Court of Owls is a must
Hell yeah
It's a great starting on point for new readers too
+You Dont E.N.O no, it is not a must read. It's okay but you won't miss anything fantastic if you skip it.
It is a must. It's one of Batman most well written/drawn stories.
+Mr Simmons thank you, it's good but certainly not great. Snyder/Capullo on Death of The Family was great.
Batman is the GREATEST superhero of all time!
+bsefan he's not the strongest, he's not perfect, but he's certainly the most iconic superhero ever.
*Spider-Man
Aaron Hernandez definitely no.2
+Danish Khan I prefer my superheros not to be all perfect it's one of the reason I'm not a fan of superman he's just too damn boring mainly due how perfect he is
+Aaron Hernandez
Emo Spiderman Vs Bat Man with Bat Nipples
Who do you think would win?
They tell us what we should read, and then kind of spoil it...
F you
+AndroidRoo Language
he's right
+istrone He gave out Hush's identity in first sentence and I stopped the vdo immediately.
+istrone the killing joke came out early 90's, and the dark knight is like 2012, spoiler rule does not apply to things after 1 year of release
The Court of Owls deserves more than an honorable mention I think. One of the few things the New 52 did right was introduce them to Gotham.
The Court of Owls comics are very underrated
"long Halloween gives you everything you'd want in a batman comic"
... Besides a conclusive ending.
*OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH*
Its still amazing
Read the sequel Dark Victory
and after Dark Victory, Haunted Knight
There is also Catwoman when in Rome
I just read it and it was my first Batman comic I have read and tbh, I think it’s AMAZING. I think I understood the ending too tbh
I honestly couldn't choose which comic I like better: The Killing Joke or The Dark Knight Returns. Sometimes I go one way, sometimes the other. If I am going to have a favorite, I prefer it to be multiple choice lol
OHHHHHHH YOURE FUCKING DOPE
I don't get it
+Jman Joker said the multiple choice thing regarding his origin in The Killing Joke.
+Jman Then you haven't read Killing Joke.
BibbyBoxx2219 What multiple choice thing
I really like the art of Batman Hush
Agreed, it’s nice artwork, but what I can’t stand is the Batman/Catwoman romance. Ugh.
Definitely the cleanest art too.
Hush Batman Hush
Same
Jim Lee is probably my favorite comic book artist
10. Batman: Hush
9. Batman: The Cult
8. Batman: A Death in the Family
7. Arkham Asylum: Serious house on serious earth
6. Batman: knightfall
5. Batman: Dark victory
4. Batman: A dark Halloween
3. Batman: year one
2. The killing joke
1. Return of the dark knight
The dark Knight returns and batman year one, the good stories before frank Miller become insane and starting drawing like a 5 years old
I would include Martha Washington one and sin city along side his batman work. also his daredevil arc is fucking classic.
Poor guy that lobotomy went bad for him
+Yust1234 he had a nasty divorce(a woman who collaborated with him on comics for fucking decades) , had cancer in his bladder, kidney and prostate. he was also a life long new yorkian and took 9/11 personally. that's more or less kind of lead to his current state.
+DC cinematic universe sucks every yeah since 9/11*
What the hell happened to him? He was good!
I'm calling it now:
3) The killing Joke
2) Batman: Year one
1) The Dark Knight Returns
oooooh, so close!
+UnkeptMoss328 close ;)
1/3
That was a hell of an effort, man.
+UnkeptMoss328 That is as close as it can get. Holy crap. If only you swapped those you'd be 3 for 3!
Where is Death of the Family?! D:
+Enda Gallagher It was number 8.
+sfighter00 That was Death IN the family. Jason Todd's death. Death OF the family is a gruesome mix of Death in the Family, and Killing joke.
Ominethious Calistian Oh oops.
+Enda Gallagher I KNOW RIGHT! was expecting it to be number one
Ikr, like how did they not mention it
One of the most iconic dialogue..i want you to remember one man who beats you
+Mayank Gupta this is a operation table and I am the surgeon
@@simaopereira3697 you’ll stay scared, won’t you punk?
Glad that the Court of Owls story got a mention. That's one of my favorite comic book storylines.
Guys, this list isnt best top ten, just what 10 you should read, dont get butthurt
+The Flash hey umm the flash huh Barry Allen or Wally West
+BloodyRageGaming Well his pic is Barry Allen
+The Flash And it's a great list in that regard. Many of these comics on this list are the exact ones that my friends suggested to me when I first started getting into comics.
I hope they make one for you
So let me get this straight. You title your video 'Top 10 Batman Comics You Should Read' but then tell us the massive plot twist of Batman: Hush, which is that Thomas Elliot, is Hush. What's the point in people reading it if you're just going to ruin the biggest pull to these books for the people who haven't read it?
Rydar Yes, but I assume Watchmojo was making this list for new comic readers who don't know that sort of thing.
+BREBBERS I realized that when i read your comment not from the video xD
Thanks man...
+Javier Villarroel Lol, me too, damn it. I was watching this on my ps3, but then paused it to check the comments on my laptop to see if there were any spoilers. The sad part of it is that I have this book on my shelf, I just haven't got around to reading it. Shit!
+Todd Smith Just read it, I also knew before I read Hush that Thomas Elliot was Hush, but the story is really well written and it makes a lot of fun reading it. I think you wont be disappointed.
It's about how we get there, not the endpoint.
My TOP 5:
5) Batman Year One
4) Batman Hush
3) Batman The Long Halloween
2) Batman (New52) Court of Owls
1) Batman The Dark Knight Returns
ZERO year?
@the N word I thought zero year was meh honestly I much prefer year one
@@astukokiotili5496 really? I love it but I do think year one is a lot better frank Miller my booiiiii!!!
Is Hush really good?
@@andrewabraham7597 not really
I love the dark knight returns but the killing joke is my favorite, its a classic you can read over and over again and never get tired of it :)
I own all of these except The Cult, guess I should pick it up.
+kieralinn lol...yeah me too
+kieralinn Hey me too! but what i don't have is Dark victory. Cuz i never thought the sequel could live up to the first one that is Long halloween
+kieralinn Same, didnt even know that ti existed. On it ;)
+kieralinn the cult is awesome with tiny bubbles
+Thomas Wayne07 It's pretty good. Don't know why Batman would have to deal with another serial killer after TLH but... it's still a good read.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm from the present, and the Killing joke(Animated) is disappointing.
I was going to watch it tomorrow, now I'm unsure if I should do so :c
Unverschämt It's not bad, just remember that the 25 minutes are not worthy enjoying, it's shit. But once the 15 minutes of killing joke is here, it quite enjoyable.
Was it confirming the Joker's backstory or just showing one of his possible memories?
Tobias Greinberg It's kinda Bat girl begins and stuff that doesn't fit well. Oh, and Batsex.
I really liked it once the killing joke story actually happens. Especially when Joker attacks Barbara. That part is pretty chilling. And it's pretty much word for word like the comic. That epilogue is pointless tho.
I would recommend pretty much the entire run by Scott Snyder/Greg Capullo from the New 52. Court of Owls, Zero Year, Death of The Family (a play on A Death in the Family), and Endgame.
Batman is the best DC Comic character HANDS DOWN!
Batman is my favourite avenger
What?
Lol mine too
My favorite Justice Leaguer is Spider-Man lol
Libby Couch it’s a joke
😂😂
Man I freaking love Court of the Owls, definably a must read even though it didn't fall on the top 10
Way to spoil the entire point to Hush being a detective storyline. Just give away the big mystery for anyone who hasn't read it.
Jake Pope Are you an idiot? You actually went into a video with this title and you complain about spoilers
Even though I figured it out the moment Hush is introduced, it is indeed a spoiler. And you don't put spoilers in a video where you literally recommend these comics to new readers.
Aseril I've read the comic multiple times. The video is recommending comics people should read, implying that you shouldn't spoil it for people who haven't.
You are the idiot for not having that figured out by the title. I was complaining that they've spoiled it for new readers. I am not a new reader.
Gonna say without watching video that #1 is gonna be The Dark Knight returns!
Some of the comics on this list were big inspirations for “The Batman” (2022)!
My top 10:
10 A man who laughs
9 Mad love
8 Hush
7 Court of owls
6 Night of owls
5 Long Halloween
4 Year one
3 Death of family
2 Dark knight returns
1 Killing joke
How the hell did Snyder get snubbed to only an honorable mention.
The Court of Owls, Death of the Family, and Endgame are absolute must reads.
Cuz Hes name is Snyder. That name has a stigmata in the superhero genre
More about the comics and less movie clips would have been welcome.
Whoever didn't read the Killing Joke, Endgame, Batman Eternal, or Death of/Death in the Family, I feel sorry for you.
Killing Joke and some of Eternal are missing for me. I'll have to alleviate that soon.
+The Engie That Cried Nope I don't read garbage.
The Killing Joke is amazing.
+The Engie That Cried Nope Those are the best, dont know why they were not on the list?
Thing with death in the family is that it's so iconic everyone already knows the story without having to read it. So there's almost no point anymore
Nah I'd say it's
11.A lonely place of dying (isn't as good as some of the others but is still very gd and is more important than most of them as it shows y batman needs a robin)
10.Hush/under the hood (couldn't decide)
9.Killing joke
8.Dark victory
7.RIP (read batman and son and black glove first otherwise it won't make sense there both collected in the batman and son omnibus)
6.death of the family (not a death in)
5.DKR
4.Black mirror
3.Long holloween
2.Court of owls
1.Year one
My personal favorite is the Long Halloween. Two Face is one of my favorite villains and it’s my favorite story surrounding him. It’s also an amazing detective story, one of Batman’s best. It also has a unique art style and I love it so much.
as arkham asylum is one of my favorite comic of all times, let me tell you that even if youre not into Comics, just read it. its more than a comic, its a piece of art actually.
hm where's The Death of The Family?
Number 8
It's the third one
Yeah, it's my favourite
nope that's A death IN the family. different stories folks.
Yes in
Epic background music during the intro and even better background music for the rest of the video
Gotham is my favourite show of all time so that you use snippets of the show makes me so happy!
Court of Owls is my personal favorite, to be honest I liked all of the New 52 stories with creators Stephen Snider and Greg Capullo. They are the true heroes from making the best batman storyline ever.
IMO all of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's run is a must
Absolutely read The Killing Joke! The dynamic between Batman and the Joker in that story is unmatched and some of the best writing I have ever experienced.
Awesome countdown, need more like it with different comics!!
More top ten comic lists like this please!!
I've never read a Batman comic, and I'm gonna start, so this was helpful
Death in the Family can be an interesting concept. With the death of Jason Todd, Batman becomes more serious and brooding than before. Replacing his dark blue costume with the yellow circle on it, and becoming the dark gritty Batman we all know today.
Under the red hood should have been on this list
Agreed.
Death in the family was better bcuz it out jason where he needed to be to become red hood, we'd have no red hood if it wasn't for that story
I agree 100%
The movie was better
The movie was bloody incredible
Long Halloween fucked with my mind at the end
The Dark Knight Returns is such a good fucking read.
"Batman Year 100"... one day this will be a classic!!! One of the best comics I' ve ever read, not just Batman!
I hope you make a list of top 10 must read Captain America, Justice League, Deadpool, Green Lantern, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider and many more.
My favorite Batman stories: Batman: Tenses, Under the Red Hood, Death in the family, Batman: Hush, No Man's Land, Dark Knight Returns, Court of Owls, The Man who Laughs... nuff said.
"Under the Red Hood" should have been mentioned.
I've read some of these (specifically A Death in the Family, DKR, The Killing Joke and Year One...and the first issue of The Cult). Now for me, I also fondly remember the first Joker story from Batman #1 (Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson), the various Denny O'Neil/Neil Adams/Dick Giordano Batman stories from the early 70s, especially the Rai's Al Ghul stories, and the Steve Englehart/Marshall Rogers/Terry Austin run in Detective Comics from the late 70s (yes, even the fish stories :).
Not to mention the various stories illustrated by the late, great artist Jim Aparo (especially when he used to ink and letter his own stuff...just made his dynamic page layouts even more so).
Awesome list!
I think red hood story is very good, seeing jason todd from the least liked robin to the one of the most popular villains red hood.
Without watching I already know the killing joke is in the top 3
well call me raven Baxter cause I can see the future
+Shannaro! Baka To be fair, the Killing Joke is one the most iconic comic books, general.
+Shannaro! Baka It's the first one I ever read. It's also the first comic Tim Burton's ever loved
Wrong it's the top 2
the beauty of The Killing Joke is not the story. The story is fairly generic, though it is brutal.
The beauty of The Killing Joke is the amazing philosophy that Joker drops on us.
Great list and honorable mentions. Like them all except Arkham Aslyum. Batman Nine Lives is really good too
1 - Batman - Zero Year (Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo)
2 - Batman - The Black Mirror. A fantastic story following Dick Grayson, who is my second favorite right behind Bruce. I wish it was more than honorable mention on this list.
3 - Killing Joke
I like how you didn't spoil Hush. Good Job.
We all know who Hush is at this point anyway.
If someone didn't play Arkham games, how would they know?
The comic came out a long time ago, so it becomes a late arrival spoiler at worst. I never read Hush, but I knew his identity before Arkham series became a thing.
If someone only now gets into comic books, he wouldn't know about Hush, hell, this video literally is for those who haven't read those comic books mentioned. If it suggests reading these, why tell spoilers from them? Would you go up to someone who hasn't seen the sixth sense and has no idea what it is about and say "Oh, it's a great movie, Bruce Willis plays a ghost who doesn't know that"? No you wouldn't, unless you are an asshole, which I assume you aren't.
Now that I think about it, you might haven't seen The Sixth Sense and I could've ruined it for you. In which case I am sorry.
Now that they're making The Killing Joke into an animated film, I'd like to see an adaptation of The Long Halloween/Dark Victory story into an animated movie.
Very nice list ... even though I would put Year One on First Place and DKR on two. I like it that Black Mirror gets an honorable mention, because it is maybe the most underrated Batman story ever.
Gotham by Gaslight, Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader, The Court of Owls, Death of the Family and Under the Hood are also must reads
IMO, the killing joke should be #1. Even though TDKR is awesome, TKJ is more relevant to the batman mythos and is deeper
Agreed!
I totally get where you're coming from, but I personally never really looked at TKJ as a Batman story. I felt that it belonged to Joker, Jim, and Barbara far more. It is still one of my favorite graphic novels and I consider it to possibly be one of the richest stories ever told within the mythos, but as far as focus is concerned, Batman is the least important person in it to me. That doesn't make it bad in any way, it just feels different in that regard compared to The Cult, Hush, TDKR, etc.
I completely agree
+Manta Too overwritten.
+Danijel Str
To each their own. You may not like it much, but others do. Different people, different opinions
Top 10 SPIDER-MAN Comics You Should Read
+Kubanito2020 actually that sounds like a good idea when you think about it.
The Long Halloween has long been my favorite, I also really love The Black Mirror for the more modern tales
The first Batman comic i ever read was the Dark Knight Returns, my dad gave it to me when i was a little kid, and i still have it to this day.
Under the Hood is one of my all time favorites
Where's under the red hood?
I guess it's mixed together with "a death in the family". So it technically made the list.
Frank Miller art style brings me back to the 80's, and it's very unique since he doesn't draw that much details but the comic is amazing the same
My List
1. Ego
2. the Dark Knight Returns
3. the Killing Joke
4. Mad Love
5. Year One
6. the Long Halloween
7. Dark Victory
8. Knightfall
9. the Court of Owls
10. Hush

Black Mirror, Court of Owls, Death of the Family, Zero Year, and End Game should be on the list
Scott Snyder is good just not that good but I do think court of owls or black mirror should be on here
+Jeremy Fields I would definitely switch Death in the Family for Death of the Family. Zero Year is really good, but I felt like it had some pacing problems plus some other stuff that bothered me like how they portrayed the scene of Joker falling into the chemical vat - and while Year One is short, it's also very well paced and has one of my favorite Batman moments (though I love the Riddler in Zero Year, so tough choice). I'd definitely have Black Mirror on here too. Even End Game is good enough to at least make the honorable mentions.
The Scott Snyder/Greg Capullo team is possibly the best duo to ever do Batman, I still can't believe they couldn't even crack the top ten.
+McScroggz I feel like endgame was just a rehash and Scott going for wow factor which is not necessarily bad it's just he tries to pull of these big stories but nothing important ever comes of them. Now you could say there is a new batman and everything else but i can almost guarantee everything will be the same by next year
Well, in comics there is no real permanence for major characters - especially somebody like Batman. So, I suppose End Game won't have the same impact as, say, Grant Morrison's run on Batman; but even without lasting impact the story was still a lot of fun and well told with some great moments. Death of the Family didn't have lasting ramifications, but it was fantastic anyways in part because Snyder is aware enough to subvert the expectations of the readers (though the title gives it away). I don't think there needs to be major shakeups to the DC universe for a story to be amongst the best.
I will say though, there is something lacking in End Game but I'm not sure what it is exactly.Carson Dawes
+McScroggz The best duo since Batman and Robin themselves
AMAZING video thank you!
when are you going to update the list to include the new 52 and the rebirth stories.. waiting for your take on this!
You guys totally forgot Batman: The Red Hood
+Narwhal That's because the movie was good, they made some changes from the comic that made the story more interesting. The comic; however, is a convoluted mess of story telling.
Oh, never knew that, lol.
+Narwhal Also, it's number 8 on the list.
No, that's "A Death in the Family", lol
Ricky Wilson
Death in the Family is long before red hood. It is about Jason Todd's death, but never touches on the red hood.
Top 10 Superman Comics... Make it Happen!!!!!
I dont know if this should count but Death of the Family is really good as well. Maybe Watchmojo could do a top ten joker stories or top ten Justice League comics or top ten superman or DC comics because they are all awesome.
Liked this video, Batman is awesome, so this was interesting to me :)
I wonder if Batman: Year One is a prequel to Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
I know this is late, but it's Imao
No it's not it's retelling of batman's origin
Batman endgame
+Anirudh Baranwal number 8
I don't know, I didn't like the plot twist in Endgame, the one about the Joker.
Cacophony, Widening Gyre, Batman Year One, The Killing Joke and of course Dark Knight Returns are some of my faves
@Watchmojo.com. Batman Venom is a personal favorite. It was the one comic that got me hooked in the batman universe and consequently made me buy whole story arcs, including the ones on the list.
Batman, No Man's land is also a great arc.

They didn't give a spoiler alert?
+The PJO Mothafuqa no
I get it why they didn't mention Henry. 😂😂😂😱😱😱😱. Superman curse.
OK watch mojo you did top 10 batman comics, now do top 10 superman comics
+WatchMojo.com You should do "Top DC Animated Movies" next.
No Man''s Land is nowhere to be seen?
Sadly people seem to diss no mans land it was even an influence to the Dark Knight Rises
No Man's Land is amazing. One of my all time favorite Batman stories. Not even an honorable mention. Scandalous.
+gamepro504
And part of Arkham City
I knew dark knight returns would be no. 1 without a doubt. I mean batman beating superman and saying-"I want you to remember the man who beat you" still sends chills up my spine
Batman Year 1 ,The Dark Knight Returns ,Batman Hush and Batman Knightfall are some pretty awesome reads .Considering some of what put down .Has been on the big screen or in parts of The Batman Arkham games .
Am I the only one that doesn't really like TDKR. I personally recommend Year One to anyone.
I'm the same, I think killing joke is better
TDKR is good for the most part in regards to an aged Bruce taking the mantle of Batman again after so long.
but my gripe with it is that they completely messed about with Superman, making him out to be the governments lapdog. plus the whole 'Batman beat Superman' thing is ridiculous to begin with.
I am also not a fan of TDKR. I like the confrontations Bruce has with Harvey and the Joker but to me the rest of the story is just dumb.
Me too. I mean it's great but I think it's a bit overated. Plus everytime I read it I remember that it takes place in the same universe with All Star Batman And Robin and that doesn't help.
+Crimson Gamer DO you mean the dark knight rises or returns. I think both are great but I understand why people don't like them
I was hoping Poison Ivy would be involved with Batman Vs Superman but sadly not. Oh well, maybe she'll appear in a Harley Quinn solo film instead.
He'll ya. I'm hoping she shows up in the DCU sometime. If not I kind of want to see her in the flash tv show. I wouldn't mind if they made her a meta human.
I'm hoping for a Gotham city sirens adaptation where Catwoman, poison ivy and Harley Quinn team up
+Christian Tolentino she deserves to be in the DCU. Perhaps Justice League? There are two Flash villains called Rose and Thorn who are basically Poison Ivy discounts so it's likely we'll see them first.
+Jordan Tate I'd LOVE a gotham city sirens movie
+Christian Tolentino She is a metahuman.
I think that "Death of the Family" and "Batman Eternal" are pretty good stories
another must read is the "death of the family" and "Endgame" which are recent arcs. Those will surely be classics as well.
Today I finally got my first Batman comic "Batman '66 Meet The Green Hornet" #1 I love it so much.
Awesome I highly reccomend you get knightfall,DK Returbs or the killing joke.
But there is an animated killing joke movie coming if you would rather watch it
Lord of the Star Potter OK I will then but I need to just find it :P.
Slenderspartan cool let me go find it on Ebay.
Luke - i'd say since he digs Batman '66 Meet The Green Hornet, the goIden age stuff shouId be right up his street!
10). Batman: The Hush
9). Batman: The Cult
8). Batman: A Death In The Family
7). Arkham Asylum
6). Batman: Knightfall
2. Batman : A Death in the Family.
wow. Probably the only time I've agreed with a WM list in its entirety. Though I would probably add Detective Comics #27 to the list since it's his first appearance and it should be read to be appreciated for its place in history and how far the character has evolved in 76 years.
Also: War Games.
TDKR (obviously), Long Halloween, Death in the Family, Hush, Year One, Killing Joke, Court of Owls, Gotham by Gaslight, Dark Detective, Son of the Demon, Under the Hood and Battle for the Cowl are some of my favourites.
Batman: battle for the cowl is pretty good
That's one of my favourites.
You're comment suits you're username lol.
Dick Grayson yeah it is u were batman black mirror is batter then that though and u where batman in that aswell
I love them both, but Killing Joke > The Dark Knight Returns
love this list
Hush and Killing Joke along with any storyline involving Ra's Al Ghul are my most favorite Batman storylines.
I'm sorry, but no I don't agree with your list because 1: I think should have at least had one Scott Snyder story and 2: The Dark Knight Returns (I think) is severely overrated. (This is all based on my opinion)
It's not really overrated bcuz everyone wanted to see batman at a stage of his life where you'd think he gives it all up but he still pushes on and fights till the end, makes a great story
Why do you think it is overrated? I definitely don't think it's perfect, but I'd like to hear why you think so and hopefully see a new perspective on the book.
The art is what makes it bad
@@bethzidavelez5376 I mean yeah if you read comics from 2000 and later and/or have a specific artstyle you like and can't appreciate other styles it's your problem
Top 10 Basketball Players of all time
I absolutely love Batman comics! They are some of my favorite books to read ever. Unlike most other books I read… I could read Batman comics for hours.
Can I just say that The Dark Knight Returns animated movie is great. I know its based off of arguably the greatest Batman comic book, maybe even greatest comic book, but I havent read it. But I did love it. I would venture to say Peter Weller has possibly the best Batman voice, maybe even better than Conroy (I'm not sure who I like better) his is so deep he doesn't need to change it.
