  • The Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) (www.moua.com.au/) is an an amazing underwater art installation located off the coast of Townsville on the outer Great Barrier Reef. As the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, MOUA will act to highlight reef conservation, restoration and education on a global scale.
Amazing curtains of soft corals, cryptic invertebrates and stunning marine life are just some of the highlight of the site. Located beside an exceptional coral reef at John Brewer Reef, it is truly worth the visit.
The entire installation is the creation of world-famous underwater sculptor, Jason deCaires Taylor (www.underwatersculpture.com/) who worked with the local community to create a truly spectacular experience. Once the art is installed underwater, nature begins to take over, colonising available spaces, living amongst the cracks and crevices and using the location as a refuge. Constantly changing and evolving, we realised that many people do not get to experience the MOUA first hand and decided to provide this short tour of the primary sculptures outlining some of the recent development of the changes that have occurred at the site. MOUA offers a contemporary platform to share the stories of the reef, and the culture of its First Nations people, as well as spark a meaningful conversation and solution to reef conservation.
For more information about the surrounding marine life check out our Coral Greenhouse citizen science project (inaturalist.ala.org.au/projec...) on iNaturalist (inaturalist.ala.org.au/) .
