  • A rather boring visit to Ipswich on the Great Eastern Mainline where we see wall to wall services from Greater Anglia and a single freight train from GBRF.
The original station was opened on the other side of the tunnel in 1846 by the Eastern Union Railway, the station was opened there because it provided easy access to the harbour where the steamboats would operate from Ipswich to London calling at Walton-on-the-Naze.
The current station wasn't opened until 1860.
The original station had a single through platform and some shorter bay platforms, this was purely because when the station was opened the traffic wasn't overly heavy which meant having a large station wasn't necessary. A new island platform was built in 1883 which would eventually become platforms 3 and 4 that we all know today. Interestingly though the original station building still stands to this day, albeit with a few modifications but fundamentally its the same building.
The GEML hadn't always been the most well maintained and a lot of things were starting to become very expensive to operate and maintain. One of the many things was the old signalling system still in use just North of Colchester. It was a mechanical system that was still in use and it wasn't until 1978 that this was recognised and eventually acted upon. This work eventually took place in 1980 when the line was going through the process of being electrified, because of the modernisation of the line it also meant that the signalling was improved upon.
During the period between 1980 and 1987 Ipswich was a hive of activity, this was because it wasn't until 1987 that the line from Ipswich to Norwich was fully electrified which meant that the intercity services would run using a class 86 from London to Ipswich and then switch to a class 47 for the remainder of the journey. And it would be the same thing going the other way, a 47 would bring the train down from Norwich and then give the train over to an 86 for the rest of the run.
Then over the years that followed the station went through periods of work to make things easier for staff and passengers.
My next station will be Colchester.

The reason there are no 66's in the station sidings is because freightliner don't use them any more. A new maintenance depot and fuelling point was opened about 3 years ago just north of the station on the up side just past the 90's. BTW you picked the wrong time for freight at Ipswich, there's never much in the afternoon, mornings are a lot busier.

Superb video. Glad you had a comfortable ride on the 745's. Also nice that you saw an intermodal train as well. 😀

Colchester? Try going there at 2am - yes really. Was stuck there between 1:30am to 5:30am due to (not-so) Greater Anglia's poor northbound connections towards Ipswich. Anyway, 6-8 freight trains an hour at speed going through there, mainly Freightliner & GBRf 66's and 90's. No Flirts, no Ironing Boards (cl.720).

Its a shame you didn't see much freight but the Effort you put into your videos is all that matters to me.

Hi mate. I strongly recommend you check out Marston Green as it has, 390s stopping and speeding at full speed, 350s stopping and speeding at full speed, and 158s speeding at full speed. Great video!

The 745/1's are often used Norwich diagrams if they need maintenance but 3 on the same day seems unusual.

I always think of 2 x Class 90s with a container consist as a "freight hot rod"

Haven't we seen a triple load of 755's on the Intercity diagrams out of London Liverpool Street before?

Funny the people staring at you for the crime of liking trains. Comedian Russell Howard once made a joke about East Anglians being funny about cameras, I thought it was just a joke..... :D

Greater Anglia also put the 745/0 variants on the Stansted Express diagrams as I think at least one of those gets used on there most days now. Why do that and put the Stansted Express units on the Norwich diagrams then because haven't the Stansted Express units got any tables on them?

Terminated from Oh Blimey - I can't find that on my rail map! - - Birds on trains - probably all fledgelings that haven't learned to get out of the way - so their flying lessons have been abruptly terminated!

As much as the current greater Anglia trains are comfortable and more accessible I do miss the old 90s and mark 3 carriages as well as it being sad to see the number of 225s slowly vanish into history

These stations must be becoming very bland, old, and not really exciting for you now? Lovely vid those.
