      Shows you how important having sovereignty over yourself and your property is. Where in places with governments who think everything you have is theirs... this is a serious problem. And so anyone with any form of wealth would rather leave than be forced into a Venzuala-like Marxism.

    Radio Luxembourg was an unsinkable pirate station. I was stationed in Germany from 1961-1964, and all Armed Forced Network offered on the radio was country and western, as that satisfied the tastes (?) of the majority of G.I.s at the time. Radio Luxembourg was aimed at British teenagers, but we young Americans loved the Rock and Roll format. Of course, we had to tolerate endless commercials by some Brit named Horace Batchelor, pushing tickets for the "poools," as he put it. Thanks to Radio Luxembourg, I was already a Beatles fan when I returned to the States in January, 1964, and was able to warn people about Beatlemania when it came to America the following month.

    The electronics supply house with whom I often dealt, County Supply, of Fleetwood, PA, often sold transmitter parts to "the Reverend Doctor Carl McIntire", a locally famous clandestine broadcaster, who pestered the NJ, DE, PA tri-state area for quite a few years; once launching a ship-based transmitter just outside of the three-mile territorial limit, near Cape May, New Jersey. "Radio Free America", if memory serves, came to be after McIntire's radio station, WXUR was refused license renewal.

    I will say that cookie dough is a volatile currency, especially in the winter season and in the presence of milk.
    You never have to worry about the presence of counterfeit currency, however, in it's present form it is subject to continual destruction by the people.
    One might call this a major drawback, however the state sees this as one of its charming characteristics. The national bank tends to see it as the former.

    From 1966 to 1967 I used to listen to Radio 270 of the coast near Scarborough. I was very young at the time but it was great fun.
    Interesting you mentioned the bombing of Liverpool which often claims to be the most bombed city other then London. This is not correct. My home town of Kingston upon Hull on the East Coast was the most bombed, other then London, with over 90% of its buildings receiving some damage from bombing. One of the reasons for this is that being on the East Coast Hull is easier to find then Liverpool, which required the Germans to fly over England and navigation was very primitive. They did have a navigation aid which used two radio beams to guide their bombers but we found a way to effect the signal so it lost accuracy. And the further it had to fly the less accurate is became.
    Later during the war a number of very seccessful decoy schemes were introduced around the country which made it even harder to find their target at night.

    In 78 the boarders weren't German, they were Dutch. I worked for the one that got taken hostage, whose brother-in-law had planned the takeover. The German ambassador negotiated the release, giving Bates the official recognition of one state. Last time I saw the mastermind brother-in-law, I was his driver for my last round of golf at his resort in the Algarve.

    If the United Nations sought to provide recognition of man made islands this would then justify the islands the Chinese created recently would it not? Is this a slippery slope?

    • @TheHistoryGuyChannel
      @TheHistoryGuyChannel  6 лет назад +43

      JAS Aerial that is actually part of the point. Man-made islands now represent more than just Maunsell forts. The point is that international law has to catch up with that fact.

    • @DoomerONE
      @DoomerONE 6 лет назад +17

      So curiously if they rule against the man made islands created by the Chinese that could potentially remove the micronation status of Sealand. That is a fascinating puzzle. Thank you for this very useful video sir.

    • @TheHistoryGuyChannel
      @TheHistoryGuyChannel  6 лет назад +30

      JAS Aerial the two might not have the same status. But that is all the more reason to establish international law on the matter.

    • @michael931
      @michael931 5 лет назад +11

      The UN already ruled against the Chinese Islands.

    • @papajoe2347
      @papajoe2347 5 лет назад +23

      JAS Aerial you could argue that the Chinese artificial islands are an invasion of Vietnamese/Philippine territorial waters

    Very cool, History Guy! For many years, Israelis had a rock station offshore called "The Voice of Peace" which was finally scuttled by it's owner, an IDF officer turned "peacenik", Hebrew for "pinko or leftist". I remember living in Israel and looking forward to six PM when "Desiderata" was read on a daily basis, ahhh, memories!

    This is a great item, never knew anything about micronations, only the pirate radiostaions at sea (The Netherlands: Radio Veronica) back in the 60s & 70s. Millenials should know that their streaming music services, where almost any music can be listened to, comes from brave people 50 years back that stood up against the mass.
    2:00 I remember that the Battle of Britain came down to just mere days since the Britains were totally down on resources and had a handful of operational airplanes left? The Germans gave up just a little too soon, not knowing victory was so close.

    You should do a video on the British pirate radio ships of the 1960s and 1970s (Radio Caroline, Radio Nordsee International, Swinging Radio England, etc.)
    Also, there is an operational data center on (in?) Sealand.

    Hey History Guy - love your content! Have you heard of the WWII bomber (B-24 or B-25) that crashed during bad weather into Sharp Top Mountain in Bedford County, VA during the war? I'd like to know more details if you think it's interesting enough for an episode. The crew, or course, was killed. The wreck is still on the mountain. I live in the area so it's a piece of local history. Keep up the great work!
