According to the manual, it should go into filter basket: “Insert the cleaning disc into the FILTER BASKET in the portafilter.” The instructions in this video seem to be wrong. I tried doing the flush without the filter basket and the “cleaning” water was pouring out of the portafilter. @@elijahwoods5108 it very much depends on the beans - the ones I have in at the moment are: 20g dose, grind setting 8. Pre infuse for 7 seconds, and click to stop extraction at 35g in the cup which equates to about 40g when it's finished giving 2:1 ratio.
Just as an FYI, in the last hour I've just changed beans and dialled in again. Same roasters, and same roast level, but these beans seem to want a grind setting of ~11-12 to get a 30 second pull! So, lots of variation there.

What is the number under the word “amount” i am really confused about what that number means. When you first open the Breville pro it says “13 seconds” what’s this mean?
I'm looking into purchasing a Breville because of the many great reviews. However, I am feeling a little hesitant because I've noticed some warning reviews that Breville equipment gives out around 12 to 18 months. Have you heard of these issues?
Mandee O brevilles are appliance level machines that aren't made to last. 12 to 18 months is generous given the quality of these machines. Get a Gaggia Classic Pro or Rancilio Silvia instead
@@rickastley885 People are buying these machines for the features that the Gaggia and Rancilio don't have. Not everyone wants to spend 15-20 minutes every morning to make a coffee, this heats up FAST. I get that the grinder isn't perfect and there are issues with it, but to say they all break after a year isn't true - I have friends with Breville machines going strong after 5-6 years, cause they take care of them and clean them on the right schedule. So instead of pushing someone towards a machine that has little in common with a machine like the BBE or BBP maybe make a suggestion that doesn't end up costing way more (You gonna casually recommend a Niche Zero for a grinder?)
@@brcguy 100%, people say the same about super autos durability. Okay I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've watched about a dozen videos and I cannot get consistent shots....sometimes I get a good one and I program that as a custom shot, but the next day it doesn't pour it the same. Each morning I heat up the group head and portafilter, run a few beans through the grinder to grind out any old retention.... I then single dose my beans with a scale on my preferred grind setting that I thought was a good dial in, using only fresh coffee.. I then use a distribution tool and an auto tamp to be consistent. ..then I'll hit my custom shot which should be timed from my previous dial in session to be nearly perfect (getting a 1:2 ratio in grams of output between 25 and 32 seconds)..but yet it will pull wildly different each time. What the heck I'm trying to do everything the same as much as possible so why do my results vary so much? I feel exasperated and about to give up on this machine.
Are you using a Barista Pro or some other model? By custom shot, are you referring to saving the brew time in the Single or Double button? By wildly different are you saying that the saved brew time is not observed? Or referring to the taste of the shot?
J Y I’m using the barista pro and yes, saving the brew time in the double shot button....the brew time is sometimes widely different even when everything else remains the same and I’m pressing that custom double button. However i recently switched coffees and re did my dial in and this coffee seems to extract more consistently so i may have fixed my issue for the most part. :) any tips are appreciated
Jordan S All I can tell you is that both the single and double shot buttons are volumetric. Even though you program it by time (how many second) it will stop when a certain volume of water is dispensed. You can confirm that buy weighing your shot every time. No matter how many second it took, the final volume of the shot should be the same. And yes, you have to dial in again each time you use different coffee.
Seattle Coffee Gear I appreciate that, however to newbies it is a bit misleading as surely you wouldn’t be doing this straight away without trying grind size first?
No matter how fine I make the grid it only brews up to 15sec. I’ve done everything you did in the video. Went to settings as low at 7 grid size with 13sec and it always stops at 15sec. Yours go all the way up to 25sec. I’m not sure what else to do. Wondering if there is something wrong with the machine. Just got it last week. What else should I do?
Same problem here as "Danuta" my brand new one stopped at 15s. I'm not sure this is a factory brewing time. Do we have to custom the shot and re-program the single/double buttons. Anyone please clarify.. thanks
I hope y’all reply soon. Just bought the barista pro. I understand it gets very precise. But all these numbers get me confused? Is there a way to explain it for dummies lol? Maybe I can call and have it explained to me?? I hope so!
Yo compre una igual hace una semana y ya me gaste 36 oz de granos de coffee . Te recomiendo un distributor /leveler & tamper y un espresso dosing funnel para que haga más fácil y consiente el shot.
I have avoided buying this machine because of the smaller port-a-filter. 17 grams is not nearly like 22 grams! How is the taste difference between this and the larger port-a-filters?
I'm not even sure you'll get a smaller or weaker shot. 54 or 58mm is the diameter, not the depth. Theoretically, the basket that holds the coffee could hold the same amount of coffee as a 58mm portafilter. It's just going to depend on the depth of the basket.
@@crabjoe Theoretically you're right. However, in practice, a 58mm portafilter is bigger in both diameter and depth, so it holds more coffee volume. I saw in another video that a deeper cake is more prone to channeling issues and requires more consistent tamping skills. Since the Barista is targeted at beginner and not pros (despite the PRO in the name) Breville decided to go with a smaller portafilter.
Great video! I have the Breville Barista Express. I don't think I have the silicone insert for the cleaning tablets. Is that necessary on my machine? Thanks again for all your help and expertise.
Hi! I'm getting a really small amount of coffee when grinding at 11 seconds, even on default grind size 15.. I have to crank up my grind time to 18seconds with a grind size of 16 and just getting about 16grams of coffee.. Is there something wrong with my machine? Or every bean is different?
Im having trouble with the volume of shot. I have set the time duration in the menu then set the length of the extraction required but after saving the volume, it sometimes stops extraction too soon or it doesn't stop when required and just goes on and on until you have to manually stop the extraction. Is this due to grind size?
I had the same problem and spoke to Breville. I didn’t realise you had to actually pull a shot to program the shot. I was trying to do it just from the menu. It makes perfect sense now but to me the manual isn’t clear.
@@RumandScotch Holy crap. It's almost $200. That's a quarter of the Barista's price. LOL I don't know how good it is, but is 0.1g that significant in the consistency of a shot? Can anyone taste the difference of 0.1g, assuming all other variables are the same?
@@itsm3th3b33 The dose (how much you weigh in) influences your pressure profile and the extract you get... so if you would like to stay within a certain (taste) range, you can use a 1 g-accuracy. @phosphor8416 That's all theoretic. 1g is like 4 beans. The question was: can anyone taste the difference of 1g dose? Sure, a 0.1g scale would be better, but a cheap scale, even though it displays digits after the decimal point, is just not reliable. Your grind might be too coarse. Set it to finer (lower number). Also, maybe your tamp is on the weak side (apply more pressure).
You can't make drip coffee but you can pull an espresso shot and then add water to make an Americano, which is similar but has a slightly different taste.
My barista pro is only grinding one shot worth even when double is selected, it is also only pulling a shot worth of espresso when I push double, how do I fix this?
btw the "shot selected" has nothing to do with the grind. Thats what the little knob is for. My settings are grind number 4 and 14.5 seconds for a double shot. just turn the knob clockwise to increase duration.
I really want to program my double shot button to 28 seconds, but it cuts out at 26 seconds when I'm trying to program, so I always ends up pulling manual shots. What am I doing wrong?
@@jessywerner6817 it's on the finest setting. I want to know why when I'm in program mode I can't set it beyond a certain limit, but on manual, with the same grind, no issue
I bought this a couple months ago but something was wrong with the protafliter. I would literally have to use all my force to turn it. I sent it back and I only got on cup of coffe out of it. Was mine defective?
Bradly Miller mine is two days old and it was super hard to turn on the first day (like, it wouldn’t turn at all and I kept checking to see that I had inserted it correctly or what it was banging up against). But after a few tries it turned with a lot of force and it’s been getting easier since then. I think it just needs to wear in.
I love how she showed us how to set the grinder AFTER we put coffee beans in it 👌 I had to take the ones that fell through out individually. 20 minutes waisted. But thanks for other tips
Coming from a barista, it just takes TONNES of practice and trial-and-error! Keep trying and adjusting your method, but generally, make sure you have the milk wand 2cm deep in the surface of the milk - too close to the bottom and the milk will be loose, too close to the surface and it'll be super foamy. There's also plenty of videos on here that explain it better. Hope this helps!
I was going to buy this machine as pods are quite expensive and I use 2 at a time but I don't have this kind of time also my Nespresso machine is a lot cheaper. Thanks for saving me a whole heap of money.
This is insane. Literally everything on my machine is incredibly tight. Couldn’t get the burr out without feeling like I’d break the machine. My fiancé can’t get the portafilter head set on the spout at all, it takes nearly all my strength to put it on even with her holding the machine. Even the wheel to adjust the grind size is hard to turn. The water barely flows through on a 10 grind setting with 18 grams of espresso. Tried going to the 12 grind setting and it took 52 seconds to reach 20 grams of espresso. The grind was really not that fine either. Plus it’s extremely loud... very disappointing for a $800 machine.
@@SeattleCoffeeGear I did not, I purchased through Amazon. I’m a newbie when it comes to this equipment but if you say it sounds like I’m having troubles, I’m definitely going to return it and get a new one lol.
Honestly hard to say. If your new it’s not uncommon to have a ton of problems that aren’t at the fault of the equipment, espresso is t easy. I’d follow your gut, if it seems like a hardware issue perhaps return it.
Id say you’re too heavy with the tamp. Applying 15-20 kegs pressure as per the instructions is nuts. Get a palm coffee distributor/tamper. Confirm your coffee dose with scales. The distributor/tamper will set the level the same every time so the only other variable is grind size to get your 30-35 second pour.
Why are some of them so expensive? I just looked at the price of this at $1200 it’s pretty par for the course for a premium product but they also have ones for $4000. That’s the price of a car. It’s for the home kitchen not a coffee bar!

So instead of pushing someone towards a machine that has little in common with a machine like the BBE or BBP maybe make a suggestion that doesn't end up costing way more (You gonna casually recommend a Niche Zero for a grinder?)
brcguy h
@@brcguy 100%, people say the same about super autos durability. My sister has one that's been going strong for I think 8 years now and I often read people saying it lasts for a year until something gives out. Other than exceptional random bad luck, it seems it's really a matter of the user taking care of the cleaning frequency and needs
Jordan S
All I can tell you is that both the single and double shot buttons are volumetric. Even though you program it by time (how many second) it will stop when a certain volume of water is dispensed. You can confirm that buy weighing your shot every time. No matter how many second it took, the final volume of the shot should be the same.
And yes, you have to dial in again each time you use different coffee.
Hey Jordan
You arent alone. Im in the exact same boat.
Been trying for 18g in 30 to 36secs as per the Lifestyle lab video
Can I ask why you adjust the burrs before adjusting the grind size?
We wanted to show you how before everything was covered in coffee.
I can't say for sure but try checking your settings and restore back to factory settings.
Same problem here as "Danuta" my brand new one stopped at 15s. I'm not sure this is a factory brewing time. Do we have to custom the shot and re-program the single/double buttons. Anyone please clarify.. thanks
Do custom shot
00:25 Lady, the reason I'm watching this video is to avoid reading the Manual.
She said she was making a latte toward the end. What size cup was that?
It looks like a not-neutral cup.
@@crabjoe
Theoretically you're right. However, in practice, a 58mm portafilter is bigger in both diameter and depth, so it holds more coffee volume. I saw in another video that a deeper cake is more prone to channeling issues and requires more consistent tamping skills. Since the Barista is targeted at beginner and not pros (despite the PRO in the name) Breville decided to go with a smaller portafilter.
wife bought it, and asked me to set it up ....ahhh!
How’d you do? I’m 20 shots in and still not getting it right.
You need fresh roasted beans for best result. Costco bean doesn't cut it.
I just got this machine and this video was extremely helpful, thank you!
I got one to these videos r so handy
Did you get the hang of it yet? I’m on day 2 and ready to give up.
Ready to give up what do u need a hand with?
Great video! I have the Breville Barista Express. I don't think I have the silicone insert for the cleaning tablets. Is that necessary on my machine? Thanks again for all your help and expertise.
how many ml need to have 1 cup and 2 cup
Hi! I'm getting a really small amount of coffee when grinding at 11 seconds, even on default grind size 15..
I have to crank up my grind time to 18seconds with a grind size of 16 and just getting about 16grams of coffee..
Is there something wrong with my machine? Or every bean is different?
Every bean is different. I think this portafilter prefers 16 to 18g only. Aim for 17
Same issue, 13s get only 7g
I had no idea the filter wasn't for water hardness. Thanks for that.
My Sage Barista Pro starts at 8 seconds and is finished at 15 seconds, for a double shot. Whats wrong with it?
Im having trouble with the volume of shot. I have set the time duration in the menu then set the length of the extraction required but after saving the volume, it sometimes stops extraction too soon or it doesn't stop when required and just goes on and on until you have to manually stop the extraction. Is this due to grind size?
I had the same problem and spoke to Breville. I didn’t realise you had to actually pull a shot to program the shot. I was trying to do it just from the menu. It makes perfect sense now but to me the manual isn’t clear.
I am having trouble with sour taste in coffee
fascinating that some people use scales to make an espresso....
Can you tell me what scale you are using. Thanks.
It looks like the Acaia Pearl. I would recommend to use the silicone mat that comes with it to protect the surface from scratches.
@@RumandScotch
Holy crap. It's almost $200. That's a quarter of the Barista's price. LOL
I don't know how good it is, but is 0.1g that significant in the consistency of a shot? Can anyone taste the difference of 0.1g, assuming all other variables are the same?
@@itsm3th3b33 The dose (how much you weigh in) influences your pressure profile and the extract you get... so if you would like to stay within a certain (taste) range, you can use a 1 g-accuracy. If you wish to optimize further and be more consistent, go for a chap 0.1 g accuracy scale - available from 19 Euro.
@phosphor8416
That's all theoretic.
1g is like 4 beans. The question was: can anyone taste the difference of 1g dose?
Sure, a 0.1g scale would be better, but a cheap scale, even though it displays digits after the decimal point, is just not reliable.
No consistency/repeatability: the same amount of beans will weigh different numbers on different days.
No accuracy: 18g of beans may read 17.0g in the cheap scale. Does it make you feel better if it read 17.1g?
@@itsm3th3b33 Google: How much does a single coffee bean weigh? On average a coffee bean weighs 132.5 milligrams. Which is 0.1325 grams or 0.0046738 ounces.
Please please tell me what I'm doing wrong... I'm doing grind 9 for 12 seconds and it seems to be fine at about 17g. When I try to get a shot it is only running for 13 seconds..... please help, I'm getting through coffee at an alarming rate....
Your grind might be too coarse. Set it to finer (lower number). Also, maybe your tamp is on the weak side (apply more pressure).
You need to set the pour time by entering the Menu.
i just bought the Breville Barista Pro espresso machine. should i adjust my grinder ?
Can you also make normal coffee with this machine? I am very interested please let me know. Thank you
This is espresso only
You can't make drip coffee but you can pull an espresso shot and then add water to make an Americano, which is similar but has a slightly different taste.
My barista pro is only grinding one shot worth even when double is selected, it is also only pulling a shot worth of espresso when I push double, how do I fix this?
reset it to factory default. Someone may have messed with the "custom option" at some point and it changed the double shot duration.
btw the "shot selected" has nothing to do with the grind. Thats what the little knob is for. My settings are grind number 4 and 14.5 seconds for a double shot. just turn the knob clockwise to increase duration.
If you keep reducing the ground it wil be a loose ground, thus the water goes thru too fast.
I really want to program my double shot button to 28 seconds, but it cuts out at 26 seconds when I'm trying to program, so I always ends up pulling manual shots. What am I doing wrong?
Grind finer
@@jessywerner6817 it's on the finest setting. I want to know why when I'm in program mode I can't set it beyond a certain limit, but on manual, with the same grind, no issue
@@catliciousoz did you adjust the burr beneath the hopper?
@@jessywerner6817 yes
@@catliciousoz @alliekraft
I took off the grinder to adjust it and now I can't locked it back..too hard..can anyone help me?
How can I make one decaf and then a regular coffee? Is it just a case of changing the beans and flushing?
Or you have one pre-grounded and put it directly in the portafilter so you don't have to change the beans
Skip 22 min of the vid
Her in-dose was 17g
Her output was at 25s, she used volume to measure the out and doesn’t explain how many grams
The problem is the Barista Pro brews espresso @ 260 degrees and no matter what you do to try and pre warm it it wont work.
than its just about making sure its easier to extract by using a darker roast or grinding finer right?
You didn't clear the steam nozzle with water after frothing the milk.
Can I use a naked portafilter with this machine?
We bough one today still dont know how to use it 🤣🤣
I bought this a couple months ago but something was wrong with the protafliter.
Too much coffee in the filter makes it hard to turn. I reduced the dose on mine and it is much easier and still get an imprint on the top of the puck.
Same here. The trick is first to heat it running a does of water only.
@@iangadget3848
You definitely don’t want an imprint of the screen on top of the puck.
Why are there no videos for a single cup of coffee not double
In the modern day, a standard coffee is a double shot - it's what you get in cafes etc
I love how she showed us how to set the grinder AFTER we put coffee beans in it 👌
I had to take the ones that fell through out individually. 20 minutes waisted. But thanks for other tips
How can I get my milk to look like Allie's?? I always end up with too much foam or not enough and she made it look effortless!
Stick the rod to the bottom of the pitcher and no longer that 30 seconds.
once you have the right amount of foam put the wand slightly deeper to finish warming it up
Coming from a barista, it just takes TONNES of practice and trial-and-error! Keep trying and adjusting your method, but generally, make sure you have the milk wand 2cm deep in the surface of the milk - too close to the bottom and the milk will be loose, too close to the surface and it'll be super foamy. There's also plenty of videos on here that explain it better. Hope this helps!
I just want to make a drink, I am regretting buying this. I mean Jesus can I get a cappuccino!
Yeah that nob on the left side adjusts the grind finer/coarser idk why she took the entire burr off the top, unneccesary
so much for the setup
I was going to buy this machine as pods are quite expensive and I use 2 at a time but I don't have this kind of time also my Nespresso machine is a lot cheaper. Thanks for saving me a whole heap of money.
I use bottled water. No need for filter.
24s is total time. I was always taught it's 25-30s from first drip. So with 8s pre-infusion that's a 16s pull from first drip!!!! Way too fast.
STOP THROWING THE COFFEE!!!
THE HUMANITY!
The steamer for this one is terrible, it's actually just mike warmer!
Where's Gail??????????????

wasting coffee FeelsBadMan
Did you get it from us? Sounds like you're having trouble.
@@larjkok1184 Worked. Got a palm tamp and it changed everything
Coffee is not placed whole in the mill to be fresh. The required amount is placed in the mill for one cup
Why are some of them so expensive? I just looked at the price of this at $1200 it’s pretty par for the course for a premium product but they also have ones for $4000. That’s the price of a car. It’s for the home kitchen not a coffee bar!
Because it has premium quality (brushed stainless steel) and ability to make great quality of coffee
