For those of you that are having to replace the cartridge every 6 months or so, there is a commercial replacement available. It's the 1222HD. From what I have heard, they last much longer.
Also, for those having trouble removing the old cartridge, Moen says to turn the valve stem until the cut off notch in the stem is facing up. Also, for those that have a leaking shower when it is turned off, another thing to check is the water pressure. The pressure reducing valve on some well systems can fail, causing excessive water pressure (100 psi) instead of more reasonable pressure around 60 - 65 psi. Hopefully this helps.

Great video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
What has worked for me is to tie the clip with some thread or thin wire and I tape it to the wall. That way, I make sure that the clip doesn't fall inside the wall.
Also, I used to have to replace our cartridge every couple of years until someone at Moen's customer service suggested to brush the interior of the copper pipe with a wire brush.
I didn't have a wire brush, so I really brushed it thoroughly with a toothbrush. Then, I had my daughter hold a bucket against the wall against the opening and opened the water main for a second to make sure any debris is flushed out. This was a decade ago and we haven't had a leak since.

I just replaced the cartridge via plumber because he tried to take the old one out when he was starting a new pipe in place and the old one broke . tested it while he was here multiple times works fine . Use the shower four hours later and when I turn it off I get tripping that stops within two minutes that didn't happen before . And then every minute or so I get drip drip drip drip drip drip drip nine and I'm in total then it stopped. waited an hour came back still leaking I have a bucket under there now it's up to 11 drops . Wait in our Nata 15 . Is the new cartridge that order something else going on any ideas?

It depends. If your main water line is off and you just need to run to the store for a new cartridge, that’s fine. But if you need your water to work again, you’ll need to reinstall the old one in the mean time.

That "White Piece" you referred to isnt a cartridge inserter. Its a cartridge remover. You place it over the cartridge (like you did) then grab it with a wrench and slowly rotate it back and forth from 11 to 1 O'clock. The copper ridge that the Remover sits against is curved so as you rotate, the cartridge rotates and extrudes at the same time. Also, its worth noting that the tips of the Retainer Pin may need to be pushed backwards as you seat the clip.

There is an off-brand replacement that fits fine for this but from what I've seen in the reviews, it's less reliable than the Moen brand. These should last at least a few years - I wonder if there's an issue with your water pressure or something else - that seems really frequent.

    • @LRN2DIY

If you still have a leak after putting a new cartridge in, it may be due to corroded metal parts (which could be anywhere in the faucet system) or there may be other gaskets or rings in the system that need replacing. It's tricky to identify without a thorough look at it.

He seemed surprised and said he would have someone out soon. I reminded him a month later after not hearing anything, he just reminded me the landlord covers the water bill. So I just let it leak all day 24/7 on cold water so it doesn't affect the hot water heater.

Do you mean it drips from the shower? Or the handle? In either case, it sounds like something wasn't sealed or properly connected. If your home is still under warranty then I'd get someone out to take a look. It's also possible to have faulty cartridges but that's less common.

In this thread, some advice about cleaning out the inside of the valve, as well as a few other issues that folks have found, which could help you out in your situation. diy.stackexchange.com/questions/5065/how-can-i-fix-a-moen-faucet-that-is-still-leaking-after-replacing-cartridge Best of luck!

what if it's still leaking after changing the cartridge?

    • @LRN2DIY
      @LRN2DIY  2 года назад +2

While replacing the cartridge will usually solve the problem, sometimes there’s more to it. I don’t think I can say it any better than the guys at Swan Plumbing in Denver. Here’s their advice:
“First, the leak may not have been caused by a faulty cartridge. Water is full of calcium and other minerals that make it highly corrosive. Over time, the water can eat away at imperfections in the brass body of the faucet. These imperfections often occur during the casting process. Small bumps and soft spots in the brass can wear away. This allows rivulets to form in the brass. You may not even realize that they are there since they can blend in with the coatings on the brass created by the water. When fixing a cartridge faucet, it is a good idea to buff the inside of the cylinder. This will leave a dark line that will allow you to see the rivulets with a flashlight.
Your faucet may contain a ceramic, brass, or rubber seat that is meant to form a seal at the bottom of the cartridge opening. The seat can become damaged with use so that it no longer fits correctly into the hole in the cartridge, which allows water to leak. The O-ring may also become cracked and cause a leak. The best rule of thumb is to replace all of the inside parts of a faucet at the same time so that you get a good seal.”
Best of luck and hopefully you get to the bottom of it!
