    I’m just worried about the building foundations in buildings like this after all that saltwater intrusion, especially in the long-term. Saltwater is an incredibly corrosive force. That horrific building collapse 1.5 years ago on Miami Beach was caused by untreated corrosion from saltwater exposure in the building’s foundation. So I’m concerned about what that storm surge might do to building foundations years down the road from now with all that saltwater exposure.

      Exactly just because structures standing does mean there business operable or livable I would believe most are not!! They will have to pass housing & business codes! The foundations & corrosion will deem these buildings not operable for living or for business will be torn down!!

    It looks like the bottom floor walls were designed to break away and let the water pass through to protect the rest of the structure. The biggest concern will be future rebar corrosion as salt water entered small, normal cracks in the concrete. So long as they monitor it with routine inspections and make proper repairs as needed it should be fine for the long term. The catch is that they must do more inspections!

      The hurricane windows and patio doors are amazingly strong against wind and even debris impact. Nothing can really withstand the storm surge, so they make the bottom floor walls able to break away and let the water flow through so it does less damage to the structure. It's high time Florida get serious with building codes and the threat of more powerful hurricanes. Stop doing things on the cheap. It's the 3rd most populous state in the nation and it collects revenue like its the 45th and has crappy roads and bridges to show for it.

    • @grayrabbit2211
      @grayrabbit2211 2 года назад +1

      The building is still standing. It did what it was designed to do - - protect its occupants. We don't expect cars do go through an accident without some damage. These buildings went through far more force than any car accident could be produced, and yet they're still standing and can be reused with some repair. Can't say the same for a car after a major accident.
      For reference, the building in the video was built in the early 1980s and was definitely not built to the highest quality. Hurricane codes in Florida didn't start until after Hurricane Andrew 1992 and further with the 2004 Hurricane season. This building didn't have any of those codes in its design, yet it's still standing.
      The roads and bridges here are in superior shape compared to many northern states and did exactly what they should do. As I type this, every single bridge and causeway in Lee County (Fort Myers, Sanibel, Captiva, Fort Myers Beach, Pine Island, Matlacha, Bonita Beach, Lover's Key) is open for traffic. Some of these were rebuilt in as little as 3 days.
