    A lot of people don't know how much versatility Gwen Stefani possess, _especially_ in No Doubt, they mixed Ska, Reggae, Rock, Pop, etc. She was the new wave queen who screamed 'Girl Power' and stood out in a male dominated industry... but people who only know her solo stuff or from 'The Voice' don't give her enough credit when she's actually the inspiration and influence to lots of front-women in bands even till this day. Check out "Just A Girl" please, it was such an anthem (and still is... lol)

      le th Just a girl hit top 10 in Australia, UK and NZ. It got them noticed.
      Don’t Speak went no 1 in Australia, Canada, Netherlands, UK, NZ, Switzerland and Sweden. To date it is their only song that went No 1 anywhere in the world.

    • @le_th_
      @le_th_ 4 года назад

      @@jspettifer I'm talking about where this band is from....the US. Having traveled over a huge chunk of your beautiful, clean and friendly country, I can say that although the continent of AU is about the same size of the 48 contiguous US states, the entire population of Australia is equivalent to the population of the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, where No Doubt originated (Anaheim). That is one metropolitan area of the US and it's not even the largest in population.
      I recognize that bands often chart differently in different countries, especially outside of their own. We see this in the US all the time, and there are some bands from the US who don't do well in the US, but do extremely well in other countries. The same is true for some celebrities who are just moderately popular in the US, but wildly popular elsewhere.
      Back then, the 90's, songs and albums were generally released in their country of origin first, and then...at a later date...released abroad, usually in the UK, then later Europe (this is before there was an EU and before music was available to download online).
      "I'm Just a Girl" was wildly popular in the US with hourly airplay on our radio stations and on Mtv. On population alone, the record sales in the US dwarfed most countries (back then). Today, China and India also have access to purchasing music online that they didn't have back in the 90s, and those sales can dwarf any sales that might occur in the US...but we are talking about the early-mid 90s now, before the dot com era and proliferation of the internet.
      I'm sure various countries around the globe show varying chart levels for No Doubt's singles and albums, as well. Certainly, there are a number of countries where No Doubt's music doesn't even show on the charts. I can't imagine that any Muslim country would allow a song like I'm Just A Girl to receive airplay, even today (maybe I'm wrong as this is a purely uneducated guess on my part).

    No Doubt formed in 1986, having had another original lead singer, but when he died of suicide in 1987, Gwen took over that part, previously having ‘only’ been a vocalist, along with the other former members (one of which was her brother, Eric), before the ‘new’ band came together in 1992, where it was her and the other three new band members. The band went on a prolonged hiatus, but despite that, and despite still not being reunited today as a band, they have performed a few times in the past.

    This is from No Doubt's third album Tragic Kingdom which made them international superstars back in 1995, totally part of my teenage years lol, this song is about Gwen's breakup with the bassist Tony, you could react to every song in this album but "Just a Girl" and "Sunday Morning" stand out for me, but the whole album is a classic.

    No Doubt was really big in the 90s and early 2000s. One of my faves. Gwen is an icon to those of us who were 80s babies, we grew up with her. Listen to Just a Girl, Spiderwebs, Sunday Morning, Ex Girlfriend, Bathwater all singles to draw you in.

    The message had a duel meaning .Message to a member of the group she had a falling out with relationship wise. The hidden meaning of knowing that the group is talking about her as well as mocking her behind her back and sometimes in front of her face. The group feeling the push from outside forces wanting Stephanie in the front just before they broke up.

    When I first heard Don’t Speak, I knew it was a new classic song. That is Gwen Stefani.

    New, Ex-Girlfriend (live) and Cool are great songs too. You made me feel quite old. I remember when all this happened. Tragic Kingdom is about her breakup with Tony Kanal, the bassist, the guy who picks the rotten fruit.

    I may be wrong but if I recall correctly the band was originally a Ska band and her brother was in it so she hung around a lot until they asked her to sing, then she just became a member of the band. Then of course went on to do solo stuff.

    Per Wiki :
    Originally a love song, Gwen rewrote the lyrics almost completely after her break up with the band's bassist Tony Kanal. According to Gwen, "It used to be more upbeat, more of a Seventies rock-type thing. [When] Tony and I broke up... it turned into a sad song." [4] A live version that exists from April 1994 shows off a bouncy tune that has the same skeleton as the released version, but not the same urgency. The band performed part of the original song on VH1 Storytellers on August 10, 2000.
