    Following the success of this year's action blockbuster Ip Man, biopic of the legendary Wing Chun grandmaster and mentor to Bruce Lee, a revival of the Chinese martial art has taken Hong Kong by storm.
    In this video we meet sifu Ip Chun, son and successor of none other than Ip Man. He currently teaches classes at the humble Ving Tsun Athletic Association's headquarters in Mong Kok which was established in 1967. Ip Chun prefers to see Wing Chun as a health regimen rather than just a form of combat.
    The spry 84-year-old tells us about all things Wing Chun and his thoughts on the future of the martial art in today's society.

Such as when he speaks about fighting 9 people, he's saying more along the lines of "Great yea you fight 9 guys, so what? it's not going to solve the violence problem in society. It's not about how u can defeat violence, it's to use wing chun as a form of keeping your health strong. "

    There is no doubt that Martial Arts and even Wing Chun promotes good health and people that contribute to society in a positive way. However, remaining healthy may require you to fight to protect your life. After all, if someone threatens your life they threaten your health. Just a thought.

    • @Fraggr92
      @Fraggr92 3 года назад +35

      Sure. But the goal should always be to avoid having to fall back on violence in the first place, which is where a lot of people fail. They don't learn martial arts seeking to be able to defend themselves in the eventuality that they get attacked. They learn martial arts anticipating that they'll put themselves in situations where they can use violence and hurt people, and then draw on martial arts to hurt people more effectively.

    I've followed the movies based on the art and always enjoyed it. During these troubling times I've considered becoming a student yet didnt know how. Not to sound dramatic but after watching IP Man 4 and thinking of life as a black man, I feel emotional and really believe this art is more than health base. It created a bridge for those who wanted to learn this and many of us, being die heart fans of Bruce Lee, need this to stay sane.

    Wise words at 2:56 - but that's because: "He who excels as a warrior does not appear formidable. One who excels in fighting is never aroused in anger. One who excels in defeating his enemy does not join issues. One who excels in employing others humbles himself before them. This is the virtue of non-contention and matching the sublimity of heaven". But make no mistake - wing chin is very very violent.

    After extensive research into martial arts and kung fu it is clear that both emphasize health and peace more than anything. Yes they can be used to cause harm to others but the core focus is that kung fu and martial arts would be nothing without you. It is the ones who to teach it in the pursuit of longevity and peace that will help carry it through time so that many others will continue to benefit from the knowledge passed down. My goal originally was to join the UFC but after looking into what it means to be a true martial artist, it is so much more than being a champion or making a name for ones self. It is taking the knowledge that you have learned through your years and passing it down through generations to ensure that it's influence can alter the lives of many in the most positive way possible. People such as Ip Man, Ip Chun and the legendary Bruce Lee understood these concepts vastly beyond those who would seek to market kung fu and martial arts for a profit, and that is why they will be remembered as long as these arts are taught.

      Both Ip Man and Bruce Lee mostly marketed their martial arts for financial profit. There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking to make money from hard work and skill. That is what it means to be a professional rather then an amateur. They were professionals, and you just do it as a hobby. That makes them much more impressive then you.

    • @william1306
      @william1306 8 лет назад

      Yes they did market it but it's the motive behind the action is just as important as the action itself. They sought to teach the world and yes, for a price. I'm not commenting this to seem like a badass or to be impressive. Simply sharing my thoughts on martial arts mate.

    • @masterd4964
      @masterd4964 7 лет назад +1

      I grew up a Jehovahs witness. mom still is. This religion like so many takes so much of the martial arts it does not understand and perverts it. like in ninjutsu, when you see them sitting and "casting spells" thats really a meditational exercise to train the brain through conditioned response (when I do this- this will happen in my body ; ie: when i hold my hands like this i will have focused breath and mental clarity) People didnt understand this so they thought they were casting spells, something religion latched onto hard. Or in traditional tkd or karatedo bowing to the flag. As a kid I never said the pledge of allegience and I understood why but I was always taught to respect the flag. a bow is a simple acknowledgement that shows respect. You certainly arent praying to the flag. Again taking something the wrong way that is not what is. Let's not forget how many examples in the bible there are that martial arts play an enormous part. Like after moses died and Joshua led his people into the promised land of milk and honey, slaughtering every man woman and child of the caanites. martial means military, and organized religion and land are the reasons for the biggest lost of life in the history of man. For you to make a post like this you are clearly a fan of martial arts anyway or you wouldn't be watching this video, thus either proving your hypocrisy or your ignorance. Thats why I left that organization. They talk a good one about "the truth", but in reality you practice what you preach as well as an acolyte-molesting priest.

      @seraphinaaizen6278 3 года назад

      His father never fought 9 people. Ip Man was a movie and pretty much everything in it was fictional.
      Wing Chun is functionally useless as a martial art. There are some elements of it that have practical application (some of the trapping techniques) that can be stripped out and applied to a more functional fighting system, but I'm unconvinced that anyone in history has used Wing Chun to win a fight against ONE opponent, let alone more than one.

      @@user-re9gj2zd5e I do know.
      Ip Man's life is actually pretty well documented, since he's a relatively recent historical figure and we know rather a lot about him. And we know that the movie doesn't really reflect most of his life. The historicity of the movies is a well explored topic, and it takes very little effort to investigate these things.
      Ip Man never fought ten people in some kind of underground fighting arena being run by the Japanese (and there's no evidence such an arena existed), he never had a duel with a Japanese general. Ip Man also didn't experience the kind of hardship depicted in the movie during the Sino-Japanese war.
      The movies were not intended to be a biography. They're action movies.
      As for Wing Chun's efficacy: Yes, I do know.
      Wing Chun has been tested as a fighting system many, many times. And every time it's tested, it fails. The hand trapping techniques of Wing Chun do have some viability, but almost everything else about the style is functionally useless.
      The linear movements, the way the hands are held out in front of you, the awkward, straight legged footwork; everything about Wing Chun that MAKES IT Wing Chun also makes it ineffective in a fight against anyone who isn't also using Wing Chun. Traditional martials arts in general have spent the last several centuries evolving in a direction that values tradition and rote more than functionality, which is why many of them fare so poorly in actual combat situations.
      The only time Wing Chun techniques have ever been used successfully in a fight is when some elements of Wing Chun are grafted onto more functional fighting styles, like kick boxing. On its own, Wing Chun has practically no combat viability.
      It's on roughly the same level as Aikido. The only more useless traditional style I can think of off the top of my head is taichi.

      @@seraphinaaizen6278 Bruh... I'd respect this more if it were in a video analysis instead of a comment. To simplify what you're saying, Wing Chun has the same problem that every other tma style has, which is more about the way it's practiced, and its practitioners lacking actual combat experience; emphasis focused too much on "It's about peace and spirituality guys, I swear!" and not enough on "Surprise! Speed! Power!"
      Tests? I'll take your word for it until you tell me those tests are actually UFC/MMA examples, which LOL! Moving on to "everything that makes it Wing Chun"... I agree that it's a rather stiff style, but that's not to say there's absolutely no movement beyond the straight-forward blocks and attacks. Specifically, the only stance you ever see in Wing Chun very often makes funny looks at cat stance and more standard fighting stances irl, which is when a Master will start talking about different angles of attack that are still straight-line movements, but worth noting.
      tl;dr; the name of the game in any fight is speed and experience/muscle memory. Funny bashing on traditional styles; Shaolin is the most traditional style there is, and every master of it hammers home speed, power, and flexibility. A style is only as useful as its practitioner.

    the stupidest comment yet that I've ever heard in my life. ....why don't Kung fu masters go into ufc to show the world that Kung fu is the best and not just for movies and show? simply put,you can't argue with the thousand years easily of Kung fu training, discipline and showmanship. Kung fu is about aligning oneself with peace, control,health with mind and body. it's not created for violence, it was established to defend themselves if attacked. but I guarantee you hands down Kung fu is the dominant force even if it was used in the ufc or mma type of environment.

    Back when I could afford the gym I was doing some recreational Muay Thai with my father. You know, stay in shape, vent some steam, seeking perfection (or at least, some of it. I'm lazy shut up). Sometimes there was sparring too.
    Nothing too violent nor serious. In 3 years there was one serious fight between two friends but it was supervised and under regulation (a bit like boxing rules). It was a memorable fight, tenseful, fast and powerful but nobody got hurt. It was amazing.
    Anyway, there was this 72 y old guy when I met him. He was doing this for a long, long time. I remember the first time we shook hand, it was made of steel. I weighted 210 pounds when I was in top shape, I miss the feeling. He weighted a barely 160, yet his attacks were twice as strong as mine. They didn't fend the wing, they ripped it. The sandbag made gunfire sounds.
    Useless to say, whenever we sparred I had to put my pride away. I am sure I could have hurt him if I really wanted to, a kick here or maybe a lucky jab. Of course I would be on the ground in the time I'd recover.
