1991 I bought an ex-AA van (1.3, 4 speed manual, uprated rear leaf springs) idea being to follow the then trend of RS Turbo engined vans etc, Bought it off a Florist that was having a baby and didnt need it, think I paid £695 for it - was all good just faded yellow paint and skanky steel wheels. Ragged it around for a while before putting 1700T front light conversion on it and getting it in grey primer. Some bell*** crashed into front offside and I retained it off insurance and sold it to mate - ended up about a Gnats cock off the floor with RS Turbo running gear and Pearl whie paint - Happy days!

if i remember right the badges were given to members and if a member was broken down and an AA van was to pass, they'd be obliged to stop and give assistance, this goes back decades way before the 80s. great video and great van!!!
@@hongkongstuey way before the 80s is right lol since 1905 to be precise 😆 and up to 1967 the patrol men were supposed to “salute” any driver displaying a badge, that all changed after then and the late square badges like on that van ( 1967-present) were just holding up tradition as they no longer had numbers on, PS an AA patrol would stop for any driver in distress back then in the hope they’d “ become” a member 😆 the badges were mostly a marketing gimmick more than anything and just to feel included/part of the association 👍 I should also add that it’s always the person who is the member not the vehicle so the badges never relate to a car/person necessarily being a member ( if a member broke down in a friends car regardless of whether just as a passenger in it or driving it then that car would be assisted) 👍
@@gimble447 All true, I want to add that once there were even AA 'boxes' (and RAC) basically a refuge that you could shelter in about the size of a phone box, which is what it was. You were issued a key and a badge when you joined.
@ yup I have a few AA keys and about 14 miles from me is one of the 19 last remaining AA boxes in the UK, I’m not sure if the phone in it still works though 👍

The reason for the throttle problem is that the EDC16 ecu needs a dedicated live for the DBW, it been wired wrong when the swap was done.
Correct, currently it is depending on the TPS for signal.
WE USED TO USE THESE VANS WHEN WE GOT THE CALL TO BE A POWER RANGER. ZORDON THE POWER RANGER LEADER SAID IT WAS MIGHTY MORPTHING POWER RANGER TIME . I ACTIVATED THE ESCORT VAN AND TURNED INTO THE PINK RANGER.

AA badges in the first year (1905) were only on the AA mechanics motorcycles to identify them as AA patrol vehicles, in 1906 they started giving them to members, every AA badge issued had a number on it, but they weren’t membership numbers, however you could identify the year of issue from it, the only badges that don’t have numbers are 1967 onward badges which are the ones like on the young chaps van as they were just “tradition” by then, Up until 1967 AA patrol men were supposed to salute and driver displaying a badge,All purely done just as a promotional marketing tool and to make members feel special/part of the association 👍

pretty sure its the brake light switch that needs wiring up or bypassed,the ecu thinks your driving with the brake pressed that why you need press the throttle twice
My 1st ever vehicle was a white MKIII one of these, was cheaper insurance back then for a 17 year old. Had a set of cobra alloys, 4 cibie spot lights that added at least 10hp 😂 id recaro seats and a steering wheel off a Mk1 RS1600. Laughed at the rattling back doors i just used to turn the radio up 😂

I think the AA badges (and others like it)were used for visual communication for the service/recovery vans…less variety of cars so each model was common and there wasn’t mobiles to pin point location like today

compared to more modern vans i love the old styling of this van. i wish we had a time machine for some cars because the old cars seem to hold a car personality better then the modern boring cars. so far the only working van i kinda like that is modern is a ford because it mixes well with a rear van thing but al the athers nawh mis match. He did a lovely job on this old style AA working van keeping it like that retro but with new stuf nicely done. the fun in this car is in the details i heard nobody talk about the wheel nubs being a lego brick glued on to them. =) anyways proper job nice work on that car.

Car derived vans (same profile as a car) are currently the only vans with the same speed limits as cars, Vans have lower speed limits. 25 years ago when I trained as a transport manager light vans were vans if they only had 3 windows up front and car speed limits if they had 5 windows like a car, since then the law has changed - but if its v5 registered as commercial the speed limit is 10mph lower except in towns.
now imagine all those T3, T4, T5 van camper /crew conversions that are going at car speeds but plod could catch you out

@@countmurcielago9802 🇧🇱Buzby ( as in saying you’ll give someone a Buzz or a Bell) wasn’t really on MK3 escorts much if at all, but he was sometimes on the Vans before that though ie the Bedford (Viva) HA and Commer Vans but even then he wasn’t on very many of those vans really ( Buzby was first seen in 1976, was at his hight in 77-81 and then slowly used less and less till going altogether from any advertising by 1985)
