I don't care what anybody says, Roland has done an amazing job with these things. I've got the s-1 and, truthfully, it's my most used synth. I imagine that this one and the drum machine are equally useful. And the fact that Roland has given us the option to buy into a larger setup incrementally is an amazing benefit to any musicians who don't want to spend, or don't have, thousands of dollars to plunk down at a time. You can scale your setup one piece of equipment at a time, and at a pace that works for you. And at each stage of that journey, you've got very useful instruments with which you can do a lot of interesting music.
I just wish that these had been around when I was starting out. My advice to any person who wants to get the most bang for their buck early on is to, at the very least, get the s-1 and then buy into the rest of them over time.
As for myself, I had already purchased a Circuit Tracks and needed another synth to run with it. The S-1 fit that role perfectly. But if I had not owned the Tracks at the time, I might easily have gone with a DAW-less Roland setup and been very productive for a long time, maybe forever.

You touched on it a bit here, if you have a single chord (no variation on it) as your first and then the last chord in the sequence has variation then when it loops it forces the variation on to that first chord that didn't have it before. I also seem to notice it does that within the sequence, like if I had an 8 step sequence and step 5 had variation but then I wanted step 6 to just be a chord with not variation, the step 5 variation still carries over onto step 6 even though thats not what I want. How do we stop that? How do we just put a chord (no variation on it) into the middle of a sequence and not have it effected by the variation that came before it? EDIT- I see @hyperyt6730 figured out a way around this lower in the comments there, but there has to be a more stream lined version of just keeping your chord uneffected than that right?

    Nice video, thanks !
I repost here a comment, for the "problem" you point at 21'20" (when the sequence restart with a step without style/variation on, it takes the last style/variation from prvious step, i.e. the last in your case), you can manage it like that :
To do that you've to set a style/variation for the step you want "unchanged", but you've to choose the right one. And, it's cool because it exists: these are style 3 / variation 1 to 12, depending of the length (Beat parameter in menu) setting of your step.
For example, if your steps length is set to 4 beats (i.e. 4 quarter note or one measure), you could use the style 3/ variation 2 if you want that the chord (or note) is "simply" playing for the length of the step, independantly of the style/variation setting of other steps.
So, you can use for example these "standard" settings of style/variation for living a step unchanged, depending of your step length setting:
Step length 8 beat (2 measure or 8 quarter note in 4/4): 3/1
Step length 4 beat (1 measure or 4 quarter note in 4/4): 3/2
Step length 2 beat (1/2 measure or 2 quarter note in 4/4): 3/3
Step length 1 beat (1/4 measure or 1 quarter note in 4/4): 3/4
Step length 1/2 beat (1/8 measure or 1 eighth note in 4/4): 3/5
Step length 1/4 beat (1/16 measure or 1 sixteenth note in 4/4): 3/6
For odd beat (triplet), see other variations in same style (n°3).
More widely, I recommand to explore style 3 to 5 for different beat combinaison per step (see manual), according to your steps length, it's very fun, this little box is a beast :)
Important: if you change the variation while playing a sequence, you've to restart the sequence to avoid strange behaviour.

Thank you, this works, it's just wild you have to do that just to make you chord uneffected by the variation.

Right on time! I bought a SP404 MK2 2 weeks ago and yesterday i received 250 euro's in giftcards from the shop i order from because i left them a review! already wasted 100 euro's on the official 404 travel bag, ripcord cable and rechargeable batteries.... leaves me with 150 left and dont know what to buy 😁 So i was indeed looking at these Roland devices and i must say they are a good candidate to be my next purchase!

Hello could you explain how can we use S-1 or T-8 (bass) with J-6 in terms of using j-6’s 64 bar. You know s-1 is limited with 4 bar (64 step) and T-8 is limited 2 bar (32 step) so if we can use j-6 sequencer for writing T-8’bass pattern it would be very nice

Thanks for another great in-depth walk-trough video 🙏🏻 Tip: If you want to see what notes are in a chord, you can also select a Step and (temporarily) disable the CHORD button. The J-6 then lights the involved keys, but you should keep in mind the selected root key. This only seems to work with information in the Steps, so not when playing live. It also doesn’t show it in realtime when playing, you manually have to select each step. So yes, the Scaler app is better and richer, but then why using a J-6 anyway…? 🤷‍♂️ (except for demo purposes)

Thank you for this! Excellent! This device is exactly what I needed for a small simple sequencer with my looping setup. I've encountered one problem I can't figure out regarding Sounds associated/saved with a Pattern. All my Patterns have Sounds with edits to them, they are all recalled fine when I change from Pattern to Pattern. But if I'm on Pattern 3-1, then choose a different Sound, when I move onto Pattern 3-2 it does not recall the Sound I saved with 3-2. The fix is to reboot the unit and it's fine. For anyone, Is there a solution to this without a reboot? Thanks!
