- A very enjoyable morning spent at London Victoria on the Brighton Mainline and Chatham Mainline where we see plenty of services from SouthEastern, Southern and Gatwick Express. I am also aware I was continuously getting a 387 and 378 mixed up!!!! Bear with me on that one.
There is a huge amount to tell about this station but I won't go into such extreme detail, I'll focus on the more important parts of the stations history.
The station was opened in 1860 by the Victoria Station and Pimlico Railway, when it was first opened the station consisted of ten tracks coming into the area with six working platforms. 2 years into the stations life it was already experiencing problems with the high levels of demand from tourists coming into the city oddly enough, there were frequent delays and trains were forced to Que outside the station before space became available.
In 1863 the Great Western Railway started operating their trains into the station which connected to their line at Southall which allowed for even more paths to be created out of the city, with services eventually hitting Slough and Reading.
Because of where the station was located it meant that expansion was nearly impossible to complete. The only way they could get around this was by lengthening the platforms and adding cross over points into all of the lines which meant that you could get two decent lenghted trains into one platform which also helped with the congestion.
When the famous Pullman train was introduced it had always used Victoria as its London base and as such made the station famous for said train.
During WW1 the station saw 12 trains every day running from Folkestone brigning back troops from the front lines as well as trains from Dover supplying the army with weapons and General freight for the war. During this there were roughly 4000 men working voluntarily at the station serving hot food from a buffet to the soldiers coming in and out of the capitol.
Despite the major role it played the station was never directly hit during WW1 but it did suffer some damage during the second world war.
In 1925 all the platforms were numbered in numerical order as at the time there were actually two stations located on the site owned by different companies. But because Southern was one of the Big Four it meant that all the smaller companies became amalgamated into the group which meant they had free reign over the network which allowed them to make significant changes such as bringing in New train services such as the Golden Arrow and the Night Boat Train which would run into Paris. The biggest change to the station was the introduction of third rail electrification which meant that a lot of the inner suburban trains could be worked by the early electrics which of course is the norm nowadays, but oddly enough this station used to have overhead wires installed way before southern came into being.
When British Rail came along they ensured the remainder of the network would be electrified which meant that nearly every service was worked by electric trains, there were a few steam trains still in operation but only on routes were the line hadn't been modernised. The last steam train to leave Victoria on a timetabled service was in 1964 with a service to East Grinstead where after that it was replaced by a DEMU.
After that the station was given further remodelling with shops installed, offices and obviously the links to the London Undergroudn were vastly improved.
My next station is Stratford International, next time I come to this station I will focus on the other side to catch more southern services aswell as the Gatwick Express trains.

Not even a minute in but I know this will be a good vid. Same day I went to Hartford.
I hope you found the vid enjoyable and hope you had a great time out in Hartford
I live on the SEML and that southern/southeastern 377 has now had southeastern titles added but not been painted into the full blue yet. Great video as always!
Thank you kindly for saying so!
@@Tornado922 that's a gatwick express class 387 not class 378 the class 378 is london overground
Another very enjoyable video! You never fail to impress and interest!

Well thank you kindly for saying so :)
Excellent video as usual, including the bloopers Lol. I think you must have set a record for the number of sparks you filmed. Be well and keep safe, regards Gary.
Thanks very much, if there was a record for the amount of sparks captured in a single film I would love to claim that title haha
Great video as always.
Thanks very much
the video is really good...but try do a video from other side of the victoria station plat.9 to 14 and 15 to 19 , very good video thanks
Trains, a Plane and plenty Sparks ;} The amount of lines and crossovers through here is... Wow! The sun broke out at the end for a nice finale, great job! B.P.
This was my first time here and I can safely say it wont be the last. It was incredible :)
Yeah, it was very nice to watch. Part.2? Can't wait! B.P.
Amazing video and have a 🍺 looking toward for the video👍
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed watching this
Brilliant video there Jarred. Loved the old quips too !! The 377/5's you saw are all ex-Thameslink or the old First Capital Connect, not sure which. Southeastern acquired them around 2 years or so ago.
Thanks very much Paul I'm glad you enjoyed watching this, the 377 units are all ex-First Capital Connect
I do think Victoria needs a bit of work now
I think the facade is lovely but I think the rain cover on the front can be either removed or replaced to give the station a less dreary dingy feeling I also think they should remove the building on top of the southern platforms since They could make a nice train shed and it also makes the platforms very dark and dreary and of course dingy.I do feel stuff in Victoria is a bit misplaced and the concourse could be re- done sort of like st pancras but of course without the top level. I think the southeastern platforms are very nice so I dont think I have any opinions on what could be improved there. I think that's it. I think they just need to modernise it and remove things to make it a very nice station. By This comment I am not saying Victroia is a rubbish station, I do love Victoria I just think it needs a bit of work!👍 Love your videos very interesting to watch👍😀

As usual, I never seize to get a kick out of these vids! Nice vid!
I'm glad to hear it :D
Brilliant as always
Thanks very much
Thameslink used to do services to Victoria station, until 2013
Wow so many trains coming in and out busy station.
This is a great station to come to as your never kept waiting any longer than a couple of minutes between trains coming and going
Where's the southeastern service to Orpington 😕
May have started from either Cannon Street or Charing Cross
@@Tornado922 mostly likely London Cannon Street
Gatwick express home 387 not 378 that London Overground
Very nice video sir please keep with the good work
I realised that I had got the numbers the wrong way round once I had finished filming
Another Brilliant Video Here Tornado922! I really Enjoyed this :)
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed watching this :)
Dats a thin platform right there
It is indeed a thin platform but at the same time a very safe to stand from the trains
Those Gatwick Express are the class 387's and they usually operate trains from London Victoria to Gatwick Airport and Brighton on the Brighton Mainline.
I know they are, but I got the numbers for the units the wrong way round
love it! great video
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed watching this :)
I think it’s great we get to see why Cam Camjkerman is claiming delay repay in Kevin’ Trainspoteasts St Albans video
Fantastic video
Thanks very much
Awesome Video Bud :)
Thanks very much mate :)
When I come to London, Victoria station is the first place I’ll be
Hey tornado922! When are you going back to this station?
Great video
Thanks very much
I like the southern 455s there really cool
They have got a good character about them
Yeah they sure do
Why haven't you done a video at Cannon Street or Fenchurch Street
Those are stations I wouldn't probably go and visit as they don't interest me
Nice video tornado
Thanks very much
LONDON LIVERPOOL STREET NEXT
Great malvern plz
My main station on southern trains is London Victoria but London Victoria is loud
It is a very busy station at most times during the day
After Stratford International and Stratford can you go to Farringdon Please
Farringdon is a station I probably wont go to on the basis that it wouldn't have very much variety in terms of traffic passing through the station
just saying you said 378 instead of 387, 378 = London overground and 387= Gatwick express/great northern
I think I end up doing that plenty of times
The 🎤 seems to be picking up your colleague subtly until he starts coughing
The Gatwick Express are 387s not 378s
I know, I knew I had got the numbers mixed up after filming
How have Gatwick Express stolen a Great Northern 387. It belongs to Great Northern.
The only 387 to be sent off lease to GX, every other unit was purpose built for them
If 387105 is here for GX but no 387205 was built.
Southern, Gatwick Express, Thameslink and Great Northern are all the same company so it’s fairly easy to transfer units between them when the need arises.
