I remember when you were moaning and groaning about how much the blacking would cost a few episodes , so I 'm glad you found a cheaper solution :) A few questions: 1. What is that hole in the side of your boat, the little round one, it appears water would just pour in. @ 20:50 not the thrusters, but up higher. 2. Why wouldn't the underside of the boat also need to be blacked? 3. Wouldn't rollers be much easier to apply a nice thick coat? 4. Fourth question was about painting the anode, but you caught that. Great job guys, glad you had help! Thanks for all the vids as usual!
1. It's vent for the gas locker. 2. Because the underside never sees the light of day so rust is rare because of a lack of oxygen. Plus, we took the advice of our boat surveyor. 3. Brushes for the first coat and then rollers/brushes for the second coat. Glad you enjoyed the vlog/s
Good Afternoon to you both It was good to see you on the river today, the boat looks brilliant All the very best and we will see you again Kevin and Lin ( Treacle Mine)
Thanks for sharing this brilliant vlog and well done for doing a fabulous job of blacking and painting the boat, I hope that you are both doing well, and the pups of course. Take care and all the best. Stevie
We!l done, looks great, we used Joe three times, two blackings and a survey, just can't fault him, such a great bloke, Steve and Sue WB CHOCOLAT, unfortunately moved back to dry land due to health issues
Well I think you hugs did a fantastic job! As I told you in Woolhampton yesterday when i met you we didn’t do our own but may think about doing it ourselves next time! We’re just waiting for the final details for the cratchet and pram cover and then we’re painting the boat again!! Always jobs to be done! Well done guys and it was fabulous to have met you the other day for a chat. Many thanks Candice ❤
Had my survey done t Joe's very helpful great bloke . It was done just before Christmas as it started snowing so I never made it to the survey Paul the previous owner took it in he actually recommended Joe but obviously didn't recommended a surveyor. I grounded my boat on a shelf the Kennet and Avon is renowned for being shallow and I managed to find s shelf to put it on.Still she's at Colthrop cottages at the moment unable to move ue to heart surgery. The CRT have been brilliant hopefully start moving soon
What an absolutely amazing finish. Can’t believe you get that finish from brush painting it on. Absolutely fantastic. Boat looks stunning. Well done u.
Brilliant. Fabulous video. The boat is beautiful. So nice to see Jonathan and Amanda again. Missed their vlogs. Hope they are doing really well. What wonderful friends they are helping you do all that work. Excellent work. James too helping you was so nice. Yes boat will be looking brand new.
Hello. Just wondering...when blacking the bottom of the boat what happens with the supports holding the boat...how do you black under there? Lovely boat. Enjoying your vlogs...only just found you 🙂🙃 xx
Wow your boat looks fantastic, you all worked so hard The end results are amazing it looks brand new again, The boat looks massive out of the water I thought the cost was very good expected it to be much higher Than it was ,much better than what being blacked on the Thames would have cost you. Take care looking forward to your next vlog .
Most enjoyable vlog and nice you enjoyed the experience too. Interesting the explanation of the difference in surface area between widebeam and narrowboat. Shame they don’t charge the licence fee with that same calculation 4ft 🤷♂️😁
We don't black the base plate because it never sees the light of day and rust needs oxygen to corrode metal. There is oxygen in the water, but nothing that seriously damages the metal. Also, the canals are so shallow that the blacking would scrape off in no time at all.
we never do the baseplate. Our surveyor told us it's pointless because rust form when it meets oxygen and the base plate is always under water. Plus, the said it scrapes off on the canals because they are so shallow.
What we found was about 18 inches either side was clean as a whistle due to rubbing on shallow canals, however, the the centre of the base plate was rusty and showed signs of pitting. So I thought adding protection in that area wouldn't go a miss. A bit of information here for anyone whose undecided?
@@davesmith-rs1yo We acted on the advice of our boat surveyor. I suppose there's no harm in doing it if you can and want to. You can't have too much protection.
That was very informative to watch, thank you for recording and sharing - but can I ask a really dumb question...? What about the bottom of the boat? Does this not need blacking too? Thanks!

Well done, your boat looks fantastic. May I ask was it 2 pack or bitumen that you used and also did you black your bow thruster tube. Really enjoyed this video....
Hi what a brilliant job you all did the blue looks lovely and I would like to ask whAt is the RAL number for it as we are having our Aqualine repainted and that blue you have painted is what we are looking for.
You don't black the bottom because canals are so shallow, it scrapes of in weeks. Plus, the base never sees the light of day, so the chances of rusting are minimal.
Well done and thank you so much for the vlog. I'm not sure I would do it myself but she looks great. Bravo👍
Thank you, Jim

great job guys well done

Hello Jonathan and Amanda, is there a reason that boaters don’t black the bottom plate.
Colin.
It's pointless because it never sees the light of day for rust to form and it scrapes off in the shallow canals.
Most enjoyable vlog and nice you enjoyed the experience too. Interesting the explanation of the difference in surface area between widebeam and narrowboat. Shame they don’t charge the licence fee with that same calculation 4ft 🤷♂️😁
W're glad you enjoyed the vlog, Neil. It was so much fun to do
REALLY interesting vlog! Question: Do you also black the bottom of the boat?
We don't black the base plate because it never sees the light of day and rust needs oxygen to corrode metal. There is oxygen in the water, but nothing that seriously damages the metal. Also, the canals are so shallow that the blacking would scrape off in no time at all.
jobs a good'un 👍
For sure, Graham

what was your reply, Richard?
@@WeirontheMove My wife Jenni is convinced that Mark was on the phone to Julie and it was her idea to put £0.50p in the meter !1
How do you feel about doing base plate? We did ours last year at the EA hard caversham. I won't lie, it's was hard work!
we never do the baseplate. Our surveyor told us it's pointless because rust form when it meets oxygen and the base plate is always under water. Plus, the said it scrapes off on the canals because they are so shallow.

Did you inspect your bow thruster tube whilst in the dock ?
We did, David, and we blacked it too
Well done, your boat looks fantastic. May I ask was it 2 pack or bitumen that you used and also did you black your bow thruster tube. Really enjoyed this video....
hi Helen, we used bitumen and we did black the bow thruster tubes
You have room to black the sides and stern but, when and how do you black the bottom because I can't see that there's room for you to get underneath?
I was wondering the same thing.
Answer please.
You don't black the base plate because it never sees the light of day and the canals are so shallow it scrapes off in a few days. It's pointless!
@@WeirontheMove now I understand xx
Well, the things one learns. I always thought the bottom was blacked as well.
Baseplate doesn't need blacking due to the fact rust needs water and oxygen that's why the waterline needs most protection water mets air
Hi what a brilliant job you all did the blue looks lovely and I would like to ask whAt is the RAL number for it as we are having our Aqualine repainted and that blue you have painted is what we are looking for.
