Maybe I'm different. I don't mind the external looks long as it has all the features inside that I need. Got a X4 SE F26 fully speced out but hasn't got the styling of a M model. Even has the adaptive suspension. The previous owner spent a lot on extra features
I prefer the bulkier look on the old one compared to the smoother lines. The interior is much more modern but buttons instead of the bottom screen would have been nicer.
The issue with breakdowns is not simply a question of if you have a rainy day fund but the inconvenience of it all especially if you get a fault that requires multiple dealer visits.
Bought my D180 from new in October 2019. I've done over 50,000 trouble free miles. My average is about 45mpg and have achieved 50mpg on a motorway run to Devon. I normally swap cars after three or so years but like this car so much that I'll just keep it.
I had a "discussion" with my wife only yesterday about wing mirrors. Yes they haven't installed wing mirrors since 1973!. They are door mirrors or (at a pinch) rearview mirrors.
I bought the 240D recently and I fkn love it! It goes so hard. I live in the Australian outback so I spend most of my time on dirt and gravel roads, which are usually muddy, and it's amazing. I think just because it's so light, it never gets stuck. I just turn off traction control and put my foot down to the floor. I'm probably not you're typical evoque buyer though
I bought one of these new back in 2019, and kept it for just 9 months before I traded it in. We just couldn't live with it any longer than that. We've had several different Range Rovers in our time, and we still love them. However, the Evoque was a massive disappointment. We didn't even get to drive it home ourselves on collection day - arrived at the dealership to be told that the car needed a software update and wasn't ready! They gave us some nice accessories by way of an apology, but seriously? What kind of brand new car needs a software update and why on earth hadn't they done it before? The infotainment system is glitchy, we quickly got used to the Bluetooth just refusing to work, same with the parking sensors and cameras... One of the fancy door handles refused to retract one day and had to be replaced. The build quality was equally poor, panels misaligned all around the car. You can see the same thing in this video - check out the alignment of that boot lid to the light cluster beside it. For the money they charge for these you can expect a lot better. If you're looking at buying on of these, save yourself the disappointment and get yourself a Macan instead. Off road ability aside, it's a better car in every way... And let's be honest, virtually nobody who would even consider an Evoque is going anywhere near an unpaved surface anytime soon.
That's the sort of informed comment I expect. Interesting to see the comments that are rewarded with a red heart tend to be the ones that have left only positive comments.
I too am surprised I had to scroll down this far to see a comment like yours. ALL the people I know who bought this car has complained endlessly about issues, from software to mechanical failures, and all but 1 traded it in and left the brand.
I love the way they've plugged the hole where the power tailgate should be with a piece of plastic. Just like the Austin Montego did when you didn't spec electric windows....
Honestly that is just pure lazy I get LR wants people to pay extra but putting a lump of plastic over where the button would be is just really lazy and shoddy frankly.
@@Matt-go7ss If you're paying for the Range Rover badge doesn't matter which model it is whether it is the full fat Range Rover or a Velar or this Evoque. A powered tailgate is not a big ask I reckon a lot of rivals at this price point will offer it as a standard feature. That and for Christ sake you get adaptive cruise control on cars far cheaper like say a Camry or Golf I think they are as standard or not very expensive.
I dare say I’ll get some hate for this but I think it’s the best looking LR ever made. There I said it! And one of the best looking mass market cars on sale today. For me it manages to look comfortingly retro whilst looking fantastically futuristic. What other car has ever managed to pull that off? If only I could afford one! Great video as always Matt, keep ‘em coming 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Tried to go for a test drive in one, but at 6'4", and the Evoque having a sun-roof, I was sat with the chair on it's lowest setting, and my head pushed against the ceiling, and that's discounting the sloping roof and rear seats. I like the styling, find the Velar a better "fit" in terms of style, quality and base options, but my BMW X3 is a much better car, and a lot cheaper on a lease deal. As for the reliability thing Matt, the owners reviews across the JLR group tell a definite story. You may get lucky or unlucky on any particular car, but that doesn't make it a 50:50 chance.
Great review as always. Tried one in January, but to be honest the drive/handling is no better than any of the Korean or Japanese offerings in that segment, and their warranties are way better. Stuck with Mitsubishi, I nearly went for a Kia but PX was better. Having suffered Land Rover quality issues before? Never again.
Excellent comment. Kia, Mitsubishi, Honda and Hyundai, etc offer more reliable, cheaper to own, better to drive options with much better warranty and after-sales service. It should be a surprise to readers that Land Rover sold any of these.
@@johngunning2123 Matt makes excellent videos. Sadly he is obsessed with this particular marque. They are what I term hairdressers or "wags" cars. The warranty, price of spares, mpg? All act against them for me. Sadly Land Rover has become a designer label. I get a feeling once the Grenadier starts production we will see Defender sales take a hammering. I agree with you about alternatives, better priced and far more reliable.
I have used all of the cars in this segment and the evoque is the best all round. None of the others really match the evoque when you really do want the assurance in bad weather or poor road surfaces. If anyone wants to talk about reliability then there is not much between them but the evoque does give that qualityn feel with the materials used in the cabin. So a big thumbs up for the Evoque.
I was an Evoque enthusiast, living in Ireland I attempted to buy a second hand 2017 reg at € 42000, but drove it and it was so old fashioned. I instead bought a Tiguan Highline, beautiful spec...
Think Jaguar also need to rethink their standard equipment. No folding mirrors or fully electric seats on my XF which I’ve just bought after trading my Discovery Sport. Think these should be standard on a supposedly upmarket car which is trying to compete with BMW. I am impressed with the Jags lack of rust….5 years old and pretty much zero rust!
BMW don't offer folding mirrors or fully electric seats as standard. My 5 series didn't even have a sync button for the heater temp so had to adjust two controls which was surprisingly annoying!!
I've had mine for a year and overall very happy. The latest pivipro infotainment is ok but relies too heavily on the O2 mobile network, which is crap! The door mirrors create a massive blind spot which makes some traffic islands disappear. I always get 40+ mpg on my D165. Overall pleased with it The road tax is stupid! All the hybrid versions incur the £325 extra penalty, which is why I bought the diesel
Good review, but a little optimistic. This car has some significant irritations. I had mine from new and the O2 sensor went bad leading to rough idling after only 8,200 km. Replaced under warranty but it's a bit poor from a new car. Auto start stop cuts off seamlessly, but it starts quite rough. Rough enough to make you not want to deal with it and turn it off every time.. Can't really drive with the driver's window down because there is some strange wind resonance in the interior going on.. Braking and going back to accelerator like at roundabouts confuses the car and there is a noticeable delay in power delivery. I've had 4 occasions where the infotainment system crashed and I couldn't use any of the onboard functions. It recovers by itself after a couple of restarts. The dealership said it was a software issue. Reasonably comfortable ride though.
I test drove a new Evoque hybrid back in January - an absolutely cracking car, potent, smooth, incredible integration of electric motor and engine (which was very charismatic). The ride was good, although the big wheels did tramline. I ordered a Defender 90 in the end, but its a great car. Waiting lists are horrid though! Oh, and it's a lot more comfortable than my hard as a rock RRS...
Great review Matt. I've had three Evoque's and a Velar, the latest Evoque was by far the most fun to drive. By the way the D180 is a mild hybirid -all but the most basic 148bhp diesel get a 48-volt mild hybrid system. That's probably why the stop / starts are smoother.
Nice colour with the shiny black trim. Some simple chrome buttons on the front edge of the display, that line up with the corresponding function displayed on the bottom of the screen would help anyone. Need the 4th button along, easy to feel and count them as you drive. Room for 10 or so buttons. Easy fix.
Great review as usual. Reliability wise literally every single person I know with an Evoque has has fairly big reliability issues one poor lass gearboxes and spent more time in various garages than driving to work. It's a nope from me!
Had a 30k mileage 2017 model and the timing chain gave up and basically destroyed the engine. Located a 2018 replacement vehicle at the local Landrover dealership but before collecting they wouldn’t sell it because it was making a ‘funny noise’. Ended up with the older 2014 version, apparently a more reliable engine.
I had an Evoque, much better than a lot of people give them credit for but reliability was an issue - EGR valve, EGR cooler, NOX2 sensor all having to be replaced, also had an issue when it was in drive of not being able to select a gear to pull away (drive light flashing). Was a nice looking car and drove really well, economy was also very good and never dipped below 40 mpg was good when it worked though, although it was the D180 it always felt a bit slow. Eventually traded it in for a straight 6 3 litre diesel X3, night and day difference between the two cars and wouldn’t go back now
Well done review. I do like the expanded LR platform bringing in new buyers to the brand. It's hard to imagine a large SUV like a full size Land Rover/Range Rover on these narrow country roads. I cant just imagine another medium to large size vehicle approaching and both drivers clench for a split second to see how much room along the grass to squeeze by. Keep up the good work sir!
This is a review which reminds me of Mark Anthony at Caesar’s Funeral ‘I came to Bury to bury Caesar, not to praise him’. Personally, I don’t like Epoques, aside from that. I always thought them a novel ‘hand bag’ car -especially the convertible. So, pray tell, what did you mean by ‘not when you have long fingernails’ - almost as good as ‘Chavtastic’. And the comments about interior surfaces, a classic couple of lines which couldn’t be sarcastic, no? Anyway I wish you had your own TV slot - you would outclass Clarkson by a high peaks mile! Any way very enjoyable review
I’ve had an Evoque for the past 3 years and it has been extremely reliable. Absolutely love the car and will def buy the electric version when it comes out
Nice looking thing this inside and out. Still really like the original three door Evoque though, to me it still looks like a concept car well over a decade after it first appeared.
Hola!
Its amazing, lovely and spacious interior and great looks, but im still so attatched to the 1st gen because it was so stylish when it came out and was a revolution for LR. Great video Matt! :D
Nice colour Red on Greyed Black and as you passed that car the outside moirror had about an inch to spare, as he wasn't going in the ditch but like all Range Rovers - Pricey as Hell!
Super review as always. Your point about painted fingernails is a great example of missing the customer needs. I knew a person who bought a BMW to replace an Evoque, because...... it had a hated steering wheel, that was the only reason.... fickle people car buyers.
Hello again. 'Matt', I believe the correct name is 'rear view mirrors'. Yes I would agree £35k for a 2019 secondhand Evoque is alot of money where a slightly older other Range Rover model tends to make more sence. Regards, RichardA.
I love my mk1 evoque it’s always a pleasure to drive, I don’t mind the noise of the diesel , Fuel wise it’s doing 29.5 mpg around town (180 bhp engine) I would love to use premium fuel but so expensive at the moment I was changing it from standard diesel to premium every other week till the price increase . The problem I had with my second hand 2018 was balance shaft issue a known problem with the jag engine and a right side drive shaft bearing another known issue , but like you said other manufacturers have issues
just a questions @highpeakautos Do you think that a 2014 evoque would work for a 17 year old, it's a mini suv, and would be good on fuel, and also they are not that expensive. Or would a Freelander 2 be better as it's much cheaper, and good work horses as that is what it would be used for. Let me know your thoughts
If you like the taste of the coffee in the LR service area of your local stealers by all means get one.. just a joke some are actually reliable. I spoke to a male owner once and the comment he got the most was “could you not afford a proper one” he swapped it for an older RR sport and has never looked back
I don't mind the higher tax (involuntary payments to Government are taxes, irrespective the label given) as such, but this is one that is an invitation for fiscal drag; where inflation means the underlying price of the car rises but the tax threshold does not, yielding higher revenues for the Government; I'm not a fan and think it is pernicious. I can't see the UK Government giving up revenue anytime soon either. The 40K threshold was introduced in for cars first registered after April 1st, 2017. As of April 1st, 2022 it hasn't changed. Remind me of your opinion when your new Dacia incurs this tax.
Another interesting review. I've never driven an Evoque and to be honest I have no desire to. Often referred to as a, "hairdresser's car". Way overpriced in my opinion and expensive here in Australia if you have any engine problems requiring a Land Rover dealership (scary thought). Hadn't thought about, "wing mirrors" until you mentioned them. They were fitted on the wings now you mention it. I'm sure I just call them mirrors now.
Wing mirrors - allow the driver to look back down the [rear] wings...! No mention of wing-mounted mirrors! There you go Matt, throw that back at the critics! 😃
Just bought the 150bhp manual Dynamic R in the same colour as yours. Have to say very impressed. 35mpg round town. 44 on a run. very planted on the road. Also, I took a 4 wheel drive hybrid round an off road track in Skipton (free when you buy a range) and I can say it is as capable as a defender on most surfaces. Only thing is the wade depth is deeper on a defender. I will be getting the 4 wheel drive next time, but for the time being, the 2 wheel will suffice for the wife, who absolutely loves it.
75000 miles in 42 months thus far. Zero issues. Can some of those armchair LR haters let me know whence I should expect it to succumb to the 'all JLR vehicles are unreliable' narrative. Hello.....anyone there? BTW, my wife has a 10 year old Freelander 2 with 80000 on the clock. Guess what. No issues. Oh dear. The truth hurts.
The less is more design language really works for these. (Wish BMW would take note!!) A very classy looking thing. Shame there seems to be alot of issues with the information. A couple of our clients have these and both have been in for issues one repeatedly for infotainment issues.
It’s basic because your test driving the ‘S’ version, you need to test the SE or the HSE to get better spec but surely you know that anyway? Can I see you test drive a Velar SE or HSE, I’m intrigued to know your thoughts as i drive a Velar D300 (300BHP) on 22s, fully loaded and love it! Keep them coming.
Sorry about the "man flu" - I am currently recovering from "man covid" - the first known case. Our neighbour has an Evoque and she loves it. It's a diesel and she reckons she can squeeze 45 mpg out of it on a run. She says it's the best car she's ever owned.
I had one as a courtesy car 🚘 in that mid life crisis burgundy! As ever , spectacular filmed ,( you know me and scenery!) good car. Have you sold many ? Thanks Matt 👍👍
Always liked the look of the RR Evoque and the Mk2 brings some nice improvements whilst retaining a lot of the orginal style. The interior looks to be a considerable improvement just a pity about some of those cheap plastics that JLR seem so fond of using! The thing that would bother me is that Ingenium diesel engine - quite a lot of reports of serious engine failiures - stretched timing chains seem to be quite common although think JLR did some updates in 2019. Have to say it would put me off buying the diesel version.
Cheapened? Disagree. The Evoque’s had two purposes. One: to enter the compact luxury crossover market. Two: be a proof of concept car for future Range Rover designs.
Got a P250 back in March 2020.....never realised that the 3 year JLR Warranty was there for a new owner to 'finish' each car with the local dealer. If you doubt me go back to the video at 5.12 and look at that horizontal crease (and plastic trim) across the rear wing and boot...nicely matched JLR!!!! I do like your reviews, but now I know you are more of a car dealer than a car owner...you are just not seeing the problems that £40,000.00 of hard worked for money is seeing....sorry.
In fairness, there are 4 trim levels in the Evoque range which is probably why the one you're driving, the S, doesn't have certain items of kit. BMW Audi and Mercedes do the same. If you want all that kit then you'll need to spend more on all of them. I know what you mean about the looks though. The Evoque has them all licked in my eyes.
Incredibly, you can pay BMW to switch on things like heated seats that weren’t bought when new - they put them in cars whether you order them or not!!!
I like the Evoque, it is superbly designed, comfortable and desirable, but, like all LR's is a risky purchase if you want reliability. The LR dealers are pompous, rude and if that isn't enough, they're ignorant ! Never in a million years, for me ! I'd rather buy a Lexus. As always a top review 👍🏼
‘Picking the better looking model even though you know it’s going to be more troublesome”… oh yes, that will be my love life summed up perfectly 🤪

The average 4x4 driver sits in the road and expects you to go up the bank in your hatchback so they don’t get it dirty!
Totally agree if its a mini range rover the extras should be there would put people of . Good vid matt like it
Absolutely agree, a vehicle of this pedigree should not be sparse on options.
Good tip re the premium diesel.
Nice 🌞, I always liked the 2door (coupe). They stopped making them but that’s the one I’d buy. The convertibles are way too expensive 💰.
I’ve had an Evoque for the past 3 years and it has been extremely reliable. Absolutely love the car and will def buy the electric version when it comes out
I have noticed a positive comment regarding a Land Rover (read... "Lemon") product always seems to be rewarded with a Red Heart from High Peak Autos.
Nice looking thing this inside and out. Still really like the original three door Evoque though, to me it still looks like a concept car well over a decade after it first appeared.
Had one and was reliable surprisingly as l abused it a lot
Ah, a Red Heart for a positive response...Is it just me or can anyone else see a trend here?
Nothing like the full size Range !!! You can’t beat it !!!
also mine has just had the softwear upgrade for the security which is free ,took about an hour at harwoods chichester
Your videos are actually class mate keep it up
Hola!
Its amazing, lovely and spacious interior and great looks, but im still so attatched to the 1st gen because it was so stylish when it came out and was a revolution for LR.
Great video Matt! :D
Hi mat , been waiting for this one ,thanks for your excellent review.
Great review Matt as always, I'm a JLR fan. Love the Range Rover full size and Sport and am impressed by the Velar styling.
The problem I had with my second hand 2018 was balance shaft issue a known problem with the jag engine and a right side drive shaft bearing another known issue , but like you said other manufacturers have issues
just a questions @highpeakautos
Do you think that a 2014 evoque would work for a 17 year old, it's a mini suv, and would be good on fuel, and also they are not that expensive.
I’m with you Matt wing mirrors all day every day 👌🏼
Another interesting review.
At 10:33 - what the hell is going on with that tailgate? It must be 5-6mm higher than the rear wings. Shocking!
Excellent as usual Matt very enjoyable preview 👍
Did yours come with navigation and Apple CarPlay? Is it 69reg?
@@madihaTRai yes. Both. And yes. 69 plate
@@stewartwilliams7944 weird mine didn’t…
literally bidded on one (same colour) for new Mrs and family whip today.. really want a 2.2 with auto box. You actually read my mind 😂
Much improved so much so id consider one but i cant bring myself to like that design, especially the back which is just to squished in.
The petrol version is amazing I drove one not too long ago drinks fuel but feels so nippy and sounds much better
I do have an Evoque PHEV, and my only frustration is that I only get 25-35 miles range.. when its running as an EV its very smooth and even quieter.
Completely agree with you the mk2 looks a lot better to me.
Great review. I prefer the original but change is inevitable. Thanks!!
Great review!!!
I hope Macan next just as comparison;)
planning to get this
The less is more design language really works for these. (Wish BMW would take note!!) A very classy looking thing. Shame there seems to be alot of issues with the information. A couple of our clients have these and both have been in for issues one repeatedly for infotainment issues.
Love the looks but cannot forget all the problems my sister had with hers.
I always liked them but under the skin its a Freelander clever marketing too But all round its a good car
Still gutted I didn’t win the 4.4 Westminster. 😠
There’ll be others
To me it’s a bit of a girlie car, can’t imagine myself behind the wheel, imho, velar will be my next ride after my Q5.
I think the diesel is a 9-speed in the diesel and petrol only models. Iv heard that the new p300e had a 8 speed automatic instead of the 9 speed.
Can you do a video on best method to buy a used car like through finance, cash lease etc? Thanks.
Plus you make a video on business finance, sick videos by the way
Mid sized SUVs such as Hyundai and Toyota are coming with all the options even though the Landrover badge is superior to date.
Nice car good video 🚗🚙🚘👍👍👍👍👍👍
I don't care much for the frontal styling cues but the bright colours seem apt for the hypothetical gal from the nail salon.
Cheapened? Disagree. The Evoque’s had two purposes. One: to enter the compact luxury crossover market. Two: be a proof of concept car for future Range Rover designs.
There horrendous
Would be interested to know what you have had to repair on the Lexus NX, looking forward to seeing that video review ;)
Love your work 👍
Superb and honest
Very good review - nice car. Didn't the two door Mark 1 look wild when it first came out?
Looks like a kia suv. Nice touch with the dacia cloth across the dash. Plasticky red too.
Lovely 😜
At what point do we stop paying £20-£30 more a tank for premium fuel at the forecourt and start looking at using £7 a bottle additives?
Redex or even better Millers 👍
I like the Evoque, it is superbly designed, comfortable and desirable, but, like all LR's is a risky purchase if you want reliability. The LR dealers are pompous, rude and if that isn't enough, they're ignorant ! Never in a million years, for me ! I'd rather buy a Lexus. As always a top review 👍🏼
I totally agree 👏
And you will be driving a KIA
New range rovers are actually much more reliable especially ones like this evoque
@@bahribesimoglu1305 No, I'll be driving my Lexus. 😂
