Singer songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard performs music from his most recent album A. Enlightenment, B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is no C) at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville, TN.
It wasn't that long ago that Ray Wylie Hubbard mentioned to an acquaintance that he wouldn't mind being a hybrid of Guy Clark and John Lee Hooker. Now, I'm no seer or mystic, but my instincts suggest that wish came true, and then some. A. Enlightenment, B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is no C) confirms it. Ray Wylie Hubbard writes the kind of songs that make you want to ride along no matter where he's going, because you know it's gonna get strange somewhere along the way. The references to Muddy Waters being as deep as William Blake ("I really do believe it,'' Ray says) and lipstick pickups, resonator slides, the dreams of drunken poets, deceased call girls, opium, wasp's nests, clouds growing a tail, his ability to segue seamlessly from primal exclamations of carnal lust into songs about salvation without pausing for irony; and a craftsmanship that manages to rhyme mescaline and gasoline and Volkswagen with dragon while painting vivid portraits of characters both real and unreal, all evoke a sense of place that is larger than life but in no way made up. Anyone who's followed Ray Wylie Hubbard over the long and winding path he has traveled already knows he possesses the kind of exceptional gift for observation that any songwriter yearns for. His sense of wonder is tempered by an accumulated wisdom and knowledge that comes with experience that has elevated him into the Wylie Lama of Texas Видеоклипы
When I listen to Ray Wylie Hubbard so do my neighbors
😂
Do they know how generous you are??
On the head
😂
@@michaelbrandon4730 perfect!
A true outlaw if there ever was one. Great music..
Why have I never heard of this man before. He seems like a national treasure to me. What a fantastic talent!
I agree!!!
ol' Ray is great, cool lyricist ability along with a true rhythm king, gotta love his music
3 years from the original comment I wonder how far down the ray Wylie rabbit hole mans went
I hear ya, been listening to Ray for over 30 years myself, he is a cool cat to visit with and swap stories@@mattsealey4314
I've been listening to rock and roll music for the past 45 years. Now I have discovered that some of the best music I've ever heard is considered country. Ray Wylie Hubbard is one example of the great storytellers and songwriters that I've grown to love.
David, with you all the way. As a Brit I consider this music as Americana. I’m sure that’s just my interpretation of the genre. Listening to WWOZ in NOLA, particularly Black Mold I have been able to hear so much incredible “Americana” that otherwise I’d be unlikely to hear in UK.
Same. Hard to find a lot of good new rock and metal. Most my time is spent listening to everything from Sturgill Simpson and Turnpike Troubadours to Charlie Parr and RWH.
Check some James McMurtry, Just as tasty.
@@Soop-LadleThank you, I just went and checked james and mcmurty out Any other suggestions I would appreciate
Same as you I'm starting to love country music, just not the shit you hear on the radio.
This man belongs in the hall of fame...of life
Don't blow it up until I have him at my wedding. ( put you on guest list)
Wow!!!!
This man i ss somethi ng ive never heard im a bluu grass player i love his music love meet talk to him
Yes he does 😌
I have five older brothers just like him at home!
1978 I was with a house band at a club on Lemmon Ave in Dallas, two blocks from a joint called Mother Blues. After our last set on Fri & Sat nights we’d drop in at Ma Blues and catch RWH there usually one or both nights. This cat was already a local legend back then! Probably seen Ray 50+ times through the years. He’s been a major influence on my musical journey, and for that I’ll always be grateful. Hell, I even live on a lake called Ray Hubbard! Lots of famous blues and rock musicians from the Dallas area, from Robert Johnson to SRV, but Ray is probably the coolest of ‘em all.
The days I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, I have really good days - RWH
After all these years…Ray and I are kicking still …in this music business….still a mystery how the Grammys and network TV have ducked him….is it his a mgmt problem…God Bless and keep. ya Ray
I used to live on a street called Hubbard Blvd. It was a lakefront street. In Toronto.

Grateful people tend to enjoy their lives more than those who are not grateful!
One of the best concerts on RUclips
A testament to the man himself if you scroll through these comments you'll see ones from ten years ago saying they've listened to him since the 70s, all the way to some a week ago saying they've heard him for the first time and fell in love. My brother introduced me to him about 8 years ago.
I’m in love 😻 So grateful for this man.
Yeaman he's great and alwayz has been well since mid 70's forsure. And I was lucky enough to here him when I left out for my first out of state job down on Louisiana and Texas line I just fill lucky I got to see and here people

Old Boy said he got us 2 tickets come on up hell just 40mile we left day before so get a Stent put my leg in Pairs outpatient wrong missed him, lost half my leg, and got to ride in a helicopter is what my girl . On top of that I've walk since and never probably will get a chance see and here him again. I would hop to see him again .Only way I see a doctor again is for a toe tag. Peace Yal
Love me some Ray Wylie Hubbard! National treasure.
He’s the Bob Dylan of Texas country music. Truly the Revelator. 👊😎👍
I'm a dinosaur. I'm actually from a hippie. Generation. We didn't have instant communication. I used to have to write a snail mail letter to write to someone. How the world has changed. I'm glad I've lived long enough to hear this music. And have more friends every day!!!😉😁😂
And things were better then!
Been following this guy since the '70's. Brilliant and his repartee adds so much. He has helped so many young musicians. I think this guy hung the moon. God bless him!
Hello how are you doing today..?
I live in the north of england a cold and rainy land as far away from Texas as you can get in any real sense and yet I'm sat here drunk and stoned so singing along to ray with my mates. Texas is a state...of mind.
How is England
TEXAS is home to us pardner. Hell, The rest of America is down right lucky to be attached to us. Our women even have tattoos high up on their thighs. If they like ya they'll let ya kiss " it" a little😂TEXAS FOREVER!!🐂

@@porkyswelding Hope you dig RAY WILIE HUBBARD, he beats a poke in the eye w/ a sharp stick I'll tell ya. We love our long neck beer and blunt down here too. Adios
I’ve followed a large range of musicians over the decades, but I stumbled on RWH in a recent Austin City Limits concert a couple months ago. I haven’t listened to anyone else since. The song writing is amazing. The instrumentals are fantastic. His humor is incomparable. How had I missed him all these years? Just great music. Totally irresistible.

An Okie turned Texan turned the best dam story teller in the bizness!! I'm blessed to see him yet again TONIGHT. He's the hardest working dude in music. With love & hope he'll be spinning his magic for a long time, God knows our world needs more common sense tunes like his & Dr. Livingston & Jerry Jeff's. Love & peace.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS GREAT STYLE OF
SOUTHERN COUNTRY ROCK,,BLUES... GREAT STUFF...RAY.
Hey how are you doing today.?
Somehow youtube stumbled upon this video 6 months ago.... I had never heard of him and now i've seen him 2x. This guy deserves so much more recognition
Mr. Ray Hubbard is one great entertainer. He possess what I call the 4 main ingredients of good talent. He plays instruments, He sings , He's real in the storys he tells, and He laughs and makes us laugh. He , mr.Ray Wylie. Hubbard is a great entertainer..
I will soon be 79 listened to most of the best ,when it comes to music, thismr.Ray is on the top of my list fo entertainment wilmer glen knight covington,la.
“Tempo people” that’s so cute in terms of audience interaction!
If Guy Clark was your dad that you had to grow up to realize was cool; Ray Wylie Hubbard is the badass uncle that you always knew was cool.
This guy is conjuring up a sense that the nerves in my soul have never been exposed to. Until now.
I found this on RUclips. Never herd of the guy. What a find. I love his guitar playing style.
Same here.
Same
Never heard this guy before, I'm into almost every kind of music you could name and just never saw his name anywhere. The guy is awesome!

He's a Giant to us here in Texas. Gotta like his wit, lyrics and guitar
'Not sure why but don't ever remind him about playing with the Cowboy Twinkies.
Welcome!
Ray Wylie Hubbard is a big inspiration in my life. God Bless this Man and his Music
His last statement before leaving the stage "The days I keep my gratitude higher than my expectations, I have really great days" pretty much sums up life's golden rule of happiness and karma.
RIP Uncle Kenny, southern Ohio, gone this morning. Introduced me to this wonderful music
My condolences! Good that you are remembering him in a way that he would love & will help you to heal & process the loss of your dear Uncle! Know that he’s watching over you from above!
he said play on a few other days that would make the playoffs in his season with his first win over all time at a baseball ⚾️ in a row that was the last time for penrod play play and then a second game for his team mates and a third round in his final two weeks in season three ap👍👍👍🤣
Mr. Hubbard you're a troubadour of the days of yore! Keep on doing what you do!
I'm old country boy from NC and this is my kind of music..Im a old hippy and proud of it
Me too old friend! Let's keep it that! Amen!
@EZ Z country boys and hippys ain't got nothing to do with liberalism or conservativism , that's that politically correct bullshit , so I'm wondering with that being said your not a country boy and you sure as hell not one of my people
so what are your ways of life?
I love Ray Wylie Hubbard, he is the real deal! A true Texas Outlaw!
Heard songs by this guy before but holy shit this is incredible
One of the greatest "Tunesmiths" of our time!!! Genius!!!!!
You don’t have to listen very hard to discover this music treasure's wisdom. He shares it with both wisdom just the right amount of irony.
Hey how are you doing..?
Listening to Ray Wylie Hubbard is one of the joys of my life
I only just found him and your comment is totally believable! Yes!!!!
I've watched this 4 times today, and I still can't get enough. This guy is so awesome. Ray has always played his music for himself primarily. He's just got that passion. As a very rookie guitarist, I am amazed by what he can make a guitar do, and I am trying to soak it up. Saw him live at Willie Nelson's 4th of july picnic, and hoping to catch another R.W.H. show! You rock, Ray!
Cheatw00d keep playin
Why would anyone dislike Ray Wylie a Texas Legend
The communists who don’t Love Ray , must have voted for the idiots in d.c. probably listen to rap ghetto GARBAGE ☠️💨💩

My wife and I were driving through Texas and she was looking for Texas songs for us to sing along to. She found "Screw You, We're from Texas" and I've been hooked on Ray Wylie Hubbard ever since. But listening to this recording has made me a rabid fan!

A true American Songwriter.
Funny and awesome. Best thing I’ve heard in a while. 👏👏👏
Happy, I'm just so happy to realize that there are artists still left in the world
This is a one of a kind performance. Excellent!!
Nothing like Ray telling a tale! Aint it fun being from Texas!
Awesome...telling his truths and sharing them. So authentic.
You came into a gas station I worked at in Kyle Texas. Surreal moment haha. Honor meeting you sir
until about an hour ago, had no clue whom this guy is. Now I do and I like this
That's the way I found him too. Course I'd heard his music before but never knew the face. Heck I think it was right about fives yrs ago. Appro, since it's New Years eve.
Are you still going?
I just discovered him from a youtube blessing. He is fabulous.
Are you related to Justin in Penna?
I grew up listening to him. Saw him in Sacramento about 20 years ago at a small venue that seems to be gone now.
Stumbled upon this through Hank 3, this guy is awesome, so genuine and honest and plays from the heart with love for his craft
Like a lot of great writers and singers, he borrows from the greats, adds something new and makes his own great music. This guy is a fantastic writer and performer with a great sense of humor in his songs and about himself.
I can tell you one thing. I've never once made a comment on any youtube video, ever. But this Ray Wylie. Wow... Truly an authentic character with a sense of humour and talent to match. Cheers brother.
Ade cull
Shane T hell yeah!!
Charlie mcmurtry is good. Tony joe white was great too. There are a few
It’s John Lennon! Really the lyrics and constant spectacles correction gave him away. Look closer he just died his hairs and put on American accent but listen closely you can hear remnants of Lennon. It’s HIM dudes ! Look at old Lennon footage and photos
Truth cuts, beautifully.
FYI i saw Ol Ray Wylie in Oklahoma City in 1973 with the Cowboy Twinkies. My how Ray has evolved into something special. One of those old traveling folk/bluesmen singing about life. Kind of special ain't it kids. Not many talents who can still put on a show with just a guitar and themselves. Kinda makes you glad to be human.
Yes sir!
really! I'm from Austin and was deep into the scene in the 70's. I didn't even know about him! What the hell?!
Lynne Kelley I understand. Ray Wylie in the early 70's was not the Ray Wylie you see now. He went through some serious evolution to turn into the crusty old bluesman you see today. He is kinda special isn't he?
aint, I was nowhere that scene but I sure dig your story.
ainthurtinnobody for sure bud, I'm an okie myself
This is brilliant one of a kind song-writing. I always liked Ray's picking style too.
Great stories Ray love your way of keeping it simple
He is solid gold.If he sang at your wedding, you are lucky, indeed.
Great guy, down to earth, what I always respect, and such a great songwriter and guitar player...GOLD
He's Wiley that's for damn sure. Love those lyrics man, you've been there I can tell. Thanks.
I love this concert. This is the first thing I heard of RWH. Ray does some great finger picking & fun stories that make this concert the total package .Best of all it is the amazing songs he just keeps finding. I live in Australia & dream to get to Austin soon to see Ray, Hayes, Slaid & all the other amazing Texan songwriters - (Ray is no. 1)
Only Slaid is Really "Ah Mainah"
I am seeing him tonight in Raleigh
Amazingly Intelligent songwriter. Have you made it Austin?
What a writer. And entertainer. I'm only half way through.
Most of his songs are one line long, separated by commas but never periods. Masterful songwriting. The humor is rich icing.
This video has not changed my life nor has it changed my choice of music but what it has done … it has changed my evening for the better and thank you very much for making this available to experience.
iam 54 years old and i love neil young and all that kind of music, willie too lol, but i have never heard of this guy before intell today, i dont know how i found him, but iam glad i did. I sat here and watched the whole thing twice. what a tresure.
sam V yea where have ive been lol.
sam V yea the music industry has gone to hell, and i mean that for real!!!!! inless you want to sell your soul to the Devil and do rap, you will never make it in the music industry.
Brother...you got to get to Texas. Red Dirt music like Ray Wylie seldom leaves the state but man....get to streaming 'The Range 95.3' out of Dallas-Ft Worth....and get yer mind blown on Texas red dirt music. In Texas small bars have red dirt poets every night all over the state...you'll never hear of these guys in Delaware ..but I know Dallas best....Poor Davids Pub....Love and War in Texas...a bar in Plano...wild country Texas music....unlike anything outside the state.
john dennis (Murder was committed), down on music row ! goggle it.
If you like Ray Wylie you will love Billy Joe Shaver
Wow! I had never heard of Ray Wylie Hubbard previous to just stumbling on this! He is fabulous!
Hey how are you doing..?
I bought an harmonica (harp) in C today after spending a night bingewatching this and smoking , seeing and hearing Country Blues /(folk) for the first time. This is so good performed. Im stunnend 😳👏🏾😍
I’ve loved Ray Wiley Hubbard since the 70’s around Austin. I am glad he found his salvation and is still alive to listen. RIP Townes Van Zandt , who was not able to. I love you forever Townes. “One of Your Fine Ladies”
Townes was a musical genius who could write with the best of em .
I've been listening to Ray and Willie for around 40 years now and enjoy every minute
It’s John Lennon his voice lyrics and constant spectacles correction gave him away! Look more closely hear more closely 👀 at old footage of Lennon. He died his hairs and put on American accent. This is what he wanted
Ray and Willie hahahaha thanks for the laugh kiddo
@@leonardhpls6 Yeah Ray Wylie Hubbard and Willy Nelson used to play a few bars in Austin Texas way back last century

I met both Ray Wylie and Johnny Vandiver through my coffeehouse called the Sword and Stone located in OKC. Both Dallas boys were attending college north of OKC near Edmond. How lucky for us!
Great picking!!!👍👍 That guitar sound is totally amazing!!!
In 2010 Ray Wylie was playing at the Calgary Folk Festival and,i confess,I did something I never do,after his set I went and talked to him. He's the same on or off the stage--funny,intelligent and unassuming.
I grew up on merle, willie, jones, cash and waylon - your lyrics would make them all back up and step up - u r a treasure sir
If you don't love this, you have no soul!
Absolutely fantastic! One of my favorite performers.
