowed on any given canal is the widest that can fit through locks on that canal. that was always the guiding principal of it. If anything it is boats moored up that are the problem (yes all boats needs to moor up) since originally the canals were purely for transport, the freight motorway of the day with parking only at wharves and basins for unloading and loading again.
    You guys are more polite than I would have been and seeing as how you were so polite I strongly suggest you forward a complaint of harassment against him. The fact he pursued you along the towpath is proof that it was not a passing comment but was real harassment. He appeared to be too ignorant for his own safety and having such an empty head makes him like an empty can - the type that makes the most noise. Making a report would be good to help others too. Imagine a lone boater or maybe a couple of females or an elderly boater. This shouting could cause deep alarm that could lead to an accident. If this happened at work/in a park/in a shop etc a report would likely be made, so don't hold back.
    As far as I understand it you can film in public and show that footage unless it includes young children.
    Anyway, glad to see you are not letting it get you down. I hope the CRT do some real cutting back work along your favourite canal this winter.

      Your assumption is not quite true - while the limiting factor is canal gauge (width) related to lock width (broad or narrow), the waterway profile is configured to allow 2 narrow boats to pass (in opposite directions or when overtaking). In a situation where a narrow boat approaches an on-coming widebeam boat, their comined beam (width) not only exceeds the width of 2 narrow craft bot also causes one or both boats to scour the profile of the puddle. It is for this reason that wide beam craft were banned from opertating further North than the Jam 'Ole becuase the canal profile and overall width South of the Jam 'Ole was constructed to allow lighter from London Docks to off-load / transfer cargo in this region.

    • @salandjim
      @salandjim 2 года назад

      Further to my last post, I therefore contend that while widebeam boats make for great accommodation, they should not be permitted to cruise on any stretch of the broad canals as their passage cause great damage to the profile as outlined in my last post. The only reason CRT permit them at all is revenue - simples. So, when cruising a widebeam boat you need to accept the fact that you will get abuse - it's no different to encountering a 60' artic and trailer on a country back-road - it simply shouldn't be there ! I know of at least 2 widebeams in my area that were craned-in on the pound between 2 bridges that neither of them can pass through - it's just a pity that the owners paid for them to have engines fitted ....

      @@salandjim Do have a look at the history of the boats that were used along such canals - wide beams. If anything it is the mooring of boats along the canals that is different to what used to be the case. In the days when canal boats were all working boats they were only moored up to load, unload (so quaysides, basins etc) and late evening till first light to grab some sleep, allow the horse to eat and sleep etc. Without the multitude of boats mooring along the banks for up to 14 days at a time there would not be the narrow issues you are building into a claim to displace the boats that were always designed and built for such canals. Those mooring anywhere they please of course includes narrowboats for that matter, in fact since narrowboats are more numberous by far than wide beams they would be the ones clogging up the canals due to mooring anywhere they please. The canals all over the country were mostly built with locks as the limiting factor except a few such as the Huddersfield narrow where there are also a few bits where the cut is as narrow as a lock - though all for quite short distances. The point of the canals was to move as much freight as possible per vessel (so less boats and less crews to have to pay for). It is therefore clear that the canal boat companies would maximise width as well as length for any gven canal - and they did. If they could cope then, why not now? With engines and thrusters boats are much easier to handle than when they were pulled by horses, especially when passing each other so tow ropes had to be passed one over the other and the boat on the offside had to be careful not to get pulled over towards the tow path while the other boat was passing in between. If they could manage then so people can manage now. Your argument about displacement is strange since there is no data suggesting wide beams have a deeper draft than narrow beams.

    I live in the US and this sort of thing happens here, too. It's happened to me personally numerous times. In once instance I was finally assigned a parking permit for the apartments I lived at in crowded DC, but they assigned me the wrong space. I'd come down in the mornings to see an orange sticker and citation. After a week of humiliation and annoyance they got it sorted and I got a proper spot.
    A month later I arrived home from my job in theatre about 1am really tired. Someone was in my spot. Security offered to tow them. Of course I said no, if they are innocent like I was how terrible that would be. He went to get them. I waited half asleep in my car for 30min for them to come down to move. Nice. I parked.
    Awkward we all walked back in general together and to make (now I know ill advised) conversation i noted that the security wanted to tow them and I said no. They immediately assumed I was attacking them and accused me of being just as bad "We saw your car every morning with tow stickers! You can $%#$^$ off! You are one to talk!" I said no, that was a mistake I was given the wrong parking spot "A likely story! You're just mad someone did to you what you did- " I said no, I'm trying to say I didn't want them towed-- but they would not let me speak. The entire way back to the building this couple berated me after I just saved them.
    Something again happened in 2016.
    Ugh. People are just abusive.
