    A tip for wiring coming from the outside, going to an interior (dry) section: Make a droop loop. At 8:14, that cable goes straight into the wiring gland, coming from a higher place. Wires tend to collect and guide water. In theory, that gland should hold out that water, but nothing is perfect. If you instead make the cable droop to below the gland, and then go back up into it, the gland no longer is the lowest point, so water will go to the bottom of the droop loop, and drip off, instead of following the wire to the gland, and trying to get in there.
    Again, the gland should hold out water, and it probably will, but it never hurst to have two layers of protection instead of one. Just some good practice IMO.

    Love the build! I'd recommend you try loading the Smart on backwards to get the majority of it's weight in front of the axle.

    • @georgegooge8212
      @georgegooge8212 2 года назад +2

      Going on where the engine is in the Smart, it's centre of gravity is close to where his trailer axle is. Putting it on backwards would put most of the weight too far forward

    I've had great results out of the Slam Specialties airbags. They seem to be honestly rated for weight capacity. The RE6 and RE7 bags have a 3" collapsed height (with an internal bumpstop) and will fully extend to 10.5" and 11 respectively".
    They are just about the gold standard in the minitruckin community (along with the viair 480c compressors unless you run an engine driven compressor).
    Beautiful build, and I'm looking forward to more projecct videos in the future!

    • @VinyB57
      @VinyB57  3 года назад +2

      Somebody suggested that manufacturer to me too! Did a bit of research and the RE 8 seems even a better fit for the price, the size and the capacity! Thanks for the advice, now that 2 guys from the mini truck community pointed out that company, I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet! 👍👍👍

    Love your build! I also use a too small winch on my car trailer so I add a snatch block and have the winch cable double back to a large eye hook mounted next to the winch. Makes the 2500lbs winch behave like it’s significantly larger

    • @VinyB57
      @VinyB57  3 года назад +9

      That's was recommanded in the winch brochure...didn't had the time to do it, not sure yet if I'll use it, it's already really slow, but maybe in the futur! 🤷‍♂️ Thanks for the comment!

    I like the drop deck trailer. Only thing I might would do differently is add a piece of 3/8” chain by the airbags in case one failed while traveling. Two inches of slack in the chains with the trailer at ride height would allow the suspension to work but not allow the trailer to slam down if one of the bags failed or the air line got ripped off

    • @VinyB57

      These type of air bags are common on semi truck suspension so I would not have concern of failure. With proper periodic inspection as on any trailer. Especially if they are of a good quality brand should not have many issues. Only suggestion I would make would be a stop block to limit compression of the airbags when totally deflated during loading and unloading to save wear and tear on the bags. My 2 cents Very enjoyable project to watch glad the algorithm brought this video up.... definitely a like and subscribe.

      Suspension normally has a rubber bump stop at the end of its travel, something like that might be prudent?

    Love your trailer sir. My only recommendations are first I would add a wireless winch controller too your winch and use the cabled one for backup purpose. would make loading easier. the second is weld on some D-ring shackles or even mount an etrax system to give it some more strapping locations. the final thing i would do is in your open center location. add a storage box for straps, chains and tie-downs. really more just some accessorizing ideas. Otherwise like i said awesome trailer sir. cant wait for you to post plans. I like to build one for hauling my four wheelers. the easy on easy off functionality would be awesome.

    Using the 120v with the sine inverter is a really great idea. The 12v compressors are really overpriced and have tiny little pistons that wear out. The versatility of the inverter and being able to use the compressor are really making me reconsider making my next trailer with an air suspension. I still don't like having another battery to maintain, so I've been thinking of just hand/drill winch powering it. Good job.

    I absolutely love this trailer project! I literally designed my own version of an air suspension trailer very similar to yours several years back. I just never had the means to actually build it. So it just made it so satisfying seeing your build come together.
    The only thing I would mention is that most suspension air springs are rated for much higher pressures than your light duty compressor can produce. I come from the minitruck world and it is not uncommon for guys to be running 200+ psi systems. Viair actually makes a few 12v 200psi 100% duty cycle compressors (like the 480C and 485C) that would be perfect for this application.

    Hey Viny, buy a drop hitch for your SUV and it will help level your trailer without making structural changes. On my car hauling trailer, when I pull it with my 4 wheel drive GMC K1500 pickup truck, I have to use a 5.5" drop hitch. When I pull it with my Chevy Express 3500 (1 ton van) I use a 3.5" drop hitch. You'll just have to measure for what you need, but you probably will only need a 2.5" or 3.5" drop hitch to help level that trailer up.

    I've been working on a design of a simple off-road camp trailer that drops down to the ground for a wheelchair user. Lifts and ramps take up much needed room and add unneeded weight. Your single axle air suspension system appears to be a great fit to my project. Only now I have to do the math to add roughly double the lift height of your trailer. Way above my paygrade. lol Great series, your videos enjoyable to watch ...

  • @alanmcgowan3457
    @alanmcgowan3457 3 года назад +3

    Love the concept, I collect/deliver ride-on lawnmowers and we built our own bespoke trailer - finally finishing it last year. But the rear our trailer is too low to the ground for some roads I travel on (Irish roads are nowhere near as your good Canadian roads) where the grass grows in the centre of them.
    Might look at installing an airbag system during the winter when we quieten down, one that will give me lift/height in the rear when driving and the ability to lower the deck to the ground for driving machines on/off.
    You are an inspiration to us "uneducated" :-)

    Very cool stuff. I'm very seriously contemplating doing this with a recently acquired frame and axle only of a camping trailer(16x8). Great quality build here for sure, well done. also you may or not know this but im going to tell you anyways in case you dont. with those cheap chinese air solenoids, if you take of the mufflers and route them back to the tank through a "Tee" and a check valve you wont have to worry about air loss from your tank, because it continues to recycle itself while not impeding the double acting ability. have a good one again good job

  • @gmctech

    Absolutely phenomenal project!!! May I make a small suggestion? No matter the size of trailer I fabricate or repair I wire all the trailer wires into a sealed junction box and add toggle switches to remotely activate the park lights and/or hazard flashers without needing to be hooked up via the haul vehicle. It's come in handy when parking the trailer on the hard shoulder or when the haul vehicle has had electrical or connection issues.

    For the airbags they do need a lot of air. Tractor-trailers run 100 plus lbs. The air system builds to 125 to 130 before cutting out. Wasn't surprised you needed to go that high. Nice series of videos. 👍

    • @dodgeme1986truck

      No a fully loaded semi normally runs around 50-70psi at 34000 lbs(70-80 psi at 40000) on the drives with an empty trailer they only run 30-50 psi and empty 15-30 psi they use a load height valve to maintain a set ride height with an air dump valve for kneeling the suspension to get under the trailer king pin plates.

    Nice work on the trailer. Fit up a little roller for the winch cable to run on over the 1st steel bar it has to pass over, make it easier to drag cars up. A couple little welded on brackets, a v belt pulley and shaft for the pulley to run on.
    Some 4wd roof racks have them on the front of the roof rack so you can use your winch to drag the small "tinny" boat up and onto the roof rack.

    From a mini truck guy.. Slam specialty re6 or re7 would be a much better bag. Lifts more with less pressure and will last a lot longer. Plus with that kind of wait id expect to see 120psi + to get the advertised lift

    Although I won’t be buying the plans for this from you it is a really good design. For the drawings to be of value it would have a lot more information that you simply did get. The fact that you had to test the trailers lifting capacity means you hadn’t done the math to know that answer already. Can’t blame you as I would have simply over built it to save the time anyway. So what did I get from this video series? Honestly you built a prototype that offers everyone the chance to see what they can do and a few things they shouldn’t do like when you lifted the trailer over and stood on the ladder. You shared so many good ideas that it makes a great jumping point for me to try my hand at an alternate design. Over all you impressed me with the completed results and I believe that you built something that will serve you well for a long time. Thank you so much for all the information and a few laughs. Oh by the way the kids were a great addition to the video. I loved their reactions and seeing how impressed they were with you. Great job dad! Keep it up.

    Agree with limiting the height for travel and would add one thing as well. I would change the air lines that you used to the type you would find on commercial trucks. They are commonly called Synflex (Eaton Name Brand). These have a nylon braid internally and are much more resilient to temperature, pressure and most chemicals and fuels. Any commercial truck supplier or dealer will have them by the foot. Since you will be on the road with this trailer you really don't want an air line failing.

    Love the idea you have. I've watched all the videos. Great job all around. The comment that I want to make is that I think you will need to add a ridge to the outside of your airbag plate. If you look at minute 15.07, with the load, you can see that plate is bowed. This might cause a stress crack/failure later.

  • @michaelshea1683
    @michaelshea1683 7 месяцев назад

    What if you put a 2-3" spacer between the swing arm and top of the bags. Then you wouldn't need 90-100 psi to lift it higher.
    Also you should find the center of gravity of the Busa and always put that above the trailer axle so you won't have trailer sway!!
    Nevermind, I saw you last trailer video & saw your adjustments. 😁

    I have a similar project where I am cutting an old boat trailer down to 16 feet and making it a flat-deck motorcycle trailer. Originally, I was going to pull the leaf packs and coil spring and 4 bar it. I have been mulling over air bags instead of the coils. I'll have to add a panhard bar or Z link to keep the axel located. I'm also going to add shocks like you. I think I can get the back of the deck on the ground like you did as the axel is a straight axel with a drop spindle.

    If you change your hitch to one with a drop to level out the trailer. I'd measure from the top of the frame nearest the truck and in the back in the same plane. Find the difference between the two and then divide by 2. That should be what you want for a drop on your hitch. Should level it out nicely. On the air spring binding, could you put pivot like you have on the top also on the bottom? You could also add a doubler on the winch line so it won't work so hard. Cheaper than a new winch and the added load to your system. That thing is freaking awesome!!

    You should check out the commercial trailer air bags and associated equipment. I think the airbags on my trailer are Meritor and are available in different diameters and travels. Your trailer shouldn't need more than 50 to 65 psi at full load for long life. At 90 psi, if you were to hit a pothole or road debris at speed the pressure could be high enough to cause a failure. ( From experience, the bang is impressive! )

    • @VinyB57
      @VinyB57  3 года назад

      i'm sure the bang is memorable! I'm getting confused now, some say don't over pressurise, others say the opposite and both sides claim having experiences with bags. I get that we don't all the same type and manufacturer of bags too.....well I guess I will have to have a go my self and see the limits of the air bags which is 100psi... It may create a memorable experience too! 😅

    • @lewisjohnson8006
      @lewisjohnson8006 3 года назад

      @@VinyB57 it's mere physics, a circumstance that can be calculated. For instance if you were traveling at 50 mph and hit a 2" tall object, what's the pressure rise from 60psi vs 90psi? Or at 10 mph you bumped up on a curb about 6", same pressures?

    i would recommend getting a better battery for the trailer system, I'm not sure how long that little battery will power those things for. Maybe get a marine deep cycle battery from Walmart for around 100$ or better yet get a lithium battery from amazon.

  • @fredio54
    @fredio54 3 года назад

    I like the solar+inverter+battery+mains compressor idea. Another idea that doesn't suit your frame design very well but that I will use if I ever build one of these things is to USE the frame as air tank. My frame design has large rectangular box down each side as the main rails with 2" cross beams between to support the deck. My intent was to use the side rails as large air tank AND the air lines to get close to the bags. Feed air in one side and pull it out the other. If well sealed they'd hold air indefinitely so you could prefill at home from a real compressor and just let the baby one maintain the tanks high. Then regulate what you want in the bags from there. Another thing you can do to make the bags more linear in their spring rate is to add a tank in parallel to them so that when the bag compresses it compresses the air in the small tank at the same time. Air bags are unique in that if you take that too far you could have enough pressure to support a large load but very little capacity for the load to change without the ride height changing drastically. On the flip side, without such a tank the pressure in the bags rises rapidly as they compress and you end up with a very bouncy feel that's unnatural to someone used to springs. Tuning that tank size is to tune your spring rate. Could be done ghetto style at first while tuning then build in the required volume once you have a feel for what you want.
    About your ride height issues, there's two problems, one is the ball height on your tow vehicle, and the other is a lack of travel in the wheel itself. I suspect you need to put more load on the bags with more rocker ratio, so to speak. But if they can't stomach more load then adding a second axle and two more bags AND changing the geometry is the way to go.

      @VinyB57  3 года назад +1

      I fredio, nerver really though about using the rails for air tanks, I mean I do sketchy stuff, but putting pressure in a structural component, that's another level of sketchyness for me. But it's a idea too and having multiple ideas for a problem is a key of success, so thanks for comment, also, stay tune this week for the video part 4, spoiler alert, I fixed the height problem...kinda easily!

    • @fredio54
      @fredio54 3 года назад

      @@VinyB57 Looking forward to it. I don't think it's sketchy at all, even hot rolled in 3mm wall wouldn't flex much with 100psi in it, certainly not enough to stress any butt weld joints onto the sides of it. Especially not if they're evenly frequently spaced and hold the role bracing the sides :-)

    Those are springs, or bags, should be fine. They are designed to run with far more than 90psi. I’ve been building air suspension for decades and can tell you that a cantilever like you have takes more air pressure under load. Air them up until it’s where you want the ride height and don’t worry about it unless it’s 200psi. I expect it will need at least 120.

    • @VinyB57
      @VinyB57  3 года назад

      Thanks Chad, like I said, I'm no expert in air bags, so I'll try at least 100psi and see how they react! (that's the limit the manufacturer puts) I ran with 90 psi, so 10 psi should have a impact in the height! Don't think I have the balls for 120 psi yet....once I buy bigger ones, I might have some fun with the old ones and maybe see their limits. Thanks for the advice Chad!

    Air suspension is the only way to go for a trailer. It provides a smooth ride as well as variable height. A couple of things you might consider is carrying a spare bag or building some metal spacers to take the place of the bag in case a bag or your air supply fails and covering the bags with something to keep the sunlight off of them.

    This is awesome, but you don't want to let airbags get compressed like that. Maybe, if you have the willpower, get some triple play airbags and redesign the arms so that you can go from 5 psi to 40 psi to get your range of motion. Again, i think this is awesome! If you're not going to redesign it, just keep an eye on the bags! Wouldn't want you to have a blowout and end up in a ditch. Perhaps... Bump stops? I don't know. I still think this is very cool.
    New sub btw

      @@VinyB57 the other thing is, the trailer is so smooth because you put shocks on it. Most trailers are just spring so this is pretty rad. You also chose to put the articulation in a direction where when the tire sees bumps, it is allowed to move up and back so it doesn't have to fight the bump and suspension geometry as much. It's a pretty neat design.

    I think the reason the winch slowed as the load came on the trailer is the winch drum diameter increased thus putting it in an increasing higher gear. This is what I've found winching logs.
