I enjoyed the first four books, and intend to read the last book or two eventually myself, but past the first book the story basically goes off in a very strange direction.
An interesting strange direction, but not one that really is well adapted to the big screen or shows. So I wasn't expecting much from this regardless.

This felt like bad fan fiction, the political maneuvering was amateurish, sets lacked people/grandeur as these are houses that rule entire planets aswell as lacking councilors and retainers and general pomp a noble house would have. Zero world building in the sense didnt get much from which house held what power wise only a limited this is a weak house etc. No spacing guild, no Mentats which every house would have especially since there isnt any thinking computers. Sisterhood felt like teen high drama. Best bit about the show was Desmand but even the Reveal was obvious episodes ago. Hopefully season 2 corrects alot of this but doubtful would have time.

This season was very uneven and suffered a lot from the writers presenting the character actions as clever, when they're actually dumb. Young Valya's brilliant plan was to murder Mother Dorotea...and then murder almost everyone else and then hide the bodies in the middle of the convent?? What even is the point of winning a succession fight if you have to murder nearly everyone? How was that covered up? For the first 5 episodes, it was plausible when Valya had only killed Dorotea, but this was ridiculous--and the writers present it like a clever twist 😵‍💫

Yes! The sisterhood is completely flat in this series. Who was even left after Valyas killing spree? Weren't there supposed to be truthsayers at every house etc? They just went along with this massacre? Aren't they all supposed to be highest genius level to weave the so called "plans within plans" etc? It's just silly writing and Valya comes off as a basic bloodthirsty psychopath, not an evil mastermind. And let's not mention the facedancer faceplant lol.

Stuffing all bodies into a lake in the middle of the "monastery" was dumb af, but I don't think it was Valya's plan. At least mother Dorothea wasn't preplanned for sure imo. She just reacted to a situation unfolding.

    • @vanyadolly
      @vanyadolly 22 дня назад

It isn't about winning the fight. She preserved the breeding programme by purging the sisterhood, and she'd do it again as many times as it takes.
Dumping the bodies in the nearest convenient pool makes a lot of sense when you consider these four skinny young women had to do the cleanup. Bodies weigh a lot.
I'm all for critique, but those aren't examples of poor writing on the show.

    • @MaroshBRuNo
      @MaroshBRuNo 22 дня назад

@vanyadolly I agree about what she did to keep mother Raquela's project but it would be extremely stupid to leave the bodies (evidence of mass murder) there to be eventually found. Dune universe has anti-gravity technology already and even if not they had enough time to get rid of the evidence some other way, don't you think? 🤔

It seems you might not have fully delved into the books, as they aren’t solely about religion. Paul himself is often astonished by the depth of the Fremen’s knowledge and wisdom.
From a technological perspective, Paul even acknowledges that nothing in the known universe comes close to what the Fremen can Build.

I endured this show only because of Emily Watson. And as a book fan I can't take any of this seriously.
HBO should have simplified the material but instead they invented new plot lines and turned everything into convoluted mess.
And I specifically dislike the show visuals, it looks like Villeneuve movies and GoT mixed together. The show takes place approx 10k yrs into the future (from 21st century) and 10k yrs before the Dune movies. Less than a 100 yrs after the galactic Machine\AI war. The visuals should be completely different, it should be more sci-fi. Why choose this specific time period and make everything look like Villeneuve movies? I remember watching the one sex scene (trying not to spoil here) and telling my dad "yeah this is gonna come back". Also the whole sisterhood rebellion was obvious and the way it started for me was so dumb, sister Jen literally fell for the most cliche "loosen my cuffs it hurts" move. Also I felt like the radicalization of the other sisters wasn't really developed I guess it technically it isn't since we don't know how the dominos are gonna fall, I felt pretty underwhelmed with this finale, but I see potential in the show, It just needs more time to set everything up and possibly better writers.

THIS! the dumbification of characters so the writers can push the drama. Dumb sister unleashing who she knows to be a dangerous conciousness bomb who's no longer her friend because "straps too tight uwu". The sisters being unified against Valya by vague populistic rethoric when they are literally taught to avoid the trappings of rethoric and emotion? "the sisterhood has lost its way!". Bitch wasn't the sisterhood founded for galactic domination? don't crap on valya. She's been doing great. you were weak and cowardly and closed of mind. Valya, valya, valya. You magnificent truthsayer, voice user, prana bindu master.... couldn't see that javiccos concubine was dick whipped and wasn't going to kill him?. A smart Valya would have sent the face dancer to kill Javicco using the face of their hindu sister. Because what the fuck was the point of having her morph into Ynez. And OnThat Point!!! why did she turn into a random dying soldier to gently prick Desmond? why did she stab him only once? why was she semi unconscious or weakened at all (i assume it is because breaking and repairing your bones ehile melting your flesh for the transformation is taxing. but never explained so impact is lost.) A smart sister would have remained as Ynez. Would have remained restrained. And now she had an in with the queen. pretending to be scorned after the atreides betrayed her. pretending "he escaped with that fucking witch and left me hanging. literally hanging. after everything I risked for him". Boom! a great spy in the inner circle instead of a dumb hostage for Desmond. Why? why? why is that authors keep dumbifying smart characters instead of just keeping them decent? why can't they think this stuff for more than one brainstorming session? why do they keep hiring dumb asses as writers?

This is part of the problem with the way Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson changed what should have been an ideological war of religious fanaticism to "grr Terminator robots massacring humans." The Jihad as depicted by Frank Herbert was a religious movement, and there's plenty in his books implying it wasn't necessarily a good thing. It's not about what they're doing with the AI or what its doing on its own, it's about the fanatical mindset that says "this thing is an abomination and should not exist," which persists even 10,000 years later. The way the Jihad is depicted in the Dune Encyclopedia is far better - it says the whole thing was less a unified movement and more of a disorganized chaos, more like gangs of thugs going from planet to planet, sometimes even fighting each other.
Unfortunately one of the first things BH/KJA did was disrespect the DE and its author in order to pretend their work was better.

It wasn't what I wanted exactly, but it was better than fine. I mean, how could you make a show as good as those two movies, and even have it match the absurdity of how awesome the books are? I think this effort found its feet towards the end. Everything made sense (mostly), but I do think the Bene Gessert needed to put more hammer on the nail. Meaning: In the books, these women are dangerous, like really scary sometimes. While I appreciate putting them in danger more, I think seeing how bonkers crazy their plans can be and having it come together as bodies drop left and right should be leaned into more in the future. I really liked it.... yeah could have been more, a_ lot more,_ but I'd rather have a short season of them figuring things out than 8-10 episodes of them fumbling around with guess work. This way, they know what works, and needs to be adjusted, and any mistakes they make don't have to hold back the entire next season trying to *fix* them.

  • @tj3603

I get the feeling they made a mistake diving so deep into Bene Geserit training and their personal bullshit. Whole point of this faction is they are mysterious, unknowable and hide in the shadows, thinking on scale of entire humanity and thousands of years, rising above immediate concerns. When you show them as college students learning the tricks and engaging in petty feuds, it demystifying them, taking away that gravitas. Not to mention their tactics is so obvious and often not very smart. I constantly wondered why would anyone trust them, when truth seers have entire conversations in sign language in broad daylight in front of nobles they supposedly serve. Could you make your agenda any more transparent, oh mistresses of deception?

As a format, I'm hoping that networks will start changing and adapting. Something like this story would do well with a sort of mid-budget movie shot tight and close followed by a miniseries, and then a closing bigger-budget 90 minute movie that emphasizes the scope and scale of things to make a nice finale.... There are so many ways to present a series in video if there are no commercial breaks, mandatory lengths and no "seasons". Its a shame producers are so beholden to the TV model that is long dead at this point. They just want a dumping ground for stuff when it stops making streaming money... We need whole, complete, tight stories.

When Paul uses it you hear the Reverend mother that taught Jessica behind it. When Jessica becomes a reverend mother you hear all the voices of the reverend mothers before her. When Paul awakens he has his own voice no enhancement and its powerful. Since shes the originator shes not gonna have a voice enhancer it’s just gonna be a guttural scream and i like that. Also when she’s young she only used it when shes under extreme stress. But her older self she uses it with ease. Shows that she has mastered it.

I feel like there this notion that everything has to have a satisfactory ending but its not how Frank Herbert writes, he had to write a second book to just to show how bad Paul as a person was cause no one got it. He always left it with an unsatisfactory ending. Thats why Tolkien hated the book there was no happy ending. This left me wanting more and thats good. Not everything needs a conclusion.

I think The Robot Overlord has infected Desmond, patient zero, with a nano virus that spreads like the flu. Basically anyone who's ever come into contact with him or people he's infected will catch this virus. That's why when he assassinates the kid, the sister, who is also infected burns worlds away because of her Bene Gesserit training.
That sister took the virus home with her infecting all the other sisters except one. The one who doesn't have the same dream as all the other infected sisters. She's probably immune.
I think Tula using Spice to help the young sister who took the water of life and started channeling the dead will tie in somehow in season 2
And with Desmond Harts bloodline revealed I think this show is about how they came to concieve of the Kwisatz Haderach.

It will be necessary and interesting to explore the origins of this power and how Desmond will showcase that potential in a different timeline to give the Bene Gesserit a valid reason to desire a person like him in the future, who they can control since his birth, while also thinking about the wasted opportunity due to Tula's attempt to save her son from her sister's manipulation.

Mark Strong performance and Desmond were the best part of the show for me.

Apparently anything written by the author that this series is based on isn’t great. Shame but HBO taking full advantage of what Denis has done with this IP.

I never read the Dune books, but as a show, Dune needs at least 10 or 13 episodes in order to flush out things that can't be rushed same goes to any super long and detailed books.

Honestly, I REALLY enjoyed this show. Writing could definitely be better, but acting is pretty good, set design, costumes, etc are PHENOMENAL, and the setting/time of the story is a great idea. Yeah, some definitive problems, but I enjoyed the show way more than I thought I would.

Perhaps my standards are just rock bottom after so many series lately being incoherent messes with constantly contradictory character motivations etc., but this series really grabbed me for every moment. And the final episode had me holding my breath for a long time - it was wild how long some scenes kept me wondering who would end up fatalities. And did feel fairly satisfactory to me. That said, I hadn't really thought of the the locations and characters likely to be follow more in S2, which I agree would be a bummer. Was hoping they'd still be secondary..

Smiles. I enjoyed the show and am glad to be getting a season 2. And after being told by all the haters all season long "oh you are so stupid for liking this crap and it's gonna be canceled, ha, ha". You don't have to watch it if you hate it so much but to try and kill it for those who do like it is pathetic.

I knew a season 2 was happening regardless.
The purpose of the series is to get Dune on the map for the next Dune Messiah movie.
