Mama Odie is the fascinating woman of the bayou who lives in a boat in a tree, kisses her snake, falls asleep at random times, and can look into the past through a bathtub filled with gumbo. Her wisdom is deep and her lessons are pure, but I always wanted to understand her more so to do that today I’m going to dive in to attempt to explain throughout this video where she came from. And let me tell you, I think her story is much darker than I had originally ever considered.
I post every Tuesday and Thursday, so check back then for more Disney, Pixar, Harry Potter, Star Wars and movie videos! If you have any questions about the Disney universe that you would want answered in a video, please ask away in the comment section!

    • @grace5033
      @grace5033 5 лет назад +129

True (fun fact, Dr. Facilier was originally intended to be Mama Odie's son, but the writers thought that it would add too much to the plot for the audience to keep track of the important details, so they took that bit out. However, Dr. Facilier does make one reference to his mom, by saying "I'm a royal myself on my mama's side". What if, not only was he the son of Mama Odie, but using that line as a reference to her status as a Voodoo queen? ) If Isaac's theory is true about her being a former slave, I highly doubt an actual queen would be enslaved. So...what if that was actually the case? ...

But, that's basic knowledge to people who practice voodoo, like myself, or anyone that watched the inaccurate version of her in the third season of American Horror Story. I think Mama Odie's past could be even darker than we realize, because of the bottles hanging in her tree. I first saw that concept in 'Because of Winn-Dixie' with Gloria Dump (ironically, also blind) and her "mistake tree", where each bottle represents something she'd done wrong in her life.
I'd love to learn more about this, like if "mistake trees" are (or were) a legit thing down south and if so, what some of Mama Odie's mistakes might've been (this could really tie in with a theory I've seen that Dr Facilier was actually Mama Odie's son).

Actually, bottles are typically hung from trees as a form of protection! Colored glass bottles are used to form a barrier, keeping evil spirits out, while allowing the good to pass. ^^ This is a common practice in the Voodoo religion from what my mom has taught me.

PLEASE DO A VIDEO THEORIZING THAT DR. FACILIER IS MAMA ODIE’S SON!!!
In your last video, you highlighted that the Shadow Man was royalty on his mama’s side...a voodoo queen.
You mentioned how Mama Odie focuses on needs and not harming others. Facilier, in contrast, focuses on wants and harms. But both are powerful.
Also, Mama Odie refers to him as the Shadow Man...but she is familiar with how to dispel the friends on the other side, is familiar with their curse, and how to lift it. Yes, that could be as a result of her knowledge...but what if it is because it is the knowledge she passed to her son: Facilier. And as a result of him using magic for evil, she only knows him as the Shadow Man.

I think that Mama Odie was supposed to be an alternate version of Marie Lavou the Vodoo Queen of New Orleans. And, a specific deity in I believe it was Hatian Vodoo was the inspiration for Dr.Facilier. He's noted as a smooth talker, skull faced, and wears a silk top hat.

I would love to see you do a video on Prince Naveen. His heritage is kept a bit of a mystery but I think I know his kingdom and lineage. I think he is from Scotland and descended from king Kenneth the third (he was the first black king of Scotland)
Here’s my evidence. He has a Scottish accent (given to him by his voice actor from Scotland) he looks like he could very well be part African but he couldn’t be from Africa. There was also a huge influx of Irish and Scottish immigrants during the 1920s to 1930s due to famine (And they couldn’t make him 100% African Because of the Eddy Murphy film coming to America. Potential copyright violation) Naveen would be just close enough to the throne that he’s a prince of notice but far enough away he could marry who he liked. (If you go by the lineage that married a person of African descent close enough to that time to look partially black) Kennith the third was the sire of the clan MacDuff of Shakespeare notoriety in the story Macbeth.
    please please use it 😊

Great job on finding her background as well as going in depth on her religion! I think this movie shows there is always a good and bad to everything he used the loa to ruin other peoples lives and gain power while she used them to help others when they need it. I usually don't comment but as one of the adults who watched this at the movies alone I couldn't resist.

I thought you were going to mentions all the whiskey, liquor and wines she has hanging everywhere bottles as part of her dark past.
Alcohol played a part in slavery, and Mama Odie may be a recovering alcoholic, or at least someone she loved was. She turned a symbol, the bottles,of her and her family's oppression into sources of light and decoration. (She has candles hanging in said bottles and they are also hanging in the tree, catching and reflecting light.)
Just my musings. This video essay is still awesome

When you first mentioned Mamma Odey (forgive spelling I’m on mobile and can’t double check without completely deleting what I wrote so far) being a slave I thought that she was a maroon. A slave that escaped and avoided being recaptured by living in the bios and swamps near New Orleans. I thought maybe she learned and practiced her magic by living in one of the Maroon communities and learned from them. I don’t know a whole lot about them, but I do remember that there were some records of Maroons being able to communicate with animals and even tell Alligators who was friend and who was foe. That last one might of been a stretch though as I read it in a book that was historical fiction and the author might of just added the alligator part to make it more interesting. You’re theory was really good and managed to get me thinking about Mamma Odey in a new way. It’s really cool to picture her as a Voodoo Queen.
