When I was 14 in 1987, all I wanted to do was skateboard after school and listen to music. I definitely wasn't planning a mass killing.
I was at the arcades and rec centers
I'm a little older than you but not by much . The world is not the one we grew up in it is messed up! I remember the 1980s as well be glad we had good times And times were normal. Kids today are insane. Also be happy you did grow up back then.
Most kids now don't go/play outside nearly as much if at all. Many parents are scared but also many times both parents are at work.. My Buddy explained it to me, when I was irritated with the next door townhouse noise level.
We had quality TV holding us captive: MTV when all it did was music vids.... and....... well that was about it.
I was still a swimmer I my dad's sack
Seen so many comments questioning how a 14 yo was in possession of a rifle. I owned a rifle when I was 10, used for hunting. When I was 12, I was given a shotgun. also for hunting. I NEVER carried either one out of the house except for the purpose of hunting, and then with adult supervision. Why? Because form an early age I was taught gun safety. Even when bullied at school did using a gun ever cross My mind....Why? Because I was taught to respect others and their lives. It is NOT a gun problem...it is people have no respect for lives other than their own...
I am now in My 60s, have owned guns since I was 10...and have never had a single gun threaten someone.
You are speaking about a time long past. Today they have active shooter drills beginning in kindergarten, that go on for the entire time they are in school. Because their lives are in threat of being taken at any moment. From the 2000-01 to 2021-22 school years, there were 1,375 school shootings at public and private elementary and secondary schools, resulting in 515 deaths and 1,161 injuries. A happy childhood no longer exists.
Amen!
Exactly the same way I was raised. My Dad had a loaded pistol in every room and never once did I toach them. But I was raised around them and taught about them. I had my own rifle and shotgun at 12 and never once thought about hurting someone with them. I raised my kids the same way and also teaching my grandkids about gun safety.
I had rifles and shotguns when I was about 12 yoa or so. I used to have a shotgun in my pickup like so many did.. I didn't have a driver's license. We lived pretty far out.
Ok, so you’re some kind of special. 🙄
Way to pay attention to your kid, mom and dad. Where'd the gun come from?
In small town America??? Hunting and shooting start at an early age.
Access to a firearm is no surprise.

Cops didn't say there was a gun. "What appeared to be a gun."
My father owned many guns while I was growing up… and he also didn’t pay a lot of attention to me… he was a working commercial pilot… it never once occurred to me to steal and go shoot up my school… this is not necessarily a “parent” problem… it’s our society’s problem…. And their son is dead. Ever heard of empathy?

I am thinking he might not even have had a weapon. They just kept saying "what appeared like a gun." It will be sad if they shot an unarmed kid.
But no surprise.
Isn't it time that the reasons behind children wanting to go and shoot people in a school are examined. Too often children are bullied and isolated by their peers and sometimes teachers/school staff too because they are "different" do not fit the mould, this starts in elementary/primary schools and goes right through, only getting more subtle and unpleasant as bullies become more skilled.. They may struggle academically, are not sporty etc and have few, if any friends. I was in the sports teams at school, was in the top class for academics, was Deputy Head Girl and had a circle of friends, I never feared going to school or dread it either. I cannot imagine what it is like for some children going in to school knowing they are likely to be called names, laughed at or ignored, having no one to sit with at lunch, never being picked as someones partner when a teacher tells children to work in a pair or a group. Imagine facing that day in day out, year in year out and add to that the cruelty of social media. It is time the school systems in the US and UK were properly examined and children who always seem on their own given the proper support they need. Bullying in UK schools has NEVER been addressed or eradicated - I'm guessing the same is true in the US.
You are so right. Sad when someone does not fit in, then the"pack mentality " starts as more join in the bullying. Teachers need to be more aware of what is going on and put a firm stop to it. Even a rabbit will finally fight back.
because their parents are GOP
Getting picked on in school is nothing new. It has been going on since the beginning of time and will continue to go on. It's part of growing up. Sad but true. It happens. There isn't much you can do to prevent it. Kids brains are not fully developed, they don't understand the gravity of their actions.
@@Nosferata138 It is much worse now with social media - kids can't get away from it at the end of the school day. Home is not the soft place to land at the end of a difficult school day. Bullies can develop a huge following through social media. It is difficult for a bullied child to ignore social media. Sadly the bullies rule the roost - school bullies continue to bully into adulthood. I think it is much worse than "being picked on" - children's self esteem/self worth is destroyed, they under achieve, become depressed, many self harm, some contemplate or attempt/commit suicide, they become vulnerable to being abused in later life. Many "take" the bullying, until they can't any longer, especially boys snap and yes because their brain is not fully developed do not think through their actions or at least feel they have no other option - rather like a cornered animal. I am not making excuses for school shooters, I just think as a society we need to do and can do so much more, but it takes money. A large team of professionally trained counsellors/therapists in every school where all children have regular sessions so vulnerable children are not highlighted , getting parents much more involved with the school with sessions to help parents identify warning signs. People have babies, but are then left to work out how to parent, some are successful, some not so much.
Thank you for sharing this. A quick anecdotal note, I have a child on the autism spectrum and am so fortunate and blessed that they received, among a variety of support, social skills education and interactive training. There's so much that they, and I, learned from the classes and I will always be an advocate and proponent of social skills education and training for all students throughout their schooling.
Social interaction norms and behaviors, along with encounters with law enforcement, are not taught and modeled. What was once engrained in children by parents has become the exception and it's no surprise to see things like this happening with more regularity.
It's not a priority for citizens, schools, and/or elected officials.

What to do about these sorts of kids? When I was in high school back in the '60s we had a foreign exchange student from Germany I was buddies with. He was a weird looking kid, way over six foot tall, not athletic, glasses, Boris Johnson style hair, goofy, but very popular. Why popular? He said one thing German parents did was make sure their kids learned to play music - he played the piano - and they took dance lessons as kids. So all kids could get together, dance and have a jam session. They all had that in common. They also were enrolled in classes for other interests - chess, sports, archery, art, anything that would be a shared interest with other kids. That way nobody was a wallflower and they all would find a group they could hang around with that shared their interests. So all the kids knew how to dance, play the piano or the guitar, they were all bilingual, they were all good at other things as well.

Of course, people are going to tell you everybody acts differently in moments of crisis. But for some additional context, this reaction behavior was specifically addressed in the book, "Columbine" by Dave Cullen. It's achingly described. The parents are moved to a gathering point waiting late till the evening. (Cell phones weren't so prevalent.) Surviving children were spread out everywhere inside and outside of the school. Those surviving children escorted out of the school by SWAT were gathered in a different area and lists were compiled. As parents waited and heard the names of their surviving children announced or were united - those parents were overjoyed and also embraced the parents standing there whose names were not yet accounted for. The later it got, the dwindling crowds were the parents of non-survivors.
In this video, I am imagining parents might have confirmation already and the first thing they verify with other parents is YES their child is alive as well. Having witnessed the news coverage of Columbine and the numerous shootings since then, having read the book on Columbine, I can assure you this 1:15 second video caught a staggering amount of emotional footage which runs the gamut.
