Ham Radio Antenna Tuning For Loaded Coil Antennas - Buddistick Pro & Wolf River Coil

- Load vertical antennas are great, they are super portable and offer a high resonant spot for operating HF radio. However, they are sometimes not the easiest to tune for the frequency you want to opperate on. Join me at high altitude for some ham radio run with these antennas. We will tune them and test them LIVE!

TeamReplay for the win!
I have similar issues with my ATAS-25 vertical.
Once you get it dialed in, fantastic antenna.
Great show
These are super great antennas. So many options to choose from. Also, consider creating your own 1/4 wave ground plane antenna - you will find it relatively easy to do.
Yup, weird. From Florida, my Day and Night World Map had California in the sun yet your presentation outside was dark. Thanks for publicly sharing the frustrations of antenna tuning and demonstrating it’s not always easy to achieve 1:1.
I have a Super Antenna and I like it a lot. Seems to work very well for me and I've got into Europe with it from Pennsylvania
Great work
Very helpful
Thanks Josh!
Greetings!! Thanks so much for the video. Wondering, what antenna would you recommend for the ones who are very constrained with space?
Totally kidding. I always appreciate your videos. Thanks Josh!
Nice video. Any preference on Buddistick Pro vs WRC/MP1 Super Antenna?
Love my buddi stick pro… when it was warm out… lol. And yeah wish it wasn’t green.
Are you related to Charles Cornell? 🤣 I swear there's a resemblance! Thanks for the amazing content!
Josh, with the ID52, have you done much with DPRS? I would love to you break that down on that radio.

👍🔥📻🥰
hello friend what happened in the video that the buddi antenna was so unstable at 40 meters and had a very high swr compared to the other antenna?in my opinion there was not a good contact in the part of the Versahub of the ground cable in the screw........I think that the screw that is stuck in the Versahub of the ground cable was not well tightened and was causing instability and putting the antenna in the wrong video
Tnx
confused you kept talking 20m but your rig pro kept showing 7.175 freq
This is a great video, and it was very informative. I am a new ham looking to buy an HF rig to give POTA a try. I am leaning towards the FT891 and I was going to get the BuddiStick pro. I really liked what I saw here with the WRC. On the WRC website the Platinum TIA package is slightly cheaper than the BuddiStick Pro. Any recommendations as to which performs better and would be easier for a newbie to set up. Again, thanks for the great video!!
They’re pretty equal. BSP has an elevated radial which could catch people up. I find the BSP is faster to setup too.
Can you use an antenna tuner with the wolf river antenna. If so where should I place the tab, bottom, mid, top?
You never use a tuner with a tuner vertical antenna. You physically tune the antenna for resonance.
Would love to see if gauge of wire matters for radials. I see alot of 18awg radials, but there is alot of 26awg. That is a huge difference. for portable use with couple dozen radials, thinner would be better and cheaper BUT is 26awg as effective as 18awg. If not, by how much?? negligible? like 15watts vs 20 watts or is it like 15watts to 45 watts?
Go for it. Test it out and report back. 👍
I plan to make one, but it will probably end up a Theremin.
Team replay ftw
Evening Josh.
'Q' stands for 'Quality.'
Adding a coil to an antenna doesn't add 'Q'
'Q' is a characteristic of the coil/antenna (or any type of filter)
If the coil has a large diameter wound with high conductivity wire, it will have a high 'Q' (and lower loss)
If the coil is of small diameter wound with thin wire, it will have a lower 'Q' (and higher loss)
A lower 'Q' coil will have a broader bandwidth than a high 'Q' coil.
The highest 'Q' antenna coils use in AHam Radio are Magnetic loops -- where the bandwidth is tiny.

Session IPA = a lower ABV IPA that is meant to be drank all night long without getting wasted out of your skull... typically 4% ABV or less. IPA equivalent of a light beer LOL
Need a surplus school whiteboard so you can stand and be Professor Josh!
As you add more radials to a vertical your radiation efficiency gets better but your bandwidth will be sharper. I have 60 radials under my base tuned(autotuner) 43' vertical
