Hi Mark, this is a very well done tutorial. I have followed it step by step ;) and this is where I really learned how to sequence on the S-1. I also own the J-6 and from what I learned from you, I have now a pattern that plays the harmony in sync with the S-1. All that because of you. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for your kind comment - I'd love to hear it performed with the J-6 as well! I'm working on a few more tutorials right now -- the next one should come out in about a week/week and a half
@@markyounq I’m looking forward to watching the next one you do. I also will try implementing your other tutorials that I’ve been watching for some time. Thank again.
Just saw this after replying to your other comment -- thank you so much! I'm glad you liked the tutorial, let me know if there are any specific topics or songs you'd be interested in me making a tutorial for.
@ Hi, Mark. You are welcome. I have started to learn a bit of music theory by myself (from books and tutorials on RUclips) right after I bought the S-1 and then later, the J-8 and the T-8. I also bought a small Arturia keyboard controler. I enjoy learning music this way and finding good sources of information and inspiration is important. Your work certainly adds to this enjoyment. I will let you know if something comes to mind as a topic for a tutorial. Thanks for this offer and everything else.
Thanks for sharing. I have two S-1s and am enjoying making ambient tapestries with the them. But you have tapped into a whole new section of their abilities! I am going to be studying your video.
Thank you for watching! Two S-1s is an interesting setup - are you using two for extra voices or do you patch them differently? You could create some interesting duophonic patches in unison mode which would probably sound really big.
@@markyounq I have tried many experiments. Detuning one in relationship to the other and tweaking them to a variation, like more res or the envelope filter dialed differently, creating a rich texture, and then running every through an Eventide Space Reverb in Shimmer Mode with pitch decay and harmonic fifth spacing. Another experiment is to have the bpm at 40 and the other at 80 bpm (or 60 bpm and 120 bpm). It has an effect similar to playing notes one octave apart, and then doing the Space Reverb.
I recently got a J-6 and am mixing it into one of the S-1s and the combination is creating very good compositions. The J-6 chord progressions actually use some of the effects of the S-1 and this allows the chords to blend with the S-1 sequence very well.
Fantastic video with this in depth explanation. Just got this synth and this tutorial helped a lot (btw how did you record the audio? Just going into an interface?). Also the song re-production is superb. Keep it up!
Thank you! I'm glad to hear my tutorials are helping people. I have the audio out running into a Zoom F1 -- then I either feed it directly into Reaper or just record directly to the Zoom.
Just a heads up that your gain is very low. When you right click on your YT video on a pc and choose Stats for Nerds, it shows your db is around -18. You should shoot for as close to 0 as possible to be as loud as possible. Anything louder than 0 and YT may cut your audio and make it worse than when you started. I use Audacity (free on pc and mac) and "select all" for the track, then go to apply compression with makeup gain to 0 db and it's always perfect. If you get any clipping, you can then apply a limiter with soft clip.
Thanks - I actually boosted the gain right before exporting, but you're right it's still too low. I read that youtube normalizes things to -12, and tried to just get it in the ballpark of that. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for sharing, I learn more about this unit every time I pick it up. Been having a blast, amazing value for $200... (I'm guessing the bottom has fallen out of the Volca market!)
Hi Mark, at 6:18 you are able to scroll while hearing the steps, mine is not doing that. Is there a special setting to make it do that ? I feel like it should do it right out of the box
@@markyounq it ended up being the firmware. I bought the unit new , production date of Jan 2024 , but it came with 1.01. Roland said that is not unusual. 1.02 fixed it.
This is awesome, thank you for sharing this. I must try this as it's a beautiful piece. Not long had my S1 so very much a learner on it. It's great how you break down the settings and values. Do you have or can you share any other pieces? 🔥💥🎛🎶🎹❤️
@markyounq No worries mate. I put your sequence into my s1 and it sounds great. So pleased with the turn out. Would love to do a few more. Thanks for sharing.🎶🔥🎹
Something sounds off, both in this performance and my carbon copy here on my S-1. But I’m 99% certain this is in 3/3 (it’s basically a waltz!). Anyone have any ideas why some of the held notes sound truncated? Problem with the sequencer design?Still, really nice, clear explanation- really helping my exploration of this amazing little synth.
@@robertking9658 I'm no expert, but I believe that the G-note that's played on oct-1 from step 12 should end at step 22 and not 23, because step 23 plays note C on oct0. I ended te G-note on step 22 instead and started playing the A-note on step 23 and it sounds correct to me.
Yes, it most definitely does! At work I use the term "environment" a lot so it slips in accidentally. In a couple meetings I've even said "envelope" to much confusion for my coworkers
I appreciate the feedback and idea! The performance bit is really just supposed to be part of the tutorial -- for the original full performance you can watch here ruclips.net/video/BZ9X98BrRFo/видео.htmlsi=gtVKpuEA6-P1sSbQ

Never tried programming a pattern into mine- and now I’ve seen it done I probably never will. Life’s way too short…
It's not the easiest sequencer, but I don't mind it for simple things
ha ha
i tend to press record & play the notes in and hope for the best
😂… there’s more than one way but yeah the step way can be tedious with long patterns
Thanks so much for making time to share so much. You’re the best!
