Trains at: Gidea Park, GEML, 13/12/21

- A great morning session spent at Gidea Park on the Great Eastern Mainline where we see no end of services from Greater Anglia, Transport For London and freight from Freightliner.
Gidea Park was opened in 1910 and was originally named Squirrels Heath & Gidea Park by the Great Eastern Railway. The station itself hasn't changed in a huge way, the original station was built as an island platform with a link made via a footbridge. The original island platform is what currently stands as the now closed off platforms at this station. There was a signal box located at the station situated on a set of girders spanning the two central tracks. Also located here was a goods shed and coal slaithes both located at the eastern side of the station heading towards the countryside. Interestingly the goods yard was controlled by a separate signal box.
Immediately after the goods yard there was a locomotive works known as the 'Romford Factory', this was the original works for the Great Eastern Railway until the Stratford Works were built and opened in 1847. The 'Romford Factory' works remained in use but instead was used for the maintainence and repair of canvas wagon sheets, now I xsht say with any certainty what these wagons would have looked like but I do have a pretty rough idea.
Initially this line much like every other mainline in the UK at the time was built as double track which worked absolutely fine for the time being. But eventually with a growing population and the need for people to want to go around the country the line was eventually quadrupled in 1930 as far as Shenfield. Once this work was completed a new carriage sidings were built to allow for the growing capacity.
In 1913 the station name was changed in an amazing fashion from Squirrel Heath & Gidea Park to.......Gidea Park & Squirrel Heath. I know right, creative.
This name lasted up until 1947 when British Rail dropped 'Squirrel Heath' and the station was then known as Gidea Park.
Unfortunately this station does have a dark past as on January 2nd 1947 an express train running from London Victoria to Peterborough collided with a local commuter service heading to Southend Victoria, the Express train passed a signal at danger in low visibility due to dense fog and it being very dark. Three of the rear carriages of the commuter train were destroyed which resulted in 7 fatalities and 45 injuries.

Another excellent video again sir! The pair of Renatus 321's certainly do look rather tatty and the pair that bowled you could have had a 322 on the rear quite easily! Good catch of the Powerhaul liveried Freightliner 66 it must be said! I shall look forward to Stratford next and hopefully there will be plenty of London Underground action to add to the mix! Funny about the Liverpool Lime Street bit I must admit! 😂

Gidea Park along with the rest of Romford was previously in Essex. But the natives of UK who are residents of that place still believe that its still in that county even though its now in Greater London.

Apparently all 321s have been withdrawn now
And actually I don't think all of the 321's have been withdrawn yet, so if that's not the case, it probably makes sense to get them while they're about! Plenty more 321's and maybe 322's to come from Stratford I'm sure!
The ex-northern 321s and Renatus 321s will still be in service until next year until the remainder of the 720s have been delivered and accepted into usage

Quite lovely actually. Might be a bit more "interesting" on Sundays, when Cross TfL ElizzaRail services switch between services going on and services terminating here. Although that may be more interesting on the previous station, which would be Romford, especially with the Upminster shuttle. Alas, that one won't be running on Sundays, I fear, but that I actually don't know.
This is a great little station to come to with plenty of action to be seen throughout the day :)

I think Friday April Fools 2022, Crossrail central core will open up and there will be the newly rebranded Elizabeth Line 745s going between Paddington, Shenfield and Abbey Wood and Vice versa. It won’t be until May 2023 when the full Elizabeth Line will be open and there will be Shenfield-Reading and Abbey Wood-Reading Elizabeth Line Branded 745s going the full route and vice versa.
That will be great to see
