Rye Pier - Octopus Garden

  • I'm back for a little dive under Rye Pier, Port Phillip Bay, Victoria.
Did you know about the octopus garden there? It's an artificial reef, designed especially for octopuses! I counted six - 00:56, 01:29, 01:57, 02:07, 02:22, and 02:34.
So where is it? When you reach the end of the main part of the pier, don't turn right - keep heading north for about 60 metres (follow the 'signposts').
Dived on 1 Nov 2021 - (the first dive after COVID lockdown!) Water temp was a toasty 16 deg C. Depth 4-5 metres under the pier, and 8 metres at the octopus garden. Filmed on a GoPro 8 in 4k, @ 50 fps, using a PolarPro Switchblade for the macro shots. And a little light or two.
Even just staying under the pier itself is pretty good, with lots of colour and little critters.
    Watch in 4K!!
Big thanks to Marcia (she's got the big camera rig!) and the ladies for their company on the dive.

Hi Colin, can you share the directions on how to get to this spot. Last year I followed the steel rods in the sand heading north from the end of the pier. Went what felt like a decent distance but found nothing, then turned around and headed back in. Was I heading the right direction?

Hi Carl. Seems you were heading in the right direction if you followed the steel rods. Compass work is essential, cos the sea grass can be confusing re directions...

What would you say was the nicest place you have been down mp? Blairgowrie rocks jumps is a cool area to dive

Hi Aaron. Nicest place? They're all good! That said, I haven't dive the back beaches yet. I know the Blairgowrie Jumping Rock. It's a 500 metre walk from the carpark - a long walk (and back) with diving gear!) Cheers - Colin
