Joyo has a few OUTSTANDING overdrive pedals - my favs of theirs are: Sweet Baby; US Dream; Tai Chi; Ultimate OD; also their American Sound and AC Tone modelers are pretty fine as well.
I concur I like the Joyo and Jekyll and Hyde the best as well. I thought they put out the best mid range. I was also thinking that because they were first and last that is may be psychological.
I thought that was the worst sounding of all of them. Muddy sounding, and dull as hell. I wouldn't use that pedal for a paperweight. But I'm glad you like it though. At the end of the day that's all that really matters, individual taste.
The biggest difference I hear is not the tone, it's the hiss/hum/noise level. The Joyo seems much quieter than all the others. Is that just becasue it's first in the chain?
...and the audience who came to have fun wouldn't care either way. Although the studio might be different. I do wonder in these days of so much choice do we spent too long procrastinating and not enough time doing. (Is that my guilty conscience speaking?) :)
Chris Franklyn A lot of people do so, it's very common, usually (not always) it's the amateurs who care about their gear and tone nuances the most. The real pro session musicians I've seen were quite relaxed about what's available and sounded fantastic on just about anything. But I do not think GAS is bad, it's just quite a different hobby from making music, that's it :) I'm guilty too.
I agree. The difference is so small. Some are more compressed and have a little smoother distortion. Some are slightly more open and have more top end sizzle. I got the Joyo since it's so cheap and a great starting point for TS style pedals. I paid like 28 bucks new :)
Thank you for the comparison video. They're definitely very similar to each other. I kind of like what they do, but usually want a bit less - minimal gain, a bit more low end and high end left in.
I started accumulating ods, distortions back in the 70s and have around 75. To the avg Joe all sound the same except for the "bees in a can" EHX types. That said, with a simple tweak of a knob here and there I can make 80%+ sound alike. From cheap no name to vintage $800+ rare early Rats. Same as most guitars with a 12 band eq...
I used to have a TS-9 and a Black Russian Big Muff on my board but then I got a used Jekyll & Hyde and it replaced both of them. Sounds about the same as before but a little more manageable to have the two pedals combined into one. I love it!
@@chipsterb4946I bought the TS7 in the early 2000s and used it live all the time. It's scratched up and looks terrible now. But the switch never failed. It's still the original and works fine.
The into is one of the things i love about Wampler... the fact that Brian is telling you to go check out other pedals... rather than buy my pedals, mine are the best..... speaks volumes.
The Joyo and Jekyll&Hyde sound the most dynamic. I own the Joyo & it sounds very good boosting the cranked clean channel on my SS amp with 2 x 10" Celestions (G10L-35). As a hobby guitarist, a Wampler OD pedal is too rich for my blood at $240 CAD on Amazon. However, I really enjoy these informative and interesting videos!
I really liked this. As an inveterate tube screamer user, it took me forever to find one that really gave me everything I wanted. The one against which I've compared every TS-type pedal was my old TS808, which i foolishly sold as a youth. Nothing I played throughout the ensuing years did the same things to my ears. When I found the old Route 66, everything got better. That TS, coupled with the onboard compressor did wonderful things. However, it still didn't give me the wigglies like my old 808. Then one day, a smart guy put out a pedal called the Clarksdale. I now own one TS-type pedal. It's everything I've ever wanted in that type of circuit.
Nice quick little demo Brian. All sounded very close, and all reminded me why I don't have a TS type pedal on my board lol. I've always picked up two sounds happening at the same time, like wet and dry and it's like nails on a chalkboard to me. EQD's Dunes was close but I replaced it with a KTR Klon and it's my cup-o-tea.
Yep. At least EHX soul food was 1:1 the original signal when gain was set at 0. The distortion blended in smoothly when dimed in. Nevertheless, klon & its clones are soooo good sounding od's.
I have 3 Jeckyll & Hyde pedals on my board (a V2 in front of my amp that I use like a Tubescreamer [I like the bass boost on the Jeckyll from the V2], and a V1 and V3 in my effects loop for my distortion tones).
I don't get why people can't hear the differences - wait a minute I know why now... I am listening on a Focusrite D/A into KRK Series 2 V8 Monitors... with good reference speakers every one of these pedals had notable differences in presence or darkness from the others. The Joyo was my clear (no pun intended) favorite, TS9 after that. YES, THE JOYO IS BETTER. I say this as a person who has had a TS in his arsenal since the 70's. Thanks Brian!
I watched three different times and each time I picked a different one as sounding better. So I watched in order *again* and each one sounded better than the last. So then I watched them in reverse order and each sounded better than the last. I think I can conclude that they sound similar enough on that setting as to not make any difference.
That is called psychoacoustics. Yes, it's a thing!! Like trying to taste 5 different beers one after the other, the last one affects how the next one tastes. Highly recommended!
Yeah, I think anytime you can't keep track of what your even hearing or pick out a consistent winner, that tells you there is no significant difference and it won't matter which one you pick. I just watched a similar video from another channel where they did the exact same comparison of some of these pedals and a few others and the results were even less discernable after about 2 passes through the group. I couldn't even tell anymore when he had switched pedals. When a Joyo sounds just as good as a Mesa at less than a 1/4 of the price, I think that will do.
Things that determine tone, from most important to not important at all: - Player - Speaker - Mic placement - Guitar: pickups etc, but not wood - Amp - Pedals - Price of guitar cable - Tonewood

Yes i am overdrive shopping and its between a green rhino and a vht but the low price of the modtone dallas is tempting but not actually alot of dos on it
They are similar, although if i recall correctly a few of them aren't true bypass which could alter the end result, in which case i would use some kind of looper.
I used a jekle and hyde for a lot of years for the last 10 years i only used the ts portion i remember it being fairly low gain maybe the newer ones have more gain i sold it over board space i have now been shopping for a new od for 3 years
Great video! I’d love to know the ‘internal’ (technical) differences between some of them. For example is the Joyo an ‘identical’ copy of a TS9 or 808, or is it a close but not an exact copy?
wayne rorbach umm no. Haha! I am interested in electronics and HOW pedals get their sound. I can very well tell the sonic differences. Now I’d like to know what components correspond to those differences.
With fixed settings it´s hard to tell any difference. But maybe there are some differences on the range of the knobs and stuff like that. Usually bad overdrives are muddier in low volumes. Good video, but someone should do another one testing them on several settings.
Interesting comparison. They all sounded the same to me, but I'd like to know which overdrives have the least and most background hiss (with the drives and levels adjusted to give comparable sounds). I'm sure that would be really useful. Anyone done this already?
Hmmmm . . . The Arion was definitely the NOISIEST of them all. Sound wise, the differences were pretty small. I have the Joyo pedal on my board. I'm going to keep it there.
I love the way you did that. The lick play exactly the same thru all the pedals. Loved it. But it went a little fast. Maybe next time do less pedals an let the lick play 2 times or bounce back and forth . The differences to me where very slight.
They all sound pretty similar. I just finished playing with a Joyo OD about an hour ago, through a Fender hrd, turned up to about 3(loud on that amp). The pedal had a good sound quality for sure. My playing wasn't nearly as good however. I think most of the pedals sound as good as the guitarist can use them. Interesting video, always enjoy your videos!
They're all extremely similar with some having a little more bottom as far as i can tell. The only "big" difference to me was the maxxon. I guess they all vary greatly in price and it goes to show that it doesn't really matter which one you buy; they're all practically the same.
@Albert Gutierrez Here's an idea I've heard many times. Start with all your pedals hooked up but off, and set your amp and guitar to sound good alone (if you have separate EQs for clean and crunch, do both). After that, work through your pedals one at a time, followed by your most common combos. You should be able to find your best tones, plus maybe some new ones, as well as any problems in your setup. :)
WAMPLER, what pedals do you recommend using to get those boxy tone but at low gain levels just only to get that boxy tone? TS pedals get that boxy tone but only when higher DRIVE settings. I'm not sure if this boxy tone is called compression but TS pedals higher drive setting will get more boxy tone which others call it compression which is the wrong term i think. What do you call it?
great demo. all are too similar to tell differences in this volume. The real differences may be at higher volumes and by varying the settings. My JHS modded Soul Food and Wampler Dual Fusion have me going into a different and fun dimension of overdrive, though.
TS7 was nice on the arpeggio run !more bite ,,when you play chords through any OD pedal is there one better at sounding mushy than another ? or is it mush snobbery 😇
Joyo is the best. It sings. Been using it for 10 years now. It can be sweet, crunchy, has tons of gain and sustains notes really well. Just listen to the pick attacks on the other pedals and you can hear that the Joyo renders the attacks in a very musical way.
is there a way tp modify a chrous padal to get a un effected signal trough the pedal? I love Chorus in my 3 piece but it messes with my eares, would buy one pedal without doubt.
Good vid. I rem a long time back hearing a ts 8 & a 9? I thought there was some difference. I also have always heard that the TS is analog. I was surprised when a fella told the difference between the 2 was a different sound chip? Can they really be built around a sound chip & be analog?
This chip is not a computer chip it's an operational amplifier (ask wikipedia). In case of the tube screamer it's a 4558 general purpose dual operational amplifier.
Thanks Fabian's WS. Appreciate the come back. You are many steps beyond my comprehension. Some one else told me, "well it is an analog pathway." Whatever that might mean. I enjoyed Brian's vid here but most of these all sound itchy & scratchy to me. Thanks again!
I can't hear a difference. Like others have said, get the TS pedal with best build quality, best value, preferred type of bypass etc. You can go mad if you try to pick the best one by tone alone. Joyo VOD, Behringer TO800, Mooer Green Mile, Mosky Mini Screamer and TS Mini are all fine options. I've ordered a 2nd hand Joyo for £20.
I had about 10 different tube screamers from the Joyo to new TS9, and nearly all at the same time, when you play them at home you can hear difference, but honestly not much usually about 5% difference, live wouldnt notice it in a band situation. I sold all except the TS9, Joyo was good though but I am a big Stevie Ray Vaughan fan so......... Must say I didnt mind the Biyang tone OD8 Xdrive either with changable chip.
To my ears the TS9 and the J&H were the winners; there was the clarity and mid-bump you want from a tube screamer. I could hear the character of the guitar more. The others seemed to muffle it (losing high end?) to varying degrees.
TheBigGuppy my experience with clean blend in tubescreamer type pedals has been horrible. The JHS Moonshine is a TS type pedal and that has a clean blend. The more you turn up the clean blend the crappier the pedal sounds. When the clean blend is at 0 it sounds the best. In my opinion clean blend on OD pedals are useless unless you are a using it with a bass and you want to retain the low end
I love my Sparkle Drive and Sparkle Drive Mods. You turn up the clean blend it sounds layered like 2 amps. Which is a cool effect. I run both in original mode one with the Blend off and one at about 1:00.
The Klon and Klones have a hardwired clean blend. The gain knob is a dual ganged pot when you turn down the gain use also increase the clean signal. I wish someone would try to market and Klon with separate pots to see how that works when you go for the layered effect.
*Joyo **1:55*
*Tubulator **2:15*

That Joyo sounded pretty damn good!

Thanks Brian. The best way of doing comparison videos. I wish more demo videos used a looper like that.
First and last (Joyo and Jekyll+Hide) sounded slightly clearer to me. They're all quite similar though.

Okay. 5 x Joyo cost almost the same as a Ts9. Joyo it is.
@cloud chaser At least one ;-)
My TS7 does same thing I put duct tape over the switch peg to make it longer and it worked .
The biggest difference I hear is not the tone, it's the hiss/hum/noise level. The Joyo seems much quieter than all the others. Is that just becasue it's first in the chain?
Joyo overdrives run very clean. I've got about 90% of their overdrives and have only hit one "noisy" one - the Hot Plexi.
They compress differently, too.
I picked up a TS7 not knowing very much about them. It doesn't look cool, but I like the way it sounds. Thanks for the video.
As soon as the band kicks in, there is zero discernable difference (barely any difference in this demo ).
...and the audience who came to have fun wouldn't care either way. Although the studio might be different. I do wonder in these days of so much choice do we spent too long procrastinating and not enough time doing. (Is that my guilty conscience speaking?) :)
Well, as the band kicks in, there is no discernable difference whether it is a tubescreamer or Klon, or King of Tone or whatever :)
Chris Franklyn A lot of people do so, it's very common, usually (not always) it's the amateurs who care about their gear and tone nuances the most. The real pro session musicians I've seen were quite relaxed about what's available and sounded fantastic on just about anything. your right, But pedals and most guitar gear is an investment and retain at least %50 of its value so shop smart and lose little.
I agree. The difference is so small. Some are more compressed and have a little smoother distortion. Some are slightly more open and have more top end sizzle. I got the Joyo since it's so cheap and a great starting point for TS style pedals. I paid like 28 bucks new :)

The only one that stuck out as different was the Joyo. Something about the lower mids that was different from the others.
I prefer the clean tone of the amp without tube screamer 😉

Honestly likes the mids and clarity of the ts9 the best. Some of the others sounded muffled and/or scooped.
Also, would have liked to see the clarksdale or whatever your fave TS type pedal you make in there, just for sound comparison.
Why do you have to lift the lid on the TS7?
Good video, miss the sd-1 just for curiosity.
Love your stuff Do you ever play the Major scale?
Combinations of it. It’s not scales, it’s playing around chord structures.
sounded super good. which type of amp did you use and was it very loud?
Exist a visual tool to "listen" the sound? To see a diference, in harmonics or something? Regards.
“Spice” is a software that many use to look at eq, phase relationships, etc that may be what you are looking for
where is that vid that shows how to change the tone of a distortion pedal I cant think of the name
I'm torn between the Maxon od808 & Ibanez ts9
I liked the Joyo the best, actually.
You got to try GFS Classic Greenie
Expected results, but hey... if the paint job or name on a pedal inspires me to create more or play better, i'll take it.
Are these chords that you are playing here from a song? If yes then what song?
I had about 10 different tube screamers from the Joyo to new TS9, and nearly all at the same time, when you play them at home you can hear difference, but honestly not much usually about 5% difference, live wouldnt notice it in a band situation. I sold all except the TS9, Joyo was good though but I am a big Stevie Ray Vaughan fan so......... Must say I didnt mind the Biyang tone OD8 Xdrive either with changable chip.
Isn’t the VS Jekyll & Hyde based on the ShredMaster?
Hey Brian, "it's better to put zinc carbon Vs Alkaline/lithium batteries in fuzz pedals." Tru dat or bullshit?
That Maxon is the best, and they made the original Tube Screamer.
i ve heard no difference at all. Have you, Brian?
Where you using good headphones or a crappy laptop speakers? I did feel some to sound a bit muddier.
nonpoint666rocks
I listened to this on my car’s stereo system. They’re pretty damn identical.
I think the main turndown in Joyo pedals is their look. These yellow knobs make it look like that cheap toy your uncle bought you from the 1$ store.
Yes, as long as we’re talking the standard three-knob type.
Hi Brian, Thanks! Which scale do you play at 1:43?
I'm just playing around the chord, but it's sort of a cross between a blues scale and e dorian
Thanks Brian!
To my ears the TS9 and the J&H were the winners; there was the clarity and mid-bump you want from a tube screamer. I could hear the character of the guitar more. The others seemed to muffle it (losing high end?) to varying degrees.
Finally! An answer to a question of the ages
Well. They sound the f***ing same.
The newest Jekyll & Hyde has a clean blend control. All TS pedals should have this. All ODs should have this. Dirt pedals are compressors.
TheBigGuppy I actually have a buddy who swears by the Sparkle Drive. Sadly I haven't tried it out. I heard it's great
The Klon and Klones have a hardwired clean blend. The gain knob is a dual ganged pot when you turn down the gain use also increase the clean signal. I wish someone would try to market and Klon with separate pots to see how that works when you go for the layered effect.
i think the VFE Merman did this?
Any love for the east river drive? What amp did you use?
I need to buy one, sadly I don't own one. I used the Wampler Bravado going into an impulse response for the cab.
