I just ordered SR Cage, so this video was of interest to me. I appreciate your low-key delivery and helpful tips. I also have small form factor Arca-Swiss plate that will mount nicely. Thanks.
I just received the 'SmallRig' a6700 cage. IMHO, the improved handgrip is worth the cost of admission. The additional security of a full-cage is really nice. Fit and finish are excellent. Of note is the HDMI cable strain relief mechanism. Simple, but ingenious. Truthfully, the most I'll do with is to add a handle. However, there are a lot of mounting options for just about all the doo-dads you'd want.
I have the zv1 cage and I just upgraded to the A6700 and I’m hard on my stuff so I bought the cage with it. At first I didn’t know how to take off the strap mount, but then I realized it’s just like a key ring. Installation was a breeze. Looks like I’m gonna be happy with it!!
Thanks, Phil! Very informative. I've been curious what these cages were all about. It's really not a product for me, but I wouldn't have known that if not for this video. Thanks!
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always, today Friday the 13 is amazing for birding, we got so many American Redstart warblers, Ruby and Golden Crowned Kinglets and a lot of Eastern Tohies, be on the lookout because you guys will get a big wave of birds this weekend 🐦👍
Thanks for the review Phil! I own a few cages and use them mostly on cameras for video. Your use case is one I didn't really think of. You get the L Bracket functionally plus all of the other advantages you outlined. Thanks for all of the info. Cheers.
Be careful when using Peak Design anchors with those cages. Just watched a vid about how a6700 cage almost destroyed someone's camera. Sharp edge mounts cut through cords.
Good review. New to SONY Cameras and have never used a gage before so this sounds like something that would be interesting to use. I use mine in a shop doing wood working so having protection would be great. I need to find out more about the basic operation of the camera, such as what type of cable and how to use it for the hdmi you talked about coming out of the camera.
I don’t know because I don’t use my reading glasses when I looked through the EVF. The EVF and the rear screen are definitely the weakest parts of this camera in my opinion.
Phil l have balance issues due to arthritis & if it were not for Smallrig cages my R6 & R7 would both be battered possibly even beyond functional. I would not buy a camera that Smallrig don’t make a cage for.
Nice video. SmallRig makes some very good quality components. Unfortunately, the SmallRig cage only uses the 1/4-20 for attachment and ONE of the strap anchora; why! The Sirui cage has THREE attachment points; 1/4-20 + BOTH strap anchors. A much more solid structure! One flaw; the SmallRig and Sirui have a little hinged part at the battery door due to lack of cage clearance. The Tilta cage doesn't have that, so it IS possible to create a design WITHOUT the funky swing out part at the battery door. Unfortunately, Tilta uses only ONE of the strap anchors unlike the Sirui. For now I am only getting the SmallRig Bottom Mount Plate. This has an Arca-swiss and it extends the grip enough to support my pinky; no longer dangling. Note the Tilta cage has an anchor/screw mount for their a6700 cooling device. As far as an Arca-swiss on the L-bracket, I use a geared head tripod; it tilts 90 degrees. When setting the camera down, I am always concerned about damaging the battery door; cage protects it. There ARE right-angle HDMI cables... FYI I have had expensive cameras for 40 years Phil, and I have NEVER EVER EVER dropped one. No joke; as Biden would say! Thanks again! Especially for NOT having background music.
Can you still fit a Sony flash to the Multi Interface Shoe with the cage fitted? With the Falcam cage which is similar, the shoe is not itself obstructed but there is not enough clearance at thee front of the show for the bulbous foot of Sony Flashguns

I’ve used SmallRig cages on a number of my camera bodies! They are fantastic.
They make really good stuff. I have owned several pieces of smallrig gear, but this is my first cage.

Many thanks. You really covered everything. Am just about to order this and was concerned about how it would feel compared to it without the cage.
Thank you! There is a link in the "my gear" area in the description.
I got one for protection, added grip purchase, maybe some accessories at some point.
I still have not taken mine off the camera since I put it on while I was making this video.
Good review Phil, Smallrig make really high quality gear which I’ve always enjoyed using, it’s design is always really well thought through!
Thank you!
I got one for my Z8 and just love it I knew if Phil tried one he would be doing backflips over it !!!!!!
They make really great gear!

Smallrig make some nice gear and this cage looks great. Good idea getting it from protection and L bracket 👍🙏
I can’t wait to take this little camera out for some more landscape photography! Thanks, Adrain!
Thank you for this great review and installation guide!
Thank you!
All the Sony cages since the zvE1 version have been so so nice. Nothing like the square garbage designs of the past.
It’s a very nice design ergonomically. 👍

@@TheWickedPebbles I’ll keep an eye on it, thank you.
Nice review. Was wondering if it had built in Lbracket. You answered that question for me.
Thanks, Ron!
Nice review. I ordered the cage and a top handle the same day I ordered my camera and it's still on backorder.
They still have some in stock at the link in my description.
Can i attach nato top handle to the top of this cage without any additional accessory
Great review, thanks
Thank you!

Thank you! I am still happy with it and have yet to remove it from the camera since I made this review.
What about flipping out the screen and then rotating the screen..... does it work? Thanx
Yes, it works. I would not use any device that makes the flippy screen useless.
Wish I could buy one. Neither BH or SmallRig have them in stock nor know when they will
There is a link in the description.
how is the EVF with spectacles? being only 1 cm, is it easy to use with spectacles?
I don’t know because I don’t use my reading glasses when I looked through the EVF. The EVF and the rear screen are definitely the weakest parts of this camera in my opinion.
Is it fine if it stays forever attached on the camera? I mean will it make the body broken?
Yes, I have had mine on for well over a month now with no problems.
Phil l have balance issues due to arthritis & if it were not for Smallrig cages my R6 & R7 would both be battered possibly even beyond functional. I would not buy a camera that Smallrig don’t make a cage for.
Fortunately, small rig makes cages for just about everything I think. I’m glad you are able to get some use out of them!
What about the USB cable? Is there any way to protect it like the HDMI with a cable clamp for someone who streams via USB?
Are you able to attach a strap to it
Yes.

That’s a great question. I do use a third-party flash with the cage attached, but I don’t own a Sony flash to test that for you unfortunately.
What about overheating?
I haven’t experienced any overheating but I do mostly stills with this camera.
👍👍👍
Thank you!
the only reason I even searched for this video was to see how to take off the strap holders on the side... and you already had them taken off... lol
Sorry. It's basically just like removing a key ring.
Thank you for saving me
😂, me too!!
@@PhilThachAnd I figured that out with a little visual inspection, but the video was good!
