Sealand - The World's Smallest Nation?

- Just off the coast of England in the middle of the North Sea stands an abandoned World War II era fort. That fort is now the home to the Principality of Sealand (not to be confused with Seaworld), one of the most famous and fascinating MicroNations in the World.
This video condenses over fifty years of history into five minutes, telling the adventurous story of Paddy Roy Bates and his ambitious attempt at nation building.

As a recovering micronationalist, I must say that this is a really good video!
+MicroNation It was a relatively insignificant simulationist micronation called "new-empire", (I got pulled into the hobby by the whole Lovely - Danny Wallace thing) later joined and became president of a union called CIS. We were mostly focused around the simulationist mapping society of MCS, which I was at one point the technical admin for, and at one point the head cartographer.
Also ran a website called "MN forum list" which listed a tonne of micronations, measured their activity, etc etc.
I got addicted far too much to the hobby.

By the way, here is something you should ponder: How can countries stay as countries?
As you can see, Sealand is a place where the only residents are the royal family; quite a lonely place for a monarch, his wife, and his children. They are the only people that are able to have shelter; shelter is a hyperluxurious item equivalent to the Buckingham Palace in the UK. All visitors and commoners must sleep outside, regardless of the weather. Only the rich people get to bring tents. Also, the only building (the royal palace) is very weak as it doesn't have a foundation as it is very hard to dig through metal, and most foundations of buildings are made out of concrete. Therefore, one big wave could wash away the royal family into the North Sea. There are no guard rails, so tourists can fall to their death if they are not careful. Finally, the most important thing: How do the royal family get their food? As you can see, there is no soil to grow fruits or vegetables, and barely any space to raise livestock, so the only food the Sealanders can eat is fish, and they can only obtain plant-based calories from seaweed. Since the UN (and other countries) don't recognize Sealand, I doubt there will be constant food supply every month, and it is a very tough place for container ships to dock and unload resources for people to use. Therefore, if the country doesn't expand or create the food machine from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, the people could eventually starve to death (as the aquatic resources will eventually dry out over time). Expansion of Sealand is basically equivalent to a real-life Hero Wars game: the prince must conquer the weak and uninhabited islands first to gather resources and military personnel, each uninhabited island adds a little bit to the overall power as it climbs the pyramid and then it can start invading real countries. The small countries fall first; the big countries stay standing longer. However, one blunder from a (slightly) more powerful country could mean the end of Sealand. However, this Hero Wars game is not easy; Sealand is boxed between several powerful countries that could eliminate them with only 1 bomb and 1 match.
When you mentioned DJ/Radio-pirates at first, I thought it would be some kind of joke regarding the the actual conflicts, but the history of Sealand has seemed quite violent. Have DJ-pirates been a legitimate issue back in the day?

Theoretically, a country should be defined as having: a permanent population, clearly defined borders/land, and being able to run it's own affairs independently to that of other countries (i.e. able to defend it's territory from other nations and is not completely dependent on another nation to survive). Take the case of the post-Soviet "freeze zones". These were regions that were run independently, had a permanent population, and had a military or way of defending it's territory. The nation's that they were originally a part of were never able to retake these freeze zones.
