10:08 another slight benefit to wonder skin is that your opponent won’t try to status you at all if you have Good as Gold because it’ll just outright fail, but if you have wonder skin they could try to status you and miss, wasting their turn instead of using an attack
@@2EntireLegs I think I would notice if an opponent had Sand Veil and not Wonder Guard. It provides immunity, WG does not. And WG clearly states when it triggers I'm pretty sure. @@apandawithnodirectionsinli1327 I think the keyword here is "try". An opponent would "try" to status wonder skin instead of good as gold. Personally, that's a dumb way to say that wonder skin is better than good as gold just because sometimes they will do something that might fail.
@@2EntireLegs The way I see it it's kind of like trying to force your opponent into a situation where they have to use Focus Blast, or other low accuracy moves, several times. Now that's where the original comment falls apart because at that point, why not just make them have to use low accuracy moves with Good as Gold? And yeah, as I said. I do agree, saying WS can be better because in a perfect scenario it "might" do better than Gold is kind of bad because that's ignoring the times your Pokemon got status-ed and Gold got a miss anyways. And that's not even mentioning what you just said, it's ignoring any time they attacked anyways.
Let me rephrase what u were on to so it can kind of actually make sense. Hypothetically, if a pokemon has the option to have wonder skin and another ability thats equally competitive, the opponent needs to guess which one it is, if they aren't running around with trace or skill swap, or if the other ability is super easy to spot. good as gold is easier to spot than wonder skin. If u use toxic on it for example, 95% of the time, the opponent will know the enemy has good as gold. And the remaining 5% they wud still be guessing. However, with wonder skin, u got much lower accuracy so ur going to miss half the time, but the opponent may just think they are unlucky and continue guessing.
When it comes to protecting allies from poison, there are very strict scenarios where your ally would benefit from status, like Guts, where a poison could help. In these scenarios, however, burns would always be preferable due to their lower DMG per turn, which means that the only, extremely specific scenario where Pastel Veil is worse than Immunity, is in a double battle where your partner is a Toxic Boost Zangoose. In the same vein, protecting your ally from sleeping could stop them from clicking a beneficial Rest. Pastel Veil and Sweet Veil can only be STRICTLY better if, and only if they don't check for self procs on status conditions on your allies, since a Toxic Boost Zangoose will always be holding a Toxic Orb, and Rest users want to cause their own sleep.
The only times that poisoning yourself is beneficial comparing to burn are zangoose, poison heal mons, flareon (a fire type guts mons, he cant get burned) and a physical quick feet mon like ursaring
Another important distinction between Air Lock vs. Delta Stream: Air Lock still bypasses the Primals’ weather effects no matter when the Primals switch in, so Rayquaza can still hit Primal Groudon with Surf or Waterfall even if it switches in and activates Desolate Land, but Mega Rayquaza cannot because Desolate Land will still be active and will just replace Delta Stream’s effect.
6:07 Actually, Intrepid Sword cannot be unabled by Neutralizing Gas, while Embody Aspect can, so they have an advantage over the other (But embody aspect is still better in most cases)
Regarding Toxic Boost / Guts (but not Steelworker/Steely Spirit as of now) Actually there is one very specific place where a discrepancy arises between move power and attacking stat: Body Press. Body Press uses the Defense stat for the damage calculation, so boosting the damage will apply to it but not the Attack stat. This can be seen with, for example, Burn vs Intimidate: the former lowers Body Press damage, while the latter doesn't Also, there's another difference between Magnet Pull and Arena Trap that's extremely relevant: Magnet Pull can trap Flying and Levitating mons that are Steel type, such as Corviknight, Skarmory, Celesteela and Bronzong Regardless, this is a great video! It's really interesting to see just how many redundancies and straight-up upgrades there are in Pokemon, and just how many extremely specific things seem to appear out of nowhere to make one trait better than another
Another way that having a status move go last with Mycelium Might could potentially be great: Parting Shot. Slow pivot moves are great, and having one that unblockably lowers attacking stats is even better.
Technically in the older games, there was a difference between insomnia and vital spirit, as vital spirit out of battle increases the amount of higher level Pokémon encounters. Whether that’s better or worse for you depends.
Important distinction for Fur Coat: Fur Coat doesn't "Halve damage from physical moves", it doubles the defense stat, which does do that, but also has other benefits, like halving damage from moves like Psyshock and Psystrike which hit physical defense and not special defense, and doubling the damage of Body Press essentially as if they had Huge Power but just for body press.
Honestly, for both Zacian & Zamazenta. I would say that back in Gen 8, those 2 were on par with the Ogerpon Wellflame & Cornerstone's tera forms, as the dog's ability would activate every time they switched it. But due to Zacian's utter dominance in last gen's VGC series, the dogs got their abilities nerfed for a balancing factor. Sucks that they just redid the dogs ability again when they created Ogerpon's 2 tera forms, but whatever. And yes, I am aware you were judging abilities by "in a vacuum", but incase someone decides to make some sort of correction comment, I'm just gonna leave this here. *oh yeah, like the video btw*
one that is mostly better is earth eater over levitate, while it does more, ground healing rather than an immunity, levitate does also prevent spikes damage and other grounded effects. realistically they're probably about as useful as eachother but in description one has more than the other
Update: NOT THE CASE. I've been informed that Mycelium Might only affects status moves, and the video either didn't mention this or I didn't hear when it did. ----------------------------------------- Mycelium Might, in turn, is better than Stall. ❤ Stall makes you move last in your priority bracket with no other effects, while Mycelium Might, as you explained, makes you move last in your priority bracket _and_ lets you ignore the target's ability.
Not entirely accurate; if something with Stall uses Payback/Avalanche/Revenge, it’s better to go last and boost your odds of getting hit first, and Mycelium Might doesn’t affect these moves because they’re attacks, not status moves.
@dreadfury2485 Oh, I just caught the part about Mycelium Might only affecting status moves. I missed it before because the video itself either failed to specify or did so very offhandedly and missably, and only realized when I read your comment, got confused and double-checked the ability's description in Bulbapedia.
1:00 the only issue with this 'correction' is that the punchglove isn't exclusive to iron fist mons. You could just as easily put a punchglove on a tough claws mon and get a 1.43x boost to punching moves, plus the 1.3x boost to other contact moves
No you cannot, Punching Glove has the additional effect that punching moves will no longer make contact, therefore you are not getting the Tough Claws boost since you are not making contact.
pastel veil and sweet veil arent strictly better because your ally may want to activate rest or poison heal, plus if a sweet veil mon switches in while its ally is asleep, it will be locked into sleep until the sweet veil mon switches out
let’s just take a moment to appreciate the cope of ‘iron fist isn’t worse than tough claws because of the punching glove’ as if an item slot for the sake of 10% damage is a good trade off for a total of 1.02x damage over just using an ability slot
Any ability that is better simply because it also increases attack when something happens may not technically be better in all circumstances because of foul play. If you're not going to use your attack stat, it's typically best to keep it as low as is possible.
Literally the only theoretical in which you'd not want, for example, huge power over intrepid sword, is if you are thrown into the middle of a battle against a foul play pokemon who outspeeds you and can only kill you if your attack stat is juuuuust high enough due to huge power. Which obviously is not a foreseeable event. If you are building a team, even if you KNOW you are going to face a team with a foul play user, and even if your own pokemon has a self-confusing move, you would literally still choose huge power over intrepid sword given the option
One thing I do wanna say though, and I know you put this in the "mostly" better section, but I still dont think its right to say that the "super weather" abilities of the primal legendaries are mostly better because they fulfill entirely different purposes (ie self sufficiency vs. setting up for team). Pokemon like Pelipper and Torkoal would NOT want to trade off their abilities for their "super" variants, in fact it would be a pretty massive downgrade, as being able to switch out and have the weather persist is the only thing that makes those pokemon viable in the first place. Granted, if you give Desolate land to the average self-sufficient fire type pokemon it would completely break the game, but I do think the abilities' use cases are too different to be mentioned here imo.
Something I found out in national dex Ubers, the desolate land ability does proc sun-boosted abilities like chlorophyll and solar power, but it does not proc the protosynthesis ability. This would be a downside in singles but likely an upside in doubles.
Suction cups would be better than guard dog if you were a special attackers who is about to get hit intimidated and then hit by foul play. Same with thermal exchange. Embody aspect doesn’t have 4 different versions, it’s one ability that can boost four different stats. If an ogrepon stone mask wanted attack, then intrepid sword would be better for it than embody aspect which would increase defense because of ogrepons condition of wearing a certain mask
Re some comment corrections: One thing people have to understand when discussing strictly better/worse is that the ability to turn a downside into an upside does not make that strictly worse thing not strictly worse.

Tough claws is combination of iron fist strong jaw sharpness Hadron engine is electric surge with intrepid sword Oricalchum pulse is drought with attack boost Good as gold and Magic bounce js combination of comatose and clear body which block or reflect status conditions and drops respectively Prism Armor full metal body and shadow shied is just better multi scale clear body and solid rock cannot be ignored by mold breaker Shield dust is only blocks secondary effects Purifying salt is water veil immunity limber all in one Arena trap and shadow tag trap Pokémon and prevent switching Desolate land primordial sea is same but evapartion of water and fire moves respectively
also, if the abilities were theoretically put on any mon (like in almost any ability or hackmons for example), teraform zero and embody aspect would only work on stellar terapagos and the respective terastalized ogerpon forme respectively, if given to any other mon, they would simply not work.
@@otozinclus3593 filter vs prism armor for example: lets say you have a move like destiny bond and your opponent has mold breaker and a super effective move, in that situation you would want filter. there are niche situations like this for every ability (besides ones that are completely identical, and even thoose im not sure about)
TERASHELL AND MULTISCALE, TERASHELL makes the first move it's user receives at full health not very effective regardless of type, while this is useless if you get hit by an attack you already resisted, when getting hit by multi hit moves MULTISCALE just works in the first hit, while TERASHELL will reduce the damage of ALL HITS
not exactly, because if you hit tera shell user with not very effective move (i know it's impossible with terapagos, but in theory) it will take regular resisted damage, while multiscale will take half than that. another difference is when using tinted len pokemon on tera shell will do regular damage, but not to multiscale
People really said X ability isn’t better than Y ability because Y ability is only on A Pokémon which is really bad, while X ability is on Pokémon like B, C, and D which are really good? The Pokémon the ability is on is counter for the Pokémon, not the ability
Hmmm I am looking at abilities that seem underpowered for no good reason to buff for a fan project. And funny enough this video doesn’t help that much since a lot of the worse abilities are still good
If you have contrary though, you can’t set up with moves like calm mind or bulk up since they will lower your stats. I feel like it is too different from mirror armor to compare it
Tera shell is strictly better than multiscale. Instead of halving damage, it makes the incoming move a resisted move. The 1st difference is that Tera shell can turn a weakness into a resistance. A Pokémon with Tera Shell active has no weaknesses. The 2nd difference is that its better against multi hit moves like icicle spear. Multiscale only halves the damage of the first hit of a multi hit move, since you're not at full hp anymore when you take the 2nd hit. In contrast, tera shell makes all hits a resisted hit. Finally, tera shell is not strictly better or worse than shadow shield. While turning all hits of a damaging move into resisted hits is better than halving damage of the first hit, it can still be ignored by mold breaker, unlike shadow shield.
Technically, Tera Shell isn't strictly better than multiscale - Tera Shell does not reduce the damage of attacks the pokemon is already resistant to, while Multiscale does.
@@augustrehm7810That's true but at least with Multiscale you can take a bigger chunk of health with super-effective damage. With Tera Shell everything gets resisted so the typing won't matter anyway

Well, double battles... Otherwise, someone else here said it best. Drizzle and PS/Drought and DL function completely differently on a team. And thus, while in a vacuum, the super weathers are mostly better. They do fulfill different niches in real game scenarios. Also, if you want to mention Swift Swim, then I bring up Trick Room. Or an opposing Swift Swimmer, or a Sun/Sandstorm team who cancels out the regular weather(which are far more common than super weathers), and heck. Drought and Desolate Land, why separate Drizzle and Primordial Sea? Chlorophyll users exist too. And if Groudon is on the enemy field while you can't set up Drizzle, what are you going to do? Again, I think if we are going to bring up SS, we should recognize that weathers and super weathers do fulfill niches. Otherwise in a vacuum, super weathers are better unless the cancelled type is one of your important coverage moves, for the most part.

Another perk for Clear Body/White Smoke/Full Metal Body vs Mirror Armor is Sticky Web. Clear Body + friends are immune to webs but mirror body users aren’t (doesn’t matter in real games cause corviknight is also flying but it’s vacuum)
True
Just a suggestion but u should start putting pokémon sprites pictures or screenshots from the anime on each ability your talking about, it will help your audience stay more engaged brother
Huh, I always thought heatproof gave a complete fire immunity... Kind of a misleading name. Now I know why I never see it ran on Bronzong.
You must've been unlucky then. Many people play Heatproof Bronzong because the opponent won't risk wasting a turn using Ground moves anyway
Damn I thought Mycelium might made status moves always hit or smth (guess bc I mostly think of spore) but yeah this is just a bad ability. Does it even allow for sporing of grass types?
It only ignores abilities so no. It doesn't get through items either
They should have made that Mycelium Might ignores Abilities AND accuracy checks AT ALL TIMES, because why the fuck am I forced to move last, tank a potentially strong hit and then miss my Leech Seed anyways?? 💢
In Singles, Steelworker and Steely Spirit function essencially the same way. However, in Doubles, Steely Spirit powers up the ally too.
I thought primodial sea was just fancy drizzle. I didnt know it had a second effect
That second effect barely matters because you’re usually out of your mind if you’re throwing a Fire-type attack at Kyogre in the first place.
@@dreadfury2485 that is why i didnt know it had a second effect
I have a question regarding the section with Magnet Pull, Arena Trap, and Shadow Tag. Are ghost types immune to trapping in general, or only trapping abilities. Asking because I might know what Mean Look Crobat is going to do today...
Trapping in general
All trapping, be it Shadow Tag or Fire Spin or Mean Look
@@supersims796 I see. Thanks for the clarification!
Are ghost/steels immune to magnet pull?
Yes, because they are ghost types.
“Is ground/flying immune to electric moves?”
That’s basically what you just asked
Tough claws is combination of iron fist strong jaw sharpness
Hadron engine is electric surge with intrepid sword
Oricalchum pulse is drought with attack boost
Good as gold and Magic bounce js combination of comatose and clear body which block or reflect status conditions and drops respectively
Prism Armor full metal body and shadow shied is just better multi scale clear body and solid rock cannot be ignored by mold breaker
Shield dust is only blocks secondary effects
Purifying salt is water veil immunity limber all in one
Arena trap and shadow tag trap Pokémon and prevent switching
Desolate land primordial sea is same but evapartion of water and fire moves respectively
Desolate Land is still good because of the water evaporating effect but Primordial Sea always seemed like a downgrade to Drizzle
technecally, all abilities have atleast 1 situation where you would want the "infuerior" ability, even if its incredibly niche
also, if the abilities were theoretically put on any mon (like in almost any ability or hackmons for example), teraform zero and embody aspect would only work on stellar terapagos and the respective terastalized ogerpon forme respectively, if given to any other mon, they would simply not work.
No, that is the point of the video. Some do not
@@otozinclus3593 filter vs prism armor for example: lets say you have a move like destiny bond and your opponent has mold breaker and a super effective move, in that situation you would want filter. there are niche situations like this for every ability (besides ones that are completely identical, and even thoose im not sure about)
TERASHELL AND MULTISCALE, TERASHELL makes the first move it's user receives at full health not very effective regardless of type, while this is useless if you get hit by an attack you already resisted, when getting hit by multi hit moves MULTISCALE just works in the first hit, while TERASHELL will reduce the damage of ALL HITS
I guess you could also say As One is better than Moxie and Soul Heart (and Beast Boost?)
Nice
Thanks
Illuminate is a strictly worse version of run away because furret gets run away and I like furret
Would tera shell not be a better multiscale sunce it makes the moves not very effective instead of halving damage?
not exactly, because if you hit tera shell user with not very effective move (i know it's impossible with terapagos, but in theory) it will take regular resisted damage, while multiscale will take half than that.
another difference is when using tinted len pokemon on tera shell will do regular damage, but not to multiscale
i dont get why they just wont give toadscruel a lower speed stat instead of being handicapped when using non-spore status moves
Because that’s boring and repetitive?
Nerf Spore to get low priority. There
People really said X ability isn’t better than Y ability because Y ability is only on A Pokémon which is really bad, while X ability is on Pokémon like B, C, and D which are really good?
The Pokémon the ability is on is counter for the Pokémon, not the ability
Drizzrl is better then Primordial sea because you can switch into a Swift swim user and outrun most pokemon, while Primorial Sea is far more limited
Hmmm I am looking at abilities that seem underpowered for no good reason to buff for a fan project. And funny enough this video doesn’t help that much since a lot of the worse abilities are still good
10:03 Wouldnt mirror armor's effects apply to contrary too?
If you have contrary though, you can’t set up with moves like calm mind or bulk up since they will lower your stats. I feel like it is too different from mirror armor to compare it
Air Lock/Cloud Nine nullify super weather too. So a water move with these abilities can hit under the effect of Desolate Land.
The idea of a Psyduck using Water Gun under Desolate Land when Kyogre can't use Origin Pulse is hilarious
Hug power and guts
Correction on your correction: iron fist and the punching glove's boosts don't stack. For. Some reason. It's kind of baffling lol
Correction on your correction of my correction: it does. Check again on bulbapedia. They used to not stack and then it was changed, so as of current they do stack
Sick pfp
All i have to say is:
Slow start and truant
well baked body > any other ability to resist/immune fire.
Flash fire can be better but it depends

Drizzrl is better then Primordial sea because you can switch into a Swift swim user and outrun most pokemon, while Primorial Sea is far more limited
