I have not visited your channel for quite a while. Coming back, great to see you are helping less experienced without being condescending or making owner feel inadequate. Good job
I understand this. You read and watch videos and it all seems clear. Then applying it in the real world you second guess yourself. Having someone with vast knowledge help you apply what you have learned to your specific situation is so very helpful. Very interesting video. This is a great project.
Well done you guys! What I enjoyed was being able to diagnose while you did. I hit the top two right off the bat. The water source and too aggressive on the changes. I learned that stuff from watching you guys for the last 3 years. This was great.
🐟Fabulous visit with a new fishkeeper! Many beginners think they are doing the right thing by "super cleaning" their pet fish's home. Good job explaining everything to her. And, giving her a source, your video, to watch and rewatch as she goes along in her fishkeeping journey!!!👍
Nice visit and explaining without pointing the finger of blame. More of here is your problem(s) and how to address them. The free gifts help people know what to get. Looking forward to more in this series.
Melissa - thank you for sharing your tanks and beautiful bettas with us! John and Lisa - thank you foe helping others! It was a great learning experience for everyone. PS- couldnt help bit giggle as John was seriously explaining things and Lisa's camera slowly pans over to the kitty! 😊🥰
These are great series for the new (or even experienced) aquarium hobbyist. I praise this woman for having the desire to make her tanks better for her fish, and reaching out to KGT. I’ve seen people so afraid to ask questions at pet stores, plus many pet stores employees are often kids who don’t know anything, nor do they care, as it’s just a paycheck for them. And because of early failures , too many people quit this wonderful hobby. I really hope this young lady finds success with her tanks and continues in the hobby.
I was doing the same thing with water changes (though my tank was slightly more stocked). I was doing weekly 50% water changes and usually got a bacterial bloom as a result, but it would disappear after a little while so I thought "it's fine. My tank produces nitrates, so I'm pretty sure my tank is cycled. The fish probably like the cleaner water too." Meanwhile, I had trouble keeping anything other than zebra danios alive for longer than a few months. I reduced the amount of my water changes, added live plants, and now things are great.
Great series, looking forward to seeing them all. You can clearly see that this woman loves her aquariums. This series will not only help the people you are visiting, but also the viewers who may be in the same boat.
Great video! I'm glad you helped this lady and any else who could use the help including myself! Thank you for making this video. I would love to see more like this.
hey kgtropicals i have been watching you guys for awhile now and just wanted to thank you for all the great information you provide. i was into aquariums for quite awhile until i accidently killed my fish. i was devastated and wanted to give it all up. i watched a few of your videos to try getting through it and i was right back in the game. you 2 have taught me so much i didn't know, or realize about fish aquariums. just wanted to thank you guys so much. if it wasn't for you i would have quit. At first i wasn't going to comment but i just watched the video where you guys talked about the person who emailed you about the cat playing in the bag and thought i would send you guys a good comment. there's enough negativity in the world right now. thanks again you guys. keep it up. PS Lisa thank you for making me a betaholic. 🙂take care guys
I loved this video. You both are very inspiring to me and I love the positive energy that you are giving people. Fish keeping is so relaxing and fun. Thank you for doing this video.
I remember cycling my first fish tank! It was so stressful because in the aquarium hobby sometimes less is more! It’s a great way to learn patience for sure.
These are the coolest videos. We get to still learn things (or be reminded of things) and see someone get help they need and be made so happy all at the same time.
Great video. You never learn about keeping planted tanks unless you've had an emergency that requires you to neglect your tanks--it's amazing how tanks thrive when you leave them alone!
So glad you guys could help I'm so glad you could help find out what the issue was and hands up to the amount of water changes thanks again glad I emailed 😊
That’s very interesting to watch and see how these people are living This requires a lot of work and dedication to this job since USA is huge Well done
This is great! Seeing this real life application is affirming in so very many ways because killing fish is so distressing and goes against every fiber in our being. We love our fish and want them to do well and we try hard to be perfect, then things start slipping and we panic, we try harder and push the slip into a Pratt fall and our perfect snowflake turns into an avalanche. Been there, done that, and still learning! I am 66 years old and got into fish keeping at about 1st grade with goldfish from the school fair. It has been a life long love affair made up of mostly joy but also some bitter tears and just like any long term relationship, you have to learn from your mistakes and be brave enough to keep going when the going gets tough. I have had a lot of time to dream about the goals of my hobby and the gauge on the fuel tank of my life is getting closer and closer to E, so I either have to jump ship or go for it. After much contemplation, I have decided to go for it and will be setting up my 125, 90, and 75 gallon as soon as I get some floor repairs done. It’s always something. 😂. My funds are limited but if careful and creative I can do it and my potential fish choices are to the moon and back. I will be calling on your store products and your expertise to bring these tanks to life and find myself excited at journey. Thank you for helping with your shows.😅
This series is so good! I remember having problems with my tank back when i moved to Tacoma WA because their tap water was pre-treated to be alkaline. Testing the tap water is super important!
When I saw the test from her water sourced I audibly went, WOW! I know it’s out there so don’t get me wrong but I for am checking my water now. I love how you are passing along information and it’s being shown right in front of her what it means, where it comes from and how to deal with it. Even mentioned yeah betta like being alone but 1 fish in a tank is a long time to try to achieve a cycle if it ever does with the water changes. I know it happens and when the situation fits, it’s like a light switch and before you know it, a clean clear aquarium is no longer just a fish story. Way to be and show how never be afraid to do enough. Love you guys, stay happy and healthy my friends!!! 😊❤
These video’s are a blast. I love seeing people’s aquariums. If there was only a way to know which of my neighbors have aquariums. It was be a blast to see them
Looks like a sanded tank with possibly some dirt (or some form of aquasoil) in the bottom. Maybe some of that ammonia is coming out of the substrate. As per your guidance, don't overclean. Does she have enough light? It would be interesting to see the nitrate levels once the tank settles down.
This is a great next step from the traditional “how to” video. It is good to see actual people and their tanks and move past the theoretical to the practical! Well done!
Sponge filters and RO top offs are all I ever do unless I see a mess like food that wasn't eaten or I need to clean the front internal glass for a clear view into the tank. I'm breeding shrimp and LF white clouds. I try to use a lot of floating plants and house plants to eat up the waste.
I missed it, did she say where her soil came from? Because a single fish should not produce that much ammonia without nitrifying bacteria keeping pace. It should take weeks to build up that much ammonia even without a single water change. My bet is that something is off with the soil and it is leaching ammonia into the water. If there is preexisting ammonia (as fertilizer) or decomposing organic material it would be much more likely a source than the single fish that is fed 3 pellets every other day. Please note that to convert ammonia NH4 to nitrate then nitrite (NO3) requires oxygen. Bacteria might not be able to access the ammonia in the soil where the conditions are low in oxygen. Thankfully the new plants should house nitrifying bacteria and the roots might also help in aerating the soil and removing excess nitrogenous waste from the soil.
Keep spreading the joy of aquariums please. My first guess was the source of ammonia/ammonium issue is the substrate. It was hard to see the substrate and plants in the video. Was it dirt capped with sand substrate? If so maybe that is the root cause. Consistent with starting a tank with active aquasoil or organic soil. Large water changes and cleaning the decor would have minimal effect on ammonium levels. The brand new tank having sky high ammonium and the one running for a while less would also be consistent with starting a tank with ammonium rich soil. If this is the case Melissa can restart the aquariums using only a thin layer of sand and move past this issue. Hope that helps.
I would love a collaboration of both you and father fish ... you could share your experiences and point of views on the hobby ... i bet it could be so beneficial for viewers and hobbyist or fish lovers ...
*Did you see the first episode of the Boxes Of Water Series? We visited a TRUE American Hero!!* ruclips.net/video/0TikVp-Oyfo/видео.html
Can you please do a female betta fish care guide.
I have not visited your channel for quite a while. Coming back, great to see you are helping less experienced without being condescending or making owner feel inadequate. Good job
She's killing it with kindness... great seeing you guys help her and teach her.
The tanks looks so so much nicer with live plants and less plastic toys, I hope this great lady succeed so she can keep some tetras again.
so nice to see you doing this. the lady clearly cares about her fish but just needed that little bit of help.. hats off to you both

This is such a great concept. It’s like Bar Rescue for Fish Tanks except you’re not an asshole. I’ll watch every single one of these you do. 😂
Was waiting on what Mrs Lisa was going to say about the algae on the plants
me too!
Maybe the snails?
What a wonderful video. Love it.
That's great that you gave some great tips and advice that we can all learn from. This was a fun video!
John it is fantastic to see you and Lisa going around and helping out new Fish keepers stay in the hobby
🐠🐠🐠🐠
In my experience cycling multiple tanks a test kit and patience are the most important things.
Nice visit and explaining without pointing the finger of blame. More of here is your problem(s) and how to address them. The free gifts help people know what to get. Looking forward to more in this series.
