Very interesting to see such formality in making beans on toast! normally you go to a mate's house and he makes it for you without even looking what he is doing, as it is such a normal part of British life.
Bless lol asa British grandma it’s so funny and sweet to see someone trying beans lol. It’s something we have from little kids so no one by your age wouldn’t know the taste. I was shouting ring pull can though. Enjoy watching you seem like a nice person. Regards from the Uk
A great, quick, cheap, meal that is the mainstay of most British teenagers and students, and 'go-to' for life. I melt the cheese on the toast under the grill (broiler), before serving the beans on top.
“Toaster oven” - cute! Notice the way he eats - American style - cutting with the knife, putting the knife down, transferring the fork to his right hand etc. Different to how we do in the UK and Europe.
Who ever taught him fork skills needs a slap lol I had an American friend come over to the UK and they used the fork like that cut everything up then used the fork in right hand to scoop lol
@@PatrickAtkinFineArt It's the way all north Americans eat. In Europe we keep both knife and fork in our hands, and use the knife to push food onto the prongs of the fork. That's not the way they do it in USA.
I’m less than 2 mins in but usually find it hilarious watching you guys from the US try our stuff. The last US lady who I watched try to make tea, cracked me the hell up.
I was fascinated to see the way you held the fork when cutting the toast , quite amusing .that aside it looked really good . I usually have mine double decked . Have a good Christmas Joel , best wishes from the U.K. 🇬🇧
I’m sure there are some videos on here showing how countries use cutlery differently. Something to try next, using the fork the way it’s used in the UK. Guarantee it’ll feel odd for someone from the US
@@JeBa198 wack the bread in the toaster put the beans in the microwave for a couple of minutes jobs a gooden wack a bit of cheese on then we've all of a sudden got posh beans on toast 😂
my American parents always ate this. Don't know where the idea came from. They used cold beans & mayo instead of butter. I thought it was a Depression Era food.
As a child, we had beans on toast whenever we went to a cafe. I even remember my dad and me eating beans on toast in the kitchen while my sister was being born upstairs! For me it's the ultimate comfort food, especially when sick e.g. with a cold.
Please don't take any aspect of this video and think it's typical American. 😅 We're currently watching on the TV and my husband just said "damn. This is giving me anxiety" It's entertaining at least.
Oh my word beans on toast a British staple. So funny to see you making it for the first time, when we eat it all the time. Great to see you’re enjoying British food. Love the video.
You should try them with HP brown sauce on mate! I've really enjoyed watching your videos this past year, your intellect is sharp, your heart is warm and your delivery is refreshingly sincere. Brilliant stuff, bloody well done chap!
You won't get a better compliment than what D J Morgan has just said, Joel. If I were you I would cut and paste it somewhere really permanent. It sums up your work here perfectly. Do treasure it.
I like to heat the beans more slowly for a longer time until the sauce is thick. You get less of a sloppy mess on the plate. Dark toast is definitely better for this! Have it for supper.
The famous American Knife and fork holding technique. I've spent loads of time in the States and never failed to be fascinated by how uncomfortable their silverware handling work appears to be. Nice video on such a simple subject though.
That is funny because to us the British way of eating always holding the knife and fork looks rude. I was always taught to only hold your knife as long as it is needed to cut, put it down and eat with your right hand and to keep your left hand firmly on your lap. If we ate near my grandmother as children, for the little ones she would sit next to them and keep their left hand in their lap with her hand (obviously she had already finished eating). I find it VERY shocking to see people eat with their cutlery always in both their hands. No. Just…no.
Never seen beans cooked in a frying pan before. Random. We usually microwave them or put them in a saucepan. Also a good idea to shake the can before pouring. Mixes up the tomato sauce. I love beans on toast but I never put butter on it. Increases the calories unnecessarily for what is, on the whole, quite a healthy meal. Good effort though.
in the UK we use the knife and fork "European" style as we do not transfer the fork to the opposite hand but keep it in the left not swapping out, knife in right and fork in left cut and eat. the American style looks odd to UK eyes
@@privatecitizen5264 OK, I'll take your word for it but I have seen in American restaurants (in Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York, the state as well as the city) that the locals cut all the food on the plate in one go then spend the rest of their meal stabbing the food with their forks.
Beans on toast is my go-to comfort food, always with grated cheddar on top. When I had tin of beans in the USA it came as a surprise to find the they were in some kind of brown bbq style sauce. Watching this video, I never realised 'making' beans on toast was such a complex and long-winded process. As everyone is commenting on it, the cutlery use also seems complex and long-winded; very awkward.
It's ridiculous how much I've just enjoyed watching you cook beans on toast and how pleased I was that you did actually like them 😅 I have loved watching your videos this year, taking the chance to see familiar things anew through your eyes; you have an open, enquiring mind and a kind heart, and I wish you and your family the warmest wishes for Christmas 💙
My dad used to make this for me when I was a kid. I don't know why but I always eat the beans off the toast first and then eat the soggy toast last, which is actually my favourite part 😂 I still have it every now and then.
Just seen this video! And as a Brit who loves and Beens on toast lunch, I’m so glad that you lived this! One tip when having cheese. Don’t just put the cheese on as you are about to serve. Put the cheese on before grilling. The cheese will then melt in!
I know. it looks so clumsy, and that seems to be the way a lot of Americans mishandle them. Why put the knife down? It's a tool for manipulating the food into the fork, not just for cutting!
I think with the butter it's partially the ingredients. I moved from the UK to the US almost a decade ago, American butter seems exceptionally rock hard, it didn't take long for me to switch to an imported Irish butter for a consistency I'm more used to. From my experience taking the butter out of the fridge earlier, the imported butter will become softer before the American butter does too. As for the knife/fork usage it always amuses me that every American I know here will mostly cut with the knife, put it down and swap the fork over to the other hand to eat.
I have noticed that many Americans cannot seem to use cutlery properly... Joel looks as if he has never used a fork and holds it very awkwardly indeed! LOL! But its so easy to be 'picky' and considering it was his first attempt, the boy did good 👍 😊
I was about to say the same thing. Surely it's easier to eat holding both the knife and fork instead of constantly putting the knife down. It looks most odd.
I was searching for this comment. Watching him holding the fork like that then putting the knife down and switchig hands just to pick the knife back up to put more beans on and then do it all again was some so painful to watch, the actual beans on toast was good but americans really need to learn how to use cutlery would save them so much time, effort and just looking akward
wait wait wait wait wait. Is that really what you guys think is an American thing 🤣 it’s too funny watching him use the fork and knife because I’m American and I’ve never used mine like that, and my family doesn’t either 😂
This is so funny. Using a frying pan to heat the beans. And using a tin opener on a ring pull Tin. Thank you so much for making me laugh I needed it. Good job 👍🏻
We just call it a toaster. Great attempt, although I would have melted the cheese into the beans in the pan, but you’ve inspired me to have beans on toast for lunch. It’s been ages since I’ve eaten this deliciousness!
JP, I love how you treated this as some sort of gourmet meal lol. "Perfect beans to toast ratio!' Lol. It's nice to see someone so excited by an easy comfort meal that most of us take for granted! Next up, a full English breakfast......for Kings! Great review as always, and happy Christmas to you and yours!
Eat it using your cutlery like an English person it’s far easier, glad you enjoyed it, my favourite is 1/2 tin of warmed baked beans on toast with a poached egg on top. Loving your channel.
Beans on toast is so versatile as you now know you can add things to it to enhance or just eat it plain and simple. So glad you got to try this and hope that your making a cuppa is as enjoyable too. Wishing you all the best for tomorrow (Christmas Day) and for 2022.
Try adding a little Worcestershire sauce to the beans as they cook, plus a dash of salt and pepper. For added fiber content, have over some multigrain toast.
You can live off beans on toast when you are away at Uni - I know, I did. lol. Add a soft poached egg on top for an extra protein hit. Baked beans can be part of breakfast when served in a full English (bacon - real bacon not what you call bacon in the US, sausage, fried eggs, mushrooms, fried bread), on toast would normally be a lunch.
You really make me smile! Beans on toast is absolutely fantastic, quick and easy lunch. Merry Christmas Joel, hope it's a good one for you. Stay safe and well. Hugs from across the pond! 👌🙏🤶🎅🎄🇬🇧
So interesting to watch someone eat beans on toast for the first time!! Kind of knew you would like it!! I have this quite a lot but with just a touch of black pepper on top rather than the cheese!! Great reaction and Merry Christmas!!
Everything was perfectly done, the beans cool down quickly so I would just pour the beans directly on to the toast to save time. Good tip is to leave the butter out so it’s easier to spread. A yummy addition would be a few dashes of Worcestershire Sauce on the beans 😋 this dish is a perfect lunch on a cold day.
Im not keen on baked beans as they come out of the tin, not enough flavour. for years I added a good squirt of ketchup to spice them up a bit but for the last couple of years Ive replaced that with one or 2 tablespoons of sweet chilli sauce instead of the ketchup. Niiice
Or a touch of Curry. Yum! My favourite…..I fry up bacon pieces, and when they’re done drop in a tin of Hienz ‘Ham Baked Beans’. I let them bubble for a minute, then eat them with Hot buttered toast. Yes US, Butter your toast when its golden brown an HOT!!
I believe the beans are already cooked when they're sold in the shops, the purpose of heating them is just to make them warm rather than to cook them, you only really need to heat the beans until the sauce starts to boil, so it doesn't matter the temperature or time you do it for. It's a dish you'd struggle to mess up once you know
I'm from Scotland and we have baked beans on toast with cheese, the way you cooked it in your video is the way that I personally would cook it. Also you can add some diced cured smoked bacon to the beans and cheese , which is absolutely delicious.
That’s how we cook in a power cut when microwave doesn’t work because of power cut. It’s much less time consuming to put in it in microwave safe bowl for 2 minutes than wait for 5 minutes
@@NicholasJH96 you need a plastic lid over beans whether it's a microwavable plate or not. They explode all over we use a bowl with a plastic lid ontop but not sealed so the steam can escape.
Hilarious watching you swap the saucepan for a frying pan to cook those beans, Joel😂 You had it right first time round... But it worked, I have to say! They cooked🤷🏼♂️👍🏼
Good job son. You quickly get to know how you like your beans on toast, then you smash them out without even thinking. A brew is essential with this meal.
That wasn't burnt toast, that was well done toast, and just how I like it. Btw, your butter was hard because its been in the fridge, next time, maybe get the butter out about half an hour before. You're a very nice young man Joel, and I really like your videos.
I feel a little guilty for giggling at this video 🤭 I often forget that the whole world doesn't eat what we do here in the UK. Joel, you did a great job with the beans on toast xxx Edit: Everyone has this differently. Obviously there's beans and toast, some like butter and some don't. I put Marmite in my beans and my mom uses Worcestershire sauce. I put cheese in the beans and my sister puts in on the top. It can be as basic or full of extras as you'd like xxx
Worcestershire with lots of black pepper! I lived on campus when I studied in the UK; beans were served with every meal. Haven't eaten beans on toast since. Just can't face them.
Great presentation! One thing I always do is pre warm the plate in the oven. I hate hot food on cold plates, maybe this is just me? Glad you enjoyed it all, Merry Christmas everyone...
I always thought baked beans on toast was more universal. A fact I have just seen. The UK eats more cans of baked beans than the rest of the world combined. 1.5 million cans of Heinz Beanz are sold every day in the UK. That's just one brand.
That was brilliant! Never have i been more amused watching someone eat beans on toast! My tip for next time, cook the beans for a bit longer so the sauce thickens up a bit more!
Here's how I make beans on toast: Put the beans in a saucepan, add a squirt of brown sauce and a knob of butter. Heat them until the beans start turning into mush (overcook them), then pour them over buttered hot toast. (add a few flakes of chili to the beans if you like a bit of warmth) Cheesy Beanos: Same as above but pour the beans over cheese on toast,
Not everyone does it but you could add a touch of butter to the beans while they heat up or a dash of milk that can make a touch more juice while cooking them. I add the dash of milk to mine.. I'm glad you enjoyed them.
Wonderful lol, watching your antics always brightens my day. This one reminds me of when my own boys were teenagers and made culinary attempts in the kitchen, something that didn’t happen too often! Beans on toast is something most Brits might have for their tea (the meal, not a cuppa) but not so sure about the cheese.
Joel, can I just say I *love* your mum's cooking. I'm guessing she's good because you've never needed to learn the difference between a pot and a pan. Two words my young friend.. Gordon Ramsay. Go for it 😉👍
Oh yes, what a good idea.....I would be interested to see what you think of Gordon Ramsay when he is trying to 'turn around' the failing restaurants., though I cannot remember the title of the series.... 🤔
Great effort, my kids love beans on toast they put 1 slice of toast buttered then add half the can of bean then put another slice of toast on top as if making a sandwich. Add the rest of the beans with white cheddar cheese and mix in brown sauce ( like ketchup) We also have tinned spaghetti on toast, it’s the same method with out the cheese though. It’s a quick filling snack and it’s also comfort food than if all else fails you can have something on toast and it’ll never let you down. My youngest boy tops his beans off with a poached or fried egg.
The lad did good! Great dinner for anyone and also cheap student food!! I had this in the 1970's for my lunch alternately with Tomato soup for me "home dinner" when not staying at school for lunch. Still enjoy it on occasion also spaghetti hoops on toast.
Good healthy food, cheap and easy to cook - the saviour of many an impecunious British student! You can freeze baked beanz as well, remove them from the tin and just put them in a freezer pot - about half a tin is usually more than enough for me on toast.
Make a bowl of heated beans with melted cheese mixed in, have buttered toast with a Thin layer of marmite or similar spread to dunk into beans anytime day or night very filling. Great vid Jps

I'm gonna make a bacon and egg sarny now
See how my guy holds a fork 😂
Thinking exactly the same thing. With egg on top and sausage on the side. Yummers.
Me too got a rumble in my tummy I'm going to make beans on toast now 😋😋😋
Very interesting to see such formality in making beans on toast! normally you go to a mate's house and he makes it for you without even looking what he is doing, as it is such a normal part of British life.
Never tried that. Sounds great.
@@PatrickAtkinFineArt Slap his mum? :o

The American cutlery style is very strange.
Watching Americans trying to use cutlery is always amusing.
I’m sure there are some videos on here showing how countries use cutlery differently. Something to try next, using the fork the way it’s used in the UK. Guarantee it’ll feel odd for someone from the US
I am American and I can tell you that is not the usual way we hold a fork. I think that is his own particular style. It does look kind of awkward.
I thought that too. I've never seen anyone stick a fork vertically into food to cut it with the knife.....
I never new that making beans on toast would take 18 minutes 😂

You’re a star, Joel. Glad you enjoyed your meal. You must qualify for the honorary Brit title by now! Have a great Christmas 🎄
my American parents always ate this.
I’d heard how weird Americans use cutlery but I’d never seen it. 😂
😂
Yeah weird as
Please don't take any aspect of this video and think it's typical American. 😅 We're currently watching on the TV and my husband just said "damn. This is giving me anxiety" It's entertaining at least.
cack handed, needs to use the knife in one and the fork in the other.
Bizarre!
Never have I been so excited about seeing someone making beans on toast 😂 Have a great Xmas Joel!
HP sauce is no longer British sadly 😒
You won't get a better compliment than what D J Morgan has just said, Joel. If I were you I would cut and paste it somewhere really permanent. It sums up your work here perfectly. Do treasure it.
I like to heat the beans more slowly for a longer time until the sauce is thick. You get less of a sloppy mess on the plate. Dark toast is definitely better for this! Have it for supper.
I think that's why there is a lot of sauce. It'll reduce as you simmer it so they have to make sure there's enough.
I like sludgy beans, too. Not everyone does.
I’ve never seen beans on toast look so complicated but what a wee sweetheart he is 😊🌸
The famous American Knife and fork holding technique. I've spent loads of time in the States and never failed to be fascinated by how uncomfortable their silverware handling work appears to be. Nice video on such a simple subject though.
It's like nobody taught them how to use a knife and fork 😅
@@alistairgalt6529 drives me nuts, I had to stop looking at him and just listen instead.
No. Just…no.
@@maryannebrown2385 How strange never heard of that before...How can a knife and fork look rude?
The American way is ridiculous.
Oh god the pan and can opener was one if the best things I've ever seen 🤣thank you so much
That was great - opening a ring pull tin with a tin opener is normally performed drunk.
Olivia Hamm Should use reduced sugar beans if you're worried about making it healthier. Butter is healthier than sugar fyi...
The butter kind of acts like a barrier and stops the bread getting too soggy.
@@ticketyboo2456 they're disgusting though.
Butter. Essential x
@@ticketyboo2456 Reduced sugar beans are disgusting
in the UK we use the knife and fork "European" style as we do not transfer the fork to the opposite hand but keep it in the left not swapping out, knife in right and fork in left cut and eat. the American style looks odd to UK eyes
It was rather painful to watch Joel cut the toast,
This is not an American style... This kid just never learned to use a fork and knife.
It looked really awkward! I laughed out loud when he said "I haven't used this stove in a while..." I'm tipping 'a while' really means 'never'.
@@privatecitizen5264
OK, I'll take your word for it but I have seen in American restaurants (in Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York, the state as well as the city) that the locals cut all the food on the plate in one go then spend the rest of their meal stabbing the food with their forks.
Uncultured is the word 😂🤣😂
You're not the only one. That's how I'd eat it too :)
Just seen this video! And as a Brit who loves and Beens on toast lunch, I’m so glad that you lived this! One tip when having cheese. Don’t just put the cheese on as you are about to serve. Put the cheese on before grilling. The cheese will then melt in!
1: Takes butter out of fridge
2: "I don't know why it's so cold and hard"
🤣🤣🤣
Next we'll need to teach you how to use a knife and fork!
I know. it looks so clumsy, and that seems to be the way a lot of Americans mishandle them.
@@AndrewHalliwell Exactly. And so many Americans seem to swap the knife from one hand to the other....
It looks so awkward when Americans try to use cutlery 😳😁 Glad you enjoyed it Joel, very good attempt, 👍
I'm afraid in the UK now many youngsters don't know how to use a knife and fork as they don't sit-down now to proper family meals.
This is so funny. Using a frying pan to heat the beans. And using a tin opener on a ring pull Tin. Thank you so much for making me laugh I needed it. Good job 👍🏻
Oh bless his darling heart! This has made my day what a star X
Joel, you're so funny, heating the beans in a frying pan ☺️ Glad you liked it !
For a gourmet option (for like, dinner with future British parents-in-law) consider adding a sausage to the mix.
We just call it a toaster.
Great attempt, although I would have melted the cheese into the beans in the pan, but you’ve inspired me to have beans on toast for lunch. It’s been ages since I’ve eaten this deliciousness!
I thought "toaster oven" was so American!
We Americans also call a toaster, a toaster. Joel has misspoken. A toaster oven is another device entirely.

The thing is i dont like the toast to get soft with the beans on it so dip the toast in the beans like a soft egg!
For that little extra kick put some chilli powder in the beans! You made me smile discovering the humble beans on toast.

Absolutely, beans on toast with grated cheese and some black pepper, awesome easy meal.
I too add black pepper 👌
Everything was perfectly done, the beans cool down quickly so I would just pour the beans directly on to the toast to save time. Good tip is to leave the butter out so it’s easier to spread. A yummy addition would be a few dashes of Worcestershire Sauce on the beans 😋 this dish is a perfect lunch on a cold day.
I've gone far too gourmet with my beans on toast, Marmite on the toast, chopped onions and cheese mixed in while cooking, can't go back from that.
A poached egg on top is good..Had that for my Christmas lunch 😋😋😋
Marmite needed
I believe the beans are already cooked when they're sold in the shops, the purpose of heating them is just to make them warm rather than to cook them, you only really need to heat the beans until the sauce starts to boil, so it doesn't matter the temperature or time you do it for. It's a dish you'd struggle to mess up once you know
They are cooked so fine to eat cold - straight from the tin with a spoon when you are hungover. Not that I’m talking from experience or anything.

Here's how I make beans on toast:
Put the beans in a saucepan, add a squirt of brown sauce and a knob of butter. Heat them until the beans start turning into mush (overcook them), then pour them over buttered hot toast. (add a few flakes of chili to the beans if you like a bit of warmth)
Cheesy Beanos: Same as above but pour the beans over cheese on toast,
I also overcook them until they turn mushy and the sauce is super thick 😁👍 I hate when they're swimming in runny sauce 😳
Defo knob of butter in beans
@@lilih8478 you can heat them gently just until the sauce thickens and the beans are soft not mushy . usuing a gas hob mekes it easier .
Not everyone does it but you could add a touch of butter to the beans while they heat up or a dash of milk that can make a touch more juice while cooking them. I add the dash of milk to mine.. I'm glad you enjoyed them.
You were correct with your first choice of saucepan. Cuisine that made me smile.
