What is a good martial art/artist? Is it someone who are good at fighting?, or is it someone who are good at a certain specific traditional martial art?, or is is someone who are good at several different modern or traditional martial arts? I often see alot of comments questioning the effiency of Wushu/Kung Fu, in regards to using it as a self defence, or fighting in a ring against an MMA fighter for example... The whole subject of calling out wushu or kung fu as a bad martial art. Because it supposedly doesn't work in the ring against for example an MMA fighter, is just as silly and ignorant as it is wrong. First of all martial arts is not only about fighing inside a ring. Martial arts holds many more aspects than just ring-fighting. Martial arts or selfdefense is first and foremost about not fighting, and while learning to defend yourself indeed is the whole principle and foundation of it. It is only meant to be used as a last resort. So just because some martial artist are bad at fighing inside a ring against an MMA fighter. Well that doesn't automatically make them bad martial artists, or the style, a bad martial art. It only makes them a bad fighter, and usually only in that regi (MMA regi for example). Yes, sure some styles are to some degree more suited for combat. But that depends on how the style is being used, and how the training is being done. Yes, sure we have yet to see a kung fu fighter making it to the top within MMA regi, and the likes (Well maybe except for Zhang Weili "Magnum" who started with Kung Fu). And sure we have also seen a fair amount of wushu or kung fu practitioners being "annihilated" inside the rings. And yes, even "masters" of wushu/kung fu, who where pretty bad against fighters such as MMA fighters. But that doesn't mean, that it doesn't work in the ring. This only shows, that those fighters have been bad representatives of their style, in regards/relation to, understanding how to apply their knowledge and adapt to the circumstances. I mean any kung fu practitioner who expect to be able to go inside the ring against an MMA fighter, and use/apply traditional techniques, such as "Tiger returns to mountain" or "Snake creeps down", are surely naive and has misunderstood one very basic principle of self defense, which is, to adapt to the situation and to use what ever works in your favor. Almost all of these kung fu fighters which i have personally seen in the ring, seems to have been more focused on trying to use/apply their techniques accordingly to their specific style. And also it would seem, more focused on looking good or technically correct, while they try to perform their techniques. Or else, it looks like that they havn't trained fighting scenarios properly outside their traditional way of fighting, meaning they simply lack the practical experience of adapting their style to using/applying it, outside their traditional ways. This is never the styles fault, but instead, always the practitioners fault. The best way to utilize a traditional martial art like Kung Fu, against an MMA fighter, is to find/use some of the most simple dodging, parrying and hitting techniques from the style, and learn to master them, adapting them to ringfighting and have a lot of practical training in that regi. And then sometimes when the moment is right, you would maybe be able to apply a certain traditional technique, against your opponent, even inside the ring and against a MMA fighter. When i trained karate about 30 years ago, i heard a story about a karate champion winning the karate world championships in the UK, and that he was miscredited by most of the present karate world back then. Because he had fought and won in an untraditional way, seen from most karate practitioners perspective. He won by using the same technique against all his opponents. With a simle side- or backstep, with a simple sideways parry followed by an attack (the attack was executed instantaneously while parrying) either to the torso or the head. Some argued that he shouldn't have been named the winner because he wasn't as "technical" as the others, and some felt that he was kinda "cheating", or not fighting within the rules. But the fact was that while he certainly didn't followed the norm, or fighing in the standard karate way, as almost all others did, with a greater technically variety. The fact was, that he did follow the rules, and what he did worked, it was effective, and he landed the most points because of it. So you could say that it was the fault of the other fighters, because they didn't manage to adapt to his fighting style. There are basically/typically three kinds of warriors/combatants seen in ring fighting: Good/great fighters who are bad (or mediocre) at a specific type of traditional martial art. - (Most ring fighters). Good/great martial artists who are bad (or mediocre) at fighting. - (Some ring fighters). Good/great fighters who are also good/great at martial arts. - (Some ring fighters). In this example, when i use the term martial arts, i refer to specific traditional styles such as karate, kung fu, aikido, tae kwon do etc. The most dangerous fighters there exist, are those who first and formost, are natural born fighters without any prior training, who then become ring fighters, while they at the same time learn martial arts. And you know what, that doesn't necessarily makes them a good martial artist either. Just a good fighter.
Thank for your well-thought out response. It's great to see people with such a good understanding of the wide spectrum of martial arts, and I really appreciate it. Your discussions around traditional martial arts, adaptation, and even the UK karate champion are really apt when talking about modern wushu's development. Many people seem to think wushu is ineffective, but completely misunderstand the purpose of it and the reality of fighting and competing in different rulesets. For these people who want ring-fighting there is wushu sanda, which is extremely effective because it's been adapted and developed for stand-up fighting rulesets. Sanda fighters such as Cung Le, Zhang Weili, and Muslim Salikhov have become world champions in MMA. But people don't think it's wushu anymore because it doesn't look strictly look like these forms. The reality is that sanda is an adaption of traditional wushu for the 1-1 ring fighting formats. Stand-up fighting with gloves favors striking in certain ways, which is why all stand-up arts in the ring, whether their base is wushu, karate, TKD, or muay thai, all end up having similar looking punches and kicks to the unfamiliar. Despite this, there are still very clear and traceable techniques from each base style. It is true that during sanda's development they studied other styles for effectiveness, but they did that to see what pieces of the thousand of different traditional wushu styles could be adapted for ring fighting.
@@bluehippofilms You're welcome, and thank you for your respons. About this part of your comment: "whether their base is wushu, karate, TKD, or muay thai, all end having similar looking punches and kicks to the unfamiliar" It's interesting to note, that once when i was taught a certain Wing Chun technique, it was almost exactly the same, as a technique i had learned from Tai Chi. And i think that few people would think or suspect, that there are any similarities between the two. But then again it is very simple, because of the shape and functionality of our body, and in relation to the mathematical principles applied to the technical applications of martial arts. You know, in regards to distance, angles, rotational force, lever principle, speed, timing, grounding, weight transfer, etc. When taking these things into account, the possibilities available to achieve the most effiency, gets narrowed into a certain amount of options/techniques, which is why we see so many similarities between different martial arts, and especially in regards to applicable techniques inside a fighting ring. Like with these sayings: - "It is better to know or train only one technique a thousand times, than to train a thousand techniques one time". - "If you practise only one or two styles for ten years, you will achieve mastery over them, and if you practise 10 different styles for ten years, you will only become mediocre at them". Hard work but for a useless discipline. when i was younger, this martial art evoked a perfection of movement, efficiency and beauty, because of the films of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and others...Now it just reminds me of an old folk practice which has never been able to renew itself and which is worthless against MMA. Just nice moves for action movies and shows.

@@albertoongoI bet all you watch were old men’s getting beat around by mma fighters not real lungful masters.
@@albertoongo noo it is useful the chinese mma guy is trying to find fake martial artist that claim to practice this but they dont
@@albertoongo You are right that generally these moves don’t work in the real world. But wushu and kungfu alike are not always used for combat. It is a spiritual and entertaining thing to most. I did wing chun for about 6 months. I wanted a break from MMA. I really enjoyed it and I have taken things from it to MMA.
That was dope and blew me out my seat. Kung fu has been apart of my life until this point but Ik enough to hold my own against a normal fighter. This performance is pure art with these showcases and the talent level is crazy
Fantastic show!

The great martial artist Donnie yen.
Grew up watching black n white asian kung fu movies in asia since the 70's but nice to know that it is brought to the world so one can see the skill, art form n discipline that goes into it. Best one is watching the monks of Wudang fight in their group formation... dying art

@@tamdang3996 ok my brother 👍🏾
Best kungfu stage performance ever seen.🔥🔥🔥👌👌👌👌
Donnie is the GOAT
They already have a future show....woww
Kungfu is art.
@@light_96-b4f vai no templo shaolin com qualquer arte marcial que vc saiba pra vc ver se serve ou não
@@light_96-b4f what they do on stage is meant for show, not actually for combat. It is meant to advertise & intrigue people to join. What is taught in the school for combat or self defense is slightly different. Also, you have to know how to apply techniques to real world situations. Not just do what is taught in school. Because times have changed so a practitioner must learn to modify old/ancient techniques to make sense in modern day fighting
It's Much More Than That, It's Also A Way Of Life!

Way of the life.
All move is Kungfu.

Oustanding effort from all involved in putting a masterpiece like this together on stage and off. 😃
Wow that's really cool! I've always been so fascinated with Chinese culture. I don't know any martial arts, but I've seen most all of Donnie's movies. Definitely one of my top 5 favorite martial artists!! 🥋
Chain punches were amazingly performed by Donnie, it looks easy but difficult to master.
