Think about how in the future there could be an illegal space port on a cloaked asteroid which would act as the tortuga of the space age. So cool, almost sounds like a good location for a sci-fi story...

@@tumei1851 Too bad you can't cloak anything in space, energy emissions of any kind would give it away, not to mention anyone travelling to/from there. Still, there's more than enough room for SPACE COPS/COAST GUARD, a genre of sci-fi I find sadly lacking in output.

It depends on what you mean by "helping the Earth". Helping poorer nations? Yes, it will help. Stopping climate change? Well, it's complicated. If there is a reasonable alternative - some current power holders will most likely switch, unless it is too expensive in the short term. But what is most likely is that current billionaires will just expand into space, while leaving the state of the earth production the same, reaping the monetary benefits from both.

As a biomedical researcher I'm optimistic about visionary and costy ideas such as asteroid mining given how quickly technology has changed in the last years. In biology, the costs of reading DNA sequences of humans have dropped from over 100 Million dollars to 80 dollars within 15 years, scientists have developed techniques to precisely edit DNA in cells, and we learned to grow tiny "organs" called organoids in the laboratory which might be suitable for transplantation one day (I made a video about “lab-grown mini brains”). It will be so great to see what will happen in the future!

This is where Crown corporations come in (similar to state owned companies in countries outside the Commonwealth). In Canada most of the major resource and infrastructure developers started as Crown corporations because no one other than the government was willing or able to take the risk. These are also usually organised on a not-for-profit basis where, depending on the charter authorising it, any potential profits either went to reducing cost, improving service, into government coffers, or sometimes into a "legacy fund" of some sort. (Many of these were privatised in the late 80's, with a rapid decline in services and increase in cost following. Ironically, many of these are major providers of essential services so in times of strife the government still has to bail it out anyway without having the benefit of reaping the profits in good times. Air Canada is one of these former Crown corporations that were privatised and has had to be bailed out on numerous occasions.) One notable exemption to a crown corporation being made to fill a gap is several telecom companies that were privately owned but wouldn't take on the cost to provide service to remote areas unless they were granted a chartered monopoly for a given area, thereby guaranteeing a return profit. And before someone says monopolies are inherently bad, the major difference is that these are chartered monopolies they come with conditions, regulatory oversight, and can be revoked. It is likely that the country which to achieve asteroid mining first will be China because they're organised essentially like a nation sized company.
