Let’s hope these players can get scouted and play for a good club then head back and play for there countries. World Rugby needs the islands to thrive. If it doesn’t happen Rugby will continue downwards internationally and all these island boys will go off at play NRL. (Re-edit) Love your work world rugby please keep up the good work with these island nations!!
grumpy sod The issue with that is there is no money in the islands. There is plenty of talent and athleticism in the islands but no money. It’s not commercially viable, otherwise it’d be done already. That’s why they go to Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and just about every other country.
Don't be fooled. World rugby is just trying to develop talent that could end up in Europe and play for Europe's national sides, and leave the islands with nothing.
It's great seeing this as a start. If World Rugby is able to create a draft that all the clubs in the world discuss on who they will choose. In that way, there'll be an increase of the benefit for the local boys especially in salary.
World Rugby pretends to help the Pacific islands, but in reality, they are just trying to recruit for the national sides of Europe. Recruiting for overseas clubs to give islanders a chance is just a pretext to conceal the ulterior motive I've mentioned already. After all, World Rugby is predominantly European. The guys in this vid may be going to NZ and Aus clubs, but they could end up in Europe, and the same can be said with many more to come in the future. Take note, it only take 3 yrs for an islander to establish residency and become available for selection for an European side, whereas an islander that played for any representative side of NZ and Australia and wants to play for the islands needs to wait longer than 3 yrs. Also, when the olympics committee stipulated that a switch to the islands can be done by just playing one 7s game in the world 7s series, and thus also making them available for 15s, World Rugby stepped in and said you need to play in at least 5 to six games, which was a risk, because playing so many games, you could get hurt before making the world cup in 15s. Such was the case with Nanai Williams when he wanted to represent Samoa at the 2015 world cup. World Rugby acts like it's helping when in fact, it's hurting the islands.
You keep bagging WR but why can't the local island organisations sort themselves out after all these years??? The rugby education in this combine is not rocket science - the island unions should have had there own staff learning about what is required to execute such programmes and then deliver them themselves locally across all teams every season. Heck, even searching RUclips can unearth all the pieces used in this programme from S&C, nutrition to analytics to build something for these players. The simple truth within island unions is the LACK OF TRUST amongst its people and with that missing ingredient goes any chance of working together for the good of the game and the people involved in it.
The islands hurt themselves more than world rugby. Look at Samoa, world rugby and sponsors give them money, next minute “we are broke”. Sort out the corruption and the islands will do well
Actually every single one of these players in this video has their eligibility tied to Fiji, Samoa, or Tonga as they all played in what was considered an "A" team tournament. In fact this entire comment is dripping in total ignorance and victimology.
Sad how we always like to see the negative bits in everything. like my mother always taught me; "if you don't have anything positive to add, shut up". World Rugby, Keep up the good work. ......the only sport played in heaven.
Before viewing the vid I had a negative attitude about this programme : just a cattle call to strip the islands of raw talent to be used and abused by overseas clubs (especially some of the French ones - the horror stories coming out of France smh) After viewing it, I feel more positive. It was good to know that a Pacific Islands Players Association rep was involved to help look out for the players’ interests. The sad reality is that there is not much money, resources or opportunities in the islands for player development, and the chance to earn a living wage from rugby. If one gets the opportunity for development, seize it with both hands and all your toes lol. Good luck to all the players in their future endeavours. Thanks to the programme management and staff for their efforts .
Exactly !! what these islands need is good sponsorship - Fiji has a lot of capable enterpreneurs but hardly any of them would be willing to sponsor these types of programmes - Just needs alot of wlling companies and a good promotional team, should be profitable.
For the players that don’t get scholarships to play at high schools overseas its a great opportunity, to get noticed. In saying that, the lucky ones that get high school scholarships have the advantaged to develop there game a lot faster and get noticed. Once there in the local competition they are fortunate to get high quality standard of coaching at secondary school level. This is evident in nz rugby and they go on playing mitre 10 level or become league converts if they have not been side tract by other influences that will be detrimental to becoming a professional player. Either way good luck and will be following players progress in the future that have made the cut to there adopted clubs. Obvious if they become good enough there alliance will change to become an All BLACK or play for the wallabies.
Maybe money is the problem? a super rugby side is very very expensive. the salaries, the super long haul flights, hotels, meals, medical costs, coaches and staffs, training facilities, youth academies, etc. all those things cost so much especially when you travel regularly to other continents (including some places that are on the other side of the planet!) that's why the japanese are scrapping of the sunwolves. it's stupidly expensive
Just allow the players that The ABs, Australia and any of the tier 1 nations don’t need any more play for their countries man. Jesus stop being greedy.
world rugby is just doing this to develop talent that could eventually end up in Europe and recruit them for a European national side. World rugby just pretends to help Pacific islands, but they've passed many eligibility rules that hurt Pacific islands, while it takes only 3 yrs for islanders to live in Europe and become available for any European national sides. Don't be fooled.
Rugby 360 you don't get it. ...Tier one nations use this tournament to SCOUT Players that they will end up Signing to Professional contracts to play in their respective Unions. From there, those players only need a few years off from playing for island Nations to be eligible to play for 6 Nations, Australia, England, NZ, etc. So say these scouts ear mark a 21 year old for a contract overseas. When they sign, all they need is to sit 3-4 years before they're eligible for another country. By then that player would be in his Prime, 25-26 year old powerhouse playing for France, England, Wales, etc.
There doing the right thing too promote the game, island combined also Sth American combined teams, all they need to do is make all professional rugby players around the world free agents ,make all teams balanced by a governing body, so we can match football, get better games more people through the turnstiles, generate more revenue, when it comes to internationals let all players go back to home unions for world cups ,and make a more enjoyable watching game for all
hhh another window dressing programme,,,The PI country have already got the players to beat any Tier 1 nation as the Mate Ma'a Tonga team had shown against NZ,,,the blocking barriers is the eligibility rule,,,just remove the eligibility rule then its game on.
Hulihuli 'o e Vaotamanu wrong sport mate. If you remove the eligibility rules then you would see all the island player jump ship to the European teams. Besides all these players aren’t eligible for any other nation because they have already played for their countries B team
hhh if the rugby board removes the eligibility rules,,,the PI team like Tonga n Fiji will get stronger and blew the European teams off the park lol :) :)
Hulihuili, Rugby 360 is just a world racism -- oh, I mean world rugby patsy. He makes these dumb replies to defend his precious world racism -- oh, sorry, I meant world rugby. Why would islanders jump ship to europe if their Pacific heritage is more than enough to allow them to play for the islands within a year or two? On the other hand, it should take longer for islanders to join a European side since they have no blood connection to Europe. There is no point in world rugby pumping millions of funds into Pacific rugby when their eligibility rules defeats that purpose.
Samoa Moni you really are slow hey, money! These players need have families to feed and the euro nations pay a lot more. You can’t blame them either. Oh and before you start calling me racist, I’m Samoan too. Im an islander too I just choose not to be a victim and blame everyone else for my problems
Rugby 360, I'm not playing the victim, im simply stating the facts. So I'm not the one being slow here. Do you have a problem with facts? If islanders choose to play for europe, that's fine, but at least they would have more than one option. And if you haven't heard the latest news, guys like Vito, Nonu and Sopoaga want to play for Samoa, but it takes longer for them to switch over to the islands with which they have blood ties, whereas it only takes 3 yrs for islanders to establish residency in europe and play for a european side. Get the picture? It's not nuclear science.
Not sure what super rugby teams you mean. Those rugby players will need to prove themselves in club rugby and provisional in NZ first before they will get a look in I'm not sure about Australia on how they will do it. Plenty of PI players in club rugby in Auckland alone of the same standard.
@@terrencefairhurst3813 True, NZ, And Aus. Have been the only hope for PI teams to get players. Fiji, Samoa and Tonga have there best players picked up by a rich club team or another country. When there gone NZ and Aus has been the biggest help in getting good rugby players wherever.
scouting 4 super rugby teams lol..recruiting is obviously sounded ! they might end up playing rugby league instead..haven't heard of this Pacific combine programme really !
I would say, fairness in the selection process and transparency would be the main factor for having foreign coaches involved. That way the three Islands know that there is no favoritism within the office as they are all outsiders and neutral.
The Pacific islands should dump rugby union all together. Move on to the NRL or Rugby league. The island teams have better players and better support. Lets build off that and leave rugby union.
Rugby 360 dump rugby union. Forget it. It a loss cause. League Pacific teams look way better and financially sustained. Union stil stuck or going backwards in the islands.
epa tongan look way better because there is only 3 tier 1 nations, one being a country with only 1 pro team. Besides they’ve only won 1 game against NZ and that’s it. Financial stable? Based on what? 1 game every year in Sydney thats organised and paid for by the NRL.
Dumping rugby union means less opportunities to make it big, Rugby or league it doesn't matter its about giving pacific islanders more and more opportunities close minded fool.
Jamac007 Rugby union can go to Africa to find some potential talent. Tonga, Samoa and Fiji are just setting themselves up for failure. Most of those rugby players will be taken by European clubs or japanese club team. Sign a contract making them unavailable to represent there countries. What we thought was gonna make these island team stronger are just BS. There just feeders to boast up the comps where ever. Forget that.
The talent depth in the Pacific is amazing.
It's time for an island team to join the super rugby in the SH.
If the Sunwolves can be included, so should a PI team.
grumpy sod The issue with that is there is no money in the islands. There is plenty of talent and athleticism in the islands but no money. It’s not commercially viable, otherwise it’d be done already. That’s why they go to Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and just about every other country.
Cones down to money lol
This is awesome, hope WR will continue this workshop consistently.

God bless them boys and their career.

You keep bagging WR but why can't the local island organisations sort themselves out after all these years??? Eoin Collins, what has been changed to 5 yrs?
For a period of time there was the Pacific Islanders.
Is this an annual event ? If the answer is yes than a lot of players from these three nations are going to benefit.
Absolutely a brilliant concept to explore and nurture natural talents of the Islands... Proud and so looking forward to the future
This is amazing 👌
Thank you World Rugby
I see a few Fiji Drua players who are currently smashing The NRC
good to see Potu Leavasa and Isi Fatani... two pacific rugby warriors from the mid 90s
hopefully, in the next stages......next year onwards, players from other Pacific Island countries can be a part of this.....
Pacific Islands should have a super-team like the British and Irish Lions, go on tour every 4 years
Sadly, the Pacific Islands don't have the financial backing like the Lions...great concept though.
Sad how we always like to see the negative bits in everything. like my mother always taught me; "if you don't have anything positive to add, shut up". World Rugby, Keep up the good work.

Sports is not played in heaven bro.
How do you know mate.
Why don't they just make Pro Rugby Competition in the Pacific? Japan, Samoa,Tonga,Fiji, Singapore, Malaysia,China, South Korea etc..
Who’s going to fund it?
Rugby 360 Donald Trump
what a superb job! keep working mates! next step is to make a combine like that on africa. cheers

Love it!
Give the Islands a combined super rugby team.
It's about to go down
Please give Pacific islands a chance to play in a super rugby...if sunwolves can why can't us???
