I turned away from this type of music for years, because I heard it so much as a kid growing up in North Carolina. When I first heard Billy a ton of memories came rushing back to me and I have been a fan ever since.
I'm still not a huge fan (and/or remain unexposed to or ignorant of) of bluegrass in general but there's just something so relatable and compelling in BMFS's lyrics and his song melodies and progressions. There are so few "guitar hero" level players who's music I find so compelling, in fact, its the opposite. I can only take electric guitar instrumental wankery for so long, Yngwie, EVH, all that. wow! I learned a lot this week. I was listening toJoe Rogan podcast talking to Tucker Carlson. That's a mouthful. Tucker said he likes bluegrass and mentioned Billy Strings so I thought I'd check and see what that was about and I found Billy Strings doing Doc Watson tunes. I gotta tell you, I grew up with Hee-Haw on tv and I thought it was such a dumb show I didnt even pay attention to it. When I heard the name Doc Watson, that was what I thought of. I had NO idea how talented, influential and important to Bluegrass music Doc was. Thank you Billy Strings and thank you universe for keeping perfection like this available for us to make the world a happier place!!

He has done and experienced what the hard drugs and alcohol will do. His parents are recovering from drug addiction, his father died from a heron overdose, and his town destroyed by the opium epidemic. I think they will be okay as long as they find healthy ways to deal with the unnatural state of stardom. And I am 59 years old and have thought the same thing about not living long enough to see where these younger musician's journeys take them. But, not going to worry about it. I'm going to live in for each moment and fill my soul with the music they are giving us now.
Best band on the scene today. Four incredible musicians and then they add another with the fiddle. Billy’s been at the top of our playlists since before COVID, has his own “best of” playlist and is featured in several of our videos. He’s just a monster and still young.

I was lucky enough to have lived in Buena Vista for a while. We had spring water running across a trough on the back porch. My sister was born there in 1940. Billy fits right in with those good old days.
