- My final surprise for Scrappy's wings, Im installing a large solar system to produce enough power to not only serve as a backup for scrappy, but to power anything I want all night long when camping or during rescue missions.

This is mindblowing. This is the reason why I like RUclips. Every now and then you bump into a person or a group of people doing something really really special. This channel, for me, ticks all the boxes. Especially the combination of Mark’s playful mind, his clear sense of practical necessities for search and rescue and his explanatory skills. Not to mention his engineering skills and his productivity. Such a big pleasure to watch your videos. Thanks a lot!
And then there's Mike.
"Together, ... they are UNSTOPPABLE!" Lol.
But seriously, they cause me mixed emotions - role models on the one hand, unreachable bar you can't help but fail to approach on the other!
Clear sense of practical necessities!?
I second this!!!! Great job guys!
@@super_slo Mark?
Mike is Thing #1 - Mark is Thing #2.
Next video probably: "Well guys, I wasn't satisfied that Scrappy couldn't fly without atmosphere so I added rockets and pressurization, so that if I wanted to, I could go say hi to the good people aboard the ISS, fix the Hubble if the backup computer goes out, and offer NASA a search and rescue option they don't currently have as space tourism becomes more and more a thing in the coming years... Back to work!!!" ;-) -Daven
🤣🤣🤣
That plane would make a good BrainFood episode
The next mega projects video?
thats never happening tho. earth is flat, space isn't what they say it is and the ISS is faked in swimming pools - AHHH HAHAHA!
@@dinobot_maximize The earth is round and we know this because of many factors unless the Bermuda Triangle is the edge of the earth.
Just when you think Mike can't possibly pull any more rabbits out of a hat, out comes a giraffe. Amazing.
The ideas in Mike's head probably reproduce like rabbits in a hat.
@@pete3pete There aren't many people I really look up to. Mike is one of them. Not only is he incredibly gifted, he's a genuinely NICE guy.
Always glad to see another scrappy update video drop! Awesome 😎
This man just blows my mind. I never thought watching an engineering genius at work would be so entertaining. I can't hardly wait to see the finished Scrappy. It'll be like watching a baby being born.
I put a sticker on my Grumman and had to take a nap afterwards.
It's a Mike Patey sticker though so the sticker itself has a lot of additional parts, functions, features, etc
That sticker is better, stronger and lighter than all before, I guess? 😉🤙🏻
I have to take a nap after watching most of Mike’s videos.
That sticker alone just shaved 5 knots off your stall and added 5 to your Vne🤣
😂😂😂
And it kept working while you slept...
I think the most exciting part is the fact that when he’s “done”, he’s not done. There’s gonna be something that he thinks about doing after this plane is already complete. Absolute genius, Mike! Keep inspiring. Keep pushing the limits. You’ve earned a fan for life.
An old engineering adage: "If it isn't broke, it's simply because it doesn't have enough features yet!"
With only two seats and with the ability to carry large loads under the wings he should make some carbon fiber people carrying pods. Can use the excess electrical power for a heat pump to heat or cool the pod interior. They would easily double up as extra cargo carrying capacity for day to day or S&R usage. Bonus points for being able to air-drop cargo like life rafts with supplies or cases of beer for thirsty campers. Integrate the Garmin system to auto release when drop calculator indicates an on target landing.
Draco X is coming up
@@peach6405 yep, I think allot of people forgot he as another Wilga waiting to be build!
The motorcycles will also serve as auxiliary landing gear should there be a main gear failure, and Scrappy will be the first ever aircraft with MATO (motorcycle assisted take-off.) 😂
LOL! 👍🏻😆
Good one!
That's the secret that they are releasing at best tugs.
My God what type of landing could possibly take out that landing gear😁
Electric taxi using the motorcycles
I am getting SO excited as you complete Scrappy..!! I hope you will post where we might come see this amazing aircraft in person.. and it would be a real honor to meet any team members as well!!👍😎👍
Mike, Scrappy is incredible, but what I love the most is you always are thinking of others and ways to help them in a bad situation. God Bless you and your family. Your inspiration is priceless!
Ahh yes, overengineering the shit out of everything. I love it.
Sincerely,
a German
lol...for you it wouldn't be overengineered then? just normal
@@shaneward6689 Maybe thats how Einstein got the idea of relativity
That's the German way...
Yeah, World famous German engineer. I fully expect that Mike would attribute some of his inspiration to that.
I wonder if he uses 8 different kinds of fasteners to hold the cup holder on and require half the plane be taken apart to access the last fastener like the Germans did/do.
Just when I thought the wings couldn’t get any cooler Mike exceeds all expectations once again.
Ron: How much overengineered you want your plane to be ???
Mike: *YES*
I think it was "YES³"

@@toddprifogle7381 And thats before he over builds it 🤣
Mike you are truly one of the best guys I've ever witnessed in the field of aviation. You really seem like a wonderful person. I'd love to meet ya some day. I'm a disabled retired veteran with a big heart for helping other. That's why its easy for me to spot someone that has a big heart that cares of others around you. So happy I come across your page. Really enjoy the video's.
You and your team are an example of what this country is about! You have the resources, the ability, enthusiasm, and the knowledge to deliver a product and a service to benefit many people. Thank you! You are indeed making the world a better place.
You should consider mounting a extreme high def camera on the underside of your aircraft to use in your Search and rescue. It is much easer and with better vision for your back seat observer to watch a video screen than they could see through a window. Also it can be reviewed later for something you might have missed during your first pass. Just a suggestion.
Like a gigapixel one? With the 100TB solid state drives now this could be a real thing.
Why go half-way? There are 8" diameter FLIR turrets that would work beautifully mounted up under the nose or on one of the wing-cargo points.
@T.J. Kong I would love to see L3 donate one just for the “oh hey civilians check out our cool expensive toys”
Thermal is the way to go. Even just having a spotter looking out an open window with something like a pulsar accolade2 will make spotting humans 20x easier. I hope Mike and his SAR team use thermal as it really is a game changer
Yeah FLIR is the way. Augmented visibility in fog, night, etc.
So, scrappy was just an acronym all along..

The level of thoughtfulness in this build is absolutely astounding. Can't wait to see yall take her up.
definitely, it is going to be pretty heavy though
@@jakub-kube good thing he's got Nitrous
I don't get it.. how can the solar panels be a structural part of the wing, are they aluminum backed? It seems like they should be backed by aluminum and riveted in, or the will just crumple up with air pressure.
@@gwenives9203 I just mentioned that above, the negative pressure on the top of the wing might suck them right out! Good thought!! --gary
@@gtr1952 my concern with the panels is that if they are not well secured to stop flexing and vibration, they normally fai lprematurely. The normal way to secure them is with adhesive coating the whole back of the panel and glowing them to a solid surface.
Scrappy keeps getting better and better!
Love it. Keeping warm is worth it.
I feel like scrappy needs a FLIR turret so the search doesn't have to end after the sun goes down.
I think he already mentioned having cameras for taxi purposes that will have low light/FLIR capability.
@@irvingsmith3449 Draco had it as will Scrappy. In the mountains around where he lives SAR is always out looking for lost hikers in the mountains, snowmobilers, even boaters overboard. The system isn't military grade but just about.
Thats a great idea. Maybe a hud display with an A.I. algorithm designed for search and rescue.
Is Ron a pilot? Just curious. Anyway, back to work.
Projector built into Scrappy?! So when we see a movie playing on the clouds we know where Mike is.
Mike: runs thousands of hours of CFD to optimize the drag coefficient of every single rivet.
Also Mike: hangs two full size motorcycles off the wings.
I love it man, this is so insane it’s beautiful. Can’t wait to see the plane completed and you out enjoying it in the backcountry.
Back to work! 💪
Ah ha but thats why he is going after all that drag..... so he can mount his car under the wing.... car? I meant bike...
Yeah hahaha Mike is the best
Who’s wants to get lost in Utah on purpose when scrappy is finished? You are an inspiration Mike. Your adherence to perfection regardless of difficulty has been my mentor throughout these last couple years following you. A saying has arose: “ would Mike accept that kinda work on scrappy?” Thank you
I would love to watch the first flight !! So glad you built it as if it would last forever !! My jet is a 1958 and still flys and looks like new ! and boy am i glad it was built to last !! I hope she turns out to be better then you expected and puts a Permanent smile on your face !! Thank you Mike !! For all the Inspiration ! Take care and stay safe !! Gary K
Batmobile of the sky. Epic build Mike.
We’ll need an animated Scrappy adventure series… or at a minimum, a guest appearance in the next Cars movie!! Scrappy to the rescue!
LOVE your work Mike!! You’re a HUGE inspiration mate. MANY thanks for that alone 🙏🏻🌟🌟🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Planes Fire and Rescue spinoff (lol, spinoff of a spinoff of Cars).
Definitely needs to have its own franchise. Kind of feeling a Mikey-esque vibe (turtles) - goofy and fun loving, but when lives are on the line there's no one you'd rather have coming to save you. For some reason I'm also feeling a Patey-planes A-team kind of setup.
The only RUclipsr I will rewatch. Mike and his family are awesome, this include his right hand man Ron....I love that guy and how much mike loves him. My whole family looks forward for Saturday and scrappy updates. Also, get your brother on the Chanel more. I freekn love him too. Thanks guys, much love!!!!
Mike Billy Mays'd the hell out of this airplane build. Every episode there's a "But wait...there's more" and adds trophy truck suspension, nitrous injection, a rocket, adjustable suspension, not one but TWO leading edge flaps, and now solar panels... I can't wait to see this machine fly.
Exactly! New from Ronco (Ron Popeil) , It’s Scrappy! “ But wait, there’s more!”
It just doesn't stop. You guys are true pioneers. Keep up the good work.
This plane gets crazier every time I watch a video. Thank you for working S&R, its not always fun but its appreciated.
Ron hit the best friend lottery..
He sure did!!!
I love how Mike will go out of his way to save a couple grams and also isn't afraid to over build / over plan / over pack for things related to safety. Priorities!
He's a calorie counter and binger at the same time!
This has got to be the most capable Search and Rescue plane ever built! Absolutely incredible engineering and forethought for the mission! Thank you for sharing all your thinking and rationale as well as the execution of the build by you and your staff.
Agreed. Full redundancy, solar, equipment power, permanent emergency kit onboard, motorbikes on the wings, the list just never ends. Every time you think Mike's finished hes build something else that nobody would even have dreamed of.
By this point Scrappy doesn't need a hanger, it's going to have to launch from underneath Mike's swimming pool to the Thunderbirds theme. This plane *IS* search and rescue.
thx mike and ron and crew for my ear to ear grin as scrappy backed beetween those wings . what a moment!!! congratz guys
In order to make myself productive I watch videos of Mike Paty being productive.
Nothing like waking up, drinking coffee and watching a new Scrappy video. 😂😁👌🏼
That my Saturday morning! I wait for the notification!
And its my birthday !! This is all a dream 😳
Exactly what I’m doing right now
Just when you're convinced Mike has included everything possible on Scrappy; he introduces a complete solar system and a humongous double paint booth.
Iove this guy.
What a joy watching this process.
Now how can I hitch a ride to air venture!!!!
The scrappy RC aircraft are going to sell like hotcakes.
E-flite is already sitting at their desks thinking “ how the heck are we suppose to do that on a model ? “
And charge itself too!
I don't think we'll get a HH Scrappy. Mike out-engineered their whole team on this one, and they could never do it justice at a price point that would sell. I hate saying that, because I would love to park a Scrappy next to my Draco.
@@citizenblue I've been thinking the same thing. Good luck horizon hobbies

Every single video I’m completely blown away and in amazement of Mike’s skill, I am glad I get to watch what he is doing, unbelievable the craftsmanship, it would be so cool to get to shadow him for a week just to see his attention to detail.
Wow, Mike, I didn't see solar panels coming! You have packed a whole bunch of capability into your baby. So cool and right. Scrappy is one of a kind, truly a world first. I can't wait to see it all come together and up there. Good luck we're all with you.
Mike, you should take home lots of awards from ACCA this year. You out did yourself with designing, engineering and building Scrappy. And we got to come along for the entire process. Hope to see you in Illinois and Wisconsin. in a few days. I'm just blown away at what you can do.
1: Oversized engine & prop capable of near VTOL thrust in still air. Check.
2: Wings able to hang ground search vehicles and don't know the word Stall. Check.
3: Suspension that can handle hard landings in rough terrain. Check.
4: Enough power to build a second plane in the middle of nowhere. Check.
Master plan: Search and Rescue confirmed.
Seeing all of the pieces over the build I can finally see the big picture, and it's very obvious once pointed out.
Excellent work Mike and Co.
I really hope you post your rescues and epic adventures. Can't wait... you are so inspiring
I'm going to cry thanks for posting fast! Super excited to see the wings on!! All of us in Alaska can't wait!
Are you building a plane or a flying off-road motorhome? Every time I think you're done, you do something else to put me in awe. Wow. Just wow.
@T.J. Kong So, you're saying he's building a Transformer. I'll endorse this. Would recommend.
No one has seen the ducted fans that deploy out of the wings for VTOL yet…ha! Always enjoy watching engineering on the bleeding edge. Keep up the talents on loan from God! Can we get some bloopers, I know there has to be one somewhere like, oh crud I bolted that on upside down or humm I think that goes on the other wing!
Aerodynamically shaped pods that could carry a multitude of specialty rescue equipment that mount to the motorcycle wing mounts might be useful.
I jokingly said it in the other video, but he's absolutely going to whip up a whole assortment of attachments for his powered "hard points".
This just gets more insane each part of the build. Cannot wait for some footage of places scrappy visits in the future
Mike, you are a Aeronautical Genius no doubt..!!!! With a Loyal Friend like Ron faithfully working along side You AND Your Family too, it DON'T Get No BETTER..:)
I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of design he comes up with for the floats down the road. Also have you all heard about the Alphadan engine? It is expected to have PT6 power out of a light and cost-effective 4 cylinder. Loving the build! I hope the wing design makes it into GA and for other rescue and fire bombing aircraft. Congratulations to Mike achieving this milestone. Have fun at Oshkosh! Can’t wait to see this beast fly and see all that it can do!
Absolutely incredible the “Swiss Army knife” features you incorporated into Scrappy! Maybe you could get Victorinox to sponsor Scrappy, or at least make you a Scrappy centric version of one of their knives to go with the “kit”! Very awesome adding in the solar power capabilities.
but only the XXL would fit the theme 🤣

For GA perhaps. AF (armed forces) has all the nutty folding wing and sweep wing designs plus whatever the heck is going on with the Osprey lol
I'm surprised there is no carbon fiber shear wall spanning underneath those numerous solar slots. Like to see a Bend Test now. And a temp reading camera monitoring the inverters.
Love that Scrappy will be used for SAR as well! Thank you for donating so much of your time & equipment to helping others, Mike, Mark & Crew!
This build has attained levels above what I (or most people assume) thought was possible.
I can’t wait to see this thing fly.
I was going to build a micro version of Scrappy, but this thing is out of my league at this point lol
There is military grade... then there is Patey grade! This airplane has redundancy to spare!
Military grade means the lowest quality you can get away with, to the highest price you can get away with.
Not a single person in the military sees it as a quality insurance.
